[00:00:00] Everybody hold on to your seats.
[00:00:02] More colossal than a roller coaster.
[00:00:05] A bigger rush than free falling.
[00:00:10] Cool.
[00:00:10] The thrill ride of your life.
[00:00:13] Isn't at any amusement park.
[00:00:15] Do they think I'm doing this for fun?
[00:00:19] But it's yours to give.
[00:00:22] Speed, now on videocassette.
[00:00:25] Buy the ultimate gift.
[00:00:27] Give it for $19.98 or less.
[00:00:30] It's a Jacked Up Review Show.
[00:00:39] It's a Jacked Up, Jacked Up Review Show.
[00:00:46] It's a Jacked Up Review Show.
[00:00:55] It's a Jacked Up Review Show.
[00:00:58] Oh, Jacked Up.
[00:01:16] It's Die Hard on an elevator.
[00:01:17] Die Hard on a bus.
[00:01:18] And Die Hard on a subway.
[00:01:21] We are talking about the Speed movie franchise.
[00:01:23] Which later includes Die Hard on a slow moving cruise ship.
[00:01:26] Hi, my name is Johnny Patoki.
[00:01:28] You may know me from the Attack of the Bee Movies Podcast.
[00:01:31] I've also worked on some of these shows before.
[00:01:34] It's been a while.
[00:01:35] It's been a long time.
[00:01:36] So when I was asked to come here and talk about how great the movie Speed was
[00:01:39] and how quote unquote hysterical Speed 2 is, I couldn't turn it down.
[00:01:44] Because Speed is one of my favorite movies from when I was a teenager.
[00:01:48] It's a great flick.
[00:01:49] It's a 1994 movie for those of you that don't know.
[00:01:51] Starring Kenner Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Daniels, Dennis Hopper, and John Harkin.
[00:01:56] Really good cast.
[00:01:57] It's directed by Jan de Bont.
[00:01:59] I don't know if I said that right.
[00:02:00] Written by Graham Yost.
[00:02:02] He sounds familiar.
[00:02:03] I can't place him though.
[00:02:04] It's a 1994 action movie about a bomber that pretty much feels he got screwed.
[00:02:09] And he wants to exact revenge and get ransom money and whatnot.
[00:02:14] So the movie opens and we have Jack who's played by Kenner Reeves
[00:02:17] and we have Harry who's played by Jeff Daniels.
[00:02:19] And they are trying to disarm a bomb that is hooked to an elevator with 13 people in it.
[00:02:23] Being held ransom for $3 million by a guy named Howard Payne.
[00:02:27] Howard Payne is played by Dennis Hopper.
[00:02:29] Perfectly by Dennis Hopper.
[00:02:31] Dennis Hopper, when I was younger I didn't really know much about him
[00:02:35] because a lot of his movies from the 60s and 70s,
[00:02:37] and I hate to admit it but a lot of movies from the 60s and 70s for me,
[00:02:40] especially then were a hard watch.
[00:02:42] Some are now too to be fair.
[00:02:43] So I didn't really know much about him.
[00:02:45] He plays a fantastic bad guy in this.
[00:02:47] Really good.
[00:02:48] He's watching this.
[00:02:49] This happened from afar.
[00:02:50] They defuse the bomb, a corner Payne,
[00:02:52] and Payne gets the upper hand and takes Harry hostage.
[00:02:54] This day has been real disappointing I don't mind saying.
[00:02:57] Why? Because you didn't get to kill everyone?
[00:02:59] There will come a time, boy, when you'll wish you never met me.
[00:03:03] Mister, I'm already there.
[00:03:05] See, I'm in charge here.
[00:03:07] I drop this stick, huh?
[00:03:09] And they pick your friend up with a sponge.
[00:03:11] Are you ready to die, friend?
[00:03:14] Fuck you.
[00:03:15] Oh, in 200 years, I'll be the best man in the world.
[00:03:19] In 200 years, we've come from my regret,
[00:03:21] but I have one life to give for my country to fuck you.
[00:03:25] So I believe Harry kind of says...
[00:03:27] They were talking about something earlier in the movie,
[00:03:30] and he goes, what do you do?
[00:03:31] And he goes, you shoot the hostage
[00:03:33] and take the hostage out of the equation.
[00:03:34] I don't remember.
[00:03:35] I'm paraphrasing a bit.
[00:03:36] So in this, he's got Harry,
[00:03:38] and he's holding Harry trying to escape,
[00:03:40] and Jack, aka Count Harifes,
[00:03:42] shoots Harry in the leg,
[00:03:44] dropping him to the ground,
[00:03:45] and now Payne doesn't have any protection.
[00:03:47] So he shoots the hostage,
[00:03:48] and if you've ever heard the phrase, shoot the hostage,
[00:03:50] it's because of this movie.
[00:03:51] You shot me.
[00:03:52] I can't believe it.
[00:03:53] I'm giving you a medal for shooting me.
[00:03:58] Harry, you told me to.
[00:04:01] So Payne detonates a bomb,
[00:04:03] and they all think he's dead.
[00:04:04] Yada yada yada.
[00:04:05] A couple days later, a bus explodes in LA.
[00:04:09] Cops try to figure out what's going on,
[00:04:10] and then they get contacted by Payne.
[00:04:12] And Payne says basically that
[00:04:15] he wants $3.7 million.
[00:04:17] If he doesn't get this money,
[00:04:19] another bus will explode.
[00:04:21] The trick with this bus though is that
[00:04:23] the bomb is triggered to arm
[00:04:25] when the bus exceeds 50 miles per hour
[00:04:27] and detonate if it gets below 50 miles per hour,
[00:04:29] hence named speed.
[00:04:30] So in LA and a lot of big cities,
[00:04:32] sometimes buses go on the freeways,
[00:04:34] and Keanu Reeves is racing to this bus
[00:04:36] trying to get there before this bomb arms.
[00:04:40] Unfortunately he doesn't make it,
[00:04:41] and he does get on the bus after 50 miles per hour.
[00:04:44] Fantastic scene of the bus and him
[00:04:48] Well the bus is just going straight at this point.
[00:04:50] Nothing is out of the ordinary to the people on the bus.
[00:04:52] But the racing to the bus scene
[00:04:54] and him getting onto the bus,
[00:04:56] very excellent scene.
[00:04:57] The stunts in this movie are top notch to me.
[00:05:00] Special effects are pretty damn good.
[00:05:02] And it honestly feels like,
[00:05:04] even though it's an action movie,
[00:05:05] it feels very much along the caliber to me
[00:05:08] of Die Hard with a Vengeance,
[00:05:10] which I thought was a great movie.
[00:05:11] It knows what it is,
[00:05:12] and it's not trying to feel too real,
[00:05:14] but you can see some of this happening.
[00:05:16] It's not bad.
[00:05:17] Jack gets on the bus,
[00:05:18] and the bomb had already armed.
[00:05:20] The bomb armed just before he got there.
[00:05:22] So there's a felon on board for some reason
[00:05:26] that thinks Jack is there to arrest him.
[00:05:28] Which, come on, really?
[00:05:30] You're going to risk your life jumping onto a bus
[00:05:33] at 50 miles per hour for that?
[00:05:34] So he starts shooting,
[00:05:35] he takes out the bus driver.
[00:05:36] The reason this part is relevant is because
[00:05:39] this is when Sandra Bullock comes into play.
[00:05:41] Sandra Bullock had some experience driving a bus,
[00:05:43] and her name is Annie,
[00:05:45] Annie Porter,
[00:05:46] and she is fantastic.
[00:05:48] First off, I just love Sandra Bullock.
[00:05:50] Let me get that out there.
[00:05:51] I still do.
[00:05:52] I think she's great.
[00:05:54] I think she's attractive.
[00:05:55] I think she's a great actress.
[00:05:56] I think everything.
[00:05:57] She seems like a really nice person.
[00:05:58] I could be wildly wrong,
[00:06:00] but who knows?
[00:06:01] So you're a cop, right?
[00:06:03] That's right.
[00:06:04] Well, I should probably tell you
[00:06:06] that I'm taking the bus
[00:06:07] because I have my driver's license revoked.
[00:06:09] What for?
[00:06:11] Speeding.
[00:06:12] She wants to slow down the bus
[00:06:13] so they can get help for the bus driver,
[00:06:14] and Jack says,
[00:06:15] no, we can't do that.
[00:06:16] And then he's forced to tell them
[00:06:18] that there's a bomb on the bus.
[00:06:19] Now, of course, the passengers
[00:06:20] aren't happy about this.
[00:06:21] So Jack crawls under the bus
[00:06:23] holding onto like through a hatch
[00:06:25] and crawls under there
[00:06:26] holding on to stuff.
[00:06:27] And he calls Harry while he's down there
[00:06:29] and they're talking about the type of bomb it is.
[00:06:32] And the police department tells him,
[00:06:34] hey, there's an unopened section of freeway.
