Episode 665: Review of Airplane Etiquette (pt2)

[00:00:36] I want to apologize for sounding congested. That's what I feel like because I got off a flight a few days ago and I started sneezing. I'm taking stuff for it, so I'm like, you know what? Why not record an episode and be productive instead of laying around

[00:01:07] taking Alka-Seltzer Plus and whatever else I'm taking. So that also inspired me to talk about my experience flying. And I did an episode a few seasons ago about plane action, but it's time to do another because the things that I see on these planes really needs a review. Fridays are like a dedicated review day talking about my experience with a place.

[00:01:40] Or an event. And that's what I want to do. And that's what I want to talk about today. Airplane etiquette part two. Now, fortunately, this has not happened to me, but I have heard about it. I've read about it. I've seen it happen to others.

[00:02:01] And that's when people are deciding to sit in a seat that they didn't pay for. Imagine you spending your money to sit in a window seat and you see someone else in it. Now, someone looks at their boarding pass and they'll get up. That's what I've seen. And that's what I've had, fortunately.

[00:02:29] But I've heard of people who confront people sitting in their seat and they decide that they want to sit in it because it's more comfortable or they want to sit next to a certain person. And I couldn't believe it. I mean, you could involve the flight attendant, of course, but you take it upon yourself to tell someone they're in the wrong seat.

[00:02:51] They decide that they don't care. Imagine the audacity of that. Like, why would you want to sit in a seat that you did not pay for and stand ten toes down on that? That's insane to me. We all are trying to get somewhere, right? We all want to get from A to B in peace.

[00:03:21] Yet, you decide that you want to make someone else's trip less enjoyable by making yours more enjoyable and sitting where you'd like. The days of sitting where you'd like are over. Southwest has done away with that policy. They're assigned seats for a reason. Sit in your assigned seat. I can't believe the number of people that try to pull that on others.

[00:03:50] I've been reading a lot of posts about that lately and felt the need to do an episode. Someone comes in their seat. Give it to them, please. You have those who also don't want to get up when somebody's coming into their row. I've had that plenty of times, mainly by men, but usually by a few women. Actually, recently it happened. It was in an exit row.

[00:04:19] Extra leg space, and I'm a small person. I had space, but it's just a principle that you don't care enough about your fellow passenger enough to get up and let me pass. That's crazy to me. Now, if I step on your foot mistakenly, then don't say anything because you didn't give me ample space to pass.

[00:04:49] I see so many things on these planes. It's insanity at its best. I don't understand it. Another thing, of course, that we should respect each other for is when the flight attendants are doing their service, not sure why you feel the need to get up.

[00:05:16] Once you see the cars in the aisle, that's why you need to get up. That disrupts their service. That disrupts everyone else from getting what they need to get in a timely manner, all because you needed to go to the restroom. And obviously, you had to go. You got to go. I get that. But you choose a time when the cars are in the aisle. You can't wait a few seconds until the cars pass you to go. I don't understand that.

[00:05:44] And I see these things happening every time I travel. It's insane. I would say something about airplane attire. All airlines have their dress codes. I think it's gotten worse. The things that I see. These planes are freezing. The fact that you won't bring any type of cover-up. You'll go in shorts.

[00:06:15] You'll go in pajamas. You'll go in bonnet. You'll go in flip-flops. You don't care. I don't even know what else really to say about that. No one's saying going in suits, but I don't know. I just think having some type of respect about yourself helps. I saw this guy the other day with a hat on.

[00:06:44] And the profanity part was off of it, but it was F you respectfully. Something like that. And, of course, no one stopped him because it wasn't like there was profanity on it still. But, yeah, the things that people decide to wear on the plane, I don't know. I would give a second thought to it before I left the house.

[00:07:16] There's just a lot. There's just so much when it comes to airplane etiquette that we must learn. You've got those who, okay, the reclining of the seats, everyone has a right to recline. But the small fact that you are going to tell on that person for reclining is crazy to me.

[00:07:42] They don't recline that much where you can't do what you need to do. And kicking someone's seat or pushing someone's seat is never an acceptable thing to do. And the other thing I wanted to say is, I don't know, I just think it's gotten out of hand with the, well, I guess you can't do anything about it. I don't know, the screaming kids. It's insane.

[00:08:09] It seems like the longer the flight is, that's where the screaming kids are, where the parent is absolutely nothing. And you can't tell me you allow this at home. You allow them to scream and you do nothing? There's nothing you can give this kid. There's nothing you can bring your kids. You can't bring them snacks. You can't bring them anything you do. But you allow them to keep screaming. It's just insane. If you've traveled, what are some things that you would like to recommend?

[00:08:38] Airplane etiquette. Because there definitely needs to be some more standards set. Because it's really, and I'm not even talking about someone who travels on a low-cost carrier.
