This episode is based on a thread I saw about someone who asked a friend to pick her and her kid up from an airport at midnight. Would you be a friend and pick her up? Was she a bad friend to expect her to do it since she would?

[00:00:17] Greetings and welcome to Drea’s Point of View. I am your hostess, Dreya, and in the next 10 minutes or less, I will be offering you my perspective on a topic that I feel passionate about. So please make sure that you are following along at Drea’s Point of View on IG, Facebook,
[00:00:33] and Threads, as well as Drea’s Point of View on IG. So this episode comes from a post that I recently read on the platform threads, which has become my favorite platform. There was a woman who
[00:01:03] needed an airport pickup. Her flight got in at midnight. She asked a reliable friend, or a close friend from my understanding. She was with her kid. And he said it was basically too late for her on a school night, so she wound up having to pay $70. And there may have been something else that was said, but that's the gist of it. And she asked, was she wrong?
[00:01:32] And the flood of comments made me create this episode about airport pickups, about expectations from people. Now, she wasn't wrong for asking a friend. All she could say is yes or no, right? No matter how close they were. But I just think asking someone to do something after midnight,
[00:02:00] unless it's an emergency, is egregious. That's really insane, because the average person tends to be a morning person. And during the week, they got to go to work. I mean, and I believe the ride was 30 minutes away. So even though she had her child with her, I mean, $70 is no drop in a bucket either.
[00:02:26] I've paid my share of rides. As someone who travels often and takes public transportation to and from the airport when I can, it's in the airport, home airport or not, I have yet to ask anyone to pick me up any time of the day. I just don't like waiting on anyone. I like having my own way, getting there, get there. I may not really want to talk to someone.
[00:02:56] As soon as I land, I'm tired. I really don't want to talk to anyone. That's just my thing. I can count on one hand and subtract a few fingers of people that pick me up from the airport. Anyway, the last time I asked someone to pick me up from the airport, I had a doctor's appointment and I needed to have a procedure where someone had to be there for me.
[00:03:21] You know, when you were put under, someone has to pick you up. The ladies were tired. It was during the day. She did it, but I hated that she was my only option. But, yes. So, me asking anyone to pick me up at midnight.
[00:03:44] Now, I would do it. I would do it because I'm a night owl. Traffic's going to be good. I would do it. Kid or not. Okay? But everyone was coming down hard on this woman for asking her friend. And they were, got into the whole thing about, aside from being an airport pickup, because we know how that, major airports anyway. I don't know what airport it was from.
[00:04:15] But, you know, midnight during the week, I mean, they were like, oh, well, she should have, you know, not relied on somebody. Everybody's expectations are different. Everyone's plans are different. We get that. We know people have things going on. We get that. Like I said, all she could do was ask, but I guess she had the expectation that her friend would do it because she would do it or she would do something for her.
[00:04:36] Okay. Well, that's one thing. Friendships don't be 50-50 than somebody else. Hopefully she doesn't break up with that friend over this. I didn't follow up with that. But there were other comments after that. And I said, I don't think she was wrong. I don't think either one was wrong. She wasn't wrong. We're saying no.
[00:05:07] She just couldn't do it for whatever reason. But there are people that would do it. That's the thing. I know one person commented saying that she would pick up people from LAX if someone was coming, you know, not a problem for her. That's a different type of love. If you've ever been to Los Angeles airport, that's a different type of love. Unless, you know, parking and waiting to be picked up from any airport, but especially that one.
[00:05:35] Now, I've done airport pickups before. Not at midnight, but I've done it. If I'm off, absolutely. Why not? That's what friends do. Like I said, I don't know. I'm different than most. Like, as long as I know in advance, being a night owl, yes, not a problem.
[00:06:02] But expectations from other people, you know, I've learned to start keeping my expectations low with people, not to expect much. And then maybe you'll be surprised. But, yeah, there was just a whole, it just went down a whole other path, her post. I didn't expect people to still be talking about it a day or two after the fact.
[00:06:26] I said, you know what, let me do an episode about this and try to get my listeners' views on it. Was she wrong for asking that and expecting that? Was her friend wrong for saying no? Should she have picked her up? Would you pick it up? How do you feel about airport pickups? Do you think people should fend for themselves? At midnight of all times, because that's what it was. Have you ever offered to pick someone up? If someone were staying with you, absolutely.
[00:06:54] If it's not too far out, I've had people who didn't even come see me. Like, say if I were coming in town for work and wanted to see them, haven't seen them in years, and I was too far for them. You know, so we never saw one another. So, yeah.
[00:07:21] I mean, I don't really get it. I get that. You know, like I said, midnight is a stretch for most people. And I believe it was on a school night. I definitely, I get that. You know, if she was stranded, that were one thing. But, yeah, I see all sides to it. But I don't think she was wrong for asking, but wrong for getting upset, having to pay $70.
[00:07:50] I mean, then people are saying, well, you know, she can afford to go out of town and such. She should have definitely planned a way home. So, I'd love to hear your thoughts. It's an interesting topic. How do you feel about airport pickups? Would you have or would you pick someone up at midnight? What say you?
