Episode 663: Review of Jilly from Philly

[00:00:41] So Friday is Review Day, where I talk about my experience at an event, a place, a TV show, or even a book. And today, I wanted to talk about an experience that I had at a place. First time at both, and that experience

[00:01:19] was the Jill Scott experience. Now I've seen Jill a few times in the past. More recently, two years ago. And it was still fresh in my mind because she's just magical. Just magical. She doesn't do all the dancing and everything like everyone else does, but her words, the message that she leaves with you.

[00:01:52] She talks with you. She doesn't just belt out songs. She leaves you with message. She talks to you in between songs. And it's just a beautiful, the whole, everyone is in a, it feels like you're with family.

[00:02:09] Because everyone, the vibe, you can feel the energy. It's just a beautiful thing. I'm telling you, it's nothing like going to one of her shows. It's just, oh my goodness. It leaves you just in such a good space.

[00:02:28] So, she was in Los Angeles for two nights. And when her tickets came out, they were very reasonable. Reasonable to me for a ticket is under $75.

[00:02:43] Now, she was at a small venue, of course, intimate, which I prefer. If I just went to intimate venues the rest of my life, I would be okay. Because these stadium shows, it's just too much. You always hear so many bad stories about parking and security and the long lines and everything else.

[00:03:06] Never had a problem with a small venue. Well, except when I went to see Mary Jane and there was no air, but that's different. That's a rare occasion. So, she did two nights. And I didn't get my ticket until the day of. That's what I've been doing this year, waiting until the day of to see my mood. Because my vibe has changed with events.

[00:03:32] I like going to events, but I also like seeing how I feel that day. Because you may not want to go. You may feel differently. You may be too tired.

[00:03:42] Okay, so I got my ticket day one of her show around lunchtime. And at that time, the prices started at $28, right? Last time you paid $28 for a show, a good show. You pay that to get into the movies with refreshments, right?

[00:04:09] Okay. So, first, let me say, I didn't know. Well, I've been to her show before. So, I didn't know. I kind of knew what to expect. I knew I was going to get a good time. But I didn't see any clips from it. So, I didn't know any of that.

[00:04:26] That day that I went was, I didn't have much to do. I decided against going out to eat. I was going to go to happy hour. I decided against it. I took a quick nap.

[00:04:42] And by the time I got there, I wound up being late. I took the metro there. Because driving at concerts, especially in LA, is just blasphemous. You need to get a ride of some sort. Be it a ride share or take the train.

[00:05:06] So, things were just running slow that day. I don't know what was going on. So, I wound up being late, which is, I hate being late. The show was supposed to start at 8. I get there. It was a little after 8. And for her shows, she requested that her phones be put away.

[00:05:31] So, if you don't, if you can't be without your phone, then I get it. You may want to record and take your pics, but you won't be doing it there.

[00:06:05] So, and I'm okay with that. Okay, so that process wasn't hard. But getting something to eat, they have food trucks lined up. There were four food trucks. Long lines. Right? Worst part. And none of them had prices on it. And there was no price, from my experience, on anything. Especially, you know, especially when you go into stores, there's no price on it. That means you're going to pay a pretty penny.

[00:06:35] Now, all I got were fries and a bottle of water. That was $18. So, yeah. L.A. prices, I'm like, that was a food truck. You know, food trucks are usually reasonable. So, anyway. Get into the place. Nice venue. Small venue.

[00:07:05] Very nice. Looked modern. Everything was outside. They had another place. To get something to eat. There was a station to take your pictures with the backdrop. There was another station to get your merch. I didn't price it. Couldn't tell you how much your stuff's going for. Wasn't getting it anyway. Because I'm a street vendor girly. Anyway. Getting up the stairs to where I was sitting. Wasn't hard at all. They did have escalators.

[00:07:35] The escalators. Signage was great. I didn't really see it. I mean. I guess there were ushers. I didn't need one. Yeah, there were. There were. Because they helped. By the time the show started, it was nine. And that was perfect, believe it or not. Because it took a while for people to get in. I guess everyone was running late for some reason. So I felt right at home. Started at nine.

[00:08:04] And the stage was set up just so nice. It was. There were boxes with words on them. And there were her background singers. Three men. The name escapes me. What they were called. Because she gave them a time to shine.

[00:08:34] And she comes out. Black dress. Big hat with the veil. And what was cool about it. She had numerous changes to her head wear. Because I believe her natural hair is short. But she changed wigs. She changed hats. Glasses. On stage. In a corner. With a mirror right there.

[00:09:03] And it was just cool. I don't know. It was just. Everything was just. Nice flow. And then the crowd was. There was no smoking. There was no vaping. No crazy. No twerking. Well, none of her songs give you that vibe. But her first few songs were newer.

[00:09:31] And then she started singing stuff from the archives. Her. Off her first album. And she got more crowd participation. A few people get on their feet. We were mainly in our chairs. And the seats were comfy too. Oh my goodness. Those were some of the most comfortable seats. Great cushion. There were cup holders. It wasn't too cold in there. It was just a great vibe.

[00:10:00] It's like we were. We knew each other. We. We were. Talking is a little bit. There were no great gaps. Because she brought her son out. To perform with her. On one song. He rapped. And. She gave. Each of the musicians. Their moment. And she talked in between. She talked about. Her love life. And how she had to get rid of certain.

[00:10:30] People in her life. Toxic people. And. And. She talked about. How it is when you're in love. And then. How you think you're in love. But it's really toxic love. And. She talked about the boxes. That you need to leave on your porch. Which were some of the boxes. Toxic love. And just all. Negative stuff. Were written on those boxes. And then. The videos. Were videos of. Just.

[00:11:00] They gave like an old school vibe. Of videos. And. How it was just. Philly vibes. All night. Love. All night. She smiled. The whole time. That's one thing about her. She smiles. The whole time. When she's performing. And it makes you smile. Because her smile. Is infectious. Beautiful teeth too. But. Yes. If you get a chance. To see.
