[00:00:55] I know that some people were harping that they wanted to do another game of defend infamous movie and TV show characters. I think we're up to the challenge. I brought a list. Everybody has a fan, but in all fairness, a lot of those articles I was looking at, they just came off as clickbaity because they were just

[00:01:17] following what people had said in an IMDB review. It's like, yeah, but do you want to... Why do you not like this character? So, we're a positive show. Let's defend the underdogs. The people... Someone said they were going to talk about Parks and Rec. There was a character they wanted to defend. Well, it was... This is my fault. You all can blame this on me. When James and Cavendish were first talking about a possible subject or game for the show,

[00:01:47] I came up with defending Mark Brandanowicz from season one of Parks and Rec. See? I think that's a legit one. I think you're onto something. I think a lot of people, because they don't like that first season, they like to just... Blame it all on Mark Brandanowicz. Blame it all on Mark Brandanowicz. What character was he? He's one of the other supporting guys. Yeah. Exactly.

[00:02:12] I had some. I... Some of these... Anyone who doesn't recognize these, you know, I'll just move on to the next one. But like, um... I was thinking just long and hard. It's like, see, I think they just didn't ever like that actor. Or... Maybe they would have grown to like that character had they had another season. So... This is why I thought it was a fun side quest. And... So... My list would pull up here. I got a few.

[00:02:42] I'm sure I know Gil's got some. I wasn't ready for this. He wasn't ready! Damn it! Uh... So... I got a few who... Might give you some chuckles. Uh... Janice Soprano. From The Sopranos. I think everyone just didn't like her voice. But did you see how unlikable his kids and mother was? I... I'll take her.

[00:03:09] Plus, she knew when to get rid of her awful abusive boyfriend. I can respect anyone for that. Maybe I just like the Totoro acting family in general. I don't know. I thought she was a fine character. We got Ziggy, the drug dealer guy, played by the great James Ranzome. Who you might know from various Ethan Hawkements and D'Onofrio collaborations on The Wire. He's a drug dealer in season two who everyone shits on. And I think... He's meant to be annoying. So I don't know. He didn't annoy me.

[00:03:40] I felt like they were in on the joke. So I didn't... The mind trick didn't work on me. I think to be the most unlikable character on a show like that is really an accomplishment. Um... That's the other thing too. It's like, they're the villains you love to hate. Like Gus on Breaking Bad. There's all kinds of people. I mean, people hate on Skylar and Jessie and the same deal. Like those characters go through a transformation. Well, I think the mother in that was doing her job well because I didn't like her much.

[00:04:10] But I think that's the way it was supposed to be. That was kind of the point. I see people hate on Eric LaSalle as Peter Benton, the doctor on ER. I always just found him arrogant, but I see a lot of hate mail aimed at him. Agent Chase Edmonds on 24 gets some hate. I think he's just meant to be the rookie. And Serena Sutherland played by Elizabeth Rome on Law & Order. She's the assistant DA, blonde gal. I always saw hate mail aimed at her. I was like...

[00:04:40] I just thought she had a lot of progressive defense cases. So, I don't know. I thought that suited the character. Gil, where do you stand on Wesley Crusher on Star Trek? I didn't miss him when he was gone. Okay, well, see. For me, I felt he was reflecting the kids who were watching it. So, never jumped on that bandwagon. Never jumped on it. Maybe it's stand by me bias. Boy Soldiers bias. I don't know.

[00:05:10] No, I liked him as stand by me. So, there you go. Will Bailey on the West Wing gets some hate. But see, he was having to replace Rob Lowe's character. You know? So, that's a tough act to follow. Cam Mitchell on Stargate SG-1 is another one. But, yeah. If anyone's got any other ones, let's hear them. This is your time to defend a character who you just never got the bashing of. But we all agree we still hate Jar Jar Binks, right?

[00:05:41] Yeah. That was an easy reach. I never jumped on that bandwagon. The design was okay. It's then the editing and the character and the voice. I know. See? Fair enough. No, that's fair. For me, I was always kind of take it or leave it with them in the Ewoks. They always got so many. I tried so much attention. Right out of high school, I went to the Art Institute for Animation.

