Welcome back ragers to the best movie review podcast on the planet. The rage rolls on from the Film Rage Studio.
This week the Film Rage Crew watched the musical extravaganza known as Wicked. What did they think? You may be surprised or you may not be. Next they caught a couple films at the CUFF Docs Festival. They took in DEVO which chronicles the band from the very beginning right through to the present and then they saw Chain Reactions which is a deep dive into the influence The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has had on film makers fans and pop culture in general. Then finally both Jim and Bryce were dared to watch Gus Van Sant's Psycho.

[00:00:04] It's time to feel the rage! Welcome to Film Rage where we talk movies, in theaters, streaming and classic films as well. Directors and actors beware as you cannot hide from the rage. My name is Bryce and I'm part of the Film Rage crew which also includes Jim. Hey Jim.
[00:00:27] Oh hey hey hey Bryce! He was a beamin' in a bottle. I was busy doing stuff remember? It's not important what I do so I don't know. Hey hey.
[00:00:34] Yeah, obviously it isn't. And the Merman who's wearing number 9 from the Detroit Lions. Are we throwing back Stafford?
[00:00:45] 9, 9, 9, 9! It's a throwback because tomorrow is football. Football you bet!
[00:00:50] So did the Lions make the right move? Trading Stafford to... I don't know, hard to tell. One has a Super Bowl, one other one doesn't so I don't know yet.
[00:00:59] There you go. But one's got a lot more years left than what you say.
[00:01:02] The guy they have now isn't as bad as I thought he would be.
[00:01:05] What's the age difference between those two?
[00:01:07] I don't know.
[00:01:08] It's gotta be like 5, 6 years at least.
[00:01:10] Can I just ask one thing that our listeners are probably asking?
[00:01:12] What movies are these assholes in?
[00:01:15] Uh...
[00:01:15] I'm sure they're in something.
[00:01:16] They're not in anything.
[00:01:17] I don't think they're in anything.
[00:01:19] I'm sure they are.
[00:01:19] They're in some commercials.
[00:01:20] There you go.
[00:01:21] That's not a movie.
[00:01:22] Stafford's got a sleep number, you know.
[00:01:24] FYI, exactly.
[00:01:25] That's not a movie.
[00:01:26] They're a member of SAG, that's all I know.
[00:01:28] There you go.
[00:01:29] I doubt that very high.
[00:01:30] I think they are.
[00:01:31] So with the introductions out of the way...
[00:01:35] Let's Rage On.

[00:02:05] Play it anywhere in the cinema in the world.
[00:02:11] Now, let's get to raging.
[00:02:13] But first, Happy Thanksgiving all yo's in the States.
[00:02:16] Gobble, gobble.
[00:02:17] Gobble, gobble.
[00:02:22] The amazing man predict...
[00:02:24] The amazing man predict...
[00:02:26] When they predict the rage or what he predict the mumbo...
[00:02:30] When they tell us all what Jim and Bryce saw at the movies...
[00:02:34] Here he comes now, cause he's come swimming too.
[00:02:42] Swim, Murray, swim, Murray...
[00:02:44] Swim, Murray, swim.
[00:02:46] Swim, Murray, swim.
[00:02:48] Swim, Murray, swim.
[00:02:50] Swim, Murray, swim.
[00:02:50] Swim all the way to our hearts, our little Thanksgiving hearts.
[00:02:54] Yankee Thanksgiving hearts.
[00:02:57] Well, apparently it was a very slow week.
[00:03:00] Yeah!
[00:03:00] There were two movies that came out, but you guys had a sneak peek of the other ones.
[00:03:04] That's right.
[00:03:04] We're not going to talk about that one.
[00:03:05] We talked about that two weeks ago.
[00:03:07] We already talked about that piece of two.
[00:03:09] So the other one, which of course you know was a little old musical.
[00:03:13] That's right!
[00:03:14] Based on a Broadway play.
[00:03:15] Yeah, that's right.
[00:03:16] Based on a book.
[00:03:17] That's right.
[00:03:18] Called Wicked.
[00:03:19] Part...
[00:03:19] Vicked.
[00:03:20] Uno.
[00:03:21] It was only part one.
[00:03:22] What?
[00:03:23] Chase, you're not sure.
[00:03:24] That was quite the shock to be honest.
[00:03:26] That was a surprise to you?
[00:03:27] That wasn't a surprise to you?
[00:03:28] It sure was.
[00:03:29] It was to me too.
[00:03:31] It's a six hour movie.
[00:03:33] How the hell can there be a part two?
[00:03:34] But if the thing starts it says Wicked part one.
[00:03:37] And I'm like what?
[00:03:37] Yeah, and FYI the entire musical is only two and a half hours.
[00:03:41] If you go to it in the theater it's only two and a half hours.
[00:03:43] Yeah, that's the word on the street.
[00:03:44] But anyway.
[00:03:45] Uh, yeah.
[00:03:46] So, um, this is kind of a tough call cause Jim really doesn't like musicals.
[00:03:52] I don't.
[00:03:53] Except when I'm in the stage.
[00:03:54] He's familiar with the songs.
[00:03:57] Yes.
[00:03:57] I don't know if he was singing along cause you're not allowed to do that in the States apparently.
[00:04:00] I did, but that's okay.
[00:04:02] Um, but as him and I discussed after we saw it, yeah, there were some issues with, with,
[00:04:08] with, with the, uh, the pacing and just, it was way too long.
[00:04:12] Hmm.
[00:04:12] So I, maybe he gave it a meh.
[00:04:14] Maybe.
[00:04:15] I don't think he raged about it, but you never know.
[00:04:17] Hmm.
[00:04:17] And Bryce?
[00:04:18] I don't know.
[00:04:19] He doesn't seem to be a very jolly person.
[00:04:21] I can't see him going to a lot of musicals.
[00:04:22] He's very hate filled.
[00:04:24] He is.
[00:04:24] He is.
[00:04:25] He is.
[00:04:27] Uh, I think he probably had the same problem with it as we did, but I, I don't think he
[00:04:32] raged.
[00:04:33] So let's go double man.
[00:04:34] All right.
[00:04:36] All right.
[00:04:36] All right.
[00:04:36] Then that's all I have.
[00:04:37] Cause I didn't go to the cuff thing.
[00:04:40] Yeah.
[00:04:40] So we did, we do have a couple of movies to talk about, but, uh, did you want me to bat
[00:04:46] this out there?
[00:04:47] Little captain.
[00:04:49] You talking to me?
[00:04:50] Yeah.
[00:04:50] You're the little captain or what?
[00:04:52] He's the little admiral.
[00:04:53] What are we doing?
[00:04:54] Admiral.
[00:04:54] Oh, we're doing the, we're going to talk about a movie now that was in cinema.
[00:04:58] Yeah.
[00:04:58] So we're talking about the movie that was in cinema.
[00:05:00] Yeah.
[00:05:00] Wow.
[00:05:00] There was two, but we already did the big one.
[00:05:02] Yeah.
[00:05:04] Uh, yeah, no, you, you go for it.
[00:05:06] All right.
[00:05:06] Well, I don't even remember it really.
[00:05:08] Okay.
[00:05:10] There was like a green person in it.
[00:05:12] There is a green person.
[00:05:14] And there was some, there was some munchkins that weren't munchkins.
[00:05:17] There were no munchkins.
[00:05:18] So trust me when I say that will come up in what I'm about to say.
[00:05:22] Just FYI.
[00:05:24] So.
[00:05:25] Go to it.
[00:05:26] Wicked.
[00:05:27] Now imagine everybody, if you could just close your eyes for a moment here and close
[00:05:31] your eyes and imagine you hear wicked live on screen in cinemas.
[00:05:39] Right?
[00:05:40] Sure.
[00:05:40] Wouldn't that have been great.
[00:05:42] I mean, the Broadway play, but exactly the Broadway musical.
[00:05:46] They should have done.
[00:05:49] You know what though?
[00:05:50] Hmm.
[00:05:51] It just wasn't Holly weird enough.
[00:05:52] So this is not wicked.
[00:05:55] Wicked the musical.
[00:05:56] In fact, I don't know what this was except maybe Hollywood's twisted version of taking
[00:06:03] a great musical, which has been around for 20 years and Disney fine.
[00:06:07] And using Harry Potter isms and injecting nonsense and additions to a fantasy musical film.
[00:06:15] Yes.
[00:06:16] I realize that sounds like a little bit of an oxymoron to begin with, but all the great things
[00:06:24] about the stage presentation, which also includes as Murray's already alluded to the pace of
[00:06:31] the musical and how that felt natural and made sense in the existing lore of the original
[00:06:39] Wizard of Oz is all thrown out the window where we now have a story.
[00:06:44] I just couldn't buy in cinema.
[00:06:48] I mean, the Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite films of all times.
[00:06:52] It's in my top 10 and wicked instantly became one of my favorite stage musicals upon seeing
[00:06:58] it years ago.
[00:06:59] I tried to just watch this with new eyes, but they added or Hollywood eyes did so much.
[00:07:05] They twisted this story in small ways that made me question the validity of what I was seeing
[00:07:11] and added things that added no value from the original musical.
[00:07:17] Like most Hollywood versions of theater projects, they take a great musical and add way too much
[00:07:24] dialogue and way too much filler we didn't need, which in my opinion is only to try and make
[00:07:32] more money by making two movies out of one.
[00:07:38] Look, I cannot remember all of what happened in the musical from when we originally saw this.
[00:07:43] Although as I was kind of watching this, I kept thinking to myself and actually Murray and I were discussing
[00:07:50] was this in the musical?
[00:07:51] What about this? Was this also in the musical?
[00:07:53] I can't remember.
[00:07:54] It's not so long ago.
[00:07:56] Yeah.
[00:07:56] The theater.
[00:07:57] But what I do remember is that when I came out of the musical originally when I saw it,
[00:08:01] I thought this is the greatest musical I've ever seen, mostly because of my love of The
[00:08:07] Wizard of Oz.
[00:08:08] But also it was fast and it was exciting and it was dynamic on stage.
[00:08:15] But in watching this as the film progresses, it was way too long that we had for the songs
[00:08:23] and all the stuff they kind of added didn't really make sense.
[00:08:27] I almost had the feeling that as we're watching it, you know, they said, you know what's missing
[00:08:33] in here?
[00:08:33] We need to put a shit ton of dialogue in between these songs because this was really not a musical.
[00:08:40] To me, it was like we're watching, I guess, maybe a stage play and every once in a while
[00:08:46] they throw in a song.
