[00:00:00] What's the most exciting and most watched sport in the United States?

[00:00:11] If you said anything else but football, you lose.

[00:00:19] Welcome to the Air Raid Attack Podcast.

[00:00:23] Nothing's more exciting than college or pro football.

[00:00:27] And when we say football, we don't mean soccer.

[00:00:34] Oh, no.

[00:00:39] We'll hang, we'll give you in-depth analysis and you know what, football and life have a

[00:00:45] lot in common.

[00:00:46] So you'll hear us tackle life topics sometimes too.

[00:00:49] Ready?

[00:00:50] So let's do it.

[00:00:51] This is the Air Raid Attack Podcast.

[00:00:54] And this is your host, Air Raid Mike.

[00:01:11] What is up ladies and gentlemen?

[00:01:13] You're truly Air Raid Mike, the host of the unscripted, unfiltered 100% authentic podcast,

[00:01:22] the Air Raid Attack.

[00:01:24] And we have a fun show for you as I am slowly getting ready to balance two phones here.

[00:01:32] We have a fun show for you right ahead.

[00:01:35] First things first, the NFL draft is coming up which means all you football fans and lovers

[00:01:42] out there, we will actually do a live draft coverage of the first round.

[00:01:51] Never done that.

[00:01:52] And then we'll see how that's going to look.

[00:01:53] Probably only going to be live streamed.

[00:01:55] Will it be actually podcasted out and you can listen to it depends on probably how it

[00:02:00] goes, especially with the Denver Broncos.

[00:02:02] So we'll see how that goes.

[00:02:05] But nonetheless, I have a absolutely honorable and phenomenal person coming on the show

[00:02:13] today.

[00:02:15] Got the privilege of talking throughout conversation and passed probably a month and a half or

[00:02:19] so.

[00:02:21] And one of the biggest fans of the podcast, not only is he a husband and a father, but

[00:02:27] more importantly, he's a believer.

[00:02:28] He is the athletic director and the head football coach.

[00:02:33] He's a two-time national champion.

[00:02:36] And let's welcome in new Bronflens, new Bronfills Christian Academy Athletic Director

[00:02:43] and head coach.

[00:02:46] And the only, the legend himself, Coach Bronk.

[00:02:51] Coach first things first, welcome on the show and I am honored to have you on.

[00:02:58] Hey, Mike, how are you doing, man?

[00:03:01] Hey, I'm doing well, coach.

[00:03:03] Hey, I'm honored.

[00:03:05] I feel like I'm in the presence of greatness in your presence.

[00:03:10] But, you know, truthfully, I'm glad to have you on.

[00:03:16] I'm looking forward to talking some football, but life and faith as well because in the end,

[00:03:24] it's just a game.

[00:03:25] Yeah, I don't know about that greatness thing.

[00:03:28] I'm just a dude who coaches a little high school football in Texas.

[00:03:32] There are plenty of other guys in this game who have accomplished way more than me

[00:03:38] that you could probably have on, but I'm honored to be on.

[00:03:42] And I apologize to everybody who's listened to this, who have to put up with me tonight.

[00:03:47] And I'm also driving home.

[00:03:49] So if I do cut out, because I'm driving through the Hill Country of Texas right now

[00:03:56] on my way home.

[00:03:57] So if I cut out it, I'll be right back.

[00:04:00] So you are perfectly fine, coach.

[00:04:04] My first things first, safety always.

[00:04:05] So definitely, you know, I would like to have you have you head home safely to your

[00:04:12] wife and family.

[00:04:13] And definitely want to keep you safe.

[00:04:17] And, you know, I'm over here.

[00:04:19] I just had two work calls leading up to it.

[00:04:22] So hopefully knock on wood that will stay quiet throughout the show.

[00:04:27] But nonetheless, I think we should be good from here though.

[00:04:33] Nonetheless, tell the listeners a little about yourself, coach.

[00:04:37] And as you head into, as we mentioned off there,

[00:04:41] is heading to spring practice.

[00:04:43] Yeah.

