[00:00:06] [SPEAKER_03]: It's a JackedUp Review Show The JackedUp Review Show
[00:00:13] [SPEAKER_03]: JackedUp Review Show
[00:00:21] [SPEAKER_03]: It's a JackedUp Review Show The JackedUp Review Show
[00:00:32] [SPEAKER_06]: Welcome into the show we're doing another just independent dive
[00:00:48] [SPEAKER_06]: And we decided to go after a dark fantasy horror writer himself Bill Hatfield
[00:00:54] [SPEAKER_06]: He's got his own book, he's coordinated with Star of the movie Monos The Hands of Fate
[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_06]: Welcome
[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you for having me
[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Anytime
[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_06]: So I take it your big Mr. Science Theatre, Dragon Theatre kind of movie guy
[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah
[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_04]: It's kind of fun to show my age. I didn't grow up with the show
[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_04]: I actually discovered it through Cracked.com
[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Jack and John Zoothe, the original movie
[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_04]: She did an article on there. It was called something like five things that I learned
[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_04]: as the star of the verse movie, Remade
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_04]: And that was how I discovered not only mouse fans of Fate but also MSD3K
[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, I've definitely gone down that rabbit hole in the years since
[00:01:47] [SPEAKER_06]: Man, so that's quite a dive of all the gutter
[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_06]: Is there how would you describe it's kind of meta humor before that was such a thing
[00:01:59] [SPEAKER_06]: That's kind of common place on gaming forums and the internet
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_04]: What I describe
[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Just the meta humor as
[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_06]: Of Mr. Science Theatre
[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Mocking humor, spoofing humor
[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Rift tracks these
[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_04]: They're not necessarily making fun of these movies
[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_04]: And a lot of cases they're really bringing out of the background into the forefront
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_04]: And giving them an audience that they wouldn't have had otherwise
[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_04]: There's that one. There are certainly some moments that
[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_04]: That are lampooned
[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, they sometimes point out you know good things about it
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_06]: But yeah, this kind of humor just
[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_06]: Fascinate to because it's like you say
[00:02:45] [SPEAKER_06]: They're giving them a giant audience
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_06]: They otherwise wouldn't have other than like
[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_06]: Retro video stores and driving theaters at that time
[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_04]: That's right, especially in the case of Mano stands a fate
[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Because before it was on MST, you know, it was really this obscure unknown
[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_04]: About movie that it really didn't have an audience outside its premier
[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_04]: And Jackie Neiman Jones described it in the book she wrote about it as her home movie
[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_04]: And then of course it was featured on MST and
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_04]: It gained a cult following
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And it really is I think it's the most
[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_04]: It's had the most like sequels and other related media out of all the movies
[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Wrift on that show. Absolutely
[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_06]: I just got the remastered blue ray and yeah, I've seen the sequels
[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_06]: We did a mono special
[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_06]: There's just because like you say, I think
[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_06]: This is a movie that unlike some of the other infamous ones
[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_06]: People are fascinated by the concept and everything
[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_06]: And the incompetent parts are actually add to the kind of the cult of pill
[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_06]: It's like, hey, they had a vision. I just didn't know how to execute it
[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_06]: But still
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Right, and I don't think that Mano says the worst movie of all time
[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, there are fields of movies way worse than that
[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, there are several featured on MST that have just an incomprehensible plot
[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_04]: You just cannot understand where it's going
[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Whereas Mano's it has a plot. It doesn't only stick to it
[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_04]: But it has a plot and it has an idea of where it's going
[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Is that right? Yeah, you is the audience
[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_04]: One thing that keeps invested is that you
[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Use the audience have no idea where it's going
[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Anyone will let you know
