[00:00:15] Welcome to me to welcome you to Dreas Point of View. I am your hostess, Dreya, and in the next 10 minutes or less, I will be offering you my perspective on a topic that I feel passionate about. I'd love to invite you to follow the show at Dreas Point of View on IG, Pinterest, Facebook, and Threads. You can also find me at Dreas Point on X and Spill, as well as at bluesky at dreaspointofview.bluesky.social.
[00:00:42] This next topic is something that I've been thinking about lately, and I think that many can relate to because it's everywhere. Rivals. Rivalry.
[00:01:05] You have sibling rivalry, which I never really had an issue with because I was the oldest by far. My siblings weren't born until much later, and we didn't even grow up together. We're not the closest either, but there isn't any rivalry between us. We know who's the youngest. We know who's the oldest.
[00:01:31] But I have heard stories about people and how their parents have favorites, so they've got that rivalry.
[00:01:45] And then there is the rivalry between schools. I don't think that'll ever change. Everyone thinks their school is the greatest, of course. I know in high school there was this thing.
[00:01:59] You have this school thinking they're the greatest because they're in performing arts, this school because they get these awards, and this, so on and so forth.
[00:02:11] But unfortunately, that doesn't change once you get older, especially in college.
[00:02:16] If you went to HBCUs, there's always a battle of whose school is better.
[00:02:22] And I know I still go through it when I tell people there's always some sort of rivalry, mainly with men, I've noticed.
[00:02:30] And then take a joy in saying they went to such and such.
[00:02:34] And I'm like, okay, congratulations, we both went to college.
[00:02:38] We both graduated.
[00:02:39] So if I didn't go to college, would you still be better than me?
[00:02:43] I don't understand where this is coming from.
[00:02:46] You know, you would think that once someone gets older, that certain things would stop.
[00:02:51] And then on to the bands.
[00:02:56] Battle of the bands is a big deal with colleges, especially with HBCUs.
[00:03:06] There are different bands that stand out.
[00:03:10] Others have won awards, nationally known, so on and so forth.
[00:03:15] But regardless of the facts, taste is subjective, right?
[00:03:19] I went to an event with two schools that I didn't attend.
[00:03:26] And it's a fun time.
[00:03:30] But I remember talking to two guys who went to one of the schools.
[00:03:39] And one of them was talking to me about their band.
[00:03:44] It seemed to be more people were there for their band than the other.
[00:03:48] And they both sounded great.
[00:03:50] It's just their band was bigger.
[00:03:52] It's more popular.
[00:03:54] And it's louder.
[00:03:56] Louder doesn't necessarily mean better, right?
[00:03:58] And even still, I don't care about the awards that were won.
[00:04:01] Taste is subjective.
[00:04:02] Either I like something or I don't.
[00:04:04] I'm not going to like it because it's popular and because you went there.
[00:04:08] And the one guy, he went to that particular school and I didn't say I didn't like it.
[00:04:15] I just said, I mean, it was louder.
[00:04:18] I don't like anyone who's louder.
[00:04:20] I don't care.
[00:04:21] I need something that's pleasing to the ear.
[00:04:26] And that wasn't that night.
[00:04:29] And I guess he took offense to it.
[00:04:31] I don't know.
[00:04:32] But I also noticed a lot of rivalry going on when they were battling back and forth.
[00:04:38] People were booing the other band.
[00:04:42] And I don't know.
[00:04:44] It seemed kind of disrespectful.
[00:04:45] It wasn't even fun anymore.
[00:04:50] And, yeah, and I'm thinking we are well out of college and we're acting like this.
[00:04:59] So that kind of killed the mood.
[00:05:02] But the rivalry between that, it never, between schools never ends.
[00:05:07] Carries on into sports.
[00:05:09] I remember seeing clips of games where there was a lot of flag planting going on.
[00:05:15] And I thought there was some championship that was won.
[00:05:18] Not just they won a game against their rival.
[00:05:21] And like a fellow podcaster stated, I don't know.
[00:05:25] I thought that was pretty unsportsmanlike and childish.
[00:05:31] Okay, you won.
[00:05:32] You beat them.
[00:05:33] Celebrate on your own time.
[00:05:34] You don't need to rub salt into the wound.
[00:05:39] Planting a flag was a bit much, I think.
[00:05:42] So, yeah.
[00:05:45] What happened to respecting the other team and good sportsmanship and just being a decent human being?
[00:05:58] Because I don't see that being a cool thing to do at all.
[00:06:02] But there will always be rivalry with sports.
[00:06:06] Even the teams that you like.
[00:06:07] Like when you talk to people, because I'm a sports girly, you tell them your team that you like.
[00:06:13] And they're going to think their team is better.
[00:06:16] And that'll never end.
[00:06:17] It's a never-ending conversation, really.
[00:06:20] Sports.
[00:06:20] Carries on into hometowns.
[00:06:25] In the same state or different states.
[00:06:29] You know, this person thinks that this is better than the other.
[00:06:34] The Northerners think they're better than the Southerners.
[00:06:37] And vice versa.
[00:06:38] And then you got the East Coast versus West Coast rivalry.
[00:06:41] Along with music.
[00:06:43] You know, this person is better than that person.
[00:06:47] And it just goes on and on.
[00:06:51] And I'm wondering how you handle that.
[00:06:53] If you were ever involved in some sort of rivalry.
[00:06:59] Do you engage in it?
[00:07:00] And I know you can't pass.
[00:07:01] Or maybe you enjoy it.
[00:07:03] I know I don't.
[00:07:05] I'd love to hear your response.
[00:07:08] Adria's point of view at yahoo.com.
[00:07:10] Because it gets old.
[00:07:12] The older that you get.
[00:07:15] And it was just something that was on my mind.