[00:06:08] And one of my professors knew the guy who designed Jar Jar Binks. Oh, nice. And he said the design was good. It's just everything else about him that was terrible. At least he owned it. He's never been a Muppet or a talk show host who no one ever understood the appeal of. We're not talking to the actors. He's talking to the characters.

[00:06:41] What about that being said? That's it, guys? No, it's fine. John, I feel like you got some opinions on this. I'm very shocked that John did not chime in on this. I have a brain power, but John, you have to have some. No, I just am thinking about Jar Jar Binks now. I don't know. Just think of anyone who you just didn't like how they were framed. They just felt like they were nagging or whiny. Not really a character.

[00:07:06] There's always that one person on that every other space opera or horror anthology where you're like, shut up. It's nothing to do with the actor. It's everything to do with the character where you don't get why they're here in the part of the plot. What about my thing was always sloth on Goonies. Everyone was just afraid of him because of how he looked. The character, the character was, it wasn't his fault how he was treated. He was a hero, right? Yeah, that's a good point.

[00:07:36] Everyone's kind of just distracted by his disfigured face. It's like, yeah, that's the character. You shouldn't be afraid of him. I always feel like every other lawyer or doctor show will have a like too many characters, if you know what I mean. Whereas like it's tough to know if they would have worked or not because there's too many. There's over 12. I can't keep track of over 12.

[00:07:55] Did you guys ever have that process when you were starting the movie production where you're like, okay, you know, can't have over 10 locations. I love that. Yeah, just kidding. Yeah. Every other production I was on, I would see so many people lose sight of who it was. And there were so many smack talkers and egos. I'm like, so whose movie is it? The third person or is there two people anchoring it?

[00:08:25] Who are you guys doing a discount version of heat or face off? What's going on here? I don't know who's who. You all say you're the star. Of course, you're going to say that, but real, who's the star? Sometimes it goes beyond the pages. Did anyone think that the villain in silence of the lambs or training day was going to overshadow the hero? No.

[00:08:52] No, well, I mean, it's sounds of the lambs is based on a book, I think, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. Thomas Harrison. Who expected? Joey Foster to have to come back at the Hopkins, you know, it's the same thing with Dark Knight. You know, Christian Bell. I would argue is not at his finest hour playing Batman in that movie, but he's overshadowed by a great villain. So it doesn't really matter. Well, that was hard in training day, too. Who would have ever thought that was the first time we saw Denzel like that? Right. So, yeah. And who was it in?

[00:09:22] Who was it in platoon? Joker. Was it Joker in platoon? I know the one. Oh, you're talking metal jacket. Yeah. Good point. Okay. Full metal jacket. That's what I was trying to think of. Yep. But yeah, platoon's not far. You got Berenger and William Defoe and all these other. Fairly Sheen. Right. And all these other great actors. No one talks enough about like, where's what occurs? It's like it.

[00:09:50] The movie constantly shifts depending on the situation of one chaotic movie. So. Yeah. And so maybe here's another side quest. What movie do you think is finally getting its due? Like it's being critically reevaluated in a positive light. I'm a Heaven's Gate fan over here, but I'd love to hear you guys' take of what movie do you think is finally getting acknowledged in a good way?

[00:10:17] Like you always liked it, but everyone else would, you know, jump on a bandwagon. And, you know, I mean, it's like, I don't know if I can. I mean, I mean, I don't know if I can. But there's a director's cut that's superior or people are just more mature to look at it with a more critical eye. I mean, Blade Runner started out as being sort of a dog of a movie. And now it's just like the best movie ever. And 2001 was completely panned by a lot of people. That's a good example. Yeah.

[00:10:47] The top movie of anybody's list. Yeah. What was that movie we just recently talked about? The Room? No, not The Room. Not The Room, not Birdemic or anything like that. Oh. We thought it was a comedy. Oh, it was a golf comedy. Caddyshack. Caddyshack. It didn't. When it opened in theaters, it didn't do well. People were laughing at it for the wrong reasons. Yeah.

[00:11:15] And we talked about High Noon. Now it's an allegory for the McCarthyism and all that. So it's just funny how what movies take on a different life of its own. I'm glad Hanson brought up Blade Runner. That actually got me into the first person detective narrating it before I watched any other neo-noir. So it is funny what stuff. I mean, you want to talk Blade Runner?