[00:08:48] It seemed like a Disney type movie.
[00:08:49] There was wall to wall songs.
[00:08:50] What are you talking about?
[00:08:51] No, it wasn't wall to wall songs.
[00:08:52] They talked in it?
[00:08:53] There was mostly talking in this.
[00:08:56] Is that the parts where you were nodding off?
[00:08:59] No, I stayed awake through the whole thing.
[00:09:01] No, this had way too much dialogue.
[00:09:03] In the musical, the music is fast and furious and there's a significant amount, or should I
[00:09:09] say, a significant lack of dialogue because the songs tell the story.
[00:09:15] Yeah, no, the conversations in between the songs were only to further to get to the next song.
[00:09:20] That's right.
[00:09:21] This felt different than the musical too because the music felt like the music was made for adults
[00:09:27] in the actual musical Broadway production.
[00:09:31] And for some reason, this felt more like this was made for teenagers.
[00:09:35] It's Disney-fied, yeah.
[00:09:36] Right.
[00:09:36] It was totally felt Disney-fied.
[00:09:38] A lot of it was casting too.
[00:09:39] Totally.
[00:09:40] Yeah.
[00:09:40] And I don't even know how to explain that other than it really did feel like this movie
[00:09:45] was not for me.
[00:09:47] The stage performance of this was definitely for me.
[00:09:51] And then don't get me started on why the fuck Munchkinland was not a land made up of little
[00:09:57] people.
[00:09:58] Yeah.
[00:09:58] I mean, you want to diversify.
[00:10:00] This was a moment to have a cast of talented little people, actors in a film and make up
[00:10:06] for the sins of the original film.
[00:10:08] And if you know what I'm talking about, you should go look that up because there was
[00:10:11] a lot of sins that happened to the actual people, the little people that played in Munchkinland.
[00:10:16] Yeah.
[00:10:17] Now, I know the musical of this, it obviously, it also didn't make...
[00:10:22] Yeah, they didn't really talk about it.
[00:10:24] It was still also Munchkinland was not with little people.
[00:10:27] A thing.
[00:10:28] And a musical, it's...
[00:10:29] You know what?
[00:10:29] I'm not necessarily talking about the musical.
[00:10:31] I know I'm comparing it to it.
[00:10:32] You make everything else in this super woke and at times annoyingly woke.
[00:10:38] So...
[00:10:38] But then you can't cast Munchkinland as a place where these are actual little people in
[00:10:44] it.
[00:10:46] I don't think that Jackson did it right either, but at least...
[00:10:48] What would hobbits be like in Lord of the Rings if they were regular height?
[00:10:53] I mean, that's all part of the story.
[00:10:54] The fucking town is called Munchkinland.
[00:10:57] Well, I mean, the actors were regular height, but yeah, they...
[00:10:57] Yeah, they shrunk them down.
[00:10:58] They shrunk them down.
[00:10:59] That's the part I'm talking about.
[00:11:00] Peter Jackson could have done something better and he could have actually got little
[00:11:03] people to play their roles.
[00:11:05] Well, even in...
[00:11:05] There's a ton of little people actors around the world.
[00:11:07] Even in Snow White and the Huntsman, they had a few dwarves, but they weren't actual
[00:11:10] dwarves.
[00:11:11] They were just regular people that they shortened them through CGI or whatever.
[00:11:15] What?
[00:11:16] What did I do?
[00:11:17] Nothing.
[00:11:17] Just...
[00:11:18] I'm pointing towards Bryce for his eyes.
[00:11:20] Oh.
[00:11:21] All right.
[00:11:22] I don't know.
[00:11:23] He's distracting me.
[00:11:23] In the musical, I felt there was magic, but in this film, I didn't feel that it was
[00:11:30] even a world where magic existed, like the original.
[00:11:33] Yeah.
[00:11:33] Or is it just our heroine that has magic?
[00:11:37] They're kind of changing the way the story feels.
[00:11:39] Because I really didn't feel that Michelle Yeoh's character had any powers.
[00:11:42] No.
[00:11:43] I mean, she kind of shows some kind of powers, but it didn't really feel like magic.
[00:11:48] Yeah, she didn't.
[00:11:48] Yeah, I know, but...
[00:11:49] There was one scene where it was like, there was lightning and stuff in the air, and she
[00:11:55] was like, oh yeah, I'll take care of this.
[00:11:57] But did she really?
[00:11:59] Yeah, exactly.
[00:11:59] They don't show her...
[00:12:00] There's no magic involved.
[00:12:01] So they don't show her with actually any powers.
[00:12:03] Which, again, changes the feel of the musical.
[00:12:07] I don't remember the original character from the musical.
[00:12:08] Now, all that being said, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande did an amazing job of both acting
[00:12:14] and singing.
[00:12:15] But for the most of this, I felt really nothing emotionally connecting me to these characters.
[00:12:20] Not like the musical, where I did instantly.
[00:12:23] I did, however, well up a little bit in the last 10 minutes of this film.
[00:12:27] Yes.
[00:12:27] But not a full out cry, like I did in the musical originally.
[00:12:32] Yeah.
[00:12:34] So, my rage is taking over.
[00:12:39] No, really?
[00:12:41] Oh, sorry, where was I?
[00:12:42] Oh, yeah.
[00:12:43] Things I liked.
[00:12:44] The set design is incredible in this.
[00:12:46] It gives you a whole updated image of what Oz is now in 1999.
[00:12:52] What's that?
[00:12:53] In 2024.
[00:12:53] And the detail made in actual set pieces and costume set design was breathtaking.
[00:12:58] Yeah, that was amazing.
[00:12:59] But to change both the musical and the original lore and inject a whole bunch of Hollywood
[00:13:04] nonsense and unnecessary dialogue.
[00:13:06] And then on top of that, make two films that apparently both are going to be about 2 hours
[00:13:11] and 40 minutes out of a stage play that was 2 hours and 45 minutes, including a 15 minute
[00:13:17] admission.
[00:13:18] Halfway in.
[00:13:19] Intermission.
[00:13:19] Thank you.
[00:13:19] That's the word I'm looking for.
[00:13:21] I just cannot get behind this project at all.
[00:13:24] It was way too bloated.
[00:13:25] And if you ask me, just take the original musical.
[00:13:28] Keep it tight and fresh with the music compacted into a tight 2 hour and 45 minute film.
[00:13:34] And heck, or you know what?
[00:13:36] Heck even.
[00:13:38] Make two movies that are an hour and a half long.
[00:13:41] Each.
[00:13:41] For the amount of extra in this that didn't need to be there.
[00:13:45] Plus for making a movie out of my favorite musical that in my opinion does not capture
[00:13:51] the feel of the original movie or the musical.
[00:13:54] This makes this a rage.
[00:13:55] I could not get past the fact that they made me sit through 2 hours and 40 minutes.
[00:14:02] And from now on, if you're going to put 2 hours and 40 minutes of a movie, put a fucking
[00:14:06] intermission in it.
[00:14:07] That's all I want to say.
[00:14:08] They should do that anyway.
[00:14:10] Anything over 2 hours, they should have a 15 minute intermission.
[00:14:13] You know, little popcorn guys dancing.
[00:14:14] Exactly.
[00:14:15] That's what they should do from now on.
[00:14:17] Let's all go to the lobby.
[00:14:17] Exactly.
[00:14:18] Let's all go to the lobby.
[00:14:18] Just stop the film halfway through.
[00:14:20] Have the intermission.
[00:14:21] People can go out and pee and come back, then finish the movie.
[00:14:24] I'm really happy if they ever did that.
[00:14:26] Awesome.
[00:14:28] All right.
[00:14:29] Who's up?
[00:14:29] I don't know.
[00:14:30] He looks...
[00:14:31] It's you, Bryce.
[00:14:32] He looks shell-shocked right now.
[00:14:34] Wake up.
[00:14:34] Wake up.
[00:14:35] He wants to talk.
[00:14:35] He's got lots to say.
[00:14:36] What do you guys say about this, Merman?
[00:14:38] Want me to talk?
[00:14:39] Okay.
[00:14:41] Yeah.
[00:14:42] Last weekend was crap because we had like a foot and a half of snow.
[00:14:45] I couldn't even get out of my own driveway.
[00:14:47] No.
[00:14:47] And then Jim was nice enough to come and get me and take me to see this.
[00:14:52] I thought, well, okay, well, I'm not in a good mood anyway, but I thought, well, maybe
[00:14:55] this will lift me up.
[00:14:56] And you know the rules, Merman.
[00:14:57] I did enjoy the musical.
[00:14:59] No ass.
[00:15:00] No grass.
[00:15:01] Yeah.
[00:15:01] Well, we won't talk about that in public.
[00:15:06] Yeah.
[00:15:07] Again, I saw the musical when it was here.
[00:15:09] Took a friend from out of town who was here visiting and we really enjoyed it.
[00:15:14] And I had misgivings about Miss Ariana Grande because as much as I'm sure her music is great.
[00:15:21] I mean, she has some songs I recognize and she was a coach in the voice.
[00:15:25] I don't know what, I don't know who you're talking about.
[00:15:27] What's an Ariana Grande?
[00:15:28] Well, look at the credits of Wicked.
[00:15:30] She's the tiny one.
[00:15:30] Oh, she was Glinda.
[00:15:32] Yeah.
[00:15:33] That's right.
[00:15:33] Anyway, she's a pop star.
[00:15:36] That's who that was.
[00:15:37] She's fans.
[00:15:37] She has millions and millions of teeny bopper fans.
[00:15:40] She's famous.
[00:15:41] Anyway, you say so.
[00:15:42] Just like I knew Cynthia Revo.
[00:15:44] I knew she had a powerful voice.
[00:15:45] I knew she could do that.
[00:15:47] I she crushed the hell out of that.
[00:15:50] She was amazing.
[00:15:50] She was good.
[00:15:51] I mean, I still prefer the OGs who made a short appearance in the movie for like five minutes.
[00:15:57] Yeah, I was a horny men's out and Christian channel with I loved them both.
[00:16:01] They are the original.
[00:16:02] I didn't even see the original music.
[00:16:04] But Kim pointed out, didn't she?
[00:16:05] She did.
[00:16:06] Of course she did.
[00:16:07] Oh, look who that is because you didn't know.
[00:16:09] Exactly.
[00:16:09] I wasn't sure if you knew, but I knew.
[00:16:11] Anyway, that's my OGs.
[00:16:13] But I mean, yeah.