[00:06:36] Go there.
[00:06:37] You know, that way there's no other people in danger
[00:06:39] other than the bus and Jack.
[00:06:41] And the police chief,
[00:06:46] who I think is Joe Morton,
[00:06:47] is a guy named Mac.
[00:06:49] He's demanding to Payne,
[00:06:50] hey, we want to offload these passengers.
[00:06:52] Mac tells Ken Reeves to offload the passengers.
[00:06:55] And then he's like, well, we can't
[00:06:56] because if we do, Payne's watching.
[00:06:58] And if he sees it happening,
[00:07:00] he'll blow it up.
[00:07:02] Okay, Jack, this is it.
[00:07:04] Don't get dead.
[00:07:06] So Payne for some reason
[00:07:07] keeps calling Jack directly.
[00:07:08] I don't remember why.
[00:07:09] I think it's just a mess with him.
[00:07:10] Jack, nothing tricky now.
[00:07:12] You know that I'm on top of you.
[00:07:14] Do not attempt to grow a brain.
[00:07:16] Jack and him discuss letting the bus driver
[00:07:19] be evacuated because he got shot.
[00:07:21] And another really cool scene,
[00:07:24] vehicle pulls up next to the bus.
[00:07:26] They're getting him across the bus.
[00:07:28] Now, I don't know what speed these guys
[00:07:30] were actually driving at,
[00:07:32] but it's a very good,
[00:07:33] it's a very nice well-done sequence.
[00:07:35] Plus in the process, this woman tries to escape
[00:07:37] and she tries to escape.
[00:07:38] A smaller bomb by the door explodes.
[00:07:40] So, you know, that's pretty intense.
[00:07:45] So they give little stunts here and there like that.
[00:07:47] Keanu Reeves chemistry with Sandra Bullock,
[00:07:49] I think is great.
[00:07:50] I thought all the, I thought the chemistry
[00:07:51] with all the leading actors in this movie
[00:07:53] and actresses, leading thespians,
[00:07:54] I guess, whatever.
[00:07:55] I thought it was really good
[00:07:56] and it was enjoyable.
[00:07:57] And it was a fast paced, fun movie to watch.
[00:07:59] So at this point now they find out,
[00:08:01] Hey, the freeway ends.
[00:08:04] How are we?
[00:08:05] They got to get across this gap.
[00:08:07] This is the scene we all know and love.
[00:08:08] Even if you've never seen Speed,
[00:08:10] you've probably seen this or seen it recreated.
[00:08:12] Mythbusters did it even.
[00:08:13] And they, he convinces her to accelerate
[00:08:18] and she accelerates.
[00:08:19] They jump this gap with a bus.
[00:08:22] Awesome.
[00:08:23] Like totally far-fetched,
[00:08:25] but come on, that's pretty awesome.
[00:08:27] And I will say, I'm gonna throw this in there.
[00:08:29] I think action movies peaked in the night,
[00:08:33] in the eighties and nineties with this kind of stuff.
[00:08:36] And by the mid-2000s,
[00:08:38] they just didn't have it to me anymore.
[00:08:40] It was all about gunplay and like,
[00:08:43] I mean, the fight scenes are great.
[00:08:45] Don't be wrong.
[00:08:46] There are some good action movies.
[00:08:47] John Wick, those are great.
[00:08:48] But I think for me,
[00:08:50] the best action movies to this day
[00:08:51] are B movies right now.
[00:08:53] But anyways, but this feels,
[00:08:54] I mean, this was great at the time.
[00:08:56] The bus jumps it, they finish it.
[00:09:00] They end up going to the LA airport
[00:09:02] so they can go like in a big circle
[00:09:03] and keep it about 50 miles per hour on the runways.
[00:09:05] They also find out that this guy, Payne,
[00:09:07] is watching them through the camera on the bus.
[00:09:09] This is pretty ahead of its time
[00:09:11] because some of the things in this movie,
[00:09:14] technology-wise, were a little bit ahead of their time.
[00:09:16] Not that they couldn't be done,
[00:09:17] but to watch people live like that
[00:09:20] was a little ahead of its time.
[00:09:21] And then they use a newscopter
[00:09:26] to intercept the feed that Payne's watching.
[00:09:29] And they loop the feed while Keanu Reeves
[00:09:32] goes under the bus again,
[00:09:34] try to disarm it.
[00:09:36] But something happens and it doesn't work out.
[00:09:39] So they have this news crew
[00:09:41] looping the data transmission,
[00:09:43] which is awesome.
[00:09:44] The news crew's like, yeah, we'll help out.
[00:09:45] Nowadays, they'd be like,
[00:09:46] no, we want to see the carnage
[00:09:47] and the blood and guts when it all explodes.
[00:09:49] Because that's the world we live in.
[00:09:52] So he couldn't...
[00:09:57] So they get another vehicle,
[00:09:58] and they get the vehicle next to the bus.
[00:09:59] They're doing 50 miles per hour,
[00:10:00] and they offload all the passengers.
[00:10:02] And then Jack and Annie
[00:10:05] end up having to escape through a floor access panel.
[00:10:07] The bus hits a Boeing 707, I think it is,
[00:10:11] explodes, great explosion.
[00:10:15] Again, the whole thing,
[00:10:16] I can't even do it justice.
[00:10:17] It's that good of an action scene.
[00:10:19] The movie's almost two hours long,
[00:10:22] and it feels, it goes by so fast
[00:10:24] because it's such a fast-paced movie.
[00:10:25] Again, Payne escapes.
[00:10:26] They're all waiting for him.
[00:10:27] They're trying to bust him again.
[00:10:29] He escapes.
[00:10:30] You're crazy.
[00:10:32] You're fucking crazy.
[00:10:34] Oh, no.
[00:10:35] Poor people are crazy, Jack.
[00:10:38] I'm eccentric.
[00:10:39] And it turns out he kidnaps Annie,
[00:10:41] and he hijacks the subway train
[00:10:43] and kills the driver,
[00:10:44] and he puts a vest on Annie
[00:10:46] that has a pressure switch
[00:10:47] that he's holding if he lets go.
[00:10:48] Annie blows up and dies.
[00:10:50] She's chained to a subway pole.
[00:10:52] Him and Jack start fighting
[00:10:53] on top of the subway train,
[00:10:54] which is awesome.
[00:10:55] It's a great fight sequence.
[00:10:57] Granted, I always wonder in these movies
[00:10:58] how the prime of their life,
[00:11:00] like 30-some year old,
[00:11:01] late 20s, early 30s,
[00:11:03] real fit guy has issues
[00:11:05] with a 70-year-old geriatric,
[00:11:06] but whatever.
[00:11:07] I'm the guy with the plan
[00:11:08] because I'm smarter than you.
[00:11:13] As they're fighting,
[00:11:14] Jack kind of holds him up
[00:11:16] while he's trying to strangle him,
[00:11:18] and Payne gets decapitated.
[00:11:21] Yeah.
[00:11:26] I'm taller.
[00:11:28] By a train signal.
[00:11:29] The trigger never goes off.
[00:11:31] Annie's safe,
[00:11:32] except for the fact that now
[00:11:33] the train has run away.
[00:11:34] It's heading towards
[00:11:35] a construction site, I think,
[00:11:37] and Annie can't get free
[00:11:39] because she's handcuffed to the pole.
[00:11:40] Payne died, had the keys.
[00:11:42] The decapitation is, I mean,
[00:11:44] it's not super gory,
[00:11:45] but it's awesome.
[00:11:46] I mean, what a way
[00:11:47] for the bad guy to go, you know?
[00:11:48] So to save Annie,
[00:11:50] they speed the train up
[00:11:52] as fast as it can go,
[00:11:53] so it jumps to track and derails,
[00:11:54] thinking that would be safer
[00:11:55] than what's going to happen
[00:11:56] if it doesn't.
[00:11:57] So it derails,
[00:11:58] crashes in the construction area.
[00:12:00] At this point,
[00:12:01] Jack had already deactivated the vest, too.
[00:12:03] I might want to add that in there.
[00:12:04] I want to say this movie
[00:12:05] had a lot of cut-the-blue wire, too.
[00:12:06] It's been a while.
[00:12:07] I haven't watched it in a few years.
[00:12:08] I might watch it after this.
[00:12:09] So they jump to track,
[00:12:10] go through a construction site,
[00:12:11] and it ends up on Hollywood Boulevard.
[00:12:12] Kind of a cool scene.
[00:12:14] And Jack and Annie kiss,
[00:12:17] and everyone's looking surprised
[00:12:18] and watching what happens.
[00:12:20] I've heard relationships
[00:12:21] based on intents.
[00:12:22] Experiences never work.
[00:12:24] Okay.
[00:12:27] We'll have to base it on sex, then.
[00:12:30] Whatever you say, ma'am.
[00:12:32] Overall, this is a great movie.