[00:11:41] Johnny Mnemonic is actually worth rewatching if you see the international Japanese version. Wow. Different movie, different cut, different takes. It's not the laughable trashy mess that people remember. But that's the other thing, too. There's so many different versions of movies now that if someone were to do a better cut of them, you'd get a better known movie. The Snyder cut of Justice League is almost watchable. Oh, there you go. Yeah. Well, at least it flowed better. Yeah.

[00:12:11] And the color correction was a lot better. There you go. Yeah. But I couldn't stop looking at Superman's lip. Yeah. Yeah. Some stuff you can't fix. Hidalgo for me. His lips are too chappy. Hmm. Hidalgo was a good movie. It's in the desert, right? What? Isn't that with Viggo Mortensen? Yes. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:12:42] That was inspiring real events and it was a fun Indiana Jones adventure. Yeah. I'll take it. I, I threw my hat at Bree one time because she said she didn't like Lawrence and Arabia. It's okay. To my defense. It's okay. My sister hates it. I love it. I get it. I was in college and I was trying to watch all the critically acclaimed oldies and I couldn't get through it without falling asleep.

[00:13:10] I fell asleep like every time I turned. And all fair. And I was just like, nothing happens in this. He's just in a desert. Like in all, in all fairness, when it's forced on you, you're less likely to watch it. Well, and I chose it. I was like, I'm going to watch this. And I, I was, I just kept falling asleep and I'd wake up and I'd be like, he's still in the desert. I hear you. I didn't like touching it. And I haven't missed anything. There's been no one else. There's been no one else. I hear you. Cam and I actually did a podcast on that. Yes, we did. Not too long ago.

[00:13:40] And that and the Blade Runner episodes. Just watch everything that's in the feed this year. You'll find it. But don't shoot me. It's, you know. I hear you. Not my cover of tea. There's a lot of stuff. I give it three times at the minimum, six times at the most. And if I can't find anything redeeming. I could try a rewatch like 25 years later. I could try. Also, there you go. I mean, I was all my free time. I didn't like two parts. That that's not bad. Skip past the intermission.

[00:14:08] I did not care for touch of evil or apocalypse. Now when I first saw, but I came around to it. I saw the bigger picture. Do I want to watch them every day? No, that's too heavy a movie, but. It's funny. What stuff. Yeah, they seemed ordinary to me the first time I watched them. And then I'm watching them later with different eyes. And I'm just like, Lord, I think that's the other thing, too. Every movie has been ripped off so many times or second nature.

[00:14:37] You're like, why does that stand out? I do this with every other. When I'm recommending a true crime podcast to someone, what do they talk about the real life horror that's different than the other guy? What did they do in this procedural or gangster saga that wasn't hammy or overblown? And what about this anthology show? Did you like without it just being the billionth Twilight Zone tells from the crook knockoff, you know, and. What can you do new with a slasher or a martial arts movie?

[00:15:06] That's not just meh. There's lots, but it's it's it's so funny when you ask the other people and they can't even explain why they found it dull. But. This is why we do the podcast. We like just getting everyone comfortable and just composite composing some kind of. Answer. I'm sure, Rachel, you have to do this all the time with the marketing is like, well, there's clearly a reason why you think that.

[00:15:36] Yep. Can you pitch me? Sometimes we find that solution right at the end. Whenever I did a part that I couldn't do, I always recommended my replacement. Like you're not blacklisting me. Here's five other people more qualified to light the scene or do this kind of acting. No, thank you. Uh, so what is catering like on these movies? We have a lot of cheese sticks. Yep. All right.

[00:16:06] And grapes and granola bars. Granola bars. See. And my mom's cookies. Yeah. I love it. Who hero is Devin's mom's cookies. Yeah. I love it. See, I was figuring out a mixture of bananas, salad bar and pizza. That's awesome. No, that's cool. I gotta get those, uh, pumpkin snickerdoodles. Pumpkin snickerdoodles. I didn't know that was a thing. Wow.

[00:16:35] That was the first ones mom made and I've heard about them for several months afterwards. It was like the second weekend of filming and, uh, you, we still haven't forgotten them. Yeah. They're engrossed. You can bet in your head. They're never leaving you. So I think Stephanie said she was going to try and make them for family Thanksgiving this weekend. So. Yes. Yeah. Pumpkin snickerdoodle cookies.