[00:04:44] Well, I mean, in my 28th year of doing this,

[00:04:48] you know, been blessed to do this career.

[00:04:52] You know, it was funny because this wasn't my original path.

[00:04:56] I was when I first got into college,

[00:04:59] I was planning on going to Wall Street making money, you know,

[00:05:03] and not get into education and get into coaching.

[00:05:06] And, you know, I had a buddy of mine who was coaching some baseball at a private school in Austin.

[00:05:15] And he asked me if I wanted to help him out, coach a little JV baseball

[00:05:20] and kind of got bit by the bug and helped him out.

[00:05:25] And next thing you know, I'm like, hey, you know, this is kind of fun.

[00:05:29] And next thing you know, I'm changing majors and, you know,

[00:05:34] now instead of graduating in four years, I'm graduating in 10 years.

[00:05:38] And I'm, you know, I'm taking every conceivable path to, you know, in college.

[00:05:43] I mean, I was definitely not your traditional college student.

[00:05:47] I did probably everything wrong when it came to doing this.

[00:05:51] And I mean, I'm, but I got there.

[00:05:55] And, you know, I started my career out coaching in private school, spent time coaching in public school.

[00:06:03] I've coached a minor league professional.

[00:06:06] I've coached in college.

[00:06:08] I've coached every conceivable form of football from six man to 11 man.

[00:06:14] And public private, like I said, public private professional college ball.

[00:06:18] I love the game of football.

[00:06:22] And I've been blessed to make a career out of it.

[00:06:26] And, you know, I'm at New Braunfels Christian Academy where I serve as the athletic director

[00:06:30] and head football coach.

[00:06:31] I'm completing my third year there now.

[00:06:34] And I absolutely love what I do.

[00:06:38] I'm a wildcat.

[00:06:39] And as far as I'm concerned, I found my home where I hope to retire as long as

[00:06:45] I don't screw anything up here.

[00:06:46] And they have me and they have me for the rest of my career here.

[00:06:56] And, you know, we've got a lot of great things going on here.

[00:06:59] We're in the midst of, you know, at the end of July, early part of August,

[00:07:05] we're going to be completing a pretty significant capital campaign.

[00:07:09] We're having a brand new athletic complex, field house, football soccer field with

[00:07:15] eight lane track completed, just over $11 million in completion.

[00:07:22] And I mean, it's a, we got a lot of incredible things going on at our school.

[00:07:28] And we're building a brand new academic wing as well.

[00:07:34] You know, that'll be beginning as well this summer.

[00:07:37] And we're really excited about the things that are going on and our school has

[00:07:41] has grown significantly in the three years that I've been here.

[00:07:45] And, you know, the Lord's blessed us and continues to bless our school.

[00:07:50] And I'm excited about what we got going on and at MBS.

[00:07:57] Well, and that was the first, you know, kind of leading to it is the new athletic building.

[00:08:04] I don't know if we can get into it, but I'm sure, you know, when it comes to

[00:08:09] football, first off, we got to the state of Texas.

[00:08:15] A lot of people treated as a religion and same in Oklahoma.

[00:08:20] It's pretty fascinating how far people take high school football.

[00:08:24] But just I can just imagine in your position how exciting this is not just for you and

[00:08:32] I'm sure the coaches, but I'm sure for the players as well and the school.

[00:08:36] Oh, our, yeah, I mean, our players, our players, our families, our community,

[00:08:43] they are incredibly excited to watch the just the building, the process alone.

[00:08:52] I've stopped going out every day to watch it.

[00:08:55] I used to go out there every morning just to see what's been done.

[00:08:58] And I stopped doing that because, you know, I was like, well, nothing's getting done.

[00:09:03] And even though things were getting done, it just all looked the same.

[00:09:15] Softball field is our own, our own administrative assistant is standing next to me at Softball

[00:09:23] game. I elbow her and I said, Hey, look, we've got windows and a door in the fieldhouse now.

[00:09:31] You know, so we've got, we've got walls.

[00:09:33] You know, and so it's just, you know, just a little thing.

[00:09:35] We got a wall and we got a retaining wall.