[00:12:33] I love this movie.
[00:12:34] But still, it was a good movie.
[00:12:35] There were some other notable actors in it.
[00:12:37] Alan Ruck was in it.
[00:12:38] Oh darn.
[00:12:39] It was just...
[00:12:40] I just thought it was a great movie.
[00:12:41] And it was kind of like...
[00:12:42] It was similar to the movie
[00:12:43] Runaway Train with John Voight,
[00:12:44] I guess, in a way.
[00:12:45] Well, at least the ending was.
[00:12:47] But I mean, the concept has gone, you know,
[00:12:49] it's been around for a long time.
[00:12:51] But honestly, the...
[00:12:54] It's just great.
[00:12:55] The special effects were good.
[00:12:57] The acting was solid.
[00:12:59] The writing was good.
[00:13:01] There were a few twists and turns
[00:13:02] in the plot that were good.
[00:13:04] We find out something I forgot to mention.
[00:13:05] You find out he's a jilted...
[00:13:06] Payne was a jilted Atlanta SWAT cop.
[00:13:11] And this is why he was taking revenge.
[00:13:14] They actually filmed it on some of the actual highways
[00:13:17] and stuff.
[00:13:18] LA.
[00:13:19] The movie even got great reviews.
[00:13:20] Also won, like, a bunch of different awards
[00:13:22] from different associations.
[00:13:23] The Academy Award for Best Sound Effects Editing.
[00:13:26] It was nominated for Best Film Editing.
[00:13:28] It won Best Sound from the BAFTA Awards.
[00:13:30] It won Best Editing at the BAFTA Awards.
[00:13:32] It won Favorite Actress at the
[00:13:34] Blockbuster Entertainment Awards.
[00:13:35] When that used to...
[00:13:36] That's an old sentence, isn't it?
[00:13:37] It had been nominated and won a bunch of awards.
[00:13:41] A lot of it was for sound editing,
[00:13:42] but it was nominated for Best Movie,
[00:13:44] Best Performa, even MTV, which...
[00:13:46] I know that's, you know, it's MTV.
[00:13:48] It had won a good amount of awards.
[00:13:50] Dennis Hopper actually won Best Villain for it.
[00:13:53] So it was a good flick.
[00:13:57] We'll return after these messages.

[00:15:13] with this crowd of cool cats.
[00:15:15] Check them out.
[00:15:23] Here back is the movie and action elites, Jonathan Mark.
[00:15:26] Welcome.
[00:15:27] Always glad to be here.
[00:15:28] I'm your host Sully, and we got some exclusive trivia
[00:15:31] from the recent podcast, 50 Miles Per Hour,
[00:15:34] formed in 2023.
[00:15:36] It has interviewed all kinds of people involved
[00:15:38] with the making of these awesome blockbuster movies.
[00:15:41] So I'll be sharing some of those cool facts.
[00:15:43] So this franchise stars Joe Morden
[00:15:46] from The Brother From Another Planet
[00:15:48] in Executive Decision in T2 as Lieutenant Mack.
[00:15:52] Also stars veteran bad guy Dennis Hopper
[00:15:56] as Howard Payne in a cool comeback role.
[00:15:58] But it's mainly best known for making megastars
[00:16:01] out of Keanu Reeves, a point break in Bill and Ted fame,
[00:16:04] as well as Sandra Bullock,
[00:16:06] who would later grace our screens with blockbusters
[00:16:09] such as Gravity, The Miss Congeniality films,
[00:16:11] and lo and behold, other Oscar-bait movies like Crash.
[00:16:15] So what was your intro to this movie?
[00:16:17] It was always on everywhere.
[00:16:19] AMC, USA Network, FX, this was a Fox movie.
[00:16:23] I watched it. It was just coming on FX all the time.
[00:16:27] Nonstop. It's really pretty brutal at the same time
[00:16:30] without being too much, unlike some movies
[00:16:32] where if you just modify it one way,
[00:16:34] you're killing the enjoyment.
[00:16:35] But like there's not too much.
[00:16:37] The language is very infrequent,
[00:16:39] and it really only gets that R just because
[00:16:41] of the security guards stabbed in the face
[00:16:43] at the beginning and Beth Grant's character
[00:16:45] jumping off the bus and getting run over.
[00:16:47] Yeah, that's why.
[00:16:49] Very cool trivia again.
[00:16:51] They were making a Die Hard type movie,
[00:16:53] and lo and behold, the production designers
[00:16:55] worked on this.
[00:16:56] So they worked in the same Pacific Union Transport
[00:16:59] bus company that they used in Die Hard 1 and 3.
[00:17:02] It's kind of in this universe of Val Verde.
[00:17:06] Before we get into this, what are some other
[00:17:08] similar movies to Speed that you would also recommend?
[00:17:12] This one has inspired more than we realize,
[00:17:15] whether it's some other infamous bomber movie
[00:17:18] like Blown Away or even Terminator Genesis.
[00:17:22] You know the scene.
[00:17:24] I was about to mention Blown Away as they came out.
[00:17:26] They came out around the same time.
[00:17:28] Yeah, Grand Myas took a similar story
[00:17:30] with Broken Arrow and Die Hard 3 was reworked
[00:17:33] to be very much like this,
[00:17:35] as well as The Siege with Denzel Washington.
[00:17:38] Just about any season of 24 has similar kind of tension.
[00:17:42] It seems like it was kind of the one-up
[00:17:45] of all these Die Hard clones.
[00:17:47] If you weren't trying to be like Die Hard,
[00:17:49] then you wanted something like Under Siege
[00:17:51] or something like True Lies or even The Rock.
[00:17:54] You know, Sean Connery and Nick Cage.
[00:17:57] I do have one fact I should mention
[00:18:00] about this movie that I do know.
[00:18:02] I remember years ago on the Action Elite site
[00:18:07] when Jeff Steakham was interviewed
[00:18:09] that this was originally the newest film.
[00:18:12] Absolutely.
[00:18:14] He had a bad agent and he lost it,
[00:18:17] especially once it moved from Paramount to Fox.
[00:18:21] Yeah.
[00:18:23] Made a star out of producer Mark Gordon,
[00:18:27] who has gone on to produce other blockbuster movies
[00:18:31] like The Patriot and Saving Private Ryan,
[00:18:33] as well as mega TV franchises
[00:18:37] like Ray Donovan, Criminal Minds, and Grey's Anatomy.
[00:18:41] I love how it's been referenced everywhere.
[00:18:44] We already talked about some of the other things.
[00:18:46] There was that Melissa McCarthy episode of SNL
[00:18:48] where it's like the skit ends once the bus blows up.
[00:18:52] Jurassic Park 2 is a total nod at the very end.
[00:18:56] Jan DeBot kind of uses similar tension
[00:18:58] in his follow-up blockbuster movie, Twister.
[00:19:01] This constantly makes so many best movies of all time,
[00:19:04] bliss, favorite disaster movies.
[00:19:08] But yeah, as we go on, I'll mention 50 miles per hour,
[00:19:12] the recent podcast that talks about the mega hit.
[00:19:15] So what's your favorite standalone line from this?
[00:19:18] There's so many to choose.
[00:19:20] I'm going to rip out your fucking neck.
[00:19:22] Pop Quiz Hot Shot obviously has been referenced
[00:19:24] in the Mercenaries video game.
[00:19:26] That's always been my favorite.
[00:19:28] It's pop quiz hot shot.
[00:19:30] I personally love it when the partner Jeff Daniels,
[00:19:33] as Harry goes,
[00:19:35] I'm going to go home and have some great sex.
[00:19:38] I forgot about that line.
[00:19:40] He's getting all drunk and he's like,
[00:19:42] you're really a piece of work, Jeff.
[00:19:44] I'm going to go home and have some sex.
[00:19:49] Harry, you're going to go home and puke.
[00:19:52] Well, that'll be fun too.
[00:19:54] It's a dynamite movie.
[00:19:55] I watch it, even a portion of it.
[00:19:57] I will just stop down and watch it any time it's on.
[00:20:00] I see people trying to wreck it and I'm like,
[00:20:02] no, fuck you.
[00:20:03] Do not do this to me.
[00:20:05] You are not going to wreck this mega movie hit.
[00:20:08] Of course they try to wreck it because
[00:20:10] people love to rag on Keanu's acting,
[00:20:12] even though this was a chance for him to shine,
[00:20:16] not just to play.
[00:20:17] Especially when Jan Devon said in recent interviews
[00:20:20] how he toned him down significantly.
[00:20:22] He was going Shakespearean style and he's like,
[00:20:25] you're too intense.
[00:20:26] I don't want you to be all shatner.
[00:20:28] Just tone it back a bit.
[00:20:30] Considering the amount of research he did,
[00:20:32] Sandra Bullock took some driving lessons
[00:20:34] and he decided to just look at some bike cops.
