[00:00:14] Allow me to welcome you to Dreas Point of View. I am your hostess, Dreya. In the next 10 minutes or less, I will be giving you my perspective on a topic that I feel passionate about. [00:00:39] November recognizes the sacrifices of veterans and the challenges military families face. This month provides support and resources to the families as well. November also gives people and organizations ways to show their gratitude to families.
[00:00:55] Now, I was brought up in a military family and I don't remember November being anything special short of Veterans Day. So this is pretty cool to come across in my research.
[00:01:07] National Military Awareness Month celebrates the strength and support of veterans, especially when they're being deployed. In 1996, it was recognized by the Armed Services YMCA. Over the years, this month has served as an effort to acknowledge the sacrifices of military families and assistance that they deserve. So true. There are many services that show appreciation.
[00:01:37] There is a free app called Sesame Street for military families. It addresses homecomings, deployments, and injuries. Many families are eligible for free YMCA or private fitness membership through the DOD initiative with the YMCA. You can also download a Military Family Month packet at asymca.org.
[00:02:06] It contains Military Family Month. It contains Military Family Month suggestions, a poster, and more.
[00:02:12] Home Depot is known to hire many military spouses. They have an employee-led military appreciation group that is dedicated to supporting military families and deployed reservists.
[00:02:25] There are many ways to participate in Veterans Military Awareness Month.
[00:02:30] You can attend local events.
[00:02:33] You can create a service member care package that would help ease deployment stress.
[00:02:39] You can thank a serviceman for their service.
[00:02:43] I see that happening quite often.
[00:02:45] You can adopt a soldier for the holidays.
[00:02:49] You can visit a VA hospital or nursing home.
[00:02:53] I know there's many in there who don't have families.
[00:02:58] You can volunteer at one of those places as well.
[00:03:02] You can make a donation, which is always helpful.
[00:03:08] Or, like I said, you can volunteer with a military service association.
[00:03:13] When you thank someone for their service, offer to buy them something if they're in uniform, like a coffee or a meal if they're behind you in line.
[00:03:21] I think that's a nice gesture.
[00:03:23] So pretty cool to know that that's what November celebrates.
[00:03:29] I would like to share a positive news story for the day.
[00:03:33] It comes from South Carolina.
[00:03:36] When Hurricane Helene hit, a woman named Elizabeth was getting married.
[00:03:41] Her dad, David Jones, was on his way to her wedding.
[00:03:44] But instead of driving two hours, he decided to walk.
[00:03:49] He braved dangerous conditions and took rides from strangers along the way.
[00:03:55] Twelve hours later, he arrived just in time for a wedding to walk her down the aisle.
[00:04:02] He's a very special man, she says, and has a very special love for us.
[00:04:09] He would go to the ends of the earth for us, come hell or high water.
[00:04:14] And he did that.
[00:04:16] Now, some may say he's crazy.
[00:04:20] Others will say it's whatever you have to do for your child.
[00:04:30] Now, I've got to be honest.
[00:04:32] I wouldn't do it.
[00:04:34] Not, and I'm a walker, but if the drive is two hours, not, I just wouldn't be able to make it.
[00:04:42] You'd have to stream it for me, but I wouldn't be able to do it.
[00:04:46] I just, not during a hurricane.
[00:04:49] I mean, I'm trying to save myself, but I know when you have a kid, you know, they should come first.
[00:04:56] But kudos to him and congratulations to Elizabeth.