[00:09:37] We got a fence, you know, just, just things, the progress that are being made.

[00:09:41] And it's just exciting to watch and our kids go out there as they're, you know,

[00:09:46] as they're training on the current grass field, you know, kids are going out,

[00:09:50] our track team goes out there and they're training on the grass field and just

[00:09:55] just to watch their body languages.

[00:09:58] They're watching this progress and they're like, wow, you know, this is incredible.

[00:10:02] And then to listen to our families talk about this whole thing in this project.

[00:10:07] And they're like, this is really happening.

[00:10:09] I said, yeah, I mean, when we hit the field, when we, when we report August 5th,

[00:10:14] the first day of camp, this is happening.

[00:10:17] Wow.

[00:10:17] You know, this is real.

[00:10:18] You know, this is real.

[00:10:20] And this is, this is really, really happening.

[00:10:25] That's amazing in itself just strictly because football for our football fans.

[00:10:35] Right.

[00:10:36] You know, for our football fans, I'm excited for our soccer program, you know, to be on a,

[00:10:40] on a full-sized soccer field and for our track program.

[00:10:44] I mean, it just takes our athletic program to the whole other level.

[00:10:50] Well, and that's exciting just to hear, especially, you know,

[00:10:54] from just a program itself, because stuff like that, a lot of these kids, you know,

[00:10:59] and I'm not saying anything towards your program or anything like that.

[00:11:03] I mean, you know, where I went to school at it was, you know, we were lucky we could win two games

[00:11:08] and one of them was against the deaf school.

[00:11:10] So, you know, it was neither, you know, they're now they're one of,

[00:11:15] you know, phenomenal, you know, eight-man programs in the state.

[00:11:20] But, you know, going back to that is, it's a little things that to allow these players that

[00:11:28] get to experience that because a lot of them may or may not play in, you know, college football

[00:11:32] just doesn't matter what level and a lot of that stuff you see and those levels,

[00:11:36] you don't see that much in high school.

[00:11:38] So I'm sure to the players in itself this is, you know,

[00:11:41] this is something special for them for the lifetime.

[00:11:44] Oh, no doubt. I mean, just the, you know, for the brand new scoreboard,

[00:11:54] video board that we're going to have the turf field

[00:12:01] you know, because right now, you know, we had like, you know, standard bleachers,

[00:12:06] but you know, our families would show up and they'd put, you know, lawn chairs out on,

[00:12:12] you know, and sit in lawn chairs.

[00:12:14] We didn't have actual, you know, stand stands where, you know, bleachers like normally would

[00:12:18] have it a stadium, they didn't have an actual stadium.

[00:12:21] You know, we had a field that people just would bring lawn chairs and sit in.

[00:12:26] And so just the whole dynamic of a stadium being in a stadium,

[00:12:31] it just changes the whole dynamic and approach of what it's going to feel like on Friday night

[00:12:38] for these kids. And it's just going to, you know, I'm just excited for the boys.

[00:12:44] It's just going to change the whole shape of our program, the whole dynamic of our program.

[00:12:52] Now if you don't mind me asking, because I'm curious, when's the home opener for you guys this year?

[00:12:59] The whole, that's a great question because it's funny because week three is our home opener.

[00:13:07] It's funny because I did that on purpose just in case, you know, you just never know when,

[00:13:13] you know, mother nature in the springtime comes calling.

[00:13:18] You never know if she wants to delay things. So what I did,

[00:13:25] what I did is, you know, we open up on the road against Austin Achieve

[00:13:29] and then we have a return, we actually, and it just kind of works out perfectly because

[00:13:32] we did have a return visit to Austin Achieve from this past year. And then we have a return

[00:13:38] trip to Tyler, Tyler Texas to play Bishop Gorman. And so what I did is, you know, we're in the

[00:13:44] first year of our new realignment, I got with both those schools and I said, hey, how about this?

[00:13:50] We're opening up our new stadium but I want to make sure that it's everything is ready to go.