[00:20:38] He even suggested changes.
[00:20:40] He's like, no, no, this guy wouldn't be a hot shot.
[00:20:42] He'd be a yes sir, no sir kind of guy.
[00:20:44] Obviously, point breaks fine.
[00:20:47] Like you, I don't think it would be somewhere
[00:20:50] in his repertoire of awesome movies,
[00:20:52] but to me, he'll always be Neo Anderson
[00:20:54] and Jack Traven from Speed and Ted.
[00:20:58] And John Wick, obviously now.
[00:21:01] But even his one-off movies like Siberia,
[00:21:05] Chain Reaction and Man of Tai Chi are worth a watch.
[00:21:09] And Constantine as I always mention.
[00:21:12] Constantine, he's having fun in that.
[00:21:14] Jan Devon was a great cinematographer.
[00:21:18] Worked for James Foley, Joel Schumacher,
[00:21:21] mainly John McTernan and Paul Verhoeven.
[00:21:25] I was going to say, because he was the cinematographer
[00:21:27] for Donnie Hawn.
[00:21:28] Absolutely.
[00:21:30] And just, lethal weapon free was the last one he shot
[00:21:33] before he made his directorial debut.
[00:21:35] And Mark Gordon had to actually beg him
[00:21:37] to come back to the pitching meeting
[00:21:39] just because he was so nervous.
[00:21:40] And they're like, hey, well, he's a good talent.
[00:21:43] You don't have to get all worked up
[00:21:45] by how he's stalking and everything.
[00:21:46] You just got to listen.
[00:21:48] He was originally attached to Helm Drop Zone
[00:21:50] with Wesley Snipes the year later.
[00:21:53] That was getting retooled.
[00:21:55] And Speed almost, when it was at Paramount,
[00:21:58] thank God this didn't happen.
[00:21:59] It almost got conceived as the third Beverly Hills cop
[00:22:01] at Paramount.
[00:22:03] That would not have worked.
[00:22:05] I don't think it would have worked for Axel Foley.
[00:22:07] I'm sorry, guys.
[00:22:08] I love them to death, but man.
[00:22:10] No, that's too much of a revenge.
[00:22:13] Studio executives.
[00:22:14] And this is not an IMDb, I swear.
[00:22:16] This is all recent, recent shit on this podcast.
[00:22:19] They originally wanted Charlie Sheen to play Jack.
[00:22:22] And Holly Berry to play Annie.
[00:22:24] And Holly Berry, you know, Charlie was not interested.
[00:22:27] He already done hot shots for Fox and wanted something else.
[00:22:30] And Holly kicked, kicked herself sideways because she, you know,
[00:22:35] what was on the script was not very necessarily impressive.
[00:22:38] The producers liked it because it was a fun kind of pot boiler.
[00:22:42] Yeah.
[00:22:43] Reni Harlan was attached.
[00:22:46] He wasn't interested.
[00:22:47] White H Little.
[00:22:48] You could see Reni Harlan.
[00:22:49] Yeah.
[00:22:50] Yeah.
[00:22:51] And White H Little suggested the rear projection,
[00:22:54] which they did not use until they were doing the subway scene where
[00:22:58] they were showing at least something projecting in the background.
[00:23:02] And Mark Gordon said this best is like,
[00:23:05] we considered Michael Bay before he was Michael Bay.
[00:23:10] So he did bad balls.
[00:23:11] Amazing.
[00:23:12] But you know,
[00:23:13] I think he would have had fun with it,
[00:23:15] but he would have been very careless at the same time.
[00:23:18] Which is okay.
[00:23:19] Cause that's what Michael Bay kind of is.
[00:23:21] He's a shame to me.
[00:23:22] He's just like Stallone where he's very shameless and ego driven.
[00:23:25] Devant just kept getting passed around.
[00:23:27] And finally they said, yes.
[00:23:28] The only thing that he added the director was the bus jump.
[00:23:32] And he did that during the pitch meeting.
[00:23:35] And I just find it interesting.
[00:23:37] It was like that, that is his identity.
[00:23:39] He's like, we cannot have that without that.
[00:23:41] Further on while they were still having trouble with getting the
[00:23:44] leads,
[00:23:45] William Baldwin was runner up. You know,
[00:23:47] he just done flat liners and back draft.
[00:23:50] They also considered Michael Madsen, but Fox vice president.
[00:23:54] Peter churnin was very unimpressed with how he looked to where he
[00:23:57] then offered him the role of a villain on the spot.
[00:23:59] And Madsen being all confused. He's like, is my agent,
[00:24:02] or are you playing a trick on me? I'm going to pass.
[00:24:04] It was making me nervous.
[00:24:05] I love you, Madsen, but yeah, no,
[00:24:07] you would not have been right for this.
[00:24:09] He wouldn't have had the charisma.
[00:24:10] I couldn't see them as a villain. Not so much Jack Traven.
[00:24:12] That or maybe one of the SWAT hide heads.
[00:24:15] Just jump, just jump.
[00:24:16] But I don't know.
[00:24:19] Jack Traven was originally.
[00:24:21] A character that was originally made to be a hotshot cop before
[00:24:24] they made him be more of a reserved polite SWAT guy.
[00:24:27] And Annie was originally supposed to be a pain med addicted ambulance
[00:24:30] driver.
[00:24:31] So I was like,
[00:24:32] I'm going to have to get a lot of that in my head.
[00:24:35] I'm going to have to get a lot of that in my head.
[00:24:37] That was a very, very good one.
[00:24:38] So there's a couple of things that you could see in the movie.
[00:24:40] One of them is that Annie was supposed to be a pain med addicted
[00:24:43] ambulance driver.
[00:24:44] Before they made her be a civilian.
[00:24:46] Who lost her driver's license. Now I had no idea,
[00:24:48] but apparently on one of the mini DVDs.
[00:24:51] Blu rays before the more recent one.
[00:24:54] They had some deleted scenes and in one extended scene, she,
[00:24:57] she reveals herself to be a graphic designer.
[00:24:59] And that made better sense to me,
[00:25:00] because I would always see that on their websites. I'm like,
[00:25:03] I don't recall.
[00:25:04] I don't know.
[00:25:05] I don't know what to say.
[00:25:06] I don't know what to say.
[00:25:07] Oh,
[00:25:08] Ramias recalled that when he had Jeff Daniels SWAT partner,
[00:25:12] Harry.
[00:25:13] He originally had him in earlier draft that he was going to be.
[00:25:16] The actual bomber.
[00:25:17] Like he got all angry that Jack, you know, injured a.
[00:25:20] Civilian. He got all fed up and.
[00:25:23] Disillusioned.
[00:25:24] And fortunately that never made it Jeff Daniels way. His issue was.
[00:25:29] I remember seeing him in the movie.
[00:25:31] And he was like,
[00:25:32] I'm going to have to get my ass kicked and I'm going to have to
[00:25:35] get my ass kicked and I'm going to have to get my ass kicked.
[00:25:37] And he's like,
[00:25:38] I'll do it. But you got to have me die way later.
[00:25:40] And Josh, we didn't.
[00:25:41] The dialogue.
[00:25:45] I loved how in those recent interviews.
[00:25:47] For 50 miles an hour.
[00:25:49] How Daniels revealed how he was inspired by Roy Scheider
[00:25:51] looking at the shark and jaws.
[00:25:53] He had seen him in an interview talk about that.
[00:25:55] And he was like,
[00:25:56] I'm going to have to get my ass kicked and I'm going to have to get
[00:25:59] my ass kicked.
[00:26:00] And he was looking at it in the face during his final moment.
[00:26:03] But.
[00:26:04] I'm good on him for taking a chance on this because he had just
[00:26:07] done, you know, Broadway plays that no one had seen other Indy
[00:26:10] smaller pitchers.
[00:26:11] Comedies.
[00:26:12] But he just wrapped up and dumber against his agents.
[00:26:15] You know,
[00:26:16] Recommendation, but it wasn't going to be out till the fall.
[00:26:19] Yeah.
[00:26:20] It's fortunately got him his gig hosting SNL that year.
[00:26:22] So good year for him.
[00:26:23] He's worked on movies like sneakers and what have you and war games.
[00:26:26] He was one of the other executives helping them with the rewrites.
[00:26:29] And he also was noting how, again, yeah, we got to have,
[00:26:32] there'd be a death later in the movie.
[00:26:34] Otherwise we're going to rob ourselves of dramatic reward.
[00:26:37] And he was feeling that since much like diehard,
[00:26:40] this was inspired by seventies disaster movies.
[00:26:42] He was inspired by the movie juggernaut.
[00:26:44] Which if anyone has seen with Anthony Hopkins,
[00:26:46] that is a very.
[00:26:47] Awesome.
[00:26:48] Richard Fleischer.
[00:26:49] You know.
[00:26:51] I think it's a good movie.
[00:26:52] It's a good movie.
