There are plenty of pretty voices with nothing to say. Do you have something to say? And you sing. Interesting. What are you doing next year? Working with my family. I want to do this.
[00:00:29] There are plenty of pretty voices with nothing to say. Do you have something to say? We require to have a hearing individual on board at all times. Family before.
[00:02:06] We got the one, the only movie geek and blogger, Jaylan Salah. How are you? I'm great, Cam. How are you? I'm doing fabulous because we're doing something we have not done in a while. It is like two versions, one theme. That is the name of it. And that is the 2014 movie CODA and its award-winning 2021 remake. Exactly. Lucky us.
[00:02:30] I had no idea about the original movie. I had to go back to that. It was a French Belgian film, La Famille Bélier. But yeah, but I was just like, it was so wild how it almost it's a comedy drama. I mean, they're both kind of comedies, but the original movie, it's much like either version of the birdcage and what have you. It was just like such different, different, different movies.
[00:02:54] And at first, when you're getting into the original, you're just like, this is so different. Like, this reminds me, even though it's French, it almost reminds me of like one of those British or Aussie mockumentaries kind of just like that handheld camera, everyone looking towards the camera and kind of acknowledging each other, even though they're talking to each other. They feel like they're talking to the audience and kind of more scattershot.
[00:03:24] But it's just so wild how it's like, yeah, that's so different, different vibe from Cyan Hedera's version of CODA, which. Yes. And I'm here to defend. I think that deserves best picture. I have no quarrels. I usually hate best picture movies. I think CODA deserved best picture that here.
[00:03:48] Yeah. So before I explain my so-called hot take, I I'm noticing a lot of people are doing that just because Apple paid a shit ton of money for it. I'm like, I don't give a shit about that. Why would I care what Apple paid? All of these studios bid crazy, violently large sums of money. Right. For the campaigns and all that crap. Exactly. Mm hmm. Well, it's a good comeback from Marlee Matlin.
[00:04:15] And she's I still want to see that documentary she did with her co-stars validated. I didn't watch it, too. It's more newer. I don't think it's streaming yet. It's wild how Troy Kotser is becoming better known. He was just one of those other actors who he was one of those. I looked up his resume is like I had seen him more than realized. I just I couldn't name it off the top because he's just one of those actors just been around forever. But I thought it was interesting how is like the 2014 movie.
[00:04:45] It mainly just again, other than the concept, not much in common. But here, the American version is all about a fishing family. Fisherman family and kind of blue collar in a way. And it definitely a big mainstream role for what's his name? So good. So wonderful comedian. And the teacher, remember the.
[00:05:16] Wait, let's search his name. Yeah, Mr. Mr. V. Eugenio Derbez. Yeah. Eugenio Debez. I didn't even know his name. Wow, that's new. I don't think I know the names, by the way, of anyone except I think Troy, one of the deaf actors. This is the only one. I think his name is Troy, but I don't know the name of any of those actors, to be honest. I don't know anyone in that film or maybe I forgot that I know, but they're not like on my radar often.
[00:05:45] So it was a surprise for me going to that movie blind. I was that way with the lead and boy, how are these these Brits are awesome. They distinguish themselves. You would swear. Yeah, you're someone from Utah or Arizona is like, nope, I'm a I'm a Welsh gal. I'm a and so this is probably her best known role. I'm looking it up and she's now on the HBO show Task, which with Mark Ruffalo and Mark Ruffalo.
[00:06:14] But yeah, she was apparently on Utopia, the original version before Amazon remade it. She was on Doctor Who. I'd seen her in Brimstone and Ghostland and Pirates. Brimstone. Wait, which one was she? Because I love that movie. It's very like very traumatizing, but I really like it for some reason. Well, my God, what was wrong? She played someone named Joanna.
[00:06:39] Joanna, I hope she was not like the one working with Dakota Fanning whom they had to cut her tongue. I wonder if I think that's her. No, I think, you know, I think playing the younger version of Dakota Fanning, if I'm correct. The younger. Oh, my God. I hope I'm right. Because that movie went back and forth again. No, no, no. Because Dakota's character's name is Liz. See? Yeah. So she must have been the other prostitute. Probably. Yes. Brimstone.
[00:07:08] I had seen her more than I realized I'd seen her. Yeah, that is a very uncomfortable movie. But I've seen her in the coming of age. Oh, my God. It is a very uncomfortable movie. You are right. Yes. I've seen her in the Italian movie Youth, which is an awesome coming of age film with Michael Kane, but that got sadly ignored in 2015. But yeah, it's just looking at her history is like all kinds of other stuff. Lock and key for Netflix. One day and high rise.