[00:17:04] With the cream cheese frosting, I think. No, that was the other ones. That was, uh, pumpkin oatmeal cookies with maple cream cheese sandwich. Maple cream cheese. Yep. Those are the ones I'm going to make. Yes. Uh, so James in that movie we saw was doing some baking stuff. Uh, have you guys ever wanted to play an on screen like kitchen staff or head chef? My kitchen, my rules.

[00:17:36] Anyway. I mean, it seems way too stressful. I did some, uh, making, I did make some actual cookie dough in a movie once. Nice. I was really hoping to eat it after the fact, but like five hours later, I was like, that's not, nope. You already went there as the character. I don't actually. I stirred potato salad in the film, in the jury prepares you. Oh, there you go. See? It was.

[00:18:04] People may want to watch the movie to see a lot of kitchen action. There is a lot of action. Let's add some music. Yeah. Have a timer in the background. They can't cook it in time. The kitchen is running on one. I know the short story had some kitchen action. You never know what, you never know what dough can do. Someone died of poisoning. It's dismissed. Or what it doesn't do.

[00:18:34] That's right. Rachel, have you ever had to do any like marketing for like restaurants or mom and pop stores? Yeah, actually we do a lot of in the hospitality industry. We kind of cut our teeth in a craft beverage market. There you go. See? So we've done a lot of restaurant design and marketing work. So yes. I love it. And then, you know, it comes full circle because as production crew, we talk about wearing a lot of hats.

[00:18:59] And I'm pretty sure everyone in production now has made a batch of potato salad or baked a loaf of bread by this point for the film. So I'm sure Amy has. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Been there, done that. We send back and forth pictures of how the how the food's looking for the next day's set with a glass of wine in hand. So I love it. So energy drinks or coffee? It's everyone's preference. Coffee. All right. That's it. I love hearing this.

[00:19:29] Coffee and tea. Yep. Tea. Nice. My ADHD medication. Hey, there you go. It's an amphetamine. I mean, it's micro dosing meth. So I love it. That sounds way better. It's a former Delta user. Ah, John, what's the best food to frame in the shot? Oh, you're doing a food commercial. What do you was it? What's it going to be for?

[00:20:00] I'm sorry. I got to ask these film questions. I got it. I mean, we've shot a lot of dough in this one. I mean, seriously. Nice. So next one you do is going to be a dough monster coming to life. You're closer than you think. But James told me not to give away anything. So, yeah, the outtakes. Never knows. That's the next thing with crowdfunding. Yeah. Roger Corman inspired.

[00:20:27] It's going to be like a knock off a little shop of horrors, but set in a, you know, in a small town bakery. Nice. It's going to start out like one of those Hallmark Christmas movies, right? Where the hotshot lawyer comes back to her small town for Christmas and falls in love with the baker. And then about. I love it. It's tone shifts into pure horror. The first shot is a glass of ice water and they drop the ice cubes in.

[00:20:55] And when they start stirring, it's blood swirling in. Is it the sourdough that you just have to keep feeding? The sourdough starter. Oh, there you go. Growing and growing. It's alive. It's evil and it's just like bubbling up and it's like, feed me, see you. Too much yeast. There you go. I love it. Food that wants you to feed. Yeah, I got a, I got a location. I, I decorated cakes for a while.

[00:21:21] So there's a small bakery I know of that we can go, we can film it at. There we go. There you go, baby. There you go. It's writing itself, honestly. So. It is. There you go. So I'm going to give you guys a roles like acting roles. You could play some might be for the behind the scenes talent and we'll see if they could see themselves in these kinds of roles. Brie police negotiator. Police negotiator. Yes.

[00:21:48] Oh, ooh, I, I could, I could do it, but. It would have to be with the right, with the right people. Okay, cool. Yeah, I could do it. I think you are a teacher. So that is basically hostage negotiations. We basically do. You don't take over the classroom. Those kindergarteners are a little feral. So I heard in a school again. Yes. Yes. Touche. So Clint, I see you as a narc.