[00:26:53] It's a good movie.
[00:26:54] It's a good movie.
[00:26:55] It's a good movie.
[00:26:56] It's a good movie.
[00:26:57] Diffusing a bomb on a cruise liner ship.
[00:26:59] Storyline and.
[00:27:00] You can totally see some speed.
[00:27:02] In that movie.
[00:27:11] One of the other rewriters is Paul and to Nassio who people
[00:27:15] might know it later went on to be the lead writer on house.
[00:27:18] And in the movie.
[00:27:19] He's like, I'm a
[00:27:20] good actor.
[00:27:20] I'm a good actor.
[00:27:21] I'm a good actor.
[00:27:22] So we had to have some of the names and unfortunately,
[00:27:25] that's what caused some disdain with the various actors
[00:27:28] playing the bus passengers.
[00:27:29] Cause they had more momentum.
[00:27:30] They had more material to work with.
[00:27:33] That went away.
[00:27:34] So then Jan DeBond had to have a lot of ad-libbing.
[00:27:36] He's like, I swear,
[00:27:37] you're not going to be a featured action.
[00:27:38] You do have a purpose in this movie.
[00:27:40] And we've just filmed stuff with you.
[00:28:13] And then we had to have a lot of dialogue.
[00:28:15] And then we had to have a lot of dialogue.
[00:28:17] And then we had to have a lot of dialogue.
[00:28:18] And then we had to have a lot of dialogue.
[00:28:19] And then we had to have a lot of dialogue.
[00:28:20] And Jan DeBond was like, yeah, no,
[00:28:22] we did not fucking add any stabbing.
[00:28:24] Where the hell is that coming from?
[00:28:25] Of course,
[00:28:26] the passengers of the bus held hostage at the whim of a
[00:28:29] madman.
[00:28:30] The women of a madman.
[00:28:31] I like that.
[00:28:32] Most of the dialogue does seem to be on to Nassio's
[00:28:35] regarding Howard pain.
[00:28:36] But hopper still.
[00:28:37] He was like,
[00:28:38] I'm glad that they passed on Charles Groton being the
[00:28:43] villain. That was Josh Weedon's idea.
[00:28:45] He wanted a beloved character actor to be the villain.
[00:28:48] And I'm like, yeah, no,
[00:28:49] I don't see Groton as a sociopath or a cynic,
[00:28:53] but not an evil douchebag blowing people up.
[00:28:57] Ed Harris was brought in and passed twice as he did
[00:29:02] not want to be in an action movie starring someone from
[00:29:05] Bill and Ted.
[00:29:06] This was back when Harry was still written as the
[00:29:08] trader though,
[00:29:09] so he might not have liked that either,
[00:29:10] but all good.
[00:29:11] So tell me what you think of these actors who were
[00:29:14] offered 5 million to play the villain role,
[00:29:16] but they all passed because they didn't see much
[00:29:18] to it.
[00:29:19] Christopher Walken.
[00:29:20] I could probably see that.
[00:29:21] I can see that.
[00:29:22] Sean Penn.
[00:29:23] No,
[00:29:24] Russell.
[00:29:25] I would have been cool,
[00:29:26] but I don't know.
[00:29:27] I felt like he would have been type of a
[00:29:29] guy.
[00:29:30] I don't know.
[00:29:31] Cool.
[00:29:32] But I don't know.
[00:29:33] I felt like he would have been typecast as a
[00:29:34] villain from that point on as opposed to
[00:29:36] antihero roles.
[00:29:38] He got Tim Ross.
[00:29:40] It would have been to Patriot Games knockoff.
[00:29:43] I think I prefer him in roles where you don't
[00:29:46] know what he is.
[00:29:47] Plus we wouldn't have gotten him in Pulp Fiction.
[00:29:49] Alan Rickman.
[00:29:50] That's too obvious though.
[00:29:52] Yeah,
[00:29:53] it would have been like he would have definitely
[00:29:54] been in direct to video hell by that point.
[00:29:56] Robert Duvall.
[00:29:57] I'm unsure of.
[00:29:58] I love him to death,
[00:29:59] but I don't get it.
[00:30:00] Same here.
[00:30:01] Yeah,
[00:30:02] I don't know about villain,
[00:30:03] especially this villain.
[00:30:04] Now the director found Gary Oldman to be a
[00:30:08] good pick,
[00:30:09] but too typical and wanted him to be a
[00:30:10] non-typical pick,
[00:30:11] but the producers were adamant about it.
[00:30:13] And you'll find this funny.
[00:30:14] Someone who later came in and this franchise
[00:30:17] William Defoe was offered.
[00:30:18] That's not a surprise.
[00:30:23] I'm glad he was in part two because he
[00:30:25] made that one way more watchable.
[00:30:26] Jeff Bridges
[00:30:27] and Kevin Klein.
[00:30:28] Again,
[00:30:29] Kevin Klein.
[00:30:30] I love you,
[00:30:31] Kevin,
[00:30:32] but as the villain,
[00:30:33] I don't be an action movie.
[00:30:34] Come on.
[00:30:35] No dramatic comedic actor like
[00:30:37] Fishkull Wanda.
[00:30:38] Producer Mark Gordon and director
[00:30:41] Jan DeBont wanted Randy Quaid.
[00:30:43] Hear him out.
[00:30:44] At this time they just found him an
[00:30:46] interesting character actor,
[00:30:48] but the studio considered him a comedy
[00:30:49] guy wrong for the part.
[00:30:51] Thank God the studio had some sense.
[00:30:53] He was one.
[00:30:54] He was similarly.
[00:30:55] He was in the writers other movie
[00:30:57] Hard Rain, but he worked there.
[00:30:59] I see him totally as a character.
[00:31:01] Yeah,
[00:31:02] you gotta be a sheriff or a crazy
[00:31:04] NRA guy.
[00:31:05] You can't be.
[00:31:06] It can't be just a crazy madman
[00:31:09] hamming it up.
[00:31:11] So Dennis Hopper was picked
[00:31:13] number 44 on the list.
[00:31:15] 44.
[00:31:16] He was the 44th pick.
[00:31:18] Man,
[00:31:19] Jeff Goldblum is rumored to have
[00:31:20] been considered,
[00:31:21] but that trivia cannot be confirmed
[00:31:22] according to the podcast.
[00:31:23] So here's where it gets even wilder.
[00:31:27] So Jeff Daniels character Harry
[00:31:29] originally his surname is Sears in
[00:31:32] the script and they changed it to
[00:31:33] Temple later on.
[00:31:35] Again,
[00:31:36] it's just amazing how this was a
[00:31:38] nothing burger of a job and it ended
[00:31:40] up being getting him some extra work
[00:31:42] showing he could do drama and
[00:31:44] blockbuster movies.
[00:31:45] Joe Morden.
[00:31:46] That's that's right.
[00:31:47] Lieutenant Mack was coincidentally
[00:31:49] trained by the same SWAT stunt team
[00:31:52] that shot him in Terminator 2.
[00:31:55] But yes,
[00:31:56] he envisioned his character as some
[00:31:59] kind of Vietnam War veteran and he
[00:32:01] looked for all kinds of advice from
[00:32:03] the guys since it was very unlikely
[00:32:05] there would be probably a black man,
[00:32:07] you know,
[00:32:08] lieutenant in charge of an L.A.
[00:32:09] SWAT team at that time,
[00:32:10] but he just wanted to just,
[00:32:11] you know,
[00:32:12] make a positive character much like
[00:32:13] the guys on the bus.
[00:32:14] They didn't want to be playing
[00:32:15] stereotypes or Hicks or gang
[00:32:17] bangers.
[00:32:18] Baby mamas.
[00:32:19] So good on them.
[00:32:21] They all stuck to their guns and
[00:32:23] just said,
[00:32:24] hey,
[00:32:25] can you reword this a bit?
[00:32:26] I definitely rate things not only
[00:32:28] in some of my top 10 favorite
[00:32:30] movies,
[00:32:31] but definitely top 10 action.
[00:32:32] Like I can't imagine this movie
[00:32:34] not being out there somewhere.
[00:32:35] I've shown it to siblings or
[00:32:37] show it to family.
[00:32:38] And even if they find it
[00:32:39] unintentionally cheesy at some
[00:32:40] points,
[00:32:41] there's just something about it.
[00:32:42] They just find emotionally
[00:32:43] riveting.
[00:32:44] Even family members I know who
[00:32:45] don't care for action movies
[00:32:46] generally like this one.
[00:32:47] There's just something about the
[00:32:48] characters that stand out.
[00:32:49] I think it's in your top 100
[00:32:50] movies.
[00:32:51] Like it is easily in my top 10
[00:32:54] action films,
[00:32:55] especially for the 90s at the
[00:32:56] time.
[00:32:57] I used to always stop tracks.
[00:32:58] It had a lot of exclusive pop
[00:32:59] songs that weren't in the movie.
