[00:00:30] Heyo, I'm your host, Soli. Once again, having a returning guest, but this time he's in the

[00:00:53] interview with Chair Legion Podcast, multi-caster, extraordinaire, Ricky Morgan. Yeah.

[00:01:01] Soli, what's up, man?

[00:01:03] Glad to have you back. And more importantly, just glad to tell your story. You may know

[00:01:09] him from numerous podcasts, including The Hell Meing Power Hour, Doctor Movie, You Know What's

[00:01:16] Awesome, Short Bus Cinema, and House of Wax.

[00:01:23] Everybody listens going, yeah, I don't know any of these shows.

[00:01:25] I don't know any of these shows. Who is that man? He's been a recurring and frequent guest on

[00:01:30] everything from two drink minimum commentaries to cinema beef, now known as The Butcher Shop,

[00:01:37] as well as Fancy and Friends. He's been on here plenty of times, but he's also guest-starred

[00:01:42] in forgotten film cast and just various other ones. Bravo, bravo.

[00:01:51] I'm kind of that kid. Going all the way back to my teenage years, I guess. I've never had a drink

[00:01:58] of alcohol in my life, so that's one thing. But the thing is, I was still invited to all the

[00:02:03] parties because I was the entertainment.

[00:02:05] Were you the chauffeur half the time where you're like, I'm driving everybody home?

[00:02:09] No, they wouldn't let me drive. I was too crazy to drive. But I was the freelance free entertainment.

[00:02:16] Getting invited on these shows is kind of that same thing. I think they think I might make them

[00:02:22] chuckle. I don't know. You want to have fun. Right. Yeah. If it ain't fun, stay home.

[00:02:29] There you go. What's the point? So you've been doing this almost a decade now.

[00:02:35] Let's backtrack a little bit. We're going to develop again. You've been a farm boy all your life.

[00:02:42] No, not really. I'm married into a farm, I guess you'd say.

[00:02:47] Oh, there you go.

[00:02:49] I married my high school sweetheart. We met when I was 13 and we've been together ever since.

[00:02:57] She's a farm girl. We are total opposites attract. I'm Mr. Rock and Roll, had the

[00:03:03] mullet, zebra skin jacket. I was that guy and she was a cutesy little girl. Kind of looks like

[00:03:10] Meg Ryan. There you go. Look at you. Yeah. But she grew up on the farm and her folks hated when I

[00:03:17] came out to their house. Her dad would literally just shoe me when he saw me pull it in the driveway.

[00:03:23] Because I'm not from the country but lo and behold, I grew up, I'm in Tennessee.

[00:03:29] I mean, you drive five miles out and you're in the country no matter where you're at,

[00:03:33] even in Nashville. You can't escape it.

[00:03:36] Yeah. So I tried to play dumb with it because I knew it comes along with living on a farm, which is

[00:03:41] hauling hay, messing with cattle. Well, the more that I played dumb, hey, I'm from the city.

[00:03:46] I don't know how to do any of that stuff. It worked out my advantage because,

[00:03:50] you know, hey, I might get hurt out there. I better stay in here in the air conditioning

[00:03:54] or it's nice and cool. There you go. I get out there and get hurt. But

[00:03:58] that kind of got ruined when they found out that I was like the top judge in FFA,

[00:04:04] you know, cattle judging and so. Yeah. So anyways. Have you always been based in Tennessee?

[00:04:12] Yep. Yeah. And really in this area, which is West Tennessee, not really close to anything

[00:04:21] important. I guess Jackson, Tennessee would be the closest bigger town, which is not big.

[00:04:28] About two hours from Memphis, about two hours from Nashville. So I'm in the little of nowhere.

[00:04:33] There you go. Matter of fact, my next door neighbors are Amish that tells you anything.

[00:04:37] People say, hey, Rick, where do you live? I say just follow the electricity where it stops.

[00:04:40] Follow the Amish. That's me.

[00:04:42] But yeah, getting back to just getting into podcasting. I drive an hour and 10 minutes

[00:04:52] to work every day. And you run out of, you know, you run out of music after a while.

[00:04:58] And I did what most people do that listen to podcast is you just start picking some shows

[00:05:03] and start listening. And I started listening to the Midnight Horror Show. I don't know if

[00:05:09] you know that show or not. I think I've seen it. Yeah. Well, that's where Duncan McLeish came from.

[00:05:16] Yeah, podcast under the stairs. Yeah. Yep. And Fancy Mark, all those guys, they were all on

[00:05:21] that show together and I just absolutely loved it. And one night I was listening and they

[00:05:27] were talking about something that I just messaged out there and Duncan responded back. And we just

[00:05:32] kind of hit it off. And all began from there. He's alive. Yeah. I was listening to

[00:05:39] them. Then I started listening to Killer POV. I'm going back a bit there now. That's

[00:05:47] Rebecca McIndry, Rob DeLuzzo. And I became really good, you know, pretty good friends of Rob

[00:05:57] and Elric Kane. And they had this show. We're the best podcast ever. And the problem is it

[00:06:02] got too big. And they started getting sponsorship and then they got picked up and then they

[00:06:06] became shockwaves. Then it became whatever it is now for Fangoria. So I mean, they've just, you know,

[00:06:13] they're about the biggest horror podcast that's out there. Wow. And really got into that,

[00:06:20] started listening to Duncan a lot and I started just asking him questions. Hey, what about this?