[00:13:56] So how about we play both of y'all week one and two just to make sure everything is ready

[00:14:02] and we will not, we're going to open up our new stadium in week three versus McDade ISD,

[00:14:08] which is a brand new 11-man program. They're coming up from Six Man. Oh wow. And so our week

[00:14:14] three game against McDade High School, which is a UIL 2A school here in Texas,

[00:14:21] will be our home opener and we're excited by that.

[00:14:26] So what I'll do is I'll tend to we keep an eye on that schedule then.

[00:14:31] Yeah. And we will be posting that schedule here pretty soon. We will have our social media

[00:14:39] reveal of our actual schedule coming up. We do have, what's really cool is we do have a game

[00:14:46] this season. It's on Thursday, October 10th. It's a district game against Geneva School of

[00:14:55] Bernie and it's a televised game. Wow. Yeah, it's a televised home game for us. So we're really

[00:15:01] excited by that. You know, again it's going to get to showcase our brand new stadium and

[00:15:07] our facilities and our school. So we're really excited by that.

[00:15:13] I know you mentioned earlier, coaching Six Man. What's, and I've played eight so I,

[00:15:20] you know, I have the extra two players. I get the smaller ball

[00:15:24] feel. What was it like coaching Six Man compared to obviously the normal 11 that we

[00:15:31] have on a weekly basis? Yeah. Well, Six Man, if you're an offensive minded guy,

[00:15:36] like I am Six Man is like the greatest thing ever. Absolutely. You know, because it's all

[00:15:42] about offensive football. I mean, it's just, I mean, when I coach Six Man, you know, it was,

[00:15:49] it was just offense, offense, offense, defense. You know, I used to tell my defensive

[00:15:53] coordinators, listen, you're going to give up points. So just relax. All I need is one stop

[00:16:00] a quarter. If you give me one stop a quarter, we're going to be fine. I had a guy who worked

[00:16:06] for me who was an 11 man defensive coordinator. I hired him away from public school.

[00:16:12] Hired him to be a Six Man defense coordinator. He came in and I thought this man was going to have

[00:16:18] a heart attack his first season because, you know, we're giving up 60 points a game and we're,

[00:16:25] you know, we're winning games. We're averaging 80 points a game and he's giving up 60 and

[00:16:30] every game he's apologizing. Coach, I'm sorry. I'm like, why? Why? Why are you apologizing?

[00:16:35] Because coach, we gave up 60. I said, how many we score? He goes, how many we score? He

[00:16:40] goes 80. I said, we won. Coach, I said, this is Six Man. I said, this game is set up for you to

[00:16:45] fail. Oh, absolutely. I mean, I said everything is set up for you to fail. I said, just relax, man.

[00:16:52] I said, we're fine. I said, we are fine and we won our first ever district championship

[00:16:59] in the school we were at and we won the game 90 to 88. Oh my goodness. And the funniest thing

[00:17:09] ever is we, I'm on the film and we were laughing at the next morning when we were watching as a

[00:17:15] coaching staff and my defense coordinator with as a clock is ticking down, everybody's celebrating

[00:17:21] except for him. And he's off on the side bent over with his hands on his knees and literally,

[00:17:27] I didn't know if he was vomiting or if he was having a heart attack. And you know,

[00:17:33] it's just because he just gave up 88 points and the man was just like, he's like, I've never had

[00:17:39] anything like this before in my life. And it was just one of those years. We go eight and two

[00:17:45] in the regular season and win a district championship for the first time in school history.

[00:17:51] But that's just, it's just the greatest show on turf as we call Six Man football.

[00:17:56] And, you know, I was down at a public school in High Island, Texas and my son who played for me

[00:18:04] in high school, his first two years in high school, he played 11 man in his last two years in high

[00:18:08] school. He played Six Man. And, you know, it was, it was one of those, you know, his senior

[00:18:15] year, you know, we scored 123 points in a game. Wow. And we 45 somebody and we gave up 77.

[00:18:27] You know, and it's like, I get on the bus and I'm, and it was just one of those years where he's like,

[00:18:34] man, fellas, you know, we scored 123 points and I'm angry. It's like, you know, like,

[00:18:41] and I, and finally, you know, my wife texts me, she goes, you need to lighten up.