[00:33:01] Most of the score off of Mark
[00:33:03] Mancino.
[00:33:04] Intense.
[00:33:05] That's another thing.
[00:33:06] It's been used in countless
[00:33:07] trailers that people won't
[00:33:08] realize.
[00:33:09] It was the right place.
[00:33:17] Part 10.
[00:33:18] With the right guy.
[00:33:20] Seems too perfect.
[00:33:21] And exactly the wrong time.
[00:33:25] Position charges throughout
[00:33:30] the ship.
[00:33:31] I've been in worse situations
[00:33:32] than this.
[00:33:33] A panicking does not help.
[00:33:34] Trust me.
[00:33:35] Are you going to stop me now?
[00:33:36] My friend.
[00:33:37] To cruise control.
[00:33:40] I am never leaving the house
[00:33:41] again.
[00:33:42] Pg-13 rush hour hits the water
[00:33:43] June 13th.
[00:33:44] Now we get to speed two.
[00:33:47] Now I remember reading why
[00:33:49] speed two, why Keanu Reeves
[00:33:51] didn't want to do it.
[00:33:52] And I don't recall exactly
[00:33:54] what the problem was or what
[00:33:57] I don't remember if it was
[00:33:58] because he didn't like the
[00:34:00] plot or what I don't remember
[00:34:01] exactly what it was.
[00:34:02] So they replaced him with
[00:34:04] Jason Patrick.
[00:34:05] Nothing is Jason Patrick.
[00:34:07] I like him in a lot of
[00:34:08] things and the bad guy in
[00:34:09] this one is William DeFoe.
[00:34:10] And William DeFoe plays a
[00:34:12] fantastic bad guy.
[00:34:14] I spent a great many years
[00:34:16] developing computer systems
[00:34:17] for these cruise lines,
[00:34:18] including this baby.
[00:34:20] And then I got tossed away.
[00:34:22] Right?
[00:34:23] He always does.
[00:34:24] The problem is this movie is
[00:34:26] hilarious for the wrong
[00:34:27] reasons.
[00:34:28] He's a jilted...
[00:34:29] So once again, let's just
[00:34:32] get this out of the way.
[00:34:33] Sandra Bullock is now dating
[00:34:34] a guy named Alex Shaw.
[00:34:36] Alex Shaw is played by
[00:34:37] Jason Patrick.
[00:34:38] She is still Annie Porter.
[00:34:41] And he's lied to her and
[00:34:43] doesn't tell her that he is
[00:34:45] a LAP Police Department cop.
[00:34:47] And I want to say it's
[00:34:48] because of what happened
[00:34:50] between her and Jack at
[00:34:52] the end of the leg,
[00:34:54] between the movies.
[00:34:55] Now I will say this movie
[00:34:56] decides that it's going to
[00:34:58] try to go big,
[00:34:59] go bigger than speed.
[00:35:00] And by bigger, I mean it
[00:35:02] ends up on a cruise ship.
[00:35:03] We'll get to that in a
[00:35:04] second because that's where
[00:35:05] some of the ridiculousness
[00:35:06] happens.
[00:35:07] So he's a cop and he's
[00:35:09] chasing on a motorcycle,
[00:35:10] chasing a vehicle that's
[00:35:11] got stolen goods in it.
[00:35:12] When he catches the
[00:35:13] driver, somehow in LA,
[00:35:15] big city,
[00:35:16] Annie runs into him during
[00:35:18] her driving test and sees
[00:35:20] that he's on the SWAT team
[00:35:22] and she's pissed because
[00:35:23] he lied and he told her
[00:35:25] he was a beach officer.
[00:35:27] Like at some point,
[00:35:28] wouldn't she have been
[00:35:29] in his place?
[00:35:30] Like you have nothing...
[00:35:31] How do you hide all that?
[00:35:32] So right there,
[00:35:33] a little hilarious
[00:35:34] scene.
[00:35:35] Definitely taking some
[00:35:36] liberties with, you know,
[00:35:37] stuff.
[00:35:38] So to make it up to Annie,
[00:35:39] Alex says,
[00:35:40] hey look,
[00:35:41] I got you a surprise
[00:35:42] Caribbean cruise on
[00:35:43] the Seabourn Legend.
[00:35:44] They're on the ship
[00:35:45] and John Geiger,
[00:35:47] a former employee of
[00:35:48] the cruise,
[00:35:49] so basically he Geiger
[00:35:50] hacks into the ship's
[00:35:51] computer system.
[00:35:52] Again, not too far
[00:35:53] ahead of its time.
[00:35:54] This one came out in 1997.
[00:35:57] So hacking was kind of
[00:35:58] like something people
[00:35:59] used to hack into
[00:36:00] the computer system.
[00:36:01] So it's kind of like
[00:36:02] a little bit of a
[00:36:03] hack.
[00:36:04] Hacking was kind of like
[00:36:05] something people talked about.
[00:36:06] Granted, it was always
[00:36:07] done in the wrong way.
[00:36:08] It's always like
[00:36:09] graphical and stuff
[00:36:10] when it's really all
[00:36:11] text-based, but whatever.
[00:36:12] Anyways,
[00:36:13] so he hacks into the
[00:36:15] ship's computer system.
[00:36:16] The next night,
[00:36:17] he sabotages the
[00:36:18] communication system.
[00:36:19] He kills the captain
[00:36:20] and he blows up
[00:36:21] two ship engines.
[00:36:22] Then he calls the bridge
[00:36:23] and talks to the
[00:36:24] first officer,
[00:36:25] a guy named Juliano.
[00:36:26] He says, hey,
[00:36:27] captain's dead.
[00:36:28] I'm in charge.
[00:36:30] I will give him credit
[00:36:31] as a bad guy.
[00:36:32] He tells him to
[00:36:33] evacuate the ship.
[00:36:34] As the ship is being
[00:36:35] evacuated, he starts
[00:36:36] stealing jewelry from
[00:36:37] the ship's vault.
[00:36:38] They were introduced
[00:36:39] to a girl named Drew.
[00:36:40] She's a young
[00:36:41] deaf girl.
[00:36:42] She is stuck in
[00:36:43] an elevator.
[00:36:44] We also find out
[00:36:45] that there's a group
[00:36:46] of people trapped
[00:36:47] behind some fire doors
[00:36:48] in a hallway
[00:36:49] filling with smoke.
[00:36:50] So they can't escape.
[00:36:51] While Geiger was
[00:36:52] kind of being nice
[00:36:53] saying evacuate the ship,
[00:36:54] he didn't think about
[00:36:55] the fact that things
[00:36:56] like that might happen.
[00:36:57] So we flash forward
[00:36:58] or we go to another scene.
[00:36:59] Annie and Alex
[00:37:00] are attempting to
[00:37:01] get into the last lifeboat.
[00:37:02] Right now, up till now,
[00:37:04] it hasn't been that bad.
[00:37:06] Remotely blowing up
[00:37:07] the engines,
[00:37:08] I guess he could have
[00:37:09] wired it somehow,
[00:37:10] whatever.
[00:37:11] It hasn't been that bad.
[00:37:12] We're having an inside guy.
[00:37:13] They get in the lifeboat
[00:37:14] and Geiger now
[00:37:15] has set the boat
[00:37:16] to just keep going.
[00:37:18] We find out later on
[00:37:19] he's targeting,
[00:37:20] he wants to hit
[00:37:21] an oil tanker with it.
[00:37:22] But for now,
[00:37:23] it's just going.
[00:37:24] Basically, he wants
[00:37:25] to take down the cruise
[00:37:26] line that fired him.
[00:37:27] He created the software.
[00:37:28] This is his baby
[00:37:29] and then he was fired.
[00:37:30] So he's jilted
[00:37:31] and he's angry.
[00:37:32] Typical plot line from a movie.
[00:37:34] Again, nothing so far.
[00:37:35] The beginning, corny.
[00:37:37] Like hilarious.
[00:37:38] Like, oh, you're going
[00:37:39] through your driver's test.
[00:37:40] Hey, look, I'm LAPD.
[00:37:41] But this part not so bad.
[00:37:44] It was all right.
[00:37:47] So the lifeboat
[00:37:50] they're trying to get on,
[00:37:51] the winch fails.
[00:37:52] So they can't get back on.
[00:37:54] So they bring everybody
[00:37:55] back on deck.
[00:37:56] And then,
[00:37:57] I don't remember exactly how,
[00:37:59] but Alex figures out
[00:38:00] that Geiger is who's
[00:38:01] controlling the ship.
[00:38:02] Because remember,
[00:38:03] Geiger is portraying himself
[00:38:04] as a passenger.
[00:38:05] So he's kind of hiding,
[00:38:06] you know,
[00:38:07] he's a wolf in sheep's
[00:38:08] clothing here.
[00:38:09] He goes after him.
[00:38:10] Him and Giuliano go
[00:38:11] to the to Geiger's cabin.