[00:16:14] We're trying to fill up, live up to-
[00:16:16] What's a stage play, Prince?
[00:16:17] Trying to live up to Idina Menzel's shoes.
[00:16:19] I just went to a stage play.
[00:16:20] Took my mother to one.
[00:16:20] I think Cynthia did an amazing job.
[00:16:22] But Ariana Grande, the first five minutes of the movie, couldn't fricking stand her.
[00:16:26] Oh my God.
[00:16:27] I thought, oh my God, I gotta watch two and a half hours of her trying to act.
[00:16:31] But yeah, she just really embraced the role and being this mean bitch who basically, you
[00:16:37] know, eventually softens up and makes the green girl her best friend.
[00:16:41] But yeah, at the start I didn't like her at all.
[00:16:43] But yeah, the musical numbers and even the acting in between, I think she crushed it too.
[00:16:50] But apparently she's been preparing for this her whole life.
[00:16:52] Like since she was a little girl, she's wanted to do this.
[00:16:54] So she's, she was ready.
[00:16:57] Jeff Goldblum.
[00:16:58] Yeah, he didn't have a lot to do, but I didn't mind him.
[00:17:00] I mean, he's Goldblum.
[00:17:02] But yeah, Michelle Yeo was wasted.
[00:17:04] I mean, she didn't have a big enough heart and I didn't know what her character was supposed to be.
[00:17:08] I don't remember her from the original musical, but yeah, she runs the school, but she doesn't have any magic powers, but she's teaching a magic.
[00:17:15] It's like that, that makes no sense to me.
[00:17:17] This is the stuff they added so much stuff in here.
[00:17:19] And yeah, they should have explained some stuff.
[00:17:21] It's called Munchkin Land.
[00:17:22] There's no actual people under five feet tall.
[00:17:25] Even the teenagers are like almost six feet tall.
[00:17:28] They're seven feet tall.
[00:17:28] No, no, I saw them in the movie.
[00:17:30] They were all, yeah, they're all huge.
[00:17:31] Yeah, they're all huge.
[00:17:32] They're not munchkins.
[00:17:33] Yeah.
[00:17:34] No, no, they're from Munchkin Land.
[00:17:36] They were munchkins.
[00:17:36] Yeah, yeah, they were munchkins.
[00:17:37] They were supposed to be munchkins.
[00:17:38] Super tall munchkins.
[00:17:39] Little people.
[00:17:40] No, no, I saw them, Murray.
[00:17:41] They were big.
[00:17:42] They were the same size as everybody else.
[00:17:43] Yeah, that's right.
[00:17:44] So they weren't munchkins then.
[00:17:45] Yeah.
[00:17:46] But they were, they called the munchkins and they were from Munchkin Land.
[00:17:49] They're from Munchkin Land.
[00:17:50] So I'm very confused right now.
[00:17:52] So you live in Calgary.
[00:17:53] Does that make you a cowboy?
[00:17:55] No.
[00:17:56] No, exactly.
[00:17:57] My point.
[00:17:58] Anyway, the only little person or person of short stature in the entire film-
[00:18:04] Is a voice.
[00:18:05] Played a goat.
[00:18:06] Yeah.
[00:18:06] Oh, okay.
[00:18:08] And yeah, the whole animals who can talk and the whole thing about that.
[00:18:13] I don't, I don't remember that from the original musical either.
[00:18:15] Yeah.
[00:18:16] I don't remember that as being a major plot point.
[00:18:17] The goat is a big part of the original musical too.
[00:18:20] I don't remember that.
[00:18:20] I don't remember any talking animals in the first one.
[00:18:23] There's the animal rights.
[00:18:24] Yeah.
[00:18:25] It just seems like they made it a bigger deal than it was in the original, but anyway.
[00:18:29] Okay.
[00:18:29] And yeah, two hours and 40 minutes and that was only part one.
[00:18:33] Yeah.
[00:18:33] And it ended the exact same place that part one of the Broadway musical ended.
[00:18:39] Correct.
[00:18:39] Exact same spot.
[00:18:40] That makes sense.
[00:18:41] So if you knew exactly how the first act ended, that's how you know this one ends.
[00:18:45] Now we're getting like a year of let's all go to the lobby.
[00:18:48] Yeah.
[00:18:49] Next Christmas.
[00:18:49] So we're all going to the lobby for a year.
[00:18:52] Yeah.
[00:18:53] Awesome.
[00:18:53] Can we make it two or six?
[00:18:55] Next Christmas.
[00:18:55] He's part two.
[00:18:56] Or maybe do what the Costner thing did and just don't release the second one.
[00:19:01] We can only hope it's shorter than the first one, but I don't think it's going to be longer.
[00:19:06] Well, no, and you know what?
[00:19:07] They're going to split it into.
[00:19:08] In the actual Broadway musical.
[00:19:10] It's the second act is actually about 30 minutes shorter.
[00:19:12] I can't believe we're still talking about this.
[00:19:15] Goddamn movie.
[00:19:16] That's the only thing we have this week.
[00:19:17] Yeah.
[00:19:17] We got it.
[00:19:18] We got it now.
[00:19:19] We don't have to stretch out anything.
[00:19:20] You are boring me to freaking tears.
[00:19:22] Jim was like, you're, you're better.
[00:19:25] Okay.
[00:19:25] Don't get me wrong.
[00:19:26] Jim had me almost bored to tears.
[00:19:29] Like I'm sitting here looking up more movies for our fricking Christmas rage fricking Krampus
[00:19:35] episode, which I found carnage for Christmas, which came out this year.
[00:19:38] And I think that actually should be part of our episode.
[00:19:40] Maybe it will be.
[00:19:41] But at any rate, you know what?
[00:19:43] You had your chance to say something.
[00:19:44] So Mary, what else were you going to say?
[00:19:46] Go ahead.
[00:19:47] I was pretty much done.
[00:19:47] I'm like, yeah, I like, I liked the musical parts and yeah, Cynthia and Ariana crushed that
[00:19:53] part of it.
[00:19:53] Did they, but there was so much crap in between that.
[00:19:56] I don't remember from the actual musical.
[00:19:57] Like at one point I went to the bathroom cause it's two hours and 40 minutes long.
[00:20:01] And I came back and it was like, it was like some kind of ballroom dance thing.
[00:20:07] And then like Elphaba, the green chick, she's like doing weird stuff on the, on, on the dance
[00:20:12] floor.
[00:20:12] People are laughing at her and I'm like, what was that?
[00:20:14] Was it like the African anti ritual?
[00:20:16] What the hell was that?
[00:20:18] Yeah.
[00:20:18] So I, I didn't know, didn't realize, didn't think that was a necessary scene and then just
[00:20:23] added a bunch of crap.
[00:20:24] You didn't need to, but yeah, at the end, the last 15, 20 minutes.
[00:20:28] Awesome.
[00:20:29] Like I, I, yeah, granted special effects cause you know, she can't actually fly.
[00:20:33] What?
[00:20:35] I know spoiler alert, but no, the, the whole thing leading up to it, the whole chase, all
[00:20:39] that stuff was awesome.
[00:20:40] So yeah, I, I can't give it a range cause I love my musicals, but it's definitely a man.
[00:20:47] Like it's not good enough for, for Mondo.
[00:20:49] It's just, it was too long.
[00:20:50] Kind of about 45 minutes out of that.
[00:20:52] I might've changed my mind.
[00:20:53] I think maybe an hour out of it.
[00:20:55] All right, Bryce.
[00:20:56] Now you can talk.
[00:20:57] Okay.
[00:20:57] Well, Aliana Grandy or whatever her name is.
[00:21:00] Ariana Grande.
[00:21:02] Okay.
[00:21:02] Like extra.
[00:21:03] She starts, she starts singing in this high pitched whiny fricking voice.
[00:21:07] Yes.
[00:21:07] I couldn't understand a goddamn thing that came out of her mouth.
[00:21:11] I was lost immediately cause she's singing away.
[00:21:14] I don't know what the hell's going on.
[00:21:16] Cause I can't understand any of it.
[00:21:19] And then it just got worse from there.
[00:21:21] This is just a complete waste of freaking time.
[00:21:25] I, I'm sure the musical's better.
[00:21:28] It's way better, but this was not good.
[00:21:31] And then when it came up, like it came up as part one and I'm like, oh crap.
[00:21:36] Yeah.
[00:21:36] But I was like, you know what?
[00:21:37] Let's give it a chance.
[00:21:39] And then they, she starts singing it.
[00:21:40] I don't even know what the hell's going on.
[00:21:42] Can I understand?
[00:21:42] I couldn't understand her.
[00:21:44] Cause you never saw the musical.
[00:21:45] She's singing.
[00:21:46] It's.
[00:21:49] Can't understand any of it.
[00:21:51] It was like a fricking dog whistle.
[00:21:53] I don't know what's going on.
[00:21:56] I hated this.
[00:21:57] This is a complete rage.
[00:21:58] I can't believe that I have to go to another fricking episode.
[00:22:01] I've cut in this short because I don't want to talk about this bloody thing anymore.
[00:22:06] And then Jim's going to say, well, I got some things to unpack.
[00:22:09] And you know what?
[00:22:10] I don't care.
[00:22:12] Why are we unpacking anything with this thing?
[00:22:14] It's awful.
[00:22:19] I think Bryce needs a timeout.
[00:22:21] No, he's having said all that.
[00:22:24] I liked Cynthia Rivo.
[00:22:26] I think she was good.
[00:22:28] She's the only thing that shines in this whole movie.
[00:22:31] She's great.
[00:22:31] But that is not enough to get this beyond a rage.
[00:22:34] Cause I could not.
[00:22:36] Allie Grandy.
[00:22:37] You're terrible.
[00:22:38] Okay.
[00:22:39] You're just terrible.
[00:22:43] Don't even bother.
[00:22:44] Yeah.
[00:22:46] So, okay.
[00:22:47] Now I'm kind of excited rage.
[00:22:49] No.
[00:22:50] So, cause Kim has seen the musical.
[00:22:52] So both Murray and I and Kim have seen the musical.
[00:22:55] What did Kim, did Kim think this was a rage as well?
[00:22:58] I think she thought this was a bit of a waste of time.
[00:23:00] I don't, I don't think she hated it.
[00:23:02] I would imagine that she would give it a meh.
[00:23:05] Okay.
[00:23:06] But probably a low one.
[00:23:07] I don't, she wasn't super enthralled.
[00:23:08] At the end of it, she was like, this was not the musical.