[00:07:37] It's like, yeah, she she has been in all that stuff. It just wasn't like the first five billed people. So I just I just didn't know. By the way, I just checked. She was the young Dakota Fanning character. But remember, Dakota Fanning character took the personality, impersonated this prostitute's character and cut her tongue for that reason to go and marry the guy. So, yeah, she was playing the young one. The actual name of the Dakota Fanning character was Joanne.
[00:08:04] I remember because this movie kind of let me for days like thinking about it, like why? What is happening? Why is this movie so dark and evil? I'm the worst. And women are all getting tortured. Exactly. So, yeah, I have it in my mind in print. Unlike Koda, by the way, there are many scenes in Koda which I forget, especially her love interest. I didn't like him. What was his name? That actor? I don't know. He was. That was interesting where I was just like, dude, stop. Right. Not going to make time for you.
[00:08:34] Yeah, he like. Oh, yeah. He looks like, you know, I called him discount Timothy Charlemagne. He just had that kind of just anxious, you know, without the appeal of Charlemagne. But you would probably know exactly without the quiz. He was in a. What country was that? A Dublin musical called Sing Street. He's been on Vikings, but I couldn't tell you who he played. Yeah, I know Sing Street.
[00:09:04] Yeah. Probably an unforgettable character because there's been a lot of people on Vikings and then I discovered like, oh, I don't. Right. You're only good on that show. You're not good. I did. There were all kinds of people who I dug. I dug the one lead fisherman, Brady, played by Kevin Chapman. You've seen him on Brotherhood, Mystic River, Rescue Me and First Adventures. He's always got that snappy Boston voice. But he was just like, we're going to get in trouble if we go against the Union.
[00:09:34] He's like, no, we're going to fight the Union because we're going to paid nothing as fishermen. And it's just so awesome how they're like. But, you know, the lead star, you know, Amelia's Ruby characters like dad, you know, you can't speak. I got to translate for you is like. And he just motions to go for it. Let's do this, you know. But it is an interesting like I just like again, I can't relate to fishermen.
[00:10:04] I have no fishermen in my family, but that matters not like it's still the same overall arc of parents are on intrusively asking you to be part of their family business. And, you know, the main character is like, I have zero interest. I'm not good at it. I don't want to do that. And then getting annoyed by how then they they don't want to outcast her, but they kind of just want to just let her just kind of they're like, we got it. It's like, no, no, you don't got it.
[00:10:34] And dad, your license is expired. You're going to get pulled over by the Coast Guard. You know, you got it. There's so many. So I definitely had flashbacks to my screenwriting class. It's like, OK, we're taking off five different boxes. Most screenwriters make the mistake of adding a bunch of intrusive or on an interesting or distracting subplots that go nowhere. This didn't have that. This just had like and now we got this and now we got that.
[00:11:02] And just they're hurtling conflict at you. And so you're just like, I can't take my eyes off the screen. Something's happening. And I had to even convince some other people like, I don't like musicals. I'm like, it's not a musical, but it is a great music. It's a music music. It's a music making genre. So if you like the art of I mean, hence the name code up the end of a piece. So a music piece. So I just dug the lecturer, the professor.
[00:11:31] I was like, we've all I've been coincidentally had a. Student supervisor, Mr. V, but that's not the relation. I just found that awesome. It's like he's the choir director and he's like, you have the talent. I am making time for you. Please be on time. And we've all been in that situation where it's like, I am trying to be here, but I might be 10 minutes late. I'm sorry. I can't. I am. Exactly. I'll be 10 minutes less late. But I am coming from here. It is just me and my own.
[00:11:59] I'm still, you know, a teen and I'm trying to get my shit together. I had a music teacher believe in me once when I was a kid and she thought I had a great voice, you know, and she made me join the choir and stuff. But I didn't continue pursuing, you know, like singing or whatever at all. I thought I didn't have it. She didn't look at you professionally. She didn't look at you with spite, at least I hope. Because we've all had that person. No, she was very kind. Her name was Maggie. They almost look at you like you betrayed him. It's like, I have a talent. And that's how my dad was with me.
[00:12:29] He's like, you could be a runner. I'm like, I'm not going to run track. I'm not going to run track. I think it's stupid. I don't have the mindset for it. I can do it. But that's not the point. That's not the point. I can do it. Yes. But yeah. And the director, you know, I just I want to see everything else this English director has done. Just Siân Heder. So she's apparently done it. She worked on Minimus Cernage for TNT.
[00:12:58] That's a really underrated show that no one saw. That was really good. But I didn't. I probably should see it if you say it's a great underrated show. It was just one of those like the ads were very risque. It was just back when TNT was just kind of just come over and just like, whoa, OK, where they're not just doing stupid, you know, action dramas. They're actually doing some unusual just they had all these other serious and dramatic people just.