[00:38:13] And Geiger blows explosives
[00:38:15] up that are in a room
[00:38:16] because everyone's an
[00:38:17] explosives expert
[00:38:18] in these two movies.
[00:38:19] Keep that in mind.
[00:38:20] He's a software programmer
[00:38:21] and apparently
[00:38:22] an explosives expert.
[00:38:23] Now we're getting
[00:38:24] kind of corny.
[00:38:25] Like, OK, he blows up
[00:38:26] the room.
[00:38:27] Annie and another guy
[00:38:28] figure out that these people
[00:38:29] are trapped behind the doors
[00:38:30] I mentioned earlier.
[00:38:31] And they use a chainsaw
[00:38:32] to cut open the doors
[00:38:33] to bail them,
[00:38:34] to let them out
[00:38:35] and help them escape.
[00:38:36] I don't understand
[00:38:37] why you would have
[00:38:38] a chainsaw on a cruise ship.
[00:38:39] How?
[00:38:40] Why?
[00:38:41] Like, fire axe?
[00:38:42] Jaws of life?
[00:38:43] Sure.
[00:38:44] Chainsaw?
[00:38:45] A bit of a stretch.
[00:38:46] But again,
[00:38:47] so far not horrible,
[00:38:48] but you can see
[00:38:49] where it's kind of
[00:38:50] paralleling
[00:38:51] the original one, right?
[00:38:52] Like, they go,
[00:38:53] you know,
[00:38:54] pain blows up
[00:38:55] and they think he's dead.
[00:38:56] They go to the room,
[00:38:57] what does it look like?
[00:38:58] OK, it's green,
[00:38:59] like a spray,
[00:39:02] deodorant can?
[00:39:03] I don't know.
[00:39:04] It can't sink!
[00:39:05] It's a grenade.
[00:39:06] They kind of discuss stuff
[00:39:07] and Alex tells the navigator
[00:39:08] to flood the ship
[00:39:09] and open the ballast doors,
[00:39:10] hoping this would
[00:39:11] slow the ship down.
[00:39:12] So if you flood
[00:39:13] the ballast tanks,
[00:39:14] the ship sinks a little bit,
[00:39:15] stays floating,
[00:39:16] but it makes it heavier.
[00:39:18] And if the doors are kept open,
[00:39:19] it puts drag on it,
[00:39:20] so it should slow it down.
[00:39:21] Here's my other problem
[00:39:22] with this being a speed movie.
[00:39:24] Speed is in a vehicle
[00:39:25] doing 50 miles per hour.
[00:39:26] Speed 2 is on a ship,
[00:39:28] a cruise ship,
[00:39:29] that to the best of my knowledge,
[00:39:31] probably doesn't do
[00:39:32] 50 miles per hour.
[00:39:33] It's not going to blow up
[00:39:34] if it slows down.
[00:39:35] There's no real reason
[00:39:36] it should be called
[00:39:37] Speed 2 Cruise Control.
[00:39:38] Like, it could have just been
[00:39:39] called Cruise Control or something.
[00:39:40] I don't know.
[00:39:41] It didn't seem like
[00:39:42] it really had a good tie to it.
[00:39:44] Alex sees Drew
[00:39:45] get out of the elevator
[00:39:46] and he runs the saver
[00:39:47] and at the same time
[00:39:48] he notices Geiger leaving the vault.
[00:39:50] So now Alex is holding
[00:39:51] Geiger at gunpoint.
[00:39:52] Geiger being the super genius he is,
[00:39:54] closes the fire doors in between them
[00:39:56] and Alex loses them.
[00:39:57] We find out that Geiger
[00:39:58] designed the autopilot system.
[00:40:00] Like I said,
[00:40:01] he's taking revenge on them
[00:40:02] and he was fired because
[00:40:04] he contracted copper poisoning.
[00:40:06] Now, I'm not really 100% sure
[00:40:08] how that would happen,
[00:40:10] being the designer or whatever.
[00:40:12] Escapes by using a grenade
[00:40:13] because grenades are easy to come by.
[00:40:15] Now we find out
[00:40:16] that the oil tanker
[00:40:17] is going to crash
[00:40:18] into this oil tanker.
[00:40:19] They're able to make it
[00:40:20] not crash into the oil tanker
[00:40:22] and now is when the movie
[00:40:23] gets really hilarious in a bad way.
[00:40:27] I like bad movies,
[00:40:28] don't get me wrong.
[00:40:29] There's two movies
[00:40:38] that I thought were horrible.
[00:40:39] At least parts of them.
[00:40:41] Under Siege 2
[00:40:43] the last half hour or so
[00:40:45] actually most of the movie
[00:40:47] and this
[00:40:48] because now they missed a tanker,
[00:40:50] they skim along it.
[00:40:51] The ship is heading for an island.
[00:40:53] It's heading for St. Martin
[00:40:56] and the ship is heading
[00:40:58] for St. Martin.
[00:40:59] And oh, sorry, before that,
[00:41:02] Alex decides he's going to dive
[00:41:03] under the ship with a steel cable,
[00:41:05] put it in the propeller
[00:41:06] because this is safe
[00:41:07] and should work, right?
[00:41:10] Tangle the propeller up
[00:41:11] to cause it to stop.
[00:41:12] In the meantime,
[00:41:13] Geiger realizes he's trying to do it
[00:41:15] so he jams the winch
[00:41:17] while Alex is underwater.
[00:41:18] It breaks off the ship
[00:41:19] and frees the cable.
[00:41:20] Geiger then takes Annie hostage
[00:41:22] because why not?
[00:41:24] Now I would assume at this point
[00:41:26] Annie really needs to rethink
[00:41:28] her life choices.
[00:41:31] They escape on a boat
[00:41:32] and Alex and Dante,
[00:41:35] Dante was the photographer
[00:41:36] that helped Annie,
[00:41:40] they go into the ship's bilge area
[00:41:41] and they use the bow thrusters
[00:41:43] which is something that ships have now
[00:41:45] and they are able to maneuver the ship
[00:41:49] to just skim the tanker
[00:41:52] but now it's heading straight into a marina
[00:41:54] at St. Martin,
[00:41:55] a small St. Martin town.
[00:41:56] Now it becomes ridiculous
[00:41:58] because now it crashes into this town
[00:42:01] and it keeps going.
[00:42:02] I mean, I kid you not,
[00:42:04] it goes for a while,
[00:42:05] like way longer than it should,
[00:42:07] like ridiculously.
[00:42:09] Remember in movies,
[00:42:10] Spaceballs, if you've ever seen it,
[00:42:11] how long they showed a ship
[00:42:12] in the beginning?
[00:42:13] Kind of like that,
[00:42:14] like ridiculously long.
[00:42:15] Here's another problem too,
[00:42:16] why I think this movie is, quote, hilarious.
[00:42:19] I don't think the chemistry
[00:42:20] was there between Patrick and Bullock.
[00:42:22] I don't think the chemistry
[00:42:23] was there between anybody.
[00:42:26] And to be honest,
[00:42:27] I think the best acting in this was Defoe
[00:42:29] because Defoe always plays a great goofball bad guy
[00:42:32] or good guy or whatever.
[00:42:34] And I mean, Sandra Bullock,
[00:42:36] it was Sandra Bullock,
[00:42:37] she wasn't bad either.
[00:42:40] So now they, let's see,
[00:42:43] I don't know,
[00:42:44] there's like a boat chase
[00:42:46] and I think Alex takes a spear gun
[00:42:49] and hits the boat
[00:42:51] and then he uses the rope
[00:42:52] and reels himself into the boat.
[00:42:55] And then they get into a plane,
[00:42:56] it's like a seaplane
[00:42:58] and he rescues Annie
[00:43:00] and they escape from the plane
[00:43:03] because the float,
[00:43:04] the one float piece falls
[00:43:06] and they're on top of it
[00:43:07] and they land in the ocean
[00:43:08] and Geiger's trying to fly over
[00:43:09] the oil tanker
[00:43:10] and he can't
[00:43:11] and he gets impaled on the ship
[00:43:14] and the ship and the tanker,
[00:43:16] the helicopter,
[00:43:17] or helicopter,
[00:43:18] the airplane and the tanker
[00:43:20] and the tanker explodes.
[00:43:21] You know what?
[00:43:22] I don't even care anymore.
[00:43:23] It's just not a good movie.
[00:43:25] And then it ends with him proposing
[00:43:26] to Sandra Bullock saying,
[00:43:27] would you wear this ring for a while?
[00:43:29] Honestly,
[00:43:31] same director as the first one,
[00:43:33] action scenes were a little over the top,
[00:43:35] a lot over the top,
[00:43:37] different writer,
[00:43:38] it just wasn't there.
[00:43:40] It's laughable watching it
[00:43:42] because you're just,
[00:43:44] after watching the first one
[00:43:46] and then seeing this,
[00:43:47] it's hard to believe
[00:43:49] this is actually a sequel to that movie.