[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, absolutely
[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_06]: It says a lot compared to various other movies that
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_06]: You had just whiny, unlikable protagonists, gross
[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_06]: Or just very unconvincing special effects
[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_06]: Or just like you say, it's just plots that are just head scratchers
[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_06]: To where you keep losing interest
[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_06]: He's time to try to focus and
[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_06]: For all the other movies that have
[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_06]: Just like, feel like five different movies pack together
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Or have unconvincing stock footage
[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, as like this is not one that we can put into any of those categories
[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Right, I'm a firm believer that if Mano's had been made ten years later by David Lanch
[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_04]: It would have been regarded as a surreal masterpiece
[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_06]: That's true. Yeah, it is funny how people like to jump on Van Wagons
[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, if we'll see all these other movies that are pissing people off and
[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_06]: Dividing audiences but then
[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_06]: But you'll see so many other people are like
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, but if Jordan Pillar Chris for no one do it, it's okay
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Right, and I don't use the term Lanchian lightly, but you look at the movie
[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's got the same awkward pauses
[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_04]: And just uncaracteristic actions
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_04]: And like I said, you never know where the script is headed
[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_04]: It really does feel Lanchian and aspects
[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, that is a good point too
[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Because
[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it's just who knows. He could have easily been watching all kinds of just bizarre
[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_06]: 70s terror movies, what are its trilogy and terror or just an infamous Twilight Zone episode
[00:06:17] It's just
[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_06]: It's always fascinating to see just people try not just something different
[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_06]: But
[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_06]: But also just
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_06]: And just being ambitious
[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Right
[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_04]: And how Warren wasn't nothing if not ambitious
[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, how could I call this not ambitious?
[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, is you know it won something from beginning to end
[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, something
[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_04]: We'll return after these messages
[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_01]: If you like small town mystery, crazy news and wild history

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_06]: We're filled
[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_06]: Like just
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_06]: And he just there's plenty of people who are monos fan but they just haven't showed their face yet
[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_04]: That's a good question because while I was writing the book
[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_04]: I got my fiance to watch the movie and she watched it for the first time unripped with no jokes or commentary over it
[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_04]: And it kept her attention throughout the whole thing
[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, she did not regard it as a cinematic masterpiece
[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_04]: But she
[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_04]: You know watched it which I would say is an impressive feat on its own
[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_04]: So you know what?
[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_04]: I feel like
[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I feel like
[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_04]: You know it's something that is curious and out there enough for anybody really to get into
[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_04]: And at least dip their toe in
[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_04]: And you know, I feel like that's kind of a good starting point
[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_04]: If you want to check out of these so-called so bad their good movies man else is a pretty good one to start with
[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, absolutely because the wacky elevator music
[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_06]: The various you know do it yourself locations and all other sorts of stuff is definitely some of the plot
[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I have the soundtrack on vinyl
[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh, look at your go
[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_07]: There you go
[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_06]: And
[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_06]: So you noted how he had some other stuff in progress
[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_06]: But what gave you the courage to just write a book of any sort of whether it was fan fiction or original concept and do you have any original fiction coming out?