[00:13:23] And it helped that it wasn't a toxic masculine show, despite the name is like it was just showing that everyone's having midlife crisis and no one knows when to just kind of call it the elephant in the room. But I need to actually rewatch it. But so looking at her resume, various episodes of Orange is the New Black, Little America for Apple and Tallulah, which I think I've seen. Yeah. And even played herself on an episode of Barry.
[00:13:52] So that was a good one. This is brilliant. I love this. Fourth season. Yeah. But yeah, no, I she's on my horizon. So whatever. She's got a biographical drama about Ruth Madelay. Actually, no. Yeah. Ruth Madeley starring as Judith Human, the disability rights activist. So she's got a theme where she's just kind of root for the underdog, the underrepresented kind of.
[00:14:24] Wow. Yeah, no, I just it's a lot to process. So you root for the underdog in film or even in actors? Like, do you love the actor who seems to be failing, always getting crappy roles? Is that it? Because there was a stage in my life when I was doing this. Or I would abandon an actor if they became like world famous. Like if I knew them from TV or whatever, I'd be like, yeah, passionate. And then they get famous. I feel like, oh, no, you're not. I'm out of my league. Yeah. Exactly.
[00:14:54] I've done that with every other filmmaker. There's about 500 names who were indie. And then the minute they got bigger, you're like, well, the originality is gone. I get bored of them. You know what I mean? Like they will, of course, be catering to the studio, catering to success. So they will not be owning to their own artistry. It rarely happens, except with someone like Juliette Binoche or Kristen Stewart. But mostly people just get too famous. They lose sense of what made them unique. So, yeah, this is why. I'm looking at you, Jeff Nichols.
[00:15:24] It's like the minute he went from 2 million to, you know, 20 million. Now he's doing all these bland, you know, what should be way better. Remember his earlier films? Oh, my God. They were so good. I was trying to be special and mud. Oh, my God. Now he's trying to be like. Now he's making boring crap. Yeah. He's trying to be like Spike Lee or Spielberg. He's like, well, here's the thing. You're not Spielberg and you're not Spike Lee. So don't. Why would you want to be anyone, man? Be yourself. You know what I mean? I feel like this has been happening to me with Jacob Elordi.
[00:15:54] I didn't like him when he was like in his euphoria days. And then I saw him in Frankenstein. I was blown away. And then now I see the Wuthering Heights success. And I'm starting to feel the withdrawal symptoms. Like, God, no. He's going to be like. And they're starting to like. I feel like this collective energy of hyping someone. It frustrates me. Like when everyone just starts. Just stop. Just stop. Yeah.
[00:16:23] Speaking of which, Amelia Jones was in the Running Man remake. Let's just take that off your resume. Shall we? Goodbye. Goodbye. And hey, you have like a dislike for Paul Meskel, right? Because my sister is like, hey, I got to have an avenge. I got a venge pull with Cam. You know, like go down the streets. Guilty. Because I'm not like. I'm not a big fan of him, honestly. My sister adores him. My dad hates him with a vengeance. He saw Gladiator. And he was like, this sucks. He saw Hamnet.
[00:16:53] And he was like, this sucks. So, yeah. I want to ask you like, okay. Why do you dislike him? Do you think he's not that talented? Or he doesn't have the face for the big screen? Both. Like. Collaborate. A brick wall has way more emotion. I'm sorry. I just don't. I don't think he has it. You know what I mean? Like he doesn't. I don't think he knows what it is. Anyway. So, I just. I just need emotion. I didn't charisma. And if I just see someone going.
[00:17:23] Just being a silent giant. Or trying to be a boy next door. I just. Is a turn off for me. I was just like. And everyone does. It's a turn off. Exactly. Like. Oh, yeah. I need someone who just. Exists in the role. So, like. Marlee Matlin in this. You know. She's been a noted deaf actress. She's been wonderful in everything. And it's like. She's getting attention for this role. And. No one complains about. Hey. You miscast the deaf actors. Because it's like. Yeah. No. They're. All the deaf people in it. Are actual deaf people.
[00:17:53] Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. The director apparently got some advice. From other award winners. And. But that matters not. She had two. Deaf. Language consultants. And. It's on the film. So. Like. She was heavily involved. In just like. Whatever she had to change. So. She's just so brave. For taking on that. Project. Honestly. Yeah. That. There's even a French American. Editor of this. Who's done a lot of stuff. Like. Pursuit of Happiness. Great debaters. And.