[00:43:51] I mean, there's been a few times,
[00:43:56] if it didn't have the speed name,
[00:43:58] it probably wouldn't have been as bad
[00:44:00] in the first place.
[00:44:01] Like, rename her character
[00:44:04] and just make it its own movie.
[00:44:06] Then it might have been alright.
[00:44:08] But tying it to a movie
[00:44:09] that was actually pretty damn good,
[00:44:11] the way they tried to do it
[00:44:12] was just no,
[00:44:13] just not good at all.
[00:44:15] I don't know if they really ever say
[00:44:17] Donna Reeves was initially supposed
[00:44:19] to reprise the role,
[00:44:20] but decided not to commit
[00:44:21] and was replaced before Jason Patrick.
[00:44:23] Yeah, I'm guessing he read this
[00:44:24] and was like, what the fuck?
[00:44:26] Most of it was set on sound stages.
[00:44:28] It's the other thing too, right?
[00:44:30] The original speed,
[00:44:32] I told you the stunts were good,
[00:44:33] the special effects were good and all that,
[00:44:34] and part of that is because of the fact
[00:44:36] that it was filmed on roads,
[00:44:38] it was filmed at an airport,
[00:44:40] it was filmed, you know,
[00:44:41] all this stuff.
[00:44:43] This one wasn't.
[00:44:44] This was mostly sound stages,
[00:44:46] this was mostly, you know,
[00:44:48] and this was like nominated for,
[00:44:50] oh, worst sequel by the Stinker ceremony.
[00:44:53] It won that.
[00:44:54] Worst screenplay for a film
[00:44:55] grossing over 100 million, nominated.
[00:44:57] Worst director, nominated.
[00:44:59] Worst song, nominated.
[00:45:00] Worst screenplay, nominated.
[00:45:01] Worst director,
[00:45:02] worst remake of a sequel or sequel,
[00:45:04] it won that.
[00:45:05] Worst on-screen couple,
[00:45:07] Jason Patrick and Sandra Bullock,
[00:45:08] like I said.
[00:45:09] Worst supporting actor,
[00:45:10] William Defoe.
[00:45:11] Worst actor,
[00:45:12] Sandra Bullock.
[00:45:13] I mean, it got panned and it's well deserved.
[00:45:15] If you want to spend like seven hours
[00:45:17] of your time one time watching three
[00:45:20] of the most ridiculously bad sequels ever
[00:45:23] that you're just going to laugh at how bad they are,
[00:45:26] watch this,
[00:45:27] Under Siege 2 and Mortal Kombat 2 from the 90s.
[00:45:30] That's all I got to tell you.
[00:45:31] So I don't know if I was too harsh on speed 2
[00:45:36] and too not harsh on speed 1,
[00:45:39] but if that's the case,
[00:45:40] take it for what it's worth.
[00:45:41] Love speed 1, classic movie, great movie.
[00:45:46] Speed 2, well put it this way,
[00:45:48] there's number third, right?
[00:45:49] Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this
[00:45:52] and I hope this is, you know,
[00:45:54] hope you watch speed and not speed 2.
[00:45:56] And this is Johnny Petocchi from the Attack of the B-Movies podcast
[00:45:59] saying thanks for listening and goodbye.
[00:46:04] Do you recommend the infamous sequel
[00:46:08] as a double feature with Titanic?
[00:46:10] Well, to be fair, I'd rather we watched that than Titanic.
[00:46:13] Right.
[00:46:15] It's just so hysterical.
[00:46:16] Like it does not work and yet you cannot take your eyes off it.
[00:46:19] Just like a Fast and Furious movie.
[00:46:20] It's just Jason Patrick is a good actor,
[00:46:22] but he had no charisma with Sandra Bullock
[00:46:25] who had to come back for a paycheck.
[00:46:28] And William Dafoe is taking it up to 11 and it's so weird.
[00:46:32] It's like he's getting revenge on this tech company
[00:46:34] that gave him like blood cancer or something.
[00:46:38] And he uses leeches to like take out the chemicals in his body.
[00:46:42] It's so fucking weird, even for a PG-13 movie.
[00:46:46] Yeah.
[00:46:47] But I can still have fun with it, especially because of him.
[00:46:50] It's just kind of trashy fun.
[00:46:52] It's very watchable despite being very illogical.
[00:46:57] Very true.
[00:46:58] What would you like to see a third movie be like?
[00:47:01] And that's a tease.
[00:47:02] I definitely want to do an audio drama creation
[00:47:05] because they turn it down and yet you know the audience wants to see them back in there.
[00:47:09] There's some excuse to have Sandra Bullock and Keanu back.
[00:47:12] I could see maybe like a hostage situation, you know?
[00:47:16] Maybe something with that.
[00:47:18] Is this one of your favorite SWAT team movies of all time?
[00:47:21] Well, there's not too many. I can name my favorites to be honest.
[00:47:23] I mean, I remember someone doing a review of the 2003 movie SWAT
[00:47:27] and they noticed how the Colin Farrell character Jim Street felt very much similar to Jack and Speed.
[00:47:33] So there does seem to be some of that same go-get-it attitude for an action hero nowadays
[00:47:39] before it gets back to the usual hostage takeover crisis.
[00:47:44] Yeah, I could see that similarity, especially with Farrell's character at the time.
[00:47:49] Do you recommend the Blu-ray set that has both movies with the imported special features?
[00:47:55] I can't say because I've never gotten a Blu-ray set.
[00:47:58] From what reviews I've seen of it, it's looking pretty nice.
[00:48:02] Well, I might have to try and get that then at some point.
[00:48:06] But I can't promise anything.
[00:48:09] It's on and off on HBO Max.
[00:48:11] It seems pretty hard to goof up this movie.
[00:48:14] It's very well shot.
[00:48:16] I'm sure they'll try to remake it at some point.
[00:48:18] I know there's a lot to do.
[00:48:20] Oh no!
[00:48:22] I know they're going to try to, trust me.
[00:48:25] You know Hollywood, come on.
[00:48:27] Yeah, soulless Hollywood.
[00:48:29] Don't do that.
[00:48:31] Don't do that.
[00:48:33] Trust me, they're going to try to and they're going to fail as usual.
[00:48:37] So that's...
[00:48:41] Oh, I don't want to live in that hell.
[00:48:49] Speed 2 Cruise Control was directed by Jan de Vont,
[00:48:52] the same man who directed the original Speed.
[00:48:54] And once again, he shows a lot of energy and originality in his special effects.
[00:48:59] It isn't a great action movie, but it's a very competent one
[00:49:01] and it gets the job done. I liked it.
[00:49:03] I liked it too. I was a little nervous there with the way you started out.
[00:49:05] I thought you were going to knock this picture.
[00:49:07] Sandra Bullock, I think it's very smart that she's here in a more limited role.
[00:49:12] She's on the run. She's alive and sexy.
[00:49:14] And Sandra Bullock has said that she's been overexposed ever since Speed.
[00:49:17] That she said she was boring herself.
[00:49:19] She thought the...
[00:49:20] And I think that there's a conscious effort to limit her in this picture.
[00:49:24] And also, talk about Jason Patrick for a second.
[00:49:27] You say he steals the scenes, but he steals them because he's a superior actor.
[00:49:30] He was in a wonderful film called After Dark, My Sweet, about seven years ago.
[00:49:34] And he's just really good.
[00:49:35] Yeah, well, he's a good actor.
[00:49:36] He's good in a new movie coming out later this year
[00:49:38] called Love and Death on Long Island too that was a big hit at the Cannes Film Festival.
[00:49:41] But you know, she was the star, really, more than Keanu Reeves of Speed.
[00:49:46] So you make a sequel and you have the same star in the sequel.
[00:49:49] Why not let her be the star? We want to see Sandra Bullock.
[00:49:52] I mean, is it good career management to hide someone and to give them smaller roles?
[00:49:56] I think it's her sense of herself and how she's...
[00:49:59] I think that they were co-equals in the first picture.
[00:50:01] Well, I don't think she should have that.
[00:50:02] I don't like the premise that you're making co-equals.
[00:50:04] But she was the discovery. She was the discovery in the first picture.
[00:50:06] That's true.
[00:50:07] And it's not good career advice to her to say keep a low profile.
[00:50:11] We want to see her. We like her.
[00:50:12] If we don't want to see her, we won't go to her movies.
[00:50:14] But if we go to a Sandra Bullock movie, that's who we want to see.
[00:50:17] This isn't a Sandra Bullock movie.
[00:50:18] This is an action picture with two co-stars, Bullock and Jason Patrick, and all three.
[00:50:22] The ship and the two actors are very good.
[00:50:24] No, but my point is still an excellent one.
[00:50:26] Only in your head.
[00:50:50] Thanks a million for listening.