[00:22:20] Sure. Yeah. Yeah. Admit it. Admit it. Evidence. Sorry. Um. Sayin, I see you as a counselor. Okay. Yeah. And you're getting more disturbed by your patient. You're like, I'm calling the cops. Rachel, I could also see you as a teacher. As a teacher? Yes. All right. I'll educate the youth. For marketing. Maybe I don't like it, but.

[00:22:50] In economic class. It'd be great. Do my best work. For real. Oh, Devin, you got to play a wardrobe designer. Oh. We'll do a movie within a movie. See? And John, you might not approve of this. I see you as an air traffic controller. Yeah. I think I'd probably crash a lot of planes. Like you. It would be your Hitchcock cameo. You just. He would delay that plane.

[00:23:19] Oh, breaking bad reference for those who don't get it. I love it. Um. Minus the collision. I don't want. I don't want that on your resume. That's. No. Goldfish remaining. Well. We'll do a. We'll do a parody of North by Northwest where the plane is chasing through the field and then John is sprinting across the cornfield with the little weight with the little own things. Like. I could see it. And you don't even have to show the plane. You could just like have someone beneath the sand,

[00:23:49] like throwing up sand. So it looks like debris is being fired. The whole time. Cary Grant is just mistaking the plane, chasing him from my pork directions. Where are we going? What's happening? Shake the camera. Star Trek style. Yeah. Oh, William, you, my friend. I don't know why I want to see you as a conductor on an out of control train. I could do that. I can't.

[00:24:18] Slow it down. What do you not get? And like, this is the cluster of open filler. It doesn't have to be mocking any other movie. It's like. Hours of you just breaking a sweat. I need to trust me. I'm doing. I think of a, I think a galaxy quest. Yes. Free amigos. A movie. I'm not the hero. I am. But it's a fake spaceship. Right. And it's not actually designed for hyperdrive and they go into hyperdrive

[00:24:48] anyway. And they call down to the, the engine room and it's a, it's Tony Shalhoub. And he's like, Hey guys. Yes. I know that the plane, the ship is going to fall apart. It really can't handle the pressure and we're all going to die. So I just thought you should know. Okay. Thanks. I don't know why the way you said that sounded like the Boston office space. Hmm. Okay. You can come in. That'd be nice. Yeah. We're going to need you to come in on Saturday.

[00:25:18] Uh, I'm glad you brought up that character, that character. People don't notice the character is actually like snorting something, but they cut it out to keep the PG rating to imply that he's addicted to drugs and he's a has been actor. But you also notice the character is technically Chinese. They're doing a play on of the David Carradine thing. I mean, famous for a white rush, washed roll.

[00:25:42] There's all kinds of other in movie stuff that people don't see in that movie, but it's funny when you rewatch it a few times. Amy. Sigourney Weaver has an F bomb right as they're going. Yeah. Big. Yeah. Darn. I got a great role for Amy. Great. A great role. No, you're gonna love it.

[00:26:07] You get a bad sense that your karate instructor is abusing your children and you take justice into your own hands. I can be a vigilante justice. I'll see you at the courthouse. And it's not going to be in cuffs, motherfucker. It doesn't have to even be Shaft or Deathwish inspired. It's like claustrophobic. Yeah. I don't have control of my hands. I could be pretty messy, though, yeah. I could probably do that. Prisoner Zanassin.

[00:26:37] That's what this movie is. I'll bury you. Love it. What dream roles do you guys have that you have not conquered yet, but it's on your bucket list? Rachel, I think you'd be good at some baseball advertising. That's paying really well nowadays. A little advertising? Yes. I'm not a sports guy.

[00:27:04] I do have a goal to visit as many baseball stadiums as I can. I'm only at nine right now, but it's getting... It's great. As a side place to sell... I think it'd be easier if I was doing a bunch of marketing for them. I could probably get into more. Exactly. You can work in some other local food shops and even insurance. Trust me. I know who you know. Know who you know. Shayyin, what's on your bucket list? What role must you do before you leave this planet?

[00:27:34] Everyone's got one. I really want to do a Western. Really want to do a Western. Hey, nice. Yeah. What kind of character would that be? It could be the wife of the sheriff who's like, not on my watch. It doesn't have to be cartoonish. You're just like, oh, you're going down. The underestimated... The underestimated woman. Oh, see? There you go.