[00:18:22] A bunch of other Netflix shows. And FX shows. Like. Shogun. And the OA. So. I think that's kind of. A little just similar. Like. The scenes know when to. Kind of cut away. Even just all the awkward scenarios. Like. It's. It's self-aware. That what we're showing you is. Awkward. And. It's like. That's life. But. It's also not trying to get under your skin. Or just. Be unorganized. Is. And. I couldn't convince so many other people. Like. I couldn't convince my sister to watch this.
[00:18:51] Because it wasn't a superhero movie. I'm like. No. No. We need to watch something important. And. What's wild. Is I saw this with my mother. And she doesn't remember this. So. I think that's the other thing too. We see so much nowadays. Unfortunately. It's too much. Oh my god. I feel like I'm. I'm. This is why I'm slowing down man. I'm telling you. I can't watch all these movies. Like. Seriously. It's killing. My love for movies. Now I feel like watching a movie. Is more of a habit. Give me 10 years. This is why I feel like I have. Less and less. Of. A podcast presence.
[00:19:20] Or even reviews. Because. I feel like. Okay. I'm losing the passion for that damn thing. I need to do something about it. I need to take a step back. Or whatever. Because. We watch a lot of movies. And we start forgetting. Why we liked something in the first place. Or. We feel like. Wait. How can I be. Like. For me. Okay. It was like. You have to watch. Hamnet. Sentimental value. You have to watch Frankness. And you have to be passionate about. All of that. What if I. I'm not passionate about. A damn one. What if I'm only passionate about. One movie.
[00:19:51] So. I just. Decided. No. I'm not going to continue watching. All the Oscar race crap. Who cares. Maybe I'll watch it next year. Or the year after. So yeah. I stopped. Oh. We're going to kick you off the panel. You didn't watch it. I'm out. I'm getting out. Hey. Get out. That's a good movie. All right. So yeah. It's okay. That's the other thing too though. Like you can like it. But not love it. And that. And that is so annoying.
[00:20:21] To have to tell other people. That is like. I liked it. I'm not going to watch it again. Oh my God. I forgot. And that's fine. Did you love it? Oh wait. No. You loved it. I liked it. I didn't love it. Admit it. Admit it. Cam. You loved it. I'm still talking about it. So I think it's a poor movie. But I don't love it. I'm not going to watch it this week. You're going to watch it before going to bed. Like cuddled. You know like in your bed watching Coda. Yeah sure. I love it so much. Maybe if I get a crowd. I don't know. But. That's the other thing too.
[00:20:50] It's just like. And then. These same people are the same ones. Who think your movie from 20 decades ago sucks. So it's like. Hey you know. I don't. I don't talk back to you. When you don't think my movie's not so hot. So it's like. Chill. It's okay. Yeah. We don't have to all like it. It's okay. You don't have to love Coda. We can just all like Coda. Or dislike Coda. But at least tell us why you dislike it. And give us your reasons guys. I just think you got to be heartless.
[00:21:20] If you just don't like this in any capacity. Now if you thought it was. Yeah because it's endearing. And very kind movie. Yes. I don't know. But. What do I know? I like John Hughes movies. And he's an easy target nowadays. That people like to make fun of. And I don't get it. But I feel like. Okay. But I feel like this has gone too much. Too far. I mean. Like. I feel like now. Everything is supposed to be attacked. And made fun of. But that doesn't seem like a healthy way to consume art. No. Not everything.
[00:21:48] The last five bloggers who have encountered. Whether they're TikTokers or what have you. They've done the whole. Oh. You know. I'm not looking forward to it. I'm like. This is telling you. You must. I better. It's like. So I think that is it too. It's like. They want to only review the recent stuff. And. Yeah. And this. Honestly. This makes me so angry. Because. Okay. How are we going to analyze. And assess our older art. You know what I mean? Like. We can't just talk.
[00:22:18] And love all the recent things. It's. Besides. Everyone is talking about the recent things. Aren't they? Everyone is writing about them. And making a podcast about them. So at least someone has to be unique. You know? And then we get the whole. Oh. You know. I only watch stuff I like. Well. Hold on. So. You're not going to watch. You guys are liars. Anything new. You're going to watch just the same movie. You've seen a million times. Then no wonder you have no time for anything. You keep watching the same stupid movie. Oh my god. I'm not. I am off. Christmas movie. And holiday movie ideas. Can you believe it?
[00:22:47] Like when people. Up until. 2024. If someone asked me. What is your Christmas movie? What movie do you watch in the holidays? I'd be like. Last year. I have one. Sorry. I grew past that stage in my life. I watch whatever is there. If I have a movie to review. I will watch it. If there's something on TV. I will watch it. If you know. There's a new horror movie. I'll just watch. I don't care. I don't have that attachment. With you know. Holidays and stuff. To a particular movie.