[00:23:10] Yeah.
[00:23:11] And she, you know, yeah.
[00:23:13] No, no.
[00:23:14] It wasn't even that.
[00:23:15] Cause she didn't even like the musical.
[00:23:16] Like she doesn't think that the musical is that great either.
[00:23:18] Okay.
[00:23:18] She's not a big fan of wicked.
[00:23:20] Oh, okay.
[00:23:20] Well, there you go.
[00:23:21] Yeah.
[00:23:21] That would help probably.
[00:23:22] Yeah.
[00:23:23] Well, you know what?
[00:23:24] That probably would make it worse.
[00:23:25] She was interested to see what they were going to do.
[00:23:27] And then she's like, she, she immediately brought up the fact that this was like two
[00:23:31] and a half hours.
[00:23:32] And the stage plays about that long.
[00:23:34] Yeah.
[00:23:34] It is.
[00:23:35] If you take out the intermission, it's two and a half hours.
[00:23:38] It's less than two and a half hours.
[00:23:39] Yeah.
[00:23:39] So it, you know, just bloated garbage.
[00:23:43] I hated this.
[00:23:44] Yeah.
[00:23:44] It's way too bloated.
[00:23:44] It was Disney-fied.
[00:23:45] That's what happens.
[00:23:46] It was, it felt really Disney-fied.
[00:23:48] It was an excuse to get your money is what it was.
[00:23:49] And then the hype.
[00:23:50] Can we get on with our lives?
[00:23:52] Do we need to talk about this anymore?
[00:23:53] Are we going to cover?
[00:23:54] No, we're done.
[00:23:54] We like, so we had a rage sandwich is what we got there.
[00:23:58] Mm-hmm.
[00:23:59] With Murray's mammy.
[00:24:00] Yeah.
[00:24:01] I can't get it.
[00:24:01] We had a pretty mild rage on one side of this press.
[00:24:05] Yeah.
[00:24:05] That was a mild rage.
[00:24:06] I was surprised he'd get to do that.
[00:24:07] The other one was all of us.
[00:24:09] No, cause I, okay.
[00:24:10] Well, you're going to hear more about this later in the episode.
[00:24:13] All right.
[00:24:13] So get ready for that.
[00:24:14] All right.
[00:24:14] Just so you know.
[00:24:15] Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:24:16] Yeah.
[00:24:16] So moving on.
[00:24:17] So yeah, there was Cuff Docs, which I did not attend this year.
[00:24:20] So unfortunately for Cuff Docs.
[00:24:23] Okay.
[00:24:23] So people listening, if you're from Calgary.
[00:24:25] We are Devo.
[00:24:26] We are, um, we are Devo.
[00:24:28] No, yes.
[00:24:29] Um, but we normally will go to the entire, every festival that Cuff puts out because they're
[00:24:36] always fantastic.
[00:24:38] Um, this particular year I was sick for most of the festival and we had, so I couldn't
[00:24:43] go.
[00:24:44] Plus we had snow, which Marie could not make.
[00:24:46] So the only night that Bryce and I were able to attend was Friday night.
[00:24:51] So we saw two movies.
[00:24:52] And so we're going to talk about that.
[00:24:53] I think that's the night.
[00:24:54] That was the best.
[00:24:55] You know what?
[00:24:55] I have seen a lot of these movies that they played anyway.
[00:25:00] So, but, um, okay.
[00:25:02] So we're going to talk about Devo.
[00:25:05] Hmm.
[00:25:05] The movie.
[00:25:06] Yes.
[00:25:07] So after Bowie, but before Gwar, there was Devo, or at least they may say we are Devo.
[00:25:17] Yes.
[00:25:18] This doc is intellectually stimulating and whips society's mindset into shape.
[00:25:24] The de-evolution of man started by evil, evil cannibal monkeys and continues to devolve, including
[00:25:30] the decline of creative and unique artists like Devo.
[00:25:35] They started from being a visual group to a musical group to a film group.
[00:25:39] And I agree the mix of music and images, which creates movies, which is the greatest form of art.
[00:25:48] There is right from the mouth of Devo is a way to explain this film.
[00:25:55] I always knew who and what Devo was and what they wanted to be.
[00:25:59] The funny hats.
[00:25:59] And with tongue firmly in cheek, pointing fun at our society.
[00:26:05] And now I know their entire history.
[00:26:08] Some may feel that the end of Devo was a sad note in the history of creativity, but then if we didn't have Devo and it didn't end, then we would not always get to smell sausage in many new things.
[00:26:24] Even happening today.
[00:26:25] Even happening today.
[00:26:25] I absolutely loved, loved, loved this doc.
[00:26:30] Anybody who has a chance to see it has to see it.
[00:26:33] It is fun.
[00:26:35] And because I love these guys from album number one, which I had the original pressing of this when it first came out and still listen to it and enjoy this today.
[00:26:44] The doc is so mondo.
[00:26:46] Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:26:50] Yes.
[00:26:51] Yeah.
[00:26:52] I am not the biggest Devo fan ever because we are Devo.
[00:26:57] Yeah, we.
[00:26:58] And the reason being is that they were just slightly before my time.
[00:27:03] And I for some reason I missed out on Devo.
[00:27:08] And, you know, any documentary that comes out where I don't know a lot about the band and at the end of it, I want to know more.
[00:27:17] And I also want to own some of their music.
[00:27:20] Yeah.
[00:27:20] And that was the case again with this one.
[00:27:24] Devo is so unique.
[00:27:26] Like, I did not really like my whole thing with Devo is I knew whip it and I knew that they covered the stone song satisfaction.
[00:27:35] Yeah, that was the end of section, which was I could just picture Mick Jagger dancing to it because apparently they played it for Mick Jagger just to get his OK.
[00:27:45] And then at first they were like, I don't know if he's digging this at all.
[00:27:49] Then all of a sudden he started dancing around the room.
[00:27:53] OK, they got the old OK with Mick Jagger dancing moves like Jagger.
[00:27:59] At any rate, this was so well done.
[00:28:03] It was so interesting.
[00:28:04] I knew nothing going in about Devo.
[00:28:06] I really didn't.
[00:28:07] I knew that it stood for the evolution.
[00:28:11] That's all I knew.
[00:28:12] And I didn't really know what that was because I I wasn't even like when they were big,
[00:28:18] which, you know, they weren't really ever big.
[00:28:20] But when they had their one big hit, that's all I ever heard.
[00:28:24] And even that was kind of before I was really listening to music.
[00:28:28] Like, what was that?
[00:28:28] 82, 83.
[00:28:30] Yeah, it's got to be.
[00:28:31] Well, I bought the album in high school.
[00:28:34] Yeah.
[00:28:34] So, I mean, I think I was like, you're in seven or eight or something.
[00:28:40] Yeah.
[00:28:40] So I didn't know nothing from that.
[00:28:42] I knew nothing from nothing.
[00:28:44] And they weren't.
[00:28:45] And so just so you know, it wasn't just whip it like whip it was their big.
[00:28:48] Their biggest thing I know of.
[00:28:49] But their one album had like four songs on the charts.
[00:28:53] All I ever heard was whip it.
[00:28:54] Yeah.
[00:28:55] And that's the whole deal.
[00:28:56] And then the video with them with the plot, the plant pots on their heads.
[00:29:03] That's the only thing I know about Devo.
[00:29:04] That's it.
[00:29:05] At any rate, I'm not going to yammer too much longer.
[00:29:08] But the fact of the matter is, this made me want to know more.
[00:29:11] I was very, very intrigued by this band and the concept and the evolution of the band.
[00:29:18] I mean, it's a great.
[00:29:19] The de-evolution of the band.
[00:29:19] Yes.
[00:29:20] Good.
[00:29:21] Touché.
[00:29:22] Anyway, this was a very good documentary.
[00:29:26] So good that I would say it is Mondo.
[00:29:30] Yeah.
[00:29:30] And you know, here's the thing about this.
[00:29:32] And the fact that I think we got every single Devo member in their interview too.
[00:29:39] But there's the two main guys that they did most of the talking.
[00:29:43] Yeah.
[00:29:44] And to me, it was just like, what's so cool about it is that the Devo, Devoians, if that's
[00:29:51] a thing, are now still working together today to this date.
[00:29:55] Directing films, making things.
[00:29:58] Like I put some, somewhat inside jokes.
[00:29:59] Yeah, the creative juices are still flowing.
[00:30:02] Can they still have the plant pots on their head?
[00:30:04] No.
[00:30:04] No.
[00:30:04] The plant pot was just for like a shtick.
[00:30:07] They had a lot of different shticks that they did.
[00:30:09] Yeah.
[00:30:10] It was just like, they were one of the first.
[00:30:12] They also have the JFK hair.
[00:30:13] Yeah, the JFK hair.
[00:30:14] Which everybody thought was Ronald Reagan hair.
[00:30:16] It was Ronald Reagan hair.
[00:30:17] It's like, no, it's JFK hair.
[00:30:19] Because I guess that's pretty similar haircut probably in the 60s and 50s.
[00:30:23] But yeah, now the reason I brought up about the smelling sausages, the one guy's like,
[00:30:29] yeah, I put that into every single piece of work that we do.
[00:30:32] Yeah.
[00:30:32] Can you smell sausage?
[00:30:34] It's just like random shtick like that trying to stir up shtick in society.
[00:30:39] This, yeah.
[00:30:40] I would buy this.
[00:30:42] Very good.
[00:30:43] It made me re-download Devo albums that I haven't heard in a long time.
[00:30:47] I wish these guys would go on tour again.
[00:30:49] That would be so much fun to see them.
[00:30:51] I'm disappointed every time I see anybody go do reunion tours.
[00:30:56] It's a bummer, man.
[00:30:57] I don't know why anybody wants that.
[00:30:58] They never go alone anymore.
[00:31:00] Like all the old groups in 70s and 80s.
[00:31:02] They like clump them all together.
[00:31:04] I only want Devo.
[00:31:06] These five bands are all touring together.
[00:31:08] I want to see Devo and Guar.
[00:31:10] Those are, because the reason I make that comparison to Guar.
[00:31:14] No Dave Brocky with Guar anymore.
[00:31:16] It's not worth it.
[00:31:17] But Guar, you know, Guar is always still going to be fun.
[00:31:20] I don't care what you say.
[00:31:21] They'll be, they'll print.
[00:31:22] I don't care what you say.
[00:31:23] No matter what de-evolution of Guar we get.
[00:31:26] Okay.