[00:06:25] Because, you know, I like to talk in case you can't tell. And he started just giving me some

[00:06:33] hints on what to do as far as making it work, being consistent. Which I've never been consistent. But

[00:06:42] just about everything Duncan told me I did right opposite. But he was a great mentor. And

[00:06:50] I called my buddy Danny Bennett. You know, I said, Hey, what do you think about? What do

[00:06:55] you think about you and me doing a podcast together? And it was going to be called Six

[00:07:00] Demon Bag when we started Big Trouble in Little China reference. And that didn't pan out because I

[00:07:08] think there's another show called that, even though they had like three episodes and they had discontinued.

[00:07:13] But I said, Ah, let's not take that chance. And we started kicking around the ideas. And that's where

[00:07:18] the hell ming power came from power hour. And that was basically just we tried to think of

[00:07:23] what's our favorite movies are go tos. And it was obviously Big Trouble in Little China first.

[00:07:28] And then Flash Gordon was kind of the kind of the next as far as he and I getting together and

[00:07:32] just enjoying watching movies, which you know, he and I worked together in Nashville. I lived in

[00:07:38] Nashville for quite a while. We just became best friends. And then we moved back home. But

[00:07:44] this was a good way for he and I to stay in contact with each other because, you know,

[00:07:47] when you're separated like that, you kind of lose track and life happens.

[00:07:51] You got to watch the movies with someone. All right. And so he and I just this was

[00:07:57] a good way for us to keep in contact with each other and keep talking and

[00:08:01] you know, I would describe how you developed your love of just crazy, goofy, wacky, cheesy cinema.

[00:08:09] Just when I grew up watching, I mean, I was I was not a risk taker. I wasn't the kid.

[00:08:14] Like I said, I didn't drink a drop in my life. I didn't drive fast cars. I wouldn't

[00:08:20] take her, you know, I played music, you know, which I still do still playing a band.

[00:08:25] And what's your band, by the way? Midlife Crisis. That's a great name.

[00:08:32] Uploading any tracks under any of them? Oh, no, it's just cover tunes. You know, we're just doing

[00:08:38] one minute we'll do Journey and then we'll do Iron Maiden. So it's just it's just stuff, you know.

[00:08:44] And but out of out of all that, I just reached out to Danny and I tried to describe what I

[00:08:52] wanted to do. And he said, so let me let me see if this is correct. He said, you want to do UHF

[00:08:59] but on a podcast. I'm like, yeah, that's it. That's it. I want to make a show that's like UHF where

[00:09:05] you got scoofy, you know, goofy skits and, and, you know, just crazy zany stuff. Make it entertaining.

[00:09:11] Nobody cares how much knowledge in the fourth wall, especially when you have it

[00:09:15] to where it sounds like someone else is arguing or talking with you. I mean,

[00:09:18] you were doing some zany fun stuff there. I was like, hey, could just do if you can do all that

[00:09:22] editing and make it coherent. That's fun. Well, again, with the music background, I used to do a lot

[00:09:28] of recording for bands. So what most people absolutely hate about podcasting, which all of

[00:09:33] you out there, if you're interested in podcasting, editing is the nightmare. It's the hardest part.

[00:09:38] You got to sit back. You want me to, you know, because I got a background in it with,

[00:09:43] you know, recording bands, which is way harder to your broadcasting college go to something.

[00:09:48] You'll need it down the road, especially if you're setting up your home stereo or just even

[00:09:53] most minor thing, helping out as an assistant at a house of blues or something.

[00:09:57] Right. Yeah. So that just kind of happened naturally as far as that. And yeah, I mean,

[00:10:06] it just became really what it came down to is us trying to crack each other up. Who could make

[00:10:11] a synopsis? Not crank you off, but crank you up. Okay, cool. A fake synopsis for the movie.

[00:10:18] And, you know, it was, it was just fun. It's fun and it still is. You know, we don't do as many

[00:10:23] shows as we used to, but we're, we just talked last week. We've got a new episode coming out

[00:10:30] real, real soon. We just hit episode 100 after all these years. So we had some,

[00:10:39] you know, some up and down times as far as all that, but finally hit 100. We're about to

[00:10:44] do 101 and we're trying to get back to that original formula that we had and doing the skits

[00:10:50] and stuff. So the next episode comes out, which will be Superman two, three and four.

[00:10:58] And yeah, but we've got skits to go on. Someone's got to do it. Trying to get back

[00:11:05] to the old original formula because that was just fun. It just took a lot out of us and

[00:11:10] we kept making it bigger and bigger. And then it just got to where it was too much. And I think

[00:11:14] that's kind of what we crashed and burned a bit. Ambitions, not a bad thing, but I see what you

[00:11:18] mean. Find your limit. Yeah. And life happens, right? I mean, Danny has two teenage kids in

[00:11:24] high school and one just graduated. Oh yeah. You know, those things kind of trump anything

[00:11:30] else. So you're, you're just kind of, you know, at the mercy of whatever he can do and,

[00:11:35] you know, but that was the thing we never intended to really become anything out of this.

[00:11:42] We just did it for the fun of talking about these movies that we feel like not enough people talk

[00:11:48] about. And that was the weird thing about getting it Legion because we recorded the first episode,

[00:11:52] which was crawl and dragons layer together. There you go. We recorded it. We send it.

[00:11:57] I sent it to Duncan. I was like, what do you think about this? He's like,

[00:12:02] five minutes later, he said, you're going to be getting a phone call from a guy.

[00:12:07] Bo Ransdale. There you go. I'm Legion. So they instantly,

[00:12:11] he said, how do I get your show on our network? I'm like, well, you've got a copy of it.

[00:12:16] You know, and we didn't know anything about this. So we really got lucky

[00:12:21] just getting it, you know, to the right people and Bo and Duncan both just absolutely loved it.