[00:23:17] Not anymore. And no one is forcing you to do so. Yeah. No one is forcing me. But even then. It's like. It doesn't have to be a thing. I haven't really done holiday movies. Because I'm either working it. Or I just. I'm just not putting that much time. You need an episode on that Cam. You need an episode on like. Holiday movies. Pros versus cons. For or against. You know what I mean? We should do that. Because we've been meaning to revisit it. And.
[00:23:45] We need to do an essentials. Like. We will always have it be. An unofficial holiday movie. But it also needs to also be the whole. Is it overrated? Why does everyone make no other things? So yes. Exactly. It's diehard and holiday movie. And then we get the like. Weird ones. Like the ones that are like. Have Christmas. Fleetingly. Or Thanksgiving. Or whatever. Well. Do you find it wild. How though. This has like a big. International. Just like a bunch of French.
[00:24:16] Producers. And. This movie by the way. Is odd. It gives me the vibe. Of a lifetime movie. It has a lot of international. People involved. It won. The Oscar. When you feel like. It's not really Oscar-y. And it's not that theatrical. As you know. I don't think many people saw it. So in 2021. Let's. We were getting over COVID. So. But let's just look at the. Best picture. I feel like the world was depressed. They weren't. Into movies anymore. Yeah. So looking at the other ones. We had Meg.
[00:24:46] But that was straight to Netflix. We had Juice and the Black Messiah. I think those are both good movies. But no one saw them. Yeah. I love the Black Messiah one. Yeah. This one was really good. We got The Father. I don't think a lot of people watched it. Unfortunately. Because that doomed. Time and humanity. People weren't into. Too much. Minori was good. Nomadland. I thought was awful. The Father. I haven't seen. Shut up. You hated Nomadland. I could kill you immediately. Such a nothing burger.
[00:25:13] It's a great movie about being alone and free and just not caring. Oh my God. I wish I lived her life. And the soundtrack. I cried so. I cried when she. Okay. When there is the scene. When she sees this guy she likes. And he invites her over to his house. And she sees how peaceful he is with his family. And she knows that she's a bitch. You know. Like she's going to ruin his life. The piano peacefully. And she leaves in the morning. She can't be adapted to that domesticity. And then.
[00:25:42] Next scene we see her. She's at the ocean. Watching the ocean. It's as if she's reminding herself. Like. Oh my God. I love this amazing guy. That I really like. I could have stayed with him. And lived a good life with him. But no. I can't. Because she knows she'll ruin his life. So she goes and watches the ocean. As if she's reminding her. This. I have this. You know. So it will be compensated. I know a lot of people. By the way. Hate. One of my ex-boyfriends. It just was self-indulgent. He called it. Exactly. He called it like. Poverty porn.
[00:26:12] He wrote like an Arabic review on it. And said poverty porn. And I'm just like. Wait. No. Why? I'm glad you got something from it. I didn't get anything out of it. I was just like. I guess. Oh my God. Okay. So. Sound of metal. I'm ready to disagree. No. It's fine. Sound of metal. I haven't seen. I know it's depressing for many people. You have to. It's. Oh my God. It's. But wait. Why you have to. I don't think you have to watch it. I don't have to watch that one. It's so crushing. Why would you do this to me? I like Riz Amad. I just don't know if I need to see it. When I wrote. I love Riz.
[00:26:42] I think Riz is amazing. I'm very talented. And he's always doing all these experimental. You know. Projects. But. This one. It just makes you hate life. You know what I mean? Like. You know. This appointment. You know. These amazing movies that capture. So see it if I hate myself. All right. So. Exactly. If you've known a person in life. And I've known these people. Who have done everything they can. To not reach a stage of eternal disappointment. And yet they. And it's like. A cautionary tale in families. This movie is about something similar. Like. Hey.
[00:27:12] Don't seek. You know. The road that Uncle Ronald did. You will end up like him. So. This movie is like. Yeah. Eternal damnation baby. Finishing up those best picture nominees. That year. Just seeing what it's in competition with. So. Was the fodder. Any. Any good. I haven't seen it yet. It's a sad movie. Why was this year filled with sad movies? Now that I remember it. I remember crying. And I remember my dad loving it. Because it was Anthony Hopkins. So. I remember it's a sad movie. I don't know if it stands the test of time. Or it could be a product of its time.