[00:31:26] If Devo and Guar came to town as a double bill, yes, I would be there.
[00:31:32] Because like, that's what Devo was.
[00:31:34] Devo was, it wasn't just the music.
[00:31:37] It was, it was everything.
[00:31:38] You were there for an experience.
[00:31:40] Like the fact that they...
[00:31:42] You can say what you want.
[00:31:43] It was theater and it was also, they were also definitely trying to get messages across.
[00:31:49] And whether you like it or not, Guar, and it was totally art.
[00:31:53] And Guar is the same.
[00:31:54] Guar also has a message.
[00:31:55] That's why I said it.
[00:31:57] Guar also is art.
[00:31:58] Yeah.
[00:31:58] They're kind of two sides of the same point.
[00:32:00] And they take their, they took their influence from Bowie.
[00:32:03] So yeah, it really is the evolution.
[00:32:05] The evolution of Devo is Bowie, Devo, Guar.
[00:32:10] That's exactly my argument.
[00:32:12] I like it.
[00:32:13] Okay.
[00:32:13] You know what?
[00:32:14] I'm on board with that.
[00:32:15] You know what?
[00:32:15] Normally I'm not on board with the stupid crap that comes out of your mouth.
[00:32:18] But this time, the stupid crap that's coming out of your mouth is making some sense.
[00:32:25] You know what?
[00:32:26] Ariana Grande did a great job.
[00:32:28] Oh, whatever.
[00:32:29] I couldn't even understand her.
[00:32:32] I can't hit the fricking high notes that she...
[00:32:35] Well, I can.
[00:32:36] Anyways.
[00:32:37] That's why.
[00:32:37] What else did we see at Cup?
[00:32:38] We saw Chain Reactions.
[00:32:40] Oh, yes.
[00:32:41] All right.
[00:32:42] So a movie about people who were influenced by the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
[00:32:48] Oh, right.
[00:32:49] That's the one.
[00:32:49] All the meaning gleamed from it, such as Stephen King, Takashi Miike, Patton Oswald, Karen Kusama, Alexandra Heller Nichols.
[00:33:02] I loved hearing how this film affected them and their work.
[00:33:08] And being such a fan of this great American art piece.
[00:33:12] And yes, I'm calling it an art piece.
[00:33:14] It is an art piece.
[00:33:15] It's always exciting to be immersed in anything that surrounds the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
[00:33:22] I really liked reviewing it with different perspectives, but I don't think it's as strong a film from director Alexandra O'Felipe.
[00:33:34] Yeah.
[00:33:36] Who, if you're not aware, directed one of the greatest, greatest documentaries called Leap of Faith about William Friedkin on The Exorcist.
[00:33:47] That movie, if you want to see, in my opinion, his best film.
[00:33:50] Now, he's made a lot of great films.
[00:33:52] He's made a lot of great films.
[00:33:53] He's like almost everything he makes, in my opinion.
[00:33:55] And this one was very good.
[00:33:56] If he gets to eight, I think this is one that we will definitely have to talk about.
[00:34:00] Yeah.
[00:34:00] But this for me was a high man.
[00:34:02] I didn't get it to a Mondo.
[00:34:04] Also, mostly because like by the time we got to the end of it, I'm like, I don't fucking care what you guys think about this movie anymore.
[00:34:12] Like I need to move past it.
[00:34:13] It became a little repetitious as it went on.
[00:34:17] And yeah, it lost steam.
[00:34:19] I was all in on Patton Oswalt.
[00:34:21] Patton Oswalt was great.
[00:34:23] Tekashi Mika was great.
[00:34:25] And then it seemed to be diminishing returns.
[00:34:27] And I don't think it actually was diminishing returns.
[00:34:29] It's just we're going over the same thing in kind of the same way.
[00:34:32] Yeah.
[00:34:32] And it just got redundant.
[00:34:34] It did.
[00:34:34] And that's, I still, I still really enjoyed it.
[00:34:38] Oh yeah.
[00:34:38] But why did you enjoy it?
[00:34:40] Like I think you enjoyed it.
[00:34:41] I enjoyed it because I'm a huge fan.
[00:34:43] Huge fan of the movie.
[00:34:44] Exactly.
[00:34:45] And that's the whole thing.
[00:34:46] And that's what I was going to say.
[00:34:47] If you're a fan of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you're going to enjoy this.
[00:34:52] Yes.
[00:34:52] If you're not a fan, you'll probably enjoy it for about two or three segments.
[00:34:57] Yeah.
[00:34:57] I would have liked it.
[00:34:58] And then it's going to be a little tedious.
[00:35:01] I didn't like the original.
[00:35:02] Yeah.
[00:35:02] No, I think that's it.
[00:35:04] But if you like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it's really worth watching.
[00:35:08] Yeah, totally.
[00:35:09] But it's a high man.
[00:35:10] If nothing else for Patton Oswalt and Takashi Mika, the two of those were like bangers.
[00:35:18] Yeah.
[00:35:19] But yeah, it's so cool to see how these guys were influenced by it and how they felt film
[00:35:26] in general was influenced.
[00:35:28] And yeah, it's crazy.
[00:35:32] I mean, you know, Takashi Mika is like, you know, nobody wants to go to Texas because
[00:35:36] we all just figured there was a bunch of people running around there.
[00:35:41] There isn't.
[00:35:43] I always play one or two.
[00:35:45] Chainsaws and shotguns.
[00:35:46] I've been to Texas a few times, actually.
[00:35:49] And you haven't been murdered?
[00:35:49] I have been exactly to Texas four times.
[00:35:52] Ah.
[00:35:53] And each time I not once saw a chainsaw.
[00:35:56] Hmm.
[00:35:57] Did you see shotguns?
[00:35:58] I saw lots of shotguns.
[00:35:59] Oh, sure you did.
[00:36:00] Everybody's just walking around with them.
[00:36:01] Cowboy jersey.
[00:36:02] And it really does work if you go, the stars at night are big and bright.
[00:36:08] Back in the heart of Texas.
[00:36:11] Yes.
[00:36:11] They'll all scream it.
[00:36:12] It's a thing.
[00:36:12] You hop off the...
[00:36:13] I did it when I hopped off the airplane.
[00:36:15] All the stewards...
[00:36:16] They all joined in.
[00:36:17] Well...
[00:36:17] Stewards and deses.
[00:36:19] Yeah.
[00:36:19] They all did it.
[00:36:20] And then I looked for Pee Wee, but he wasn't there.
[00:36:22] He wasn't there.
[00:36:23] All right.
[00:36:24] Because you know what?
[00:36:24] He was in the basement of the Alamo.
[00:36:27] So...
[00:36:27] Yes.
[00:36:28] So that was what?
[00:36:29] Two Mondos there?
[00:36:30] Those...
[00:36:30] No, you had a man.
[00:36:32] Two, Maz.
[00:36:33] But prior to that it was two Mondos.
[00:36:35] Yeah.
[00:36:35] Diva was Mondo Mondo.
[00:36:42] And Chain Reactions was...
[00:36:48] Nicely done.
[00:36:49] Better late than never.
[00:36:50] That's right.
[00:36:51] Exactly.
[00:36:53] Whatever.
[00:36:58] Oh, yeah.
[00:36:59] You know what?
[00:36:59] This has been exciting.
[00:37:00] I can't wait to hear what Mary's gonna give us.
[00:37:02] I don't think Bryce is gonna like this much either.
[00:37:04] What?
[00:37:05] He probably won't either.
[00:37:06] Okay.
[00:37:07] So, yeah.
[00:37:08] Is it your favorite Ariana Grande movies?
[00:37:10] No.
[00:37:10] I should've...
[00:37:11] Musicals.
[00:37:12] Some do musicals.
[00:37:13] No, I wouldn't do that.
[00:37:14] Oh, thank God.
[00:37:15] I was bored on Saturday night.
[00:37:17] What?
[00:37:17] It was cold outside.
[00:37:19] My car was covered with a foot of snow.
[00:37:22] Couldn't go anywhere.
[00:37:24] Nothing on TV.
[00:37:26] Well...
[00:37:27] PBS was showing the original Murder on the Orient Express from 1974.
[00:37:34] The original's great.
[00:37:35] What are you talking about?
[00:37:35] So, yeah.
[00:37:36] I watched it.
[00:37:38] I know you guys don't like Kenneth Branagh's promo.
[00:37:40] Uh...
[00:37:41] This film was so much...
[00:37:43] No, I hate it.
[00:37:44] Jim doesn't actually mind it.
[00:37:46] So much worse.
[00:37:48] What?
[00:37:49] Much like the remake, the original threw together a bunch of Hollywood stars and just swirled
[00:37:56] it around.
[00:37:58] First, there's the main character.
[00:38:01] Kenneth Branagh was by far the superior who quote Perrault.
[00:38:06] I found Albert Finney's version to be a bumbling fool.
[00:38:10] Hmm.
[00:38:11] An incompetent old man that I wouldn't trust to find my lost keys.
[00:38:16] Maybe he was just acting that way.
[00:38:18] If he was meant to be the comic relief of the film, mission accomplished.
[00:38:22] God, did I ever hate him.
[00:38:24] Oh, man.
[00:38:24] The whole movie.
[00:38:25] He ruined it.
[00:38:26] Completely.
[00:38:26] I think, Murray, I think Bryce is actually liking this.
[00:38:29] What are you talking about?
[00:38:30] Well, you guys both hate these movies, so I figured as much.
[00:38:33] Uh...
[00:38:33] Now, there's no doubt that Lauren Bacall is an accomplished actress.
[00:38:38] And she puts in a decent performance here.
[00:38:40] But I will always pick Michelle Pfeiffer.
[00:38:45] Every time.
[00:38:47] Then we have Sean Connery as Colonel Arbuthnot.
[00:38:52] Did he have French accent too?
[00:38:53] Cause that would have been...
[00:38:54] He's Scottish.
[00:38:55] He has no accent.
[00:38:55] He has a Scottish accent.
[00:38:56] What are you talking about?
[00:38:57] He had a Scottish accent when he was speaking Russian in the country red October.
[00:39:01] Yes, one of my favorite movies.
[00:39:02] But his Russian was terrible.
[00:39:04] Uh, I'm confused about this character.
[00:39:06] From both versions.
[00:39:08] He's from India, but he's not Indian.
[00:39:11] In the remake, he's played by Leslie Odom.
[00:39:14] An African-American who falls in love with a white woman at a time when it's not allowed.
[00:39:19] In the original, he's played by a Scotsman.