[00:18:47] You know, I said, yeah, but we gave up 77. And she goes, yeah, but you remember those

[00:18:52] days when you used to tell your defense coordinator, it's okay. This, you know, this game stacked against

[00:18:57] you, you know, you need to take your own medicine. And so yeah, but it's just, it's one of those games

[00:19:04] where, you know, and I'm an air raid guy. So, you know, we would, we run air raid principles

[00:19:09] in Six Man and we just light up, we just lighted the scoreboard running air raid stuff. And

[00:19:14] it was, it's a fun time. I love Six Man football as an offensive guy. I cannot imagine

[00:19:21] being a defensive guy. And I know that there are Six Man guys who are defensive gurus who will tell

[00:19:27] you that it can be done, but man, I tell you what, it is, it's a tough game to be a defensive guy at

[00:19:35] Six Man football. During those moments, of course, you know, as you said, and I know by experience,

[00:19:45] whether it's six or eight men, but I can only imagine Six Man in itself,

[00:19:49] what was it? How, when it came to like when your wife said you got to lighten up, you know, kind of

[00:19:55] take your own medicine type of thing. What was the process in your head to finally realize

[00:20:01] the kind of, you know, I know us guys, we don't like to take advice, especially from wives and

[00:20:07] sometimes it's not what I'm self worth respectfully, of course. I don't want to

[00:20:11] start nobody having a marriage fight here please though. But respectfully, we always have,

[00:20:16] you know, some, yeah, the wife was, you know, right and all that. But what was the process like

[00:20:21] for you when you had to finally have to face that fact of life, especially when it comes to Six

[00:20:25] Man and score and give it up to points and so on and so forth in your career?

[00:20:32] Yeah, it's just putting in perspective. You know, it really is just sitting back and just putting

[00:20:36] in, putting in all perspective exactly what, you know, what that, what the game is, you

[00:20:41] know, and that you're going to have those games. You're going to have those games of,

[00:20:46] you know, of you, you know, you score 123 points in a game and you're, you know,

[00:20:53] you're complaining about us giving up 77. I'm like, come on, really, you know, put it, put

[00:20:59] it in perspective, you know, put everything in perspective. And also, you know, I'm complaining

[00:21:05] about it. I need to be enjoying, for me, it was, I need to sit back and enjoy the time I have with

[00:21:11] my son and those times that I had in coaching him and that sort of thing. So it was just time to

[00:21:20] reflect on a bus ride home and say, hey, you know what, she's right. You know, I need to stop

[00:21:30] and enjoy the fact that we did win this game and that, you know, I do get to sit here and

[00:21:34] get to coach Zach and we won a game and just enjoy the, the, the spoils of victory and not

[00:21:43] on that, those little things. We'll fix what we need to fix. And, but let's, let's enjoy

[00:21:48] the, you know, winning, winning is harder. So let's not complain about it.

[00:21:56] I like that because a lot of times we forget to, you know, we forget to put a lot of things

[00:22:01] into perspective, especially when it comes to sports because, you know, the world is a

[00:22:10] end all be all when it comes to results. They want to see results quick regardless.

[00:22:14] High school, college, professional, semi, so on and so forth. And, you know, the results are

[00:22:21] what they want to see in the end. But, you know, I love that print, put it into perspective

[00:22:28] and throughout, you know, here you go six man through 11

[00:22:34] in the adjustments that you had to make even offensively. And then obviously you added five

[00:22:38] more players to the field. But, you know, from a coaching standpoint, what was the

[00:22:44] adjustments like going from six to 11? Well, you know, I, I was funny because,

[00:22:49] you know, I had coached, I had coached 11 man prior to going to six man. Very nice.