[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_06]: So well, good question
[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_04]: That's fine
[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_04]: I've always you know I've always been a lover of literature and writing an English
[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_04]: I was always much more comfortable in English and math
[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_04]: And
[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Funny thing is when I was a kid
[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_04]: I was a scaredy cat. I was scared of everything. I hated horror and I had an older sister that loved horror movies
[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_04]: So she would put them in the BCR and just absolutely terrified me with them
[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_04]: But you know now that we're both adults the roles are reversed where I'm the horror fan and she's the scaredy cat
[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_06]: I was kind of on that same boat
[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_06]: I didn't really watch anything unless it was someone kind of mainstream like wishmaster or grimmlins or even temple aduum
[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_06]: And then it got to where he's like, okay, well now that there's finally some people who have a voice and actually know how to
[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_06]: Make a cool kind of sub genre movie
[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_06]: You know I'll give it a chance
[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_06]: And just as long as it's not just
[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Being on pleasure for the sake of unpleasant
[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_06]: You know
[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Right, but like I said
[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_04]: I always loved writing
[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_04]: It was something you know, I would just do in my spare time a hardly ever showed anybody and
[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_04]: The the genesis of the idea of
[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Novelizing manos and reimagining it as a straight horror story
[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Believe it or not. It actually kind of came to me
[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_04]: When I went to go see once upon a time in Hollywood in the theater
[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_04]: It was the scene where Brad Pitt's character goes to spawn ranch and things get real tense and spooky for a few minutes there
[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And image just popped into my head of what if Torggo walked out of the trailer
[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, there you go. Give every all these guys all these demonic minions just something extra to do
[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Right, and then of course 2020 happened and all that came with it
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_04]: And I was sitting at home with not a whole lot to do
[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_04]: And I really just started writing you know up to that point, you know, I'd written some short stories and stuff
[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_04]: But I had never sat down and written a full fledg novel
[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_04]: And I just had this kernel of an idea in my head and I decided to just go for it and
[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_04]: I did and
[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, it was amazing along the way
[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_04]: I was able to connect with Jacky name and Jones and she was very kind and providing the forward
[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And I released the book completely independently and it managed to get number one on Amazon's horror list
[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm pretty proud of that achievement
[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_06]: That is awesome and we already like honored social media with you
[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes, okay, stellar
[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_06]: All together, I mean
[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_06]: And what do you think?
[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Just this idea, one to do justice for this Colt movie just spring onto your head
[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, likely talked about earlier, man-housed
[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Despite being a very poorly executed movie
[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_04]: It does have a semblance of a plot and that plot is actually very interesting
[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_04]: It's this couple or this family getting lost in the rural part of Texas
[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_04]: And you know, stemming upon this wild Colt and you know by itself
[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_04]: That's a really good idea for a horror story
[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_04]: And that was kind of my goal is to just make it a straight horror story
[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm not going to spoil the ending for anybody who hasn't read the book
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_04]: But my book features a very different ending than the one in the movie
[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_04]: And the ending was actually something that I had planned in the beginning
[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Because it was what I kind of wanted to work towards
[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Because I felt that it really made a better sentence about thing
[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Not necessarily better but for what I was going for
[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_04]: It made more sense than the ending that the movie has
[00:14:14] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, that's good. You might as well do a director's cut
[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_06]: If no one else is going to do that anytime soon
[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_06]: That's very cool. So all together
[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Why do you think you just got the courage and general
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_06]: Did you just write? Have you always kind of been tempted to write or did this come just later in life?
[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, I've definitely always been tempted by me
[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Ever since kindergarten
[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_04]: I was a writer
[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_04]: There's actually a newspaper clicking
[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_04]: I've got somewhere in here
[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Me as a kindergarten or with a little
[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Three-page story that arose that they put in the newspaper for what it had been recent
[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_04]: And so that was always a part of me
[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think one thing that
[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_04]: As I grew older
[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Drew me more to
[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Core and thriller
[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Was the idea of
[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Taking the audience on
[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Older Coaster Ride
[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_04]: You know giving them twists and turns
[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_04]: And
[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Not letting them be able to guess where the story is headed next
[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_04]: And
[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Right, and
[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_04]: I always the thing as I was growing up