[00:12:28] And that's kind of how it happened. But it kind of threw a wrench in what Legion was doing,

[00:12:32] because they were all doing strictly horror stuff. Then off. Here it comes. Here comes these goofballs

[00:12:37] doing, you know, dragon slayer or, you know, three o'clock high or, you know, so video

[00:12:44] for moon type stuff and then we kind of stay away from those. That's that's more of my thing.

[00:12:52] That's why I do the solo shows because there's a ton of stuff that's never going to make it on

[00:12:55] Hell, Mean because Danny just doesn't care for him. He doesn't like the Roger Corman stuff.

[00:13:01] I remember that. Yeah, he didn't care for me. Right. So deep hurting.

[00:13:07] We got, you know, our shows are going to be more of the stuff that was let's just put it this way.

[00:13:11] The stuff that was on HBO between like 82 to 88. That was on every day. You know,

[00:13:19] something that's an ambitious crazy movie instead of low budget galore. Who was your

[00:13:24] favorite kind of horror host growing up? I mean, there was the virus, Vanguilles, Joe Bob and

[00:13:30] you know, Rod Sterling's growing up. We didn't really have anybody in my area. So I didn't

[00:13:37] see these people till way later on. We had the creature feature that come on, but there

[00:13:41] was nobody hosting it. It would have a little claymation thing that kind of came up and said

[00:13:44] creature feature. And that was it as far as a host. I mean, I didn't know who Elvira was

[00:13:50] till about 88. How many Mr. Science Theater movies have you been

[00:13:56] prepared to kind of tackle on Rift? Well, I've got the whole set of MST 3K right here in front of me.

[00:14:04] There you go. I mean, I was there from the very first episode when it first came out on Comedy

[00:14:09] Central here. And you know, I'm still a Joel fan. I mean, same. I was so blessed to talk to

[00:14:17] Frank and Trace and just hear these guys just, just so just Zany since the humor that just I

[00:14:26] get you like just seeing Frank saying my source of humor comes from watching every revenge movie

[00:14:32] and laughing my ass off it. I'm like, that's perfect. Yeah. Yeah. And and I just it's one

[00:14:38] of those things, right? You're just instantly drawn to it because it's like, Hey, this is

[00:14:41] something that's part of who I am, right? Yeah. So these guys get me there. They made it bigger and

[00:14:48] I'm happy for them. But now it's a different kind of humor that's now kind of second nature. But

[00:14:53] back then it was kind of word of mouth like, Hey, you want to watch something crazy with me?

[00:14:58] It's all brand new. You know, the fact that, you know, you saw him saw him sitting down

[00:15:03] there and just riffing on the thing. Just I don't know, it was just perfection for the time.

[00:15:09] I would videotape every episode and watch it two or three times a week, you know,

[00:15:13] yeah, it's really into those early days for sure. So when, when did you,

[00:15:23] you were, so you're on Legion, you're doing some crossovers with all the other shows.

[00:15:29] You guys about a year ago, you and court of cinema psyops were doing an audio commentary

[00:15:36] show where you'd watch a particular B picture and you'd be syncing it up like you could watch

[00:15:41] it with the movie. Where did that idea come from? And is that still happening? Yeah, we,

[00:15:46] matter of fact, we just, we just talked last week about what our next one needs to be. We just

[00:15:50] finished Xana do this last and what's the name of that show again? Sorry. I saw it's a mental

[00:15:59] rental mental rental. Yeah. And I heard the rolling thunder episode. That was great. Oh, yeah.

[00:16:05] The reason it started, it says, you know, Legion started their Patreon and, you know,

[00:16:09] we thought this is a nice opportunity to do something for Patreon and it be, you know,

[00:16:15] guests from other shows that don't normally work together. Of course, if you remember the

[00:16:18] Hellmings stuff, there was a big riff between us and cinema psyops, which is, you know,

[00:16:23] it was like the Andy Kaufman Jerry Lawler back and forth. Yeah. It was fake, you know,

[00:16:27] but it had everybody going, what the heck's going on between these guys?

[00:16:30] I couldn't, I'd stop the fire. I'm like, Oh, but yeah, it took a second episode where I'm like,

[00:16:35] oh, okay, I see, I see. I didn't get it at first, but I get it right. Yeah. And then, you know,

[00:16:41] because that was just to, you know, drive business, get people interested and check the

[00:16:46] shows out and it will be both benefited from Danny hated it. He thought it was damaging,

[00:16:51] you know, because people would take it the wrong way. I'm like, no, man, I said,

[00:16:54] it's Andy Kaufman. I mean, that's what we're doing here. And but it all worked out and that led to,

[00:17:01] you know, lifetime friendships. I talked to court pretty often and I mean, what a cool guy man.

[00:17:07] And, you know, it was just a good opportunity to do something together and it does go back to

[00:17:13] that mystery science theater kind of thing where we're just kind of talking over the

[00:17:16] movie and making fun of it and it's all in good fun. Yeah. And that's kind of how that

[00:17:22] started. You go back to short bus, which I met Johnny Krug at Texas Frightmare and

[00:17:31] Johnny was one of the first shows that we listened to when we were starting to make

[00:17:34] Hellminge and it was really a we would both listen to different shows, you know,

[00:17:40] we'd listen to Duncan, we'd listen to podcast on on the hill and then we found,

[00:17:46] you know, Johnny's show Kruger Nation and it was like, wow, it's just meat and potatoes.

