[00:00:31] [SPEAKER_00]: You know what I noticed this year?

[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_00]: There's been a lot of talk about age.

[00:00:37] [SPEAKER_00]: On social media, people like to use the word auntie and shame women for getting older.

[00:00:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Age shaming.

[00:00:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Mainly towards the women.

[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_00]: What people don't know is getting old is a blessing and there are some positive aspects to it.

[00:00:58] [SPEAKER_00]: So I thought I would do an episode about aging and recognize September for being National Aging Month.

[00:01:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to Dreas Point of View. I am your hostess, Dreya.

[00:01:09] [SPEAKER_00]: And in 10 minutes or less, I would like to discuss a topic that I feel passionate about.

[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_00]: According to HealthyAging.net,

[00:01:31] [SPEAKER_00]: aging month is in its 30th year.

[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Carolyn Worthington, publisher of the Healthy Aging multimedia platform, founded it in 1992.

[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_00]: She states there should have been another time of year aside from

[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_00]: May

[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_00]: being older Americans month to draw attention to the positive sides of getting older.

[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_00]: She sees people taking more of an interest in healthy lifestyles and so do I.

[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm always hearing about someone doing Pilates or yoga.

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Later in life. In 2021, the Senate passed a resolution

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_00]: making September Healthy Aging Month.

[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_00]: So how can one celebrate National Aging Month?

[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_00]: According to HealthyAging.net, the first thing you can do is to move more and sit less.

[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Go for a walk.

[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Take a bike ride or even exercise.

[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Everyone seems to love the gym and if you don't look into a class.

[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_00]: There are plenty of low-cost classes for seniors in every city.

[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Get motivated by looking online for walking clubs to join or download the app All Trails to find trails and parks worldwide.

[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Volunteer.

[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_00]: There are plenty of places that could use your help.

[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Shelters, the American Red Cross and

[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Volunteer Match will help you find a place.

[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_00]: I know

[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_00]: when I volunteer I see seniors all over the place.

[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Some even choose to be the ushers that you see at stadiums and small venues.

[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_00]: That's right, the ones that you see at concerts and other events.

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_00]: They're not necessarily getting paid. They're volunteers and from what I've noticed they tend to be the friendliest ones there.

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Which is amazing to me because they're on their feet most of the night.

[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Find a passion that can help

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_00]: you meet new people.

[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Having a hobby keeps you from having an idle mind.

[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Don't take on more than you can handle.

[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Contact Mental Health America which helps promote the overall mental health of everyone. You can watch

[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_00]: your diet.

[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Cut back on salt since it's linked to high blood pressure and heart attacks.

[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Also add more fiber to your diet.

[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_00]: It can control your blood sugar and help with your digestive system.

[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_00]: The 2020 through 2025 dietary guidelines for Americans provide healthy eating recommendations for each stage of life.

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Quit smoking to improve your health as well as cut back on your liquor intake.

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_00]: There's a comprehensive study from the National Institute on alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Shows that alcohol consumption among other adults, especially women is increasing.

[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_00]: You know it's sad that there are so many stereotypes and myths with getting older.

[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Some people don't even like saying the word old. They dress it up and say seasoned.

[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Older adults are important members of society and are often the glue that holds families together.

[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_00]: My positive news story of the day comes from Oklahoma.

[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_00]: In Edmond, Glenn Simmons spent 50 years

[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_00]: for a crime that he did not commit.

[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_00]: He was convicted of shooting a liquor store clerk in 1974.

[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_00]: The city of Edmond owes him 7.15 million dollars.

[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Simmons was the longest served wrongfully convicted man in the U.S.