[00:39:23] Who is in the middle of a divorce.
[00:39:25] To an Indian woman, I think.
[00:39:28] Either way, Sean Connery was wasted and miscast in this film.
[00:39:32] Like, I don't even know why they put him in it.
[00:39:35] I think he's always miscast.
[00:39:35] Cause he's always miscast.
[00:39:36] Cause he's Sean Connery.
[00:39:37] As the rest of the cast, I prefer...
[00:39:40] When was he wasn't miscast?
[00:39:42] He was pretty good as Bond.
[00:39:43] Was he?
[00:39:44] Yeah.
[00:39:45] He was okay as Bond.
[00:39:46] And he was good as...
[00:39:47] He was Highlander!
[00:39:49] Okay, let's not even talk about that one.
[00:39:51] He played a Spanish dude.
[00:39:52] Yeah, he played a Spanish dude with a Scottish accent.
[00:39:54] Yeah.
[00:39:55] Or when he played The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
[00:39:58] It was a perfect role.
[00:39:59] He played one.
[00:40:00] Oh, stop it.
[00:40:00] That one movie...
[00:40:01] That one movie he spoke...
[00:40:03] He had Japanese.
[00:40:04] It was the one with Wesley Snipes.
[00:40:06] He was a Japanese dude in that one.
[00:40:08] Anyway, yeah.
[00:40:10] As the rest of the cast, I for the most part prefer the actors from the remake.
[00:40:15] Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, even Johnny Depp.
[00:40:18] So much better.
[00:40:20] Neither film is all that great.
[00:40:22] I'm guessing the book is way better.
[00:40:24] Still, I like the murder mystery genre, so I will always take a chance on the whodunits.
[00:40:30] Hmm.
[00:40:31] Alright, that's pretty much all I did.
[00:40:32] Here's a hint.
[00:40:33] It'll be a whodontit with me.
[00:40:35] Yes, I know.
[00:40:37] Alright, that's what I did this weekend.
[00:40:39] Nice!
[00:40:40] Temperature rising!
[00:40:43] Vision blurring!
[00:40:46] Rage taking over!
[00:40:48] This is not necessarily an unusual rage for me.
[00:41:27] However, what probably was not the right thing to do before we started watching Wicked is put on a bunch of operas and stage performances that are coming...
[00:41:40] Oh, on the trailers.
[00:41:41] As in live action...
[00:41:43] Um...
[00:41:45] Uh...
[00:41:45] Theater projects.
[00:41:47] So that you're actually seeing the live performances.
[00:41:50] Because that's exactly how I wish we would have seen Wicked.
[00:41:53] Is just put it out as one of those ones.
[00:41:55] It's a special appearance thing.
[00:41:57] And let us watch the original the way it was intended.
[00:41:59] And that...
[00:42:01] But what actually continued to make me rage before we even started watching Wicked was that we got five trailers before Wicked.
[00:42:11] All of them were either live action...
[00:42:14] Opera.
[00:42:15] No.
[00:42:16] Five other live action reimaginings of cartoons...
[00:42:22] Yeah!
[00:42:22] Yay!
[00:42:23] Or...
[00:42:23] Or...
[00:42:26] Or...
[00:42:27] Of cartoons...
[00:42:28] Before we got into Wicked.
[00:42:30] Yep.
[00:42:30] So, I'm thinking to myself...
[00:42:32] What the actual fuck is happening here?
[00:42:34] They were trying to appeal to the kids.
[00:42:36] Why?
[00:42:36] Exactly!
[00:42:36] Which goes to show this movie wasn't made for...
[00:42:39] Adults.
[00:42:40] ...adults in my opinion.
[00:42:41] Like, maybe people that are big into Disney, which I am absolutely not big into Disney.
[00:42:48] Because Disney in my opinion ruins everything.
[00:42:51] No, like they had to cast about three different Disney shows in this movie, it seemed.
[00:42:55] Yeah.
[00:42:56] Yeah.
[00:42:56] It was just like, you know what?
[00:42:58] You know what?
[00:42:58] We need to make a superstar Disney film and we'll just fill it full of Disney-isms.
[00:43:03] And then on top of that, we got Disney on top of Disney on top of Disney before the movie.
[00:43:08] So my rage is going to see these.
[00:43:11] I'm going to no longer get there early.
[00:43:13] I'm going to come 20 minutes into the actual commercials and trailers.
[00:43:17] You got to see the trailers.
[00:43:18] And they didn't even have an Ozempic commercial.
[00:43:20] So, you know what?
[00:43:21] No, they had two of them before the trailers.
[00:43:24] You just asked.
[00:43:25] I just asked.
[00:43:26] And with all the billions of dollars that Ozempic is making, they still only have one freaking commercial.
[00:43:30] Still the best commercial I ever made.
[00:43:32] It's super.
[00:43:33] It's super.
[00:43:34] Yeah.
[00:43:35] Anyway.
[00:43:35] That's my rage.
[00:43:36] It's fucking trailers.
[00:43:38] Yeah, okay.
[00:43:38] As happens, you go to kiddie movies.
[00:43:40] I guess that's what Wicked is.
[00:43:42] It wasn't when I saw it on stage.
[00:44:06] All right.
[00:44:07] My rage is?
[00:44:08] Andy Grande.
[00:44:10] Wicked.
[00:44:12] Part one.
[00:44:15] You said you didn't want to talk about this anymore.
[00:44:17] He wanted to get all of his suffering over at once.
[00:44:20] He wanted to get all his suffering.
[00:44:21] I have a feeling if he would have saw the actual musical, he wouldn't have suffered.
[00:44:26] I don't think.
[00:44:26] Part one.
[00:44:30] Well, you can say the same thing about a lot of movies.
[00:44:33] Like, Dune part one.
[00:44:36] Thank you.
[00:44:37] And now we have, what, a part three coming out?
[00:44:39] Can't wait for three.
[00:44:39] I have no...
[00:44:40] And they're all three and a half hours long.
[00:44:43] I wish.
[00:44:44] That's my rage.
[00:44:45] Dune period.
[00:44:46] If you're going to make it three hours long, it should at least be the whole movie.
[00:44:52] That's all Dune is.
[00:44:53] It's just seven hours of...
[00:44:55] Now, do Ariana Grande.
[00:44:57] I used to sing the song.
[00:45:05] Popular.
[00:45:07] I don't...
[00:45:08] Is that what she said?
[00:45:09] I have no idea.
[00:45:10] That's one of the songs.
[00:45:10] Yes.
[00:45:11] Popular.
[00:45:25] Well, we were missing the mer last week.
[00:45:27] Yeah, well.
[00:45:29] And we didn't know how much time we were going to have.
[00:45:31] And then I was sick.
[00:45:32] And it was like a big shit show.
[00:45:34] So, if this is your first time listening to our podcast, welcome to The Rage.
[00:45:38] And if you liked Wicked and you stopped listening after that, because you're like, who could listen
[00:45:43] to these people who didn't love Wicked?
[00:45:44] Yeah, they're idiots.
[00:45:45] They didn't like Wicked.
[00:45:46] Then we're not the right podcast for you.
[00:45:48] But if you want to go check out our lists page, it's at filmrageyyc.com.
[00:45:53] Go over to the lists.
[00:45:54] And on there, you will see five lists.
[00:45:57] You will see the mesmerized, the repulsive, the doubted, the undoubted, and the once mesmerizing.
[00:46:03] And so, we have to try and take down our mesmerized list.
[00:46:07] Because if two mesmerized actors or actresses or people are in a movie together, there can
[00:46:15] be only one Sean Connery.
[00:46:17] That's right.
[00:46:18] There can only be one.
[00:46:19] So, the mer has been trying to desperately get rid of Tom Hardy.
[00:46:23] And he believes he's found...
[00:46:25] There was like eight movies he was in with people on this list.
[00:46:27] This is great.
[00:46:29] All right.
[00:46:29] Because nobody else...
[00:46:30] Like, I have so many no matches here.
[00:46:32] Let's see.
[00:46:32] Try again?
[00:46:33] All right, then.
[00:46:34] I've got one.
[00:46:35] Yep.
[00:46:36] Says it's Olivia Colman.
[00:46:38] Nice.
[00:46:39] Called Locke.
[00:46:40] With an E.
[00:46:41] Locke with an E.
[00:46:43] L-O-C-K-E.
[00:46:44] Yes.
[00:46:44] I don't know.
[00:46:45] I assume they're both in it.
[00:46:46] But, yeah.
[00:46:47] You assume they're both in it?
[00:46:48] Well, I hope so.
[00:46:49] L-O-C...
[00:46:50] According to your favorite website, they are.
[00:46:53] My favorite website.
[00:46:54] Tribute?
[00:46:54] IMDb.
[00:46:55] Tribute.ca?
[00:46:57] That's his favorite website.
[00:46:59] So, it's Tom Hardy versus Olivia Colman in the movie Locke.
[00:47:01] L-O-C-K-E.
[00:47:03] What year was it from?
[00:47:04] I don't know.
[00:47:04] What do you mean you don't know?
[00:47:06] 2000 something.
[00:47:06] He doesn't know everything.
[00:47:08] I don't remember that stuff.
[00:47:08] All right.
[00:47:09] Whatever.
[00:47:09] Not a human computer, Bryce.
[00:47:11] Just be thankful we even got that, Bryce.
[00:47:14] Okay.
[00:47:14] I'm telling you.
[00:47:14] There's not much left.
[00:47:15] So thankful.
[00:47:17] I'm looking up Locke just so we all have information.
[00:47:20] There's no reason.
[00:47:21] Apparently, I'm not connected to Bryce's internet.
[00:47:23] You don't really need to look it up.
[00:47:25] It's from 2013.
[00:47:27] 13.
[00:47:27] Yeah.
[00:47:28] There we go.
[00:47:30] And, yeah.
[00:47:32] I don't know how long Coleman's in it.
[00:47:34] She's not in the start.
[00:47:36] She's not in the top.
[00:47:37] The top two on IMDb.
[00:47:39] Tom Hardy, Olivia Colman right beside each other.
[00:47:42] Then there's Ruth Wilson, Andrew Scott's in it.
[00:47:45] I got the-
[00:47:46] Tom Holland was in it.
[00:47:47] Tom Hardy, Ruth Wilson, Andrew Scott, Tom Holland, Olivia Colman.
[00:47:53] The British's.
[00:47:53] All the British Toms and all the British Olivia's?
[00:47:56] All the Brits.
