[00:00:42] Like many, I am not a fan of the dentist.
[00:00:46] Yeah, I didn't mind so much as a kid because I remember the sucker I got afterwards. Plus, I love my hygienist.
[00:00:54] I recently came across an article from huffpost.com. That should be of interest to those of you who aren't a fan of the dentist either.
[00:01:01] It's a great year entitled, What Dentist can Tell About You Just by Looking in Your Mouth by Caroline Bologna.
[00:01:08] And I'd like to share some of those things with you.
[00:01:14] Welcome to Dreas Point of View. I am your host, Andrea.
[00:01:17] And I would love to invite you to follow the show at Dreas Point of View on IG, Pinterest, Facebook and threads.

[00:01:29] The first thing they can tell is if you floss on the regular.
[00:01:34] If your gums are inflamed or red, then they know you aren't doing it often.
[00:01:40] Healthy gums are pink.
[00:01:44] The next thing the dentist can tell is if you have diabetes.
[00:01:48] Your gums are bleeding and sensitive.
[00:01:51] Also having fruity breath is a sign of diabetes that is uncontrolled.
[00:01:56] If you're lacking in vitamins and minerals, you may experience cracked lips, bone infections and gums that bleed easily.
[00:02:07] Dentist can tell if you're right or left handed.
[00:02:10] Left handed patients don't brush their upper left teeth as good as their right and vice versa.
[00:02:16] This leaves the gums more puffy with more plaque retention.
[00:02:21] People with eating disorders show enamel erosion.
[00:02:26] Dentist can tell if you have early signs of cancer.
[00:02:30] If there are oral lesions, gum overgrowth, changes in your bite or bleeding in your mouth, you can have a form of cancer.
[00:02:41] Did you know that your dentist can tell if you're pregnant?
[00:02:44] There is a deep red lump on your gums.
[00:02:47] It may also lead to gingivitis.
[00:02:51] Teeth grinding and red gums can show a sign of stress or sleep issues.
[00:02:57] They show that you're having stress issues as well.
[00:03:03] Your dentist can tell if you've been drinking a lot.
[00:03:06] If you have a dry mouth and have inflamed gums, then you are a heavy drinker.
[00:03:13] Using tobacco products can cause gum disease and a higher risk of oral cancers.
[00:03:20] He or she may even be able to tell if you have HIV by identifying certain lesions called Kaposi's sarcoma.
[00:03:29] Hopefully this list can make you more diligent in taking care of your oral health and getting more checkups.
[00:03:39] I do have a positive news story for you today.
[00:03:44] And it comes from the UK.
[00:03:47] Paul Spears, a street cleaner from southeast London, he'd only been to...
[00:03:59] He'd only been abroad once in his life to Portugal.
[00:04:03] He recently mentioned going again to see a local real estate agent.
[00:04:09] So that real estate agent, Lisa Knight, created a GoFundMe account to help him.
[00:04:14] That fundraiser raised the 3,000 pounds that he needed for his trip.
[00:04:22] However, his employer said that he couldn't accept those funds.
[00:04:26] The rules prohibit staff from accepting monetary gifts beyond their salary. Isn't that crazy?
[00:04:32] The decision upset the local community.
[00:04:35] So a travel agent creatively launched a competition tailored to him which he won, which allowed him to take the trip.
[00:04:43] The fundraisers proceeds will now go to Cancer Research UK, his chosen charity.
[00:04:53] He was also recognized with an internal financial reward to recognize his hard work and dedication.
[00:05:07] Pretty interesting.