[00:17:51] He didn't fluff it. We didn't like shows where they go, you know, you tune in because they're

[00:17:56] going to talk about a certain subject, but they spend the first hour talking about, well, I had

[00:18:00] a flat tire and I mean, you know, we're like Krug. Oh man. Yeah. That was devastating. And

[00:18:08] you know, that was a fun show. We had a blast and the new thing that Gary and I are doing,

[00:18:15] Gary Hill, which is called Look What You've Done or Look What You Did

[00:18:19] is kind of a tip of the hat to short bus, you know, but I'm serious. There's nothing that can

[00:18:26] capture that lightning in the bottle again. It was just fantastic and yeah, man, what episodes

[00:18:31] there is, that's all there is. And I thought about handing it off at one time, but I don't

[00:18:38] know. The right thing to do is just leave it as it is. And yeah, I sure miss him, man. He

[00:18:43] was a lot of fun. And yeah, it's a shame, you know? Yeah. But we met each other at Texas Fright

[00:18:52] Mayor, Matter of fact, and Danny and we just hit it off. And the idea there was, you know,

[00:18:59] well, it goes back to kind of a mystery science theater thing again, right? Let's try to find

[00:19:03] the worst movie ever made. And we got pretty dang close a few times.

[00:19:11] Yeah, you're good there.

[00:19:18] What do you think, mainly just gets you up in the morning, other than just want to have fun

[00:19:21] and just do some chores and then sit back and relax?

[00:19:25] I'm really kind of a workaholic. You know, I like I said, I drive an hour and 10 minutes

[00:19:33] to work one way. So it's two and a half hours in the car. So my job, I'm a CI engineer. So I'm

[00:19:41] always trying to find better ways to improve things and make things better. And so I'm doing

[00:19:47] that. And then I play in the band. I do a lot of, you know, some video graphics for some

[00:19:52] people that need some help not video graphics, but put some video stuff together. I do some audio

[00:19:57] mixing for people. I'm always dabbling with something. So it's hard for me to just sit and not do

[00:20:03] anything. Even if I'm watching a movie, I'm usually doodling. You want to be cooking while the

[00:20:08] movie's on yet? Well, be honest with you, I'm talking to you right now and I'm sitting behind

[00:20:12] a set of drums at the same time. I'm not playing, but I'm behind my drums. I mean,

[00:20:17] so there's there's this thing even then you're still writing some music or thinking about how

[00:20:22] you'll play some tomorrow. Yeah, yeah. And that's just the way I'm wired. Both of my parents are

[00:20:28] the same way. They they'll take a nap, you know, in like a Sunday afternoon, but the rest of time

[00:20:34] is just go, go, go. And I've always told people it's like I'm not happy unless there's too much

[00:20:41] on my plate. So I get a platter, you know? Yes. Did you know there's also another podcast

[00:20:48] host who shares your name? Uh-uh. The Ricky Morgan show. I kid you not. Oh, really?

[00:20:54] I mean, pop up here once while an Apple podcast and pod chaser. I'm like, who is that?

[00:20:58] Well, cool. And the same guy. Maybe I'll meet him sometime. Believe it or not, in my hometown

[00:21:08] where I grew up was another Ricky Morgan. So I would get his mail. We both worked at the

[00:21:15] same place. There was an emergency phone call that happened one time and they called us both

[00:21:19] in said, somebody called for Rick and we're like, Oh, which one? You know? And luckily we had a

[00:21:26] different middle name and that's how he just deciphered who it was. And the other bad thing

[00:21:31] is this guy had some issues, I guess you say in his younger days. And my mom would call and

[00:21:37] say, Hey, I just saw where Ricky Morgan got a DUI. I just want to make sure it wasn't you.

[00:21:41] It was like, no, it wasn't me, mom. So promise.

[00:21:47] That sucks. But that goes back to, I mean, I used to be a fan of just local radios and here in

[00:21:53] Dallas, Texas, they had the Bowen gym show. And yeah, I loved how they had a stick where they

[00:21:59] would do some prank calls and they did a game that they've been doing since like 2002. And

[00:22:06] I think they stopped because they, you know, people aren't as cool with prank calls anymore.

[00:22:10] But their whole stick was, can I talk to dumb ass and there'd always be someone who would just

[00:22:16] be a smart ass back going, which one? Right? Yeah. I mean, you get, of course, it grew into,

[00:22:23] you know, jerky boys and yeah, realm of darkness. Yeah, the Schwarzenegger quotes. Yeah.

[00:22:32] What would you say is your favorite filmmaker and actor if you had to choose a few

[00:22:36] favorite director? I'm a huge diploma fan. Yep. Phantom the Paradise is my jam.

[00:22:46] Scarface has a wonderful Blu-ray if you haven't seen it where there's a kill in language counter.

[00:22:52] Oh, wow. That's cool. F-bomb counter. Sorry. That makes sense.

[00:22:58] Um, yeah, actor. Actor? I love George C. Scott. Oh, yeah, he's probably my favorite.

[00:23:09] You son of a bitch. I mean, he says that in every movie, you know, but he

[00:23:13] the contract. He have to it's the George C. Scott. I love Glenn Ford.

[00:23:18] Oh, I love Richard Harris. Yes. Well, Gays. Yeah. So, you know,

[00:23:27] you should remake a man called horse just one day. Just do a remake.

[00:23:32] And just like do a funny satire of today's society.

[00:23:38] Yeah. I mean, that's, uh, I mean, obviously I'm a horror fan, right? I love the Sam Raimi,

[00:23:44] you know, come on. I just grew up with Sam Raimi, uh, you know, the Stuart Gordon stuff. I mean, it's

[00:23:51] just carpenter. I mean, so I mean, Argento. Argento is my favorite horror director. So,

[00:23:59] but yeah, I mean, I'm kind of all over the place, but when I look at the work

[00:24:05] of like George C. Scott, I'm like, wow, I mean, this, this is acting, you know?

[00:24:09] Right. This man got here legit. Right, right.

[00:24:15] What music arts do you find yourself doing a cover of the most at times?