[00:22:54] And so the adjustment for me was when I went from 11 man to six man. Now that was the craziest

[00:23:01] adjustment because I was, I was coming from coaching in college to coaching six man. And no

[00:23:07] one bothered to tell me the rules of six man when I first got into it. And so I went from

[00:23:14] being a college defense coordinator and college head coach to being a six man offensive

[00:23:19] coordinator. And I'm, you know, no one bothers to tell me that quarterback can't run

[00:23:24] unless there's an indirect snap and all this stuff. And I'm in a scrimmage and

[00:23:29] my quarterback scrambling around and he gets in the line of scrimmage and he stops.

[00:23:34] And I kid you not, like, I kid you not. He stops at the line of scrimmage. He's right

[00:23:41] on our sideline. He's, we're in the middle of a scrimmage. He stops at the line of

[00:23:46] scrimmage and I yell at him, run. And he looks right at me. He goes, I can't. And I look around

[00:23:54] and go, why? Why? And everyone looks at me and says, well, the snap wasn't indirect to him. And

[00:24:01] I said, what does that even mean? Is anybody going to tell me what that means? I don't know

[00:24:06] what indirect snap means. Can somebody tell me what that means? You know, so, you know,

[00:24:12] it was just trial by fire. And so, you know, but that, you know, I love that that that year

[00:24:18] of my first year of ever coaching a six man football may have been one of the most fun years

[00:24:25] of coaching I ever had in my entire life. And we went five and five and I was just an offensive

[00:24:30] coordinator because all I did was coach ball that year. I wasn't, I was just a teacher

[00:24:36] and an offensive coordinator of a six man private school. And all I did was just coach ball.

[00:24:42] And it was one of the most, it was probably one of the most relaxing, joyful times I've had in my

[00:24:49] in 28 years. And I really, really enjoyed that year with those kids. And it's not to take anything

[00:24:56] away from all the other teams I had, but that was just one of those years where it's just,

[00:25:00] it was just all about coaching ball and developing relationships with kids.

[00:25:04] Now, you know, the transitioning back out of, you know, six man to 11 man, it, you know,

[00:25:11] basically it's just, you know, it's just the concepts of adding offense alignment. And

[00:25:22] that's it. I mean, really we ran such a pro style air raid in our six man stuff

[00:25:28] that really the transition, like when we were here at NBCA, you know, my first year we were,

[00:25:34] when I took over, we were six man. And then in year two and three, we were 11 man. So

[00:25:39] our kids were already ready to go from, from what we were doing. It was just teaching them

[00:25:45] the 11 man game. But the concept wise of what we were doing offensively, it was not

[00:25:51] really a hard transition for them. I like that. And it speaks volumes just, you know,

[00:25:59] in leadership itself knowing that, you know, you played a huge role in getting them prepped

[00:26:07] for that move from six to 11 make it to where it's not, not a huge, huge

[00:26:17] disavans, but more for an advantage for them in that season. And, you know, we see the game change

[00:26:24] averaged so drastically in our eyes now from a coaching standpoint, coach, you know,

[00:26:29] and in your profession, especially in high school, if I can talk tonight,

[00:26:34] especially in high school, what they, what the NIL and the ways of the college landscape is,

[00:26:42] what are your kind of thoughts on the whole college landscape? What you, from what,

[00:26:48] what you can say. I don't want to get into trouble here by it. But what you can say and,

[00:26:54] you know, how has that affected just when it comes just to really from a fan of the game?

[00:27:01] I think the biggest area, and this is, this is probably going to be me getting on my soap

[00:27:06] box. And there's probably going to be a lot of people if they, if, if who will probably

[00:27:12] disagree with me on this. I think where the current state of college football,

[00:27:19] what I don't like is how it has impacted high school recruiting and the fact that

[00:27:27] with the transfer portal and, and I listen, I am all in favor of kids being able to,

[00:27:35] to, to move around. I, you know, I'm not, I don't begrudge a kid for being able to just pick up

[00:27:44] and if coaches, if coaches can get up and move to a different school anytime he wants to,

[00:27:51] I don't begrudge a kid having that same opportunity. You know, I, you know, I don't.