[00:28:03] Now, Shayyin, if you were doing a Western sci-fi, I mean, John will write a movie around that. Yes. You have like a planetary defense on your farm. Don't mess with my crops. Assholes. Clint, I know you got a role in it. What's one you're like? I always wanted to do. No one's giving me that opportunity, but it's going to happen. I don't know.

[00:28:29] I'd love to do a role that's like the inspirational, like coach and a sports movie. There you go. I grew up abroad. You know, I was a broadcaster. I've always loved like those emotional narrations too. Like the, like the president when he's warning everyone on Armageddon. Yeah. Any president role would be great. Because you take out the politics. It's like, I'm your voice of the nation. Here's what's going on. Here's why I put my faith in you. Boom.

[00:28:57] And I can see you even being as a boxing trainer. Like, oh, sure. Fuck what the coach is saying. Here's what I'm telling you right now. You don't do this. You're dead. Don't come to me. You know, just. Bree, I know you got one. Um, always a theater girl. I would love to do a Noel Coward play. I would love to do a Noel Coward play. Noel Coward play. Okay. What is.

[00:29:27] I'm not up to. Like a blind spirit. Um, and lots of others that I can't think of right now because it's way past my bedtime. But. Yes. I saw. Um, just I've seen a lot. It's hilarious, smart, very fast. Um, dialogue. Um, yeah. So. That'd be a dream. That's great. See. Wasn't so hard. That's awesome. No, see.

[00:29:54] You guys have an idea of already what you want to do with this instead of just going for this aimlessly. I love it. I love. Uh, I, I kept you guys up past your bedtime, but it's, it really has been a delight. I, I was looking forward to this. It's like, how do I even measure up to this? I gotta, I gotta bring the questions, but I don't want to just have it be the stuff you've probably already been asked a million times in your life. So. So when is your guys' movie coming out? Yeah. Next year. It's all good.

[00:30:24] No, no specific date yet. Well, we'll, we'll split this up. We'll, we'll have a part of this in the, in the winter and another part in the summer. Cause you played the immortal game. No budget filmmaking disasters. There we go. Um, but no, I look forward to it. I, I always try to throw a bone to everybody. I went to an independent dark fantasy horror movie that was kind of a tribute to films like from beyond and other eighties supernatural films.

[00:30:53] And I was blown away. I couldn't believe they had made it bigger than it was. And I applaud anyone who's heart is in it. Cause it's hard to be creative. And when you got so many people gatekeeping saying, Oh, you don't do it this way. And they've never been successful. It's like. Duly noted. Marching on through. So to quote the doors. I hope you guys break on through to the other side. Thank you. Thanks.

[00:31:23] Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Really. I had a great way to start the year. I'm envious of you all because I have all kinds of ideas in my heads all the time, but what I lack is the drive. You don't like the drive. You like the time, but you'll get there. So congratulations to you all. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. We're excited.

[00:31:52] Everyone's paying it forward with each other. It's great. I love that. It's. Fun. All right. Well, don't let the day run you. Say hi to all the sweet potatoes in your life and not just the ones on the plate. And roll tide. Roll tide. Look forward to this. Seriously. I, I hope you have a fun festival turnout and I hope they have some kind of red carpet for you to watch.

[00:32:23] That's what I love about it, too. That's it's not just cons that's doing it now. Like some people will go to the trouble of putting out a red carpet. Yeah, we can make that work. Yeah, we'll have a we're aiming for some, you know, advanced screenings. The screenings next, you know, probably late spring mid late spring and then hit the festival circuit next summer. Love it. Devin, you win the cat contest. I'm sorry that.

[00:32:54] The defense has entered this into evidence last minute. I think she wins the trial. That's great. Oh, yeah. I'll unmute you. She's purring up a storm. Oh, barely here. Her machine. No, really, this was a delight. We'll coordinate with stuff and James probably in the future also.

[00:33:21] But hey, glad to see the nuts and bolts of this operation. And I can't take you enough for two hours in time. And again, I better let you guys get to bed. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Delighted to know you guys. Hey, anything you want to share, please. Keep sharing. I'll reach out. Anyone's on social media. I'll reach out. Cool. Thank you. Thank you. Have a good night. We'll return after these messages.