[00:24:20] That I do a cover of journey. I get asked to journey a lot because I can,

[00:24:25] you know, if you, if you saw my pictures of me in high school, I look like Steve Perry.

[00:24:29] It's the reason I got my girlfriend or my wife that I have. She had the hots for Steve Perry

[00:24:35] and I look, I did a face swap on Steve Perry and you can't tell the difference.

[00:24:41] And I can kind of sing like him. I mean, for people, say, oh, you sound just like,

[00:24:46] you know, nobody sounds just like Steve Perry. I'm sorry. You just don't.

[00:24:49] Oh, hey, that's, if someone thinks you're the 2.0, you might as well take it.

[00:24:56] I can see you having a cover band and you rename it Perry 2.0.

[00:25:00] I tell you an interesting story. This happened nine years ago before podcasting and all that.

[00:25:07] I got a phone call from a friend of mine. I used to play in a band in Nashville and he said,

[00:25:11] look, he said, you're about to get a call. You notice a lot of my conversations start with,

[00:25:14] hey, you're about to get a call. He is. Oh my God.

[00:25:18] Don't stay by your phone. Stay by your line line. Stay by your phone because you're going

[00:25:22] to get a call. And it was Tom Schultz's guitar tech, which Tom Schultz the guitar player from

[00:25:28] Boston. Oh, well, what? Yeah, I got a call from Boston to come be their lead singer because they just

[00:25:36] fired whoever it was they had. They're having trouble with him. Oh, shit. And I said no.

[00:25:45] Here's the deal. I mean, again, I just started my new job and I know it sounds lame,

[00:25:51] but I worked hard to get to this position. And then the thing about Boston,

[00:25:58] they don't tour that often. They tour once every four or five years at the most.

[00:26:04] And when Russa Jules become less. Yeah. Well, the thing is, you can't just sit around and

[00:26:10] wait for the next five years for the next gig to come along. So I would have to throw

[00:26:14] everything away. I would have to leave my house. If everything went through, I'd have to

[00:26:19] leave my house and go to the LA forum. It would be been the first gig

[00:26:25] and play with Boston, but they had like three shows left of the tour. So I'd done three shows

[00:26:31] and that kind of be it until they decide to do something else again. And it just,

[00:26:37] I'm going to say something that's kind of sacrilegious. I'm just not the biggest

[00:26:43] Boston fan. You like what you like? I do. Have you ever been asked to do covers of Zeppelin,

[00:26:50] Van Halen, Tom Petty? Oh yeah. Do them all the time. We do them every night. Yeah. If we do Van

[00:26:54] Halen, Tom Petty, like I said, Maiden, we do some Priests. We do Kiss. We do everything

[00:27:01] 70s and 80s. That's that's what we do. We'll return after these messages.

[00:27:40] with Brent Pope, I sit down with guests from the entertainment world and we do it all over

[00:27:43] breakfast or should I say Brentfist? Every week on Brentfist you get inside Hollywood

[00:27:48] Info and Tips great breakfast wrecks and booty debates. Most of all, you get the most

[00:27:52] delightful 30 minutes of your week. So dig in. It's Brentfist time. Listen at Brentfist.com,

[00:27:57] Apple Podcasts or wherever fine podcasts are found.

[00:28:01] Do you ever find yourself thinking about who would win in a fight between Goku and Superman?

[00:28:05] Hi, I'm James Gavzian on the Who Would Win Show. Me and my co-host Ray ignore

[00:28:09] anything important happening in the outside world and debate fictional battles between

[00:28:13] characters from comics, movies and video games. We got a new show every week and almost

[00:28:18] always am I the winner? Not true Ray. In the past we've discussed such matches as

[00:28:23] Captain America versus Darth Vader, Solid Snake versus the Iron Giant, classic matchups like Robocop

[00:28:29] versus Terminator and even the Muppets versus Sesame Street. That one was crazy. So if you're a

[00:28:35] fan of geek culture and love a spirited debate, check out the Who Would Win Show wherever you

[00:28:40] get your podcasts or check us out at whowidwindshow.com. We do Quiet Riot, Rat, Motley Crew,

[00:28:50] Oh, sweet. So, Motorhead? Don't do any Motorhead.

[00:28:55] No we're not. No. Yes. What about yes? No, we don't do really progressive stuff because

[00:29:02] two guys in the band are old head bangers, so which we do very well. So we're all, you know,

[00:29:09] Van Halen. I mean, a guitar player can, I mean, he does the eruption every night so we can,

[00:29:15] you know, he nails it. So we got the abilities to do that kind of stuff but we're not really a

[00:29:20] progressive band. We're just a meat and potatoes kind of rock band, you know, like I said, journey,

[00:29:25] sticks, stuff like that. So and we're booked. I mean all of next year, every weekend from

[00:29:35] now till the end of next year. So for those who might want to come by and listen, where do

[00:29:40] you perform at? Oh, it's all in Kentucky. So I mean, it's just we play somewhere different

[00:29:51] every weekend. So what do you recommend for anyone doing any indie music and who has to get ready

[00:29:57] for the whole, you know, getting ready to pack up equipment and doing a long haul and drive

[00:30:05] and he, words of advice, he'd recommend for those getting into it who have to be in the zone.

[00:30:10] Yep. If you, it matters what you play because I play drums so get a nice set of drums that don't

[00:30:16] weigh a lot. Hopefully your band has a trailer that they can hold all your hardware so you don't

[00:30:23] have to haul that around but carry a, it's called a what a rock and roll carry or something.

[00:30:30] It's basically like a dolly made to hold music equipment. That thing's a lifesaver.