[00:27:59] And so I'm not going to, I'm not going to sit here and say that it's wrong that a,

[00:28:02] that a kid, you know, that a kid can do it. I think what the issue that I have is how it's

[00:28:09] now impacting high school recruiting now. You know, it used to be where, where college is,

[00:28:16] where would recruit, you know, four or five high school quarterbacks. And now you're seeing where,

[00:28:24] unless you're the elite of the elite quarterbacks, colleges are taking, are signing one high school

[00:28:29] quarterback. You know, they're, they're signing, you know, you're not seeing these

[00:28:35] division two schools signing many high school quarterbacks anymore. They're signing one

[00:28:41] and then they're taking kids out. They're taking, they're taking portal kids,

[00:28:46] you know, and so it's changing the whole landscape. And really I see the areas,

[00:28:50] the areas that I'm, the two, the position groups that I see the biggest impact

[00:28:55] in recruiting are quarterbacks and linemen because colleges, you know,

[00:29:02] if you can, if you can record, if you can, if colleges can sign a man at quarterback out of

[00:29:10] the portal and sign a man at linemen out of the portal and get immediate results,

[00:29:18] then why, why recruit an 18 year old and wait for him to develop? So you're not getting these classes

[00:29:26] of five linemen anymore. Classes of one or two or whatever, you're getting in so that, you know,

[00:29:34] you're seeing these things where you're, you're, you're the landscape of recruiting is changing

[00:29:40] more and more. So it's all filtering now, now where, and so you're, you're getting kids who

[00:29:46] should be division two or division one, double A quarterbacks are going to vision three now.

[00:29:53] You know, and so just the whole landscape of recruiting has changed dramatically.

[00:29:58] And so that's kind of where I see, and that's just my opinion. And I'm sure,

[00:30:02] I'm sure I'm going to get people pushed back on that going, I don't know,

[00:30:05] you don't know what you're talking about. But that's just where, that's where I see

[00:30:11] the difference. And I, you know, and I'm not, I'm not attacking, I'm not attacking my own sons.

[00:30:19] You know, his talent, but you know, my son played six man football

[00:30:23] in high school and he was recruited out of high school to play at Angelos State University

[00:30:28] in 2017, a division two school, you know, and he was a two time all conference player.

[00:30:35] And he was a, and he led his, his, his school to the first, their first ever

[00:30:42] conference title in 30 something years or whatever it was. And he's getting ready to go play

[00:30:48] professional football over in Italy. I'm not sure in today's landscape my son

[00:30:54] would be recruited by Angelos State University today.

[00:30:59] Wow. That's, that's how, that's how the landscape of, of, of recruiting has changed today because of the

[00:31:06] portal, you know? And so that's, that's the crazy, that's the craziness of how things have changed.

[00:31:13] And that's not to take away anything from him because he was a pretty dynamic player,

[00:31:18] but that's just how things have changed dramatically. And he was a pretty dynamic

[00:31:22] player in college. I don't know if he would, if Angelos State would have recruited him

[00:31:26] coming out of high school anymore. And so that's where I see things have changed

[00:31:32] dramatically. And then you got the, the whole thing with NIL. I mean, that's, it's the Wild Wild West now.

[00:31:39] Yes sir.

[00:31:40] I mean, I, I, you know, wow.

[00:31:45] Yeah.

[00:31:46] I don't even, I don't even know where to get started on that.

[00:31:50] No, and it's been conversations, you know, that I've had

[00:31:53] previously with other people on the pod and vice versa when I, you know, join,

[00:31:58] you know, others as well on theirs. But you know, Herbert Rod, I think, I think more of the one

[00:32:05] that's come to mind that we've expressed those both on their pod and vice back on here. But

[00:32:11] the NIL is a very touchy subject to so many regardless of whatever route you go,

[00:32:19] so you're going to get a trend to where somebody's going to be upset. Or if you go take the other

[00:32:27] road well, then you get another group of people that don't. The NIL definitely

[00:32:33] is a touchy one. It isn't even with probably the right word for it. Just what do you really

[00:32:40] say about the NIL that's going to change and what's the best way to fix it? And

[00:32:46] so on and so forth. But I do know one thing the NIL has completely changed. You know,

[00:32:50] unfortunately I can't speak for high school, but you know, the college realm, it has definitely