[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_04]: And lead more into
[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Core and mysteries
[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_04]: The idea of taking the audience on sort of a roller coaster ride with twist and turns
[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_04]: And not able to guess where it was going to go
[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And
[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Especially because I mostly grew up with my grandparents and they
[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_04]: To key the TV on the old East channel
[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_04]: And on the weekends they would show a cover of hitch cop presents
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_04]: And Twilight Zone and Night Gallery
[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_04]: And I absolutely
[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Adored
[00:15:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Especially the ones with the twist and things one of the first
[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_04]: I think the first Twilight Zone that ever watched was
[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_04]: The one where the old lady finds the miniature aliens in her house and has to fight them off
[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_04]: And I was just amazed at how they were able to tell such a complete story
[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_04]: With no dialogue
[00:16:23] [SPEAKER_06]: So what do you have coming up that you would like to promote
[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Well currently I'm working on a book of short stories
[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_04]: I wanted to have it out this summer
[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_04]: But in between having a day job and getting married in six weeks
[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_04]: I've been kind of busy
[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's not going to want
[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Right thank you
[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_04]: It's not going to long quite as quickly as I wanted to
[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_04]: But I'm working very hard boards finishing it
[00:16:49] [SPEAKER_04]: And hopefully have it out soon though
[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Don't have a release date just yet
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_04]: It's short stories
[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_04]: You know kind of a try to explore different horror sub genres
[00:17:00] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like there's a classic on the house
[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_06]: There's weird wolves
[00:17:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Much like anthology
[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Exactly I do love anthologies
[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_04]: And exactly
[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And there's one story where
[00:17:13] [SPEAKER_04]: There is a killer at a campground
[00:17:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Who is legally distinct from Jason Voorhees
[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_04]: And I thought it would be fun to explore him going through a midlife crisis
[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_04]: And wonder if killing is still worth it
[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Nice
[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_06]: All together
[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_06]: We'll get you up in the morning
[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_06]: And what advice would you have for anyone else who wants to do
[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_06]: Their own do it yourself
[00:17:38] [SPEAKER_06]: Self-publishing books
[00:17:39] [SPEAKER_06]: What tools do they use?
[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_04]: What gets me up in the morning is espresso
[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_04]: As far as
[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_04]: As far as what advice I would give
[00:17:50] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean look at man else the hands of fate
[00:17:53] [SPEAKER_04]: It was a completely
[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Independent production made by a bunch of local
[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Theater actors who had never acted in a film
[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_04]: It was made by this guy who had no idea how to make a movie
[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_04]: But he said you know what?
[00:18:09] [SPEAKER_04]: I want to so we're going to go out and do it anyway
[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_04]: And the results you can argue
[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Have far out seat as far exceeded even the director's expectations
[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Although may not in the way that he had hoped
[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_04]: And honestly it was kind of the same for me
[00:18:28] [SPEAKER_04]: You know I just decided one day you know what
[00:18:31] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't care if I don't have any big contacts
[00:18:34] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't care if I'm not a big name
[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm just going to write this book and put it out there
[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And I put it out completely independently
[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_04]: And it sold and it went to number one
[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_04]: So you know, you never know
[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_04]: How something is going to go until you do it
[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_04]: You know sometimes even if it's something that you're afraid
[00:18:54] [SPEAKER_04]: That you're going to fail at you never know if you're going to fail until you try
[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_06]: There you go
[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Just love it
[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Anything else you're doing your free time outside of writing and day job?
[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, I mean I'm trying to read a lot more than I used to
[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm actually really well actually I'm listening

[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Where each chapter he assigns a different song teach years really interesting
[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And you know I tried to you know go way outside
[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_04]: You know the genre I write in and read from all different venues
[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_04]: And I try to watch you know as many different movies good and bad
[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_04]: You know
[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Life is short and I want to have as much

[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a B-hat field author

[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Sir any music you'd like to promote
[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_04]: None of mine that I would like to promote
[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_04]: I kind of quit doing music a few years ago
[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_04]: It's still something I love though
[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_04]: You know when I did play
[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_04]: I was kind of a blues and folk guy
[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_04]: I loved the old timey blues and folk
[00:21:05] [SPEAKER_04]: The Robert Johnston
[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_04]: The you know blind Willie Johnson
[00:21:09] [SPEAKER_04]: You know all of those old as in fact
[00:21:11] [SPEAKER_04]: One of the stories in my short story collection
[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_04]: It's actually about a blues man who sells the soldier to the devil
[00:21:19] [SPEAKER_04]: So even when I'm not playing music it always manages to creep its way into whatever I'm doing