[00:30:36] You just, I can pretty much put my whole drum set on it and do one trip out of the car to the venue

[00:30:42] and not have to make multiple trips. So yeah, just again, I'm a CI guy. I'm all about

[00:30:48] being lazy and finding the easiest way to do something. And yeah, I mean, do I make it

[00:30:54] hard on yourself? Spend the money, get you good equipment that, that, you know,

[00:30:59] will make it worthwhile. I mean, I don't regret buying that dolly one bit.

[00:31:06] Makes sense. Yeah.

[00:31:10] All together, what would you say is just also key for those getting into podcasting because

[00:31:16] there's a lot of people who don't have any sense of time or know what they want but not

[00:31:19] how to express it or get picky with their guests? And the great words of Duncan McLeish,

[00:31:26] do what you love to do and your audience will find you because, you know, stay true to it,

[00:31:32] be consistent. And when we say consistent, it means your show is a consistent product. Also make

[00:31:39] it consistent as far as releasing, which I don't do except for Dr. Movie because I'm doing an episode

[00:31:44] every weekday. Yeah. So and you know, if you're not consistent, they don't know to be looking

[00:31:53] for it. So when you know, when they know that every other Friday, you're going to drop

[00:31:57] an episode, people are already looking forward to that date and make sure that your audio and

[00:32:03] stuff is good. Right? Yeah. Spend the money, get some decent equipment. You don't have to spend a lot.

[00:32:09] You can get one of these, you know, like a Yeti mic or what, 100 bucks or something and they sound

[00:32:14] great. They're going to walk around, make sure you're not stomping around where we can't

[00:32:18] hear what you're saying. Right. And that's usually people say, man, your mic sounds really

[00:32:23] good. And I'm not processing it at all. But what I am doing is again, behind the drum set,

[00:32:29] I'm in a closet with clothes and stuff hanging up. So it's a real dry room, right? Yeah. And that really,

[00:32:36] you know, focuses on the mic. So there's nothing worse than listening to a show and you hear the

[00:32:41] like air conditioner kick on and it's louder than the person talking. And

[00:32:46] if you make sure your levels are the same, it takes a while to get used to

[00:32:50] lacking your voice because I hate my voice. Always have. But get used to hearing it and making sure

[00:32:57] that other people that are on the show make sure that the levels are even. It's gotten a lot easier

[00:33:02] with Zoom and Skype like they are now because it kind of fixes it for you to a certain degree.

[00:33:09] But yeah, just don't throw out a half ass product. I mean, put some work on it. Your name is

[00:33:16] on it. So make it the best it can be. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Now that's kind of different with

[00:33:23] Dr. Movie because I do that on my drive back and forth to work. So I'm recording while driving.

[00:33:29] So, you know, but it kind of works for that because that's the setting, right? That's what

[00:33:34] it's going to be. That's where you get time to yourself. You don't have to worry about

[00:33:38] getting extra time. Yeah. And being that they're only about 15 minutes long. I mean,

[00:33:43] it's just an easy way for me to talk about the ungodly amount of movies I want to talk about.

[00:33:51] So right now I'm doing, I've got all the Jaws sequels recorded and I'm doing

[00:33:57] as many of the Jaws ripoff movies that I can. Yeah. So it's a ton. It's been your favorite

[00:34:05] kind of trashy movies to check out, especially ripoffs. Oh, I love the Italian knockoff movies,

[00:34:12] man, because nobody rips off a movie like the Italians do, man. No. I mean, not only do they

[00:34:19] rip it off and you know exactly what they're ripping off, but they put their own little twist on it.

[00:34:24] That makes it so entertaining. You know, I think that's like trying to one up Joe Dante on Piranha.

[00:34:31] Yeah, right. Well, I mean, think about contamination, right? Oh, yeah. So obviously

[00:34:37] contamination happened because Alien was a big hit. Yeah. But I feel like the people behind

[00:34:44] contamination never even watched Alien. I think they just saw the poster. They had the egg on it

[00:34:50] and they're like, oh, it's about alien eggs. There's this adventure movie that's literally,

[00:34:55] I could not often been described as a mixture of Indiana Jones and Alien.

[00:35:02] Why is it a mash them together? Treasure of the Four Crowns, man. I love Treasure of the Four

[00:35:07] Crowns. Yeah, I mean, so I just again, these were on HBO when I was a kid. When I really hit that

[00:35:16] horror age, right? Where you know, the first time I saw Gates of Hell and all these movies,

[00:35:22] it just opened up this whole new world of these movies. I never will forget the first

[00:35:27] time I saw Reanimator. And as soon as it was over, I kicked the tape out,

[00:35:31] random neighbor's house was like, you got to see this. And again, going back to

[00:35:38] not being a drinker or a risk taker, my risk was, OK, try to scare me, right? That's the thrill.

[00:35:46] That was the thrill ride for me. And that's where I found all these movies, which back then,

[00:35:53] half of these weren't even around here. I mean, nobody knew what stage fright was or the beyond.

[00:35:58] If it wasn't carried by a big VHS label, you didn't see it at any of the mom and pop stores.

[00:36:04] Yeah, I mean, that was it. And that's all we had. We didn't have blockbuster or anything like that

[00:36:08] when I was growing up. It was all mom and pop. Did you try doing bootleg cable?