[00:27:42] I want to see the other movie. The guy's done. The son with. Hugh Jackman. I watched The Son. And it was okay. It wasn't as good as The Father. But I really like the director. I wish he made more movies. Wait. He's got something. For this year coming up. But it's funny how. I only know about The Father. Because that was the time. Where they gave the award to Anthony Hopkins. And they wake him up in bed. And he's just like. I don't deserve it. I'm not coming. I love him. Oh my god. It's called Bunker. Okay.
[00:28:10] And it has Penelope Cruz. Javier Bardem. Oh yeah. You know this movie. It could be tied to the recent leaks. The Bunker. It has a very creepy storyline. So I don't know if I'm comfortable enough to watch it. If it's going to be a cliche. Or if it's going to be really on point. It sounds like a rape torture movie. Right. Yeah. They do have. Why am I pressing these weird emotions? I'm not pressing anything now. They had The Child of Chicago 7.
[00:28:40] Which was excellent. But that wasn't really in many theaters. Due to the pandemic. Now they had Promising Young Woman. That was a pretty good dark comedy. For anyone who likes those kinds of movies. Yeah. And this was Emerald Fennell's one. Right. Promising Young Woman. I think that's the director. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Because she is the one now who is directing Weathering Heights. Which is causing like a rift in the film criticism world. Some people say it's very horny and sexy. You know. Some people are saying no. It's a disgrace.
[00:29:11] And I was going to. My sister's a fan of the book. I'm not going to watch it. You like it? You like the book? You like it? No. No. My sister's a fan of the book. She will kill Emerald Fennell. I think in her sleep. I don't think your sister will enjoy it. Because if you're a faithful fan of the book. I was a fan of the book when I was 16. But not anymore. That's why she doesn't want to watch it. But I only know the director for doing stuff like The Crown and Salt Burn. Salt Burn. Exactly. Danish Girl. They have a character called Farley. And they're like guzzling cum from the bathtub or whatever.
[00:29:41] Yeah. That's one way to put it. So what would have been voted that year? I would have been okay with Minari or Judas. Black Messiah. But even Meg. But yeah. This is like. Let them have Koda. You know what I mean? Like yeah. Whatever. Boring. Get it. Let the Koda kids get their fun. I don't know. I just felt it was just refreshing. Because it's like.
[00:30:09] Originally it almost got rated R for language. And you're just like. Koda? Yeah. And you're like. Barely. Everybody. Everything they say is what your kids are already saying at school. Oh no they don't. Yes they are. You're not at school. So how can you say no they don't. Yes they do. People don't. People are in denial and idiots. Well. So I think the NPA has just been cynical. Because it's like. I can lose track of so many 80s and 90s movies that had colorful language.
[00:30:40] You know. Kids saying shit in every scene. So it's just like. Yeah. It's okay. And yes. They do colorful phrases. But guess what? That's going to be uncut when it's on cable TV. So it's okay. It's just. Exactly. And who watches cable TV? Sad families? Yeah. No one watches cable TV. Not even the old. The old generation. Like even my mom and my dad watch streaming shit. They're tired of TV. And then yeah. Don't. Or they have cable TV. Even my dad even watches sports like online. He has his way. And he has like channel. So yeah.
[00:31:09] I feel like cable TV parents are complaining. My God. AI is taking over our lives guys. Get a life seriously. Fair enough. So. The deaf community. Believe it or not. Has actually varied in their response on this. I had no idea. They praised the casting. In depictions. But. Thought they were self-sufficient. And sexually aware people. To be a welcome contrast. To previous depictions.
[00:31:37] While also a sensitive reader. And young adult. Found it misrepresented them. And their ability to thrive in 2021. While. This was. This came from Jenna Beacom. And. Said. She said that. She was thrilled that the movie exists. In the sense of contributing. To more deaf representation. And more opportunities. For better representation. But was disturbed by how negatively. It portrayed the deaf and coda experiences. I actually feel like. No.
[00:32:07] They actually portrayed honest people. They didn't make you know. Like caricatures. Of deaf. Yeah. Of course. Who am I to judge. Because this is the actual. Target audience. You know. Like. Or represented. But I still feel like. I didn't see anything insulting in it. Yeah. I thought the characters were fleshy. And very humane. You know what I mean. Yeah. So. She found the whole. Deaf means you can't enjoy music. Or understand anyone else's enjoyment. To be unfounded. It's like. See. That's a very minor part of the whole story.
[00:32:36] So I don't even know where she's coming from on this. Now. If she didn't like it. She could just say. But like. The reason just doesn't make any sense. But to try and pin it. Like exactly. Like. I feel like nowadays. People can just say. That it's like a movie. No. It has to be. The movie sucks. For blah blah blah. And you're an idiot. If you like it. I'm tired of this crap. If you want to call it average. Call it that. But don't. Like. The parents. Don't say that it's insulting. You know. Whatever. That's not even part of the parents. Like life. Like they're too busy.