[00:47:56] Yeah.
[00:47:57] I've got her as the fifth person on there.
[00:48:00] This is second.
[00:48:01] Yeah, well.
[00:48:02] All right.
[00:48:02] Top Bill cast.
[00:48:03] So it's from what year?
[00:48:05] 2013.
[00:48:06] Oh.
[00:48:07] Nice.
[00:48:07] It's pretty recent.
[00:48:08] Fairly recent.
[00:48:09] Nice.
[00:48:10] All right.
[00:48:11] Well, I'm kind of looking forward to it.
[00:48:17] Anything else?
[00:48:18] No?
[00:48:18] Yeah.
[00:48:19] No, that's it.
[00:48:19] We didn't have it.
[00:48:21] There's-
[00:48:21] Don't want to put Annie Grande on the mesmerizing list?
[00:48:23] I didn't-
[00:48:24] No, I don't think-
[00:48:25] Bryce might put her on the repulsive list,
[00:48:27] but you and I didn't think so,
[00:48:28] so that's not going to happen.
[00:48:29] She's been in, like, one movie, but-
[00:48:31] Hmm.
[00:48:37] Last week on Rage or Dare,
[00:48:41] the boys chose, sorry, I mean, were forced,
[00:48:46] to suckle from my proverbial rage teat.
[00:48:49] Ah, yes.
[00:48:50] I remember that particular proverb well.
[00:48:53] Hmm.
[00:48:54] And when they chose,
[00:48:55] they selected the highly debated remake
[00:48:57] of the classic Hitchcock film,
[00:48:59] Psycho,
[00:49:00] remade almost scene for scene
[00:49:03] shot for shot.
[00:49:03] In 1998 by Gus Van Zandt.
[00:49:06] This week, it's Bryce's job to rage or dare.
[00:49:11] What?
[00:49:11] Although I'm sure he will complain about it in some way.
[00:49:15] Now, let's check in with the boys
[00:49:16] and see if an almost shot-for-shot remake
[00:49:19] of a classic film is rage-worthy,
[00:49:21] or if it, just because it flagrantly copies
[00:49:24] the undoubted Alfred Hitchcock,
[00:49:26] it deserves to be seen anyway.
[00:49:30] Okay, first of all,
[00:49:32] I don't believe it's my turn this week.
[00:49:35] It is your turn.
[00:49:36] Okay.
[00:49:36] I believe you are wrong.
[00:49:37] This is,
[00:49:38] you should always check our website.
[00:49:40] It lists everything down.
[00:49:41] So, Psycho, directed by Gus Van Zandt.
[00:49:43] Yes.
[00:49:44] Shot for shot.
[00:49:45] Well, it's not,
[00:49:46] and that's,
[00:49:47] this is what I remember it being.
[00:49:49] Yes!
[00:49:49] Can I go first then, please?
[00:49:51] No.
[00:49:52] No.
[00:49:52] Okay, so I am a big enough person
[00:49:56] to admit when I'm wrong.
[00:49:58] That's good of you.
[00:49:59] I watched this again,
[00:50:01] simultaneously.
[00:50:02] And I was,
[00:50:02] I was just irritated by it this time.
[00:50:06] Oh my, isn't it?
[00:50:07] Like, completely irritated.
[00:50:08] Inch, I can't wait to hear this!
[00:50:10] And here's the whole thing.
[00:50:11] If it was shot-for-shot,
[00:50:14] and it was a big middle finger
[00:50:15] to Hollywood,
[00:50:17] Preach it, sister!
[00:50:18] I'd be like,
[00:50:19] I'm all in on this.
[00:50:20] But it wasn't shot-for-shot.
[00:50:22] They changed things.
[00:50:23] They made stuff silly.
[00:50:26] We had to watch,
[00:50:27] they even like,
[00:50:28] stuff that was like,
[00:50:29] kind of implied in the original,
[00:50:31] like him, you know,
[00:50:32] him masturbating
[00:50:33] while he was spying on her.
[00:50:34] I can't wait to talk.
[00:50:37] That,
[00:50:37] that was such a cool,
[00:50:39] but it,
[00:50:40] it became,
[00:50:41] eh,
[00:50:41] when,
[00:50:42] plus,
[00:50:43] Vince Vaughn,
[00:50:44] I'm sorry.
[00:50:45] You are no Anthony Perkins.
[00:50:47] Oh my God.
[00:50:48] But the last scene
[00:50:49] of the movie,
[00:50:50] it's like,
[00:50:51] it's like he was doing
[00:50:52] Gomer Pyle.
[00:50:53] What,
[00:50:53] what is that?
[00:50:55] With his,
[00:50:56] with his facial expressions.
[00:50:57] What the,
[00:50:58] what the hell is going on?
[00:51:00] And he was Gomer Pyle
[00:51:01] through the whole bloody movie.
[00:51:02] Like,
[00:51:04] why did,
[00:51:04] why,
[00:51:05] what kind of choice was that?
[00:51:07] Gus Van said,
[00:51:08] why did you want Gomer Pyle?
[00:51:10] Why didn't you just get Gomer Pyle?
[00:51:12] He was probably still alive.
[00:51:13] Yeah.
[00:51:13] Oh,
[00:51:14] right.
[00:51:14] Like,
[00:51:15] what the hell is going on?
[00:51:17] At any rate,
[00:51:19] just little things.
[00:51:19] If they would have done this shot for shot,
[00:51:21] I would have said,
[00:51:22] cool,
[00:51:22] big middle finger to Hollywood.
[00:51:23] But not only did they change that,
[00:51:25] they have to have,
[00:51:26] Anne Hesh sprawled over the tub,
[00:51:28] showing her ass.
[00:51:29] Don't know why we needed that.
[00:51:31] They had to have blood in that scene
[00:51:33] where we never got in the original.
[00:51:35] She slides down and then there's like blood on the wall.
[00:51:38] I,
[00:51:38] I didn't need that.
[00:51:39] If you're,
[00:51:39] if you're going to do a something original
[00:51:42] or try to do a twist on,
[00:51:44] do a twist on it.
[00:51:44] Don't kind of half-assed copy it.
[00:51:47] And yes,
[00:51:48] all of the major scenes are the exact same angles,
[00:51:52] the exact same amount of time.
[00:51:54] But,
[00:51:55] you know,
[00:51:55] when the scene where he's picking her up,
[00:51:57] picking up mother and taking her down to the cellar
[00:52:00] and you've got that shot from above
[00:52:01] and like everything's exactly the same in the major scenes,
[00:52:05] but it's not all the same.
[00:52:06] And so it's not the exercise that I thought it was,
[00:52:09] which is kind of admirable in a way,
[00:52:11] because it is a big F you to the studios,
[00:52:14] but that's not what this is.
[00:52:15] Cause we changed a whole bunch of things.
[00:52:17] We changed even when they were in the original,
[00:52:20] the,
[00:52:21] the,
[00:52:21] uh,
[00:52:21] sheriffs coming out of church when they have the conversation with
[00:52:24] them.
[00:52:24] How I think in this one,
[00:52:26] I can't remember.
[00:52:27] I believe they're talking to him on the phone and he's at home
[00:52:30] and like his,
[00:52:31] his,
[00:52:31] uh,
[00:52:31] in his like,
[00:52:32] uh,
[00:52:32] robe or pajamas.
[00:52:34] I was like,
[00:52:35] like if you're going to do it,
[00:52:37] do it.
[00:52:37] If you're not,
[00:52:38] don't.
[00:52:39] And I don't even know what this was because so I,
[00:52:42] I was so disenchanted with this when I watched it again.
[00:52:47] Cause I was like,
[00:52:48] no,
[00:52:48] this isn't what I remember.
[00:52:49] This isn't a big F you.
[00:52:51] So I've said F you Gus Van Sant for making me watch this
[00:52:55] remake.
[00:52:56] I don't know why,
[00:52:56] what I was thinking the first time I saw it.
[00:52:58] I don't know if I just hadn't seen psycho in a long time.
[00:53:00] And I was like,
[00:53:01] this is kind of funny.
[00:53:02] I don't know what mood I was in,
[00:53:04] but this is tedious and just frustrating.
[00:53:08] And watching Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates is God.
[00:53:13] It's,
[00:53:13] it's,
[00:53:13] it's awful.
[00:53:14] He's not good.
[00:53:16] He's not good.
[00:53:17] I didn't like this.
[00:53:19] This was a rage and I didn't think it was going to be.
[00:53:23] Nice.
[00:53:24] Okay.
[00:53:25] So this is why I wanted to go first.
[00:53:27] And I wish I would have,
[00:53:28] of note,
[00:53:30] this film is not a direct shot for shot as Bryce thought it was.
[00:53:35] As we discussed last week.
[00:53:38] I'm glad I went first.
[00:53:39] Because the original is one hour,
[00:53:42] 48 minutes and 53 seconds.
[00:53:44] And the remake is an hour and 45 minutes.
[00:53:46] But Gus Van Zandt still had extra time to change Norman's character from a predator to a sexual deviant predator.
[00:53:57] In the scene where he's watching her get undressed,
[00:54:00] as you've already alluded,
[00:54:01] to get into the shower.
[00:54:03] In remake,
[00:54:04] they have Vince Vaughn jerking off.
[00:54:06] If you're going to have an argument that it's a middle finger to the studio,
[00:54:11] then do exactly that.
[00:54:13] But to make the character different by injecting things,
[00:54:16] I admit I was wrong,
[00:54:17] like jerking off.
[00:54:18] That's why I wanted to go first.
[00:54:19] I wanted to shame you.
[00:54:21] If you're going to make a character just further ruins it.
[00:54:26] Yeah.
[00:54:26] On top of that,
[00:54:28] when Hitchcock shot the shower scene,
[00:54:30] he did so,
[00:54:32] so that at the time,
[00:54:33] the film,
[00:54:34] as you're watching it,
[00:54:35] you really didn't know that Tony Perkins' character was a woman.
[00:54:39] But Van Zandt shows,
[00:54:41] it's blatantly Vince Vaughn.
[00:54:43] The guy's like eight feet tall,
[00:54:45] and he's got shoulders like a brick shithouse.
[00:54:49] They show a close enough look of him.
[00:54:52] You know it's Vince Vaughn.
[00:54:54] So right away,
[00:54:55] the mystery of if it's his mother or if it's Tony Perkins,
[00:54:58] it's already ruined.
[00:55:00] You know this isn't his mom.