[00:36:14] No, we didn't even have cable. So, you know, even in that point, we got cable,

[00:36:21] I don't know, maybe so, maybe about 82, 83. But we didn't have the outlets for everything like that

[00:36:30] at the time. I started getting into duping, you know, videotapes probably 86 or so, found out,

[00:36:37] you know, how to do that stuff. And but yeah, I mean, it was all just going to the video store,

[00:36:43] picking up, I don't know, children shouldn't play with dead things and going, wow, this is

[00:36:49] crazy, you know. What movie do you think you could talk about like 24 seven? You're so madly in

[00:36:55] love with it. Phantom of the Paradise. Okay, there you go. Phantom of the Paradise and the first

[00:37:00] Superman movie. Coming soon in the Phantom, Phantom Minute podcast. Oh yeah, it's just

[00:37:07] anytime I get a chance to talk about that and I'm going to talk about it. That movie was so

[00:37:11] far ahead of its time. It is everything that is me rolled up into one movie. It's got the

[00:37:16] horror element, the comedy element. It's got the music element. It's got the stuff that's just

[00:37:22] ahead of its time. I mean, this thing was talking about reality TV in 1973.

[00:37:27] You know, so it's just way ahead of its time. The fact that that Winslow Leech, who's the

[00:37:34] Phantom of the Movie, when he goes to block the record press where they stole his music

[00:37:39] and he goes to block the record press where they have re-recorded his music.

[00:37:43] When he slips and falls and the record press squeezes his head, he now has imprinted on his face

[00:37:48] somebody else singing his song. It's got all these deep meanings that nobody thinks about.

[00:37:53] I think because we're too busy reacting to it. Right, yeah. I tell you, it's a brilliant film.

[00:38:00] It had its troubles because they got sued by Led Zeppelin. They got sued by, was it Mahogany

[00:38:06] Rush? Another band sued him because when beef gets electrocuted on stage, they thought they

[00:38:12] were making fun of when this really happened. You've got pre-kiss makeup or right at the beginning

[00:38:19] of when kiss put makeup on, when they're doing the stage show, it's very kiss like makeup.

[00:38:24] The voice box that the Phantom has on, George Lucas took that idea and gave it to Darth Vader.

[00:38:31] So I mean, it's got all these pieces of it that people don't realize it was way ahead of its time.

[00:38:37] Right.

[00:38:38] Sorry, I told you I can go on about it.

[00:38:41] No, that's fine because there's so many movies that we don't even realize is like half of them.

[00:38:46] We take them away. You don't have 20 other movies that are right by it.

[00:38:52] And it's early diploma. So you start to see him use the split screen and just really

[00:38:57] starting to get his bearings on it. It's just I don't know. It's just something about it that

[00:39:01] just it's just it's my movie. The first Superman movie to me is special because it was the

[00:39:07] first time I went to the theater as a kid and realized somebody made this movie.

[00:39:12] You know, I started putting together that this is something somebody made,

[00:39:15] you know, and it just changed the way I looked at movies. It's I always go back and forth of

[00:39:21] which one's my favorite movie of all time, but and I love the first Superman movie so much.

[00:39:27] It's just perfection.

[00:39:29] Nice.

[00:39:29] And I just what do you think just keeps you going other than being a workaholic that

[00:39:41] you just always want to try out a new podcast show and you're fearless at this rate. It's okay

[00:39:45] if it only lasts like 10 episodes or once every two months.

[00:39:51] That was kind of the problem was, you know, like I said with with Hell,

[00:39:54] I mean it's its own thing. And I just felt like there's so much more I wanted to cover.

[00:39:59] And again, we're limited based off of what Danny could do, you know, life wise.

[00:40:06] And again, I just there's so much ground I want to cover.

[00:40:10] So many movies on to talk about that will never even, you know, touch that show.

[00:40:13] So that's where Short Bus kind of came from. And then the House of Wax idea was here's

[00:40:18] my horror show, but it was really no waxes and like I'm going to whack you with a machete.

[00:40:24] Whatever. Not waxes and melting on you. But they were not necessarily podcasts. They were more video,

[00:40:31] you know, video cast kind of things I was doing on YouTube.

[00:40:35] And it was a cool experiment. It's a ton of work, man. I mean, yeah, because you know me,

[00:40:40] I can't I can't just talk about the movie. I've got to make goofy songs about things that

[00:40:45] happened in it. And I mean, adding a visual adds. Yeah. Yeah. And it just became way too much

[00:40:51] work. And out of that, I had another show that I was doing I was driving for a little bit under my

[00:40:58] wheels, which is fun, but it was more music based. So it's always that down the road with a big

[00:41:06] host set. Well, it's hard. It's hard to do music. And you know, you can't play the music and not

[00:41:13] get dinged, you know. So that was the thing is I wanted to be able to play. I was more to

[00:41:19] be a DJ, right? Play the songs and give you little bits of information about it, you know,

[00:41:24] before or after. And there's not an outlet for that in the podcast world without, you know,

[00:41:29] getting permission from everybody and all that hoopla. Yeah. That's why it was short lived.

[00:41:35] Did House of Wax. And then there was a rad movie Rama. Nice. Which is me and almost

[00:41:45] personalities. Yeah, I they would appear in some of the same fees and I was like, whoa,

[00:41:51] Ricky's already went with himself. Yeah. Yeah. So I would do these different voices and

[00:41:57] the skin so our with your host Ricky Morgan pretty much. Yeah. Yeah. So it's that entertainment

[00:42:02] factor again. Again, I'm comfortable on stage. You know, my job is teaching people getting

[00:42:07] up in front of people and teaching them about something. So I just I'm naturally born

[00:42:12] to be in front of people and that aspect of it. I thought I've never done something where

[00:42:19] it's all these voices, but they're all just me and I'm arguing about things. And then that

[00:42:24] created a movie fight nights in the middle of that, where I take a piece of the movie where

[00:42:29] there was a fight and it would be like a wrestling match, right? It would be called out.

[00:42:33] Oh, we got him, you know, that kind of stuff. And in fact, the new Hell Mean

[00:42:37] episode is going to have one of those for Superman for where they're fighting on the moon.