[00:33:07] Again. Just. Having casual conversations. Playing dirty jokes on each other. So it's just like. I don't. It's not even part of the life. And I feel like it's a great propaganda for fishermen. Like. I really. When I watched this movie. I thought. Yeah. Fisherman. Why can't I be a fisherman? Become a fisherman. I really want to. I really wanted to live like. A cottage by the sea. And then. Go and fish. You know. And you live day by day. If there's a lot of fish. Then you're a happy person. If not. Then you're a sad person. You get drunk and sleep. Just this nomad life.
[00:33:36] Day to day life. I feel like it's so much more fulfilling. Than corp. Yeah. And. I. I have. Voted together with friends and family before. And yes. The. Uh. The police will stop you. If. It. Much like. A car. Registration. Is like. If something's off. So I thought that was a good. Just kind of. Plot barrier. A dent in the road. For them to get past. It's like. Okay. You want to continue. Agree. Yeah. And. He left his post. He can't do it by himself.
[00:34:06] The son's. Not always helpful. Especially because. You know. He can barely. Listen to what they're. Read and comprehend. Everything they're saying. So. And. Who's going to fend for him. Since you know. He's the breadwinner. Of the family. And. The mother's just having fun. So. And just. Basically. She does all the cooking. When he gets here. But. And then they give each other shit. Like. Hey. You know. I could fish. But I don't want to. So. Yeah. They're. They're a funny couple. I love the couple. The main couple. Not the daughter. And the weird kid.
[00:34:36] No. But the mother and the father. Were amazing. I agree with you. The weird kid. Yeah. Was annoying. And don't get me wrong. The movie intended him to be annoying. Because they just needed to show. That she was a strong person. And she's like. I don't have time for men in my life. And I'm not going to make time for you. You're just a stupid. You know. Boy next door. Exactly. You're a fling. You're a one time fling. They give her some. A reason to focus on her career. You know. Like. If men is this shitty. Oh. Better focus on my career now. You know what I mean. Like. Being a musician and all. So yeah. I totally get it.
[00:35:07] Apparently. There's going to be a stage. Musical adaptation. I had no idea. Before this recording. Makes sense. Great idea. Yeah. As of 2024. In August. That has become a thing. But. I mean. So Marlee Matlin. I mean. You know. She first became. Oscar winner. With Children of the Lesser God. That was an interesting movie. But that did not stay with me at all. I. Even though it was based on a 79 play. But this movie. Like. I've known her more. Just from her. Other indie movies. Like. It's My Party.
[00:35:37] And. Great TV guest spots. On West Wing. And what have you. But. It's like. I. I think this is definitely. Going to be. One of her top 10 roles. Like. This one. But. I can't believe that. Apple bid more than Amazon. For this movie. Some stones. Really? Wow. Yes. They bid out Amazon. Oh my god. I. I did see others say. The 2.2 million. Actually. No. The 10 million budget. Which is considered.
[00:36:06] Low budget standards. You know. It's got to be under. It's 15 million. Would be mid budget. Under 20 million. Is any of that. Can be. Considered low budget. But. I did see some insiders. Say the whole 10 million. Thing was a bull. Was bullshit. I. Could see that. Since. They're always. Lying. Or fibbing on their taxes. These movie studios. So. What do I know? But. I don't see why that. I don't know. I also don't see. Why that would change. Your interpretation. Of the movie. It didn't look like crap.
[00:36:36] So why would you care? No. No. It didn't. No. No. But. What do I know? I've filmed on a phone. And. I've seen others say. Oh. Don't film anything on a phone. I'm like. Have you seen Soderbergh movies lately? Have you seen. Exactly. In Tangerine. The Sean Baker one. Sean Baker. Had to work. Yeah. He worried about the story. And seeing if it made sense. And. It's like. Just because you're using a phone. Doesn't mean you don't. Not use anything else. It's like. Yeah. I'm going to use the sound guy. And I'm going to use a gaffer. I'm just being my own camera guy. So.
[00:37:06] I think. Filmmaking should be free. You should do whatever you want to do. Not what people tell you to do. Or what is supposed to be done. Mm-hmm. Totally. Like. So. It does get looped. Ironically. With. The nominee. Rival. Sound of Metal. Because both deal with. You know. Hearing impairment. But. No. But Sound of Metal. Is the bleakest shit. Anyone would ever watch. True. This one is uplifting. And very good. And I feel like it honors. The deaf community. But. Sound of Metal.