[00:55:03] It's these little things that changes the characters
[00:55:06] and gives away things that we aren't or shouldn't be ready for
[00:55:10] as this film continues to progress.
[00:55:12] On top of that,
[00:55:13] when the detective played by William H. Macy is killed,
[00:55:17] again,
[00:55:18] he throws in some subliminal messages,
[00:55:20] which add nothing to the movie,
[00:55:22] and again destroys the original feel and attitude.
[00:55:25] And again,
[00:55:25] we get Julianne Moore sneaks up to the place.
[00:55:30] Van Zandt again takes her to find porno magazines.
[00:55:34] Yeah.
[00:55:35] Instead of the original,
[00:55:36] where she just found hard covered books,
[00:55:39] like encyclopedias or classic literature.
[00:55:42] These small things make a different vision from the original.
[00:55:47] Small changes,
[00:55:48] that is again,
[00:55:49] you want to give a middle finger.
[00:55:51] Do not change these things.
[00:55:54] Also,
[00:55:54] casting in Van Zandt's version,
[00:55:57] we have casted Vince Vaughn,
[00:55:59] who is like six feet plus tall,
[00:56:01] and Viggo Mortensen is being towered over by him,
[00:56:04] whereas in the original,
[00:56:05] it's reversed.
[00:56:06] Tony Perkins is meek and mild,
[00:56:08] and more petite compared to Sam Garvin from the original.
[00:56:12] What Hitchcock did in this original was a perfect film.
[00:56:16] Every shot is perfect.
[00:56:17] Every scene is perfect.
[00:56:19] Yep.
[00:56:19] Every performance is perfect.
[00:56:21] And it took a seemingly normal,
[00:56:25] but quiet and unassuming character in Tony Perkins,
[00:56:28] and brought us to surprise and shock,
[00:56:31] at a time in history,
[00:56:32] that today it still holds perfect.
[00:56:35] When you rewatch Psycho today,
[00:56:39] the original.
[00:56:40] The original.
[00:56:41] In the remake,
[00:56:41] as much as a lot of the shooting was like shot for shot,
[00:56:45] like you already said,
[00:56:46] but all these small things that maybe Van Zandt wanted to create his own feel for the film,
[00:56:52] brought me to a place that was not the original.
[00:56:55] It just made me angry.
[00:56:56] Changed my view of Norman Bates,
[00:56:58] and as I saw way too many times in this,
[00:57:01] is probably the worst version that this could possibly have been.
[00:57:05] Do not ever remake perfect films.
[00:57:08] Yeah.
[00:57:08] That is a rule that has to happen.
[00:57:10] If anybody freaking goes back and changes anything of Orson Welles' films,
[00:57:16] like you're just doing a travesty of justice.
[00:57:18] Yeah, this is just total exploitive garbage.
[00:57:20] This was not needed,
[00:57:21] and I can't watch it without comparing it to the original,
[00:57:24] and I actually did start watching this to watch it shot for shot.
[00:57:28] On my TV,
[00:57:29] and as soon as it started going off the rails,
[00:57:32] I went,
[00:57:33] I can't even watch this.
[00:57:34] So I watched the crap version,
[00:57:36] and then I watched the original version,
[00:57:37] and I went,
[00:57:38] oh my God.
[00:57:38] Like,
[00:57:39] it's so,
[00:57:40] so,
[00:57:41] so horrible.
[00:57:42] It's awful.
[00:57:44] It's so awful.
[00:57:45] And I,
[00:57:45] yeah,
[00:57:46] I don't know.
[00:57:47] As I say,
[00:57:47] I watched this,
[00:57:49] however long ago,
[00:57:50] what was it?
[00:57:50] 26 years ago or something?
[00:57:52] It was 1999.
[00:57:53] You saw it in cinemas probably.
[00:57:54] 25 years ago,
[00:57:54] yeah.
[00:57:55] And for some reason,
[00:57:56] I was amused by it back then,
[00:57:58] but.
[00:57:59] Well,
[00:57:59] again,
[00:57:59] you probably weren't as knowledgeable.
[00:58:01] But I also,
[00:58:02] I also probably hadn't watched Psycho in,
[00:58:06] I don't know how long.
[00:58:07] I probably watched it when I was about 15.
[00:58:09] Did you re-watch it again for this one again?
[00:58:11] No,
[00:58:12] I didn't.
[00:58:12] Oh,
[00:58:12] okay.
[00:58:12] But everything,
[00:58:14] everything.
[00:58:14] You gotta wash that taste out of your mouth.
[00:58:16] Well,
[00:58:16] the thing is,
[00:58:17] I mean,
[00:58:17] I've watched Psycho probably in the last two years though.
[00:58:20] So,
[00:58:21] I,
[00:58:21] yeah,
[00:58:22] it's,
[00:58:22] I mean,
[00:58:24] there's so many glaringly obvious differences where it's like,
[00:58:27] this is,
[00:58:27] this isn't a middle finger to the studios.
[00:58:29] This is just,
[00:58:29] this is just bad.
[00:58:31] This is just fricking bad.
[00:58:34] Like,
[00:58:34] dude,
[00:58:35] why,
[00:58:35] why?
[00:58:36] Like he made just bizarre choices.
[00:58:39] It just makes no sense.
[00:58:41] He's,
[00:58:41] and yeah,
[00:58:42] the way he,
[00:58:43] you,
[00:58:43] you don't change Norman Bates' character into some sexual deviant.
[00:58:47] It's like,
[00:58:47] what is going on?
[00:58:48] That's just literally,
[00:58:50] the reason why it's on everybody's,
[00:58:51] one of everybody's lists of worst movies ever.
[00:58:55] Worst remakes anyway.
[00:58:56] All right,
[00:58:56] you get a choice there,
[00:58:57] little buckaroo.
[00:58:58] You've got the myrrh,
[00:59:00] you've got me,
[00:59:00] you've got,
[00:59:01] you've got our dare bag,
[00:59:03] and,
[00:59:04] Casey's bag looks pretty full.
[00:59:05] Casey's bag also looks full.
[00:59:07] So,
[00:59:08] what do you feel like?
[00:59:09] Where's my bag,
[00:59:10] by the way?
[00:59:10] Oh,
[00:59:11] you don't have one.
[00:59:12] That's right.
[00:59:13] Not that I could choose out of it.
[00:59:14] I'm going to get that sucker ready here real quick.
[00:59:16] Yeah,
[00:59:17] you should probably take it.
[00:59:17] Because I'm kind of,
[00:59:18] I'm hoping you pull El Conte,
[00:59:20] because I really want to talk about it.
[00:59:21] All right,
[00:59:21] so I am pulling out of Jim's bag,
[00:59:25] and what am I getting?
[00:59:27] I got only choose one.
[00:59:29] I'd like to choose more,
[00:59:30] because I know they're all going to be actually pretty good.
[00:59:32] Jim has no idea what I like and what I don't.
[00:59:35] He thinks he likes.
[00:59:36] That's right.
[00:59:36] I mean,
[00:59:37] I thought you said you liked Psycho,
[00:59:40] the remake.
[00:59:41] And I did not.
[00:59:43] I did not.
[00:59:44] I don't even think this is a movie,
[00:59:45] so can I choose again?
[00:59:47] Nope.
[00:59:48] What is it?
[00:59:48] It's Bachelorette from 2012.
[00:59:52] Yeah,
[00:59:52] I'm pretty sure it is.
[00:59:54] I don't think that's a movie.
[00:59:55] I think it is.
[00:59:57] From which year?
[00:59:59] 2012.
[01:00:01] 2012.
[01:00:03] Are you all ready for this?
[01:00:07] It's Kristen Dunst.
[01:00:09] Yes.
[01:00:10] Yeah,
[01:00:10] that sounds about right.
[01:00:12] Okay,
[01:00:13] well,
[01:00:14] it's a pro.
[01:00:14] You love Kristen Dunst.
[01:00:17] Is it a wrong movie?
[01:00:19] I wouldn't say I love Kristen Dunst.
[01:00:21] Hey,
[01:00:21] it's got Isla Fisher in it.
[01:00:22] She's always funny.
[01:00:23] That's perfect.
[01:00:24] She was great in Wedding Crashers.
[01:00:26] Nice.
[01:00:28] I can't wait to hear you talk about Batman.
[01:00:31] Hey,
[01:00:31] it's got James Marsden in it.
[01:00:33] I'm in.
[01:00:34] There you go.
[01:00:35] Well,
[01:00:35] now that you like James Marsden movies.
[01:00:38] Well,
[01:00:39] they're all awful,
[01:00:39] but they can't all be awful.
[01:00:42] Okay,
[01:00:42] this is interesting.
[01:00:44] A little fun fact.
[01:00:45] It's got Adam Scott.
[01:00:46] I recently watched Now You See Me 2,
[01:00:48] because again,
[01:00:49] I don't know.
[01:00:49] Will Ferrell was a producer?
[01:00:50] And Isla Fisher and Lizzie Kaplan
[01:00:52] are both in this.
[01:00:53] And they were both in Now You See Me movies.
[01:00:55] There you go.
[01:00:56] Lizzie Kaplan.
[01:00:56] Maybe this is like,
[01:00:58] she actually replaced Isla Fisher.
[01:01:00] Maybe this is going to be
[01:01:01] Now You See Me,
[01:01:02] the prequel.
[01:01:04] I believe.
[01:01:04] Oh,
[01:01:05] it looks like Rebel Wilson's in it too.
[01:01:06] There you go.
[01:01:07] I believe this is going to be.
[01:01:08] I think this is going to be good.
[01:01:09] I can't wait till you see it.
[01:01:11] I,
[01:01:12] and I,
[01:01:12] and I'm,
[01:01:13] this is one of those ones
[01:01:14] that I have never seen.
[01:01:15] So I'm.
[01:01:15] And I saw it in cinemas.
[01:01:17] I am truly looking forward.
[01:01:18] I've been holding onto this
[01:01:19] for a few years.
[01:01:20] So Jim,
[01:01:21] thank you.
[01:01:22] You're very welcome.
[01:01:23] In advance.
[01:01:23] I am looking forward
[01:01:25] to Bachelorette from 2012.
[01:01:27] Bachelorette number one.
[01:01:28] Starring Miss Kirsten Dunst.
[01:01:29] That's right.
[01:01:30] Also known as
[01:01:32] Bridesmaids,
[01:01:33] the sequel.
[01:01:33] That's right.
[01:01:35] I mean,
[01:01:36] the prequel.
[01:01:37] All right.
[01:01:38] Wow.