[00:42:43] There you go. So fight, but again, I end up making them way too much work and I get burned out or

[00:42:50] I get behind. And again, this goes back to telling everybody be consistent. Do what you have the

[00:42:55] ability to do if you're only going to make an episode a month, make an episode a month,

[00:43:00] but make it consistent because that's kind of the pitfalls I've been having

[00:43:06] until Dr. Movie and Dr. Movie is where all this came together and it just works,

[00:43:10] right? Because I can watch the movie, spit out a 15 minute thing while driving,

[00:43:17] and I do all the editing and everything on my phone, which there's no editing. I don't cut

[00:43:21] anything out. It is what it is. I've got an opening track, an ending track that goes around it.

[00:43:26] I send it to Legion and boom, there it is. Nice. And I'm really happy with it.

[00:43:34] It's just easy and fun. And I'm enjoying it. Very cool. And all together, I mean,

[00:43:45] since everyone's got their own kind of side deal, how many shows do you recommend everyone just

[00:43:56] go by in general? How many should everyone be willing to do?

[00:44:05] Are you talking about just if they're going to do multiple shows and put a limit on it?

[00:44:11] Well, it matters what the formula is because like, you know, what's awesome was me and

[00:44:17] Billy Stewart. Billy Stewart's from Scary Dad podcast. We met in Texas as well.

[00:44:22] Great show. And because it was open topic, you know, it wouldn't a specific movie. It was

[00:44:26] like, Hey, you know what's awesome? Ninjas. And we'd go through everything ninja,

[00:44:30] not only movies, but the impact that it had on us as kids. We'd go by throwing stars, you know,

[00:44:36] and Billy did the majority of the work on that. So it took a load off of me. I could still do a

[00:44:42] show and all I had to do was talk and he would do everything else. Whereas hell hell mean I'm

[00:44:47] driving the bus there and then solo show. I'm dry. So it's that thing of, you know,

[00:44:52] you can do two or three things as long as you're not carrying all the load.

[00:44:56] And you're trying to be a perfectionist because, you know, that just makes it harder on you.

[00:45:01] And that causes burnout boys and girls. I've been there and even left hell mean for a while.

[00:45:08] Mark Allison fill in for me because I was just I was working three jobs and trying to hold up

[00:45:13] three podcasts at the same time and it was rough. So, you know, I'd say get one going

[00:45:22] and get it really good and get it comfortable to where it's almost on autopilot. And then you

[00:45:27] can explore with something different, but don't make it too much the same of what you're already

[00:45:32] doing. It needs to be something a little bit different just because what's the point of

[00:45:36] doing another show if you're not going to do something different than what you're already doing.

[00:45:40] Right. So your niche.

[00:45:46] Yeah, it's your news so on it.

[00:45:49] Right.

[00:45:52] Well, this has been cool. Anything else you'd like to promote in the future that's coming soon?

[00:45:59] Just crossed episode 200 with Dr. Movie which the show has only been around for a year and I've

[00:46:05] already done 200 episodes. But again, they're 15 minutes so you know that's a nice little I

[00:46:13] think the feedback I get is people like it because it's quick, it's easy.

[00:46:18] Dan Bone from Podcast on Hone and Hills like I like it because it's a it's a small daily dose of

[00:46:23] Rick, you know, you know, so it doesn't go too long. You know there's that and like I said,

[00:46:30] Hellming is climbing back out and matter of fact all of these if you look them up,

[00:46:34] they're going to be lumped together. They're all under the Hellming moniker.

[00:46:38] So if you're looking for Dr. Movie like on a pod catcher or whatever pod player,

[00:46:43] it's the look up Hellming power hour and you'll find all the Dr. Movie stuff there too. So it's

[00:46:48] all combined now on YouTube I've got them separated so if you're into checking out like

[00:46:54] I said the old house of wax stuff you can go to YouTube go to Dr. Movie and you'll see a

[00:46:59] playlist of all the doctor or all the house of wax stuff and the majority of the episodes of

[00:47:05] the new stuff's on there too and Rad Movie. All my solo stuff is kind of there together.

[00:47:11] But yeah, Legion podcast man. What an awesome thing it's been to just be welcomed into this

[00:47:18] family and all the characters and the great podcasters that I've become friends with

[00:47:24] you included. I mean if it wasn't for being able to get on Legion and reach out and meet

[00:47:29] everybody it's so much fun. It's so neat to make these companionships with people that

[00:47:37] I'll probably never see them in my life in real life but you feel like you're close friends and

[00:47:42] you would do anything for them you could. Legion is a nice community and we like work

[00:47:52] with each other and you know it's just a real cool thing to be involved in so enjoy it.

[00:48:00] Enjoy it well last guys yeah. Yeah. So thank you ever so much for this this was just eye opening

[00:48:06] because I see so many people who kind of just don't really want to talk about

[00:48:12] stuff like this and it's cool to kind of pick each other's brains and just

[00:48:16] remind everyone hey it's a thing. It would be different if I knew what I was talking about

[00:48:21] I literally just am flying by the seat of my pants and I hate to say it but I kind of

[00:48:26] live my life that way. It's the jack of all trades right jack of all trades and master of uno.

[00:48:33] There you go. But you can fake it just enough you know you can fool some of the people some

[00:48:37] of the time and that's kind of the box that I set in. There you go. You're like the bad

[00:48:44] magician there's an 80s callback and you're like I might be fooled in you.

[00:48:53] But yeah man this has been great I appreciate you even being interested in anything that

[00:48:58] works in this brain of mine. You are a powerhouse man so I appreciate that. That's

[00:49:04] I'm just a dude just like anybody else.

[00:50:04] you