[00:37:36] It makes you feel like. This is something that will end your life. You know what I mean? Like. It's just so bad. True. Well. And. Riz was brilliant. I wish he would get an award for that. But this movie is just too much. Like. Sometimes I feel like. I need to forget about it. Forget that I even watched it. In my life. I just find it a shame. That you can only get it on Apple. You should be able to buy it. From. Other sources. Or rent it. Or watch it. So. But that's what they're doing. They're trying to corner cinema.
[00:38:06] They are making you feel like. You can't have access. To your favorite movies. Or movies that you like. So that you are forced. To. Subscribe. And pay. And like. Feel very distracted. Between a lot of streaming services. And shit like that. It is gatekeeping. That's what they want to do. It's basically. It's. It is some Russian roulette involved. So I hope it can be available. On some other platform. Now. An actual coda. And disability scholar. And disability scholar. Lennon J. Davis. Wrote.
[00:38:36] That. In response to. Viewers criticizing. The deaf characters. Inability to appreciate music. Was a trope. Featured in stuff like. Mr. Holland's opus. 1996. German film. Called Beyond Silence. And Sound of Metal. Lennon J. Davis. Wrote in response. This genre of music. Is glued to a different reality. It's as if birds were obsessed. With making movies. In which humans. Were miserable. About their inability to fly. And. I. I want to turn it around. On that. I want to say. Let's just say.
[00:39:05] For argument's sake. That is the argument. They're miserable. About their inability to fly. It's just giving a voice. Even if you don't relate. To that voice. But. I mean. I just feel like. This is just. Nitpicking. For the sake of nitpicking. Now. I'm not going to pretend. That I know anything. But at the same time. I'm also not going to. If it did so much. Good. Why would you take that away. From something. It's kind of like how. We're getting into the argument. On how.
[00:39:35] Blacks or whites. Shouldn't do a movie. About other races. It's like. Well that's inevitable. There's going to be. A black director. Who does a movie. About Puerto Ricans. There's going to be. A white director. Like Spielberg. Who does a movie. About Africans. And he got the blessing. From other authors. Like Oprah Winfrey. So. I don't. Understand. The ability. Just kind of. It's also the same. When they say that. A straight actor. Can't play a gay role. Yeah. But why? Eric McCormick has no. I mean he's like. Will and Grace made my career. I have no. I have.
[00:40:05] No doubts. I have no. Regrets. And it's like. I don't know why you would. You were great in the role. Everyone accepted you. In that role. I mean. It's kind of like how. Lou Diamond Phillips. Got accepted as. Native. Native American. Because he's just so good. He's already mixed. Yeah. Exactly. A lot of Native American roles. Exactly. It's like. It's okay to be. You can't call him a plant. He just. He did it so well. So I don't know. I. I feel like this is just. Nick picking.
[00:40:35] For the state of Nick picking. But. Yeah. Me too. So it went on to. Accolades. Win the U.S. Grand Jury Prize. The U.S. Dramatic Audience Award. And a special jury ensemble. Cast award at the festival. And she won. Best. Director. In the U.S. Dramatic section. So. I just feel like. This is a rare movie. Where I actually agree with the hype. And. And the fact that it made me. Want to go out. And seek out a cult movie. Of the same name. That it's a remake of. So. A good remake. Hey. See. Because it stood on its own two feet.
[00:41:05] So true. Yeah. Yes. Well. So. I mean. I wouldn't be surprised. If anyone got some money. On the back end for it. It was a smaller movie. Start out small. Get big. Ethan Hawke's been known. To do movies like that. So. I have. I have zero quibbles about it. If you don't care for it. I could understand. But I also don't see. Anything. Just. I thought there was some. Reasonable dramatic stakes. While also just being very pleasant. So I don't. Maybe I'm just. A whiny bitch. Who just likes fun stuff like that. I don't know.
[00:41:35] Maybe you are whiny bitches. Why not? Who cares? We just love movies. Definitely one of the best Apple movies. So. That's true too. That's true. Yeah. Any closing thoughts? Closing thoughts. Go watch Coda. And make up your mind about movies. Don't wait for someone to. Feed you something with a spoon. And tell you what to think. And how to feel. Tell us why you thought it sucked. It doesn't. But if you did. Tell us why. You have a hot team. Tell us if you like it. Or dislike it. We're open to it.
[00:42:04] You probably don't know why you hate it. I'm just going to put that out there. Exactly. If you talk to Cam. Then don't tell him you don't like it. You will like it. Period. Hear me out. Hear me out. Just tell me why you didn't like it. I don't think you know why you hate it. I think you just like movies that make you feel good. But what do I know? We'll return after these messages.
