[00:00:54] Without further ado, here's your hostess, Drea.

[00:01:07] You are listening to Dreas Point of View. I am your hostess, Drea.

[00:01:12] And today, I'm going to be talking to you about a

[00:01:15] short film that I saw at this film festival a while back.

[00:01:20] It's about an older woman. She had a terminal illness

[00:01:25] and she wanted to end her life early

[00:01:28] instead of

[00:01:30] living in pain.

[00:01:31] She had a husband who respected her decision and

[00:01:34] talked to her daughter and son-in-law about it and her

[00:01:38] daughter, as expected, didn't take it well thought she was

[00:01:42] being selfish.

[00:01:44] Years ago, I know we all remember Jack of Orchion.

[00:01:48] They called him Dr. Death. There was a huge deal around that,

[00:01:51] that what he was doing was wrong for helping people

[00:01:54] die,

[00:01:55] you know, mainly for religious reasons as well.

[00:01:58] So in the movie,

[00:02:01] one night the family got together. Now she had a full life, the woman.

[00:02:06] Family got together. She told her daughter she'd be

[00:02:09] doing it, so I guess she'd be taking something, whether it's pills or an elixir.

[00:02:14] She'd be doing it the next day and her daughter just refused to be there to watch.

[00:02:19] So the woman decided to do it a day early

[00:02:23] and she got dressed up.

[00:02:25] If there was ever a way I knew how to spend my last night on earth, that would be it. She got dressed up.

[00:02:32] They danced,

[00:02:33] had a nice meal,

[00:02:35] a lot of laughs

[00:02:37] and the husband eventually put the elixir in her wine,

[00:02:40] gave it to her and then he put the other half in his wine. Now she had no idea that he planned to leave with her.

[00:02:46] He told this touching story,

[00:02:48] couldn't live without her,

[00:02:50] didn't want her to be alone.

[00:02:52] So they wrote a note.

[00:02:56] The daughter found it the next day.

[00:02:59] Now there wasn't a dry eye in the house after this.

[00:03:02] I mean you really had to just see this. The whole thing was just so emotional for it to be a short.

[00:03:07] Of course if I saw it was a short film under about 20 minutes.

[00:03:11] After the film they had the actors there talking about it.

[00:03:14] I don't remember what the lady said but she had a relatable situation dealing with her mom.

[00:03:19] Now only 10 states do allow assisted deaths. That's California,

[00:03:25] Colorado,

[00:03:27] DC,

[00:03:28] Hawaii,

[00:03:30] Maine,

[00:03:31] New Mexico,

[00:03:33] New Jersey,

[00:03:34] Oregon,

[00:03:36] Vermont and Washington state.

[00:03:38] Now two doctors have to sign off on the diagnosis

[00:03:42] and you have to be given a prognosis about having six months to live.

[00:03:47] Now I already have my final wishes written down. Everybody pretty much knows what I want to do. That's

[00:03:53] not an option for me.

[00:03:56] Now I don't have children or do I plan to have any

[00:04:00] even if I had a spouse.

[00:04:02] I'm not sure if I would change that mainly for religious reasons.

[00:04:05] I don't know if I wanted to be gone a little bit early.

[00:04:09] Even if I am in pain, I definitely want to

[00:04:13] be with them a little bit longer.

[00:04:16] Now

[00:04:18] I don't know could you do this like who?

[00:04:21] I'm not against this for someone else though.

[00:04:23] I totally get it because who wants to be in pain? What purpose would you serve?

[00:04:29] If you are in pain every day, I don't know if I would be able to watch my spouse if he considered

[00:04:37] doing that. I don't know. I mean I wouldn't want anybody else to be in pain so

[00:04:41] for that reason I would be for it but for religious reasons I would not

[00:04:45] want to speed up my death.

[00:04:49] Knowing that I possibly wouldn't be going to heaven from it. Not like I'd be going anyway.

[00:04:55] I'm hoping. But you know I don't think I would be

[00:05:00] going if I assisted in my death so just something to think about. Would you

[00:05:07] consider dying with dignity?

[00:05:11] My podcast of the day is One Mike Black History. The host is
