[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_00]: What people don't know is getting old is a blessing and there are some positive aspects to it
[00:00:58] [SPEAKER_00]: So I thought I would do an episode about aging and recognize September for being National Aging Month

[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_00]: May
[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Being older at Americans month to draw attention to the positive sides of getting older
[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_00]: She sees people taking more of an interest in healthy lifestyles and so do I
[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm always hearing about someone doing Pilates or yoga
[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_00]: later in life in
[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_00]: 2021 the Senate passed the resolution
[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_00]: making September
[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Healthy Aging Month
[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_00]: So how can one celebrate National Aging Month?
[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_00]: According to HealthyAging.net the first thing you can do is to move more and sit less
[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Go for a walk
[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Take a bike ride or even exercise
[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Everyone seems to love the gym and if you don't look into a class
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_00]: There are plenty of low cost classes for seniors in every city
[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Get motivated by looking online for walking clubs to join or download the app all trails to find trails and parks
[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_00]: worldwide
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Volunteer there are plenty of places that could use your help
[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Shelters the American Red Cross and volunteer match will help you find a place. I
[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Know when I volunteer I see seniors all over the place
[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Some even choose to be the ushers that you see at stadiums and small venues
[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_00]: That's right the ones that you see at concerts and other events
[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_00]: They're not necessarily getting paid they're volunteers and from what I've noticed they tend to be the friendliest ones there
[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Which is amazing to me because they're on their feet most of the night
[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Find a passion that can help
[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_00]: You meet new people
[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Having a hobby keeps you from having an idle mind
[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Don't take on more than you can handle
[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Contact mental health America which helps promote the overall mental health of everyone. You can watch

[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Cut back on salt since it's linked to high blood pressure and heart attacks
[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Also add more fiber to your diet
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_00]: It can control your blood sugar and help with your digestive system
[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_00]: The 2020 through 2025 dietary guidelines for Americans provide healthy eating recommendations for each stage of life
[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Quit smoking to improve your health as well as cut back on your liquor intake
[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_00]: There's a comprehensive study from the National Institute on alcohol abuse and alcoholism
[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Shows that alcohol consumption among other adults, especially women is
[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Increasing you know it's sad that there are so many stereotypes and myths with getting older
[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Some people don't even like saying the word old they dress it up and say seasoned
[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Older adults are important members of society and are often the glue that holds families together
[00:04:55] [SPEAKER_00]: My positive news story of the day comes from Oklahoma
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_00]: In Edmond Glenn Simmons spent 50 years
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_00]: For a crime that he did not commit
[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_00]: He was convicted of shooting a liquor store clerk in 1974
[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_00]: The city of Edmund owes him seven point one five million dollars
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Simmons was the longest-served wrongfully convicted man in the US