[00:32:55] changed college sports, especially college football. But I think it's just the beginning of

[00:33:01] hopefully not the end of what the college football as we know it, but

[00:33:05] it's starting to get that way pretty quick. Yeah, I don't describe, you know, the one

[00:33:10] thing that I think is unfortunate is that they went, the NCAA and everybody involved,

[00:33:16] the powers that be went from one end of the spectrum to the complete far into the other

[00:33:24] end of the spectrum. Instead of finding that middle ground with proper regulation,

[00:33:32] you know, so what they basically did is they went from the Wild Wild West to the 80s where

[00:33:38] you had the SMUs in the in the bag man with the pony excess and all that stuff and all the things

[00:33:46] that happened there to now just do it out in the open. And so now it's just so blatant and so crazy

[00:33:56] that instead of just finding proper regulation, they went from one end of the spectrum to the

[00:34:03] polar opposite end of the spectrum. What I'm hoping and praying is that

[00:34:07] and I, you know, and I hope it never enters the state of Texas. I hope that the powers would be

[00:34:15] in the Texas High School Coach Association and everybody associated with with TAPs our private

[00:34:22] school affiliation of the UIL do not allow NIL to creep into the high schools because if it

[00:34:28] does it will ruin high school football as we know it. Yeah, and that's I'm afraid you know,

[00:34:37] in some states it's already taking place. Oklahoma, I know there's a few schools,

[00:34:43] I'm not going to say who but definitely and two of the three that I'm aware of are not even

[00:34:52] our power schools. But the other one is really your, I wouldn't say middle of the pack, but they're

[00:34:59] your more your probably your seven win team season probably what you're gonna get out of them year

[00:35:06] in and year out. But you know, again, I'm not going to say what schools because I'm

[00:35:13] you know, going to respect them but sure and not completely bashing but or not bashing

[00:35:17] however you want to approach it but you know, it's starting to affect some you know, at least here

[00:35:22] in Oklahoma hopefully not down there and I hate to see if it does but it wouldn't surprise me if it

[00:35:29] did I guess is unfortunate but when I just think it would be bad for I think it would be bad all

[00:35:38] around for everybody involved if it happens. Oh absolutely, absolutely and I just think

[00:35:47] no I just think it's all all the way around is going to be bad and I think it's just the beginning

[00:35:51] of what we're probably unfortunately going to be dealing with and I hate saying this but then

[00:35:58] do we and I'll get your thoughts on this if we because my playing days are completely

[00:36:05] my playing days are way done even at 36 I don't think I can tolerate much more hitting but

[00:36:12] even though I love to I don't know if I can take it much like I used to but

[00:36:18] the thing is is and I'll get your thoughts on this if we allow the NILs to fully take over

[00:36:26] at this point I think it's already done that in college football when it speaks into high school

[00:36:31] at this point is it safe to say that if we'll continue to allow it that now at this point

[00:36:38] we're just now playing for whoever has the most money or most benefits instead of the

[00:36:42] actual love of the game like myself and I'm sure you know you growing up as well playing

[00:36:48] football hey if we if we're playing football because you know we may not like the two or three

[00:36:53] days two or three a day practices and we sure don't like the heat but we were still out

[00:36:58] there day in and day out you know grinding with the grinds along with the the heat of Texas,

[00:37:02] Oklahoma and so on and so forth but is it safe to say coach that I'm afraid that we may lose that

[00:37:09] real passion and then now it's whoever has the most money or better benefits for the

[00:37:14] program or that I can go and play for? Oh absolutely I think you go it's going to become the

[00:37:18] you're going to go to the highest bidder. Yep. You know and it's it that's what you're going to

[00:37:23] pretty much now in college you're going to the high you're going to the highest bidder

[00:37:29] you know and that's just the real the reality of what it is you know it's who provides

[00:37:35] who's going to provide the best benefit you know and that's why I think that

[00:37:42] you know that's why it would be bad to have that that come into the high school realm

[00:37:49] is because now it's going to be you're going to have kids flipping schools every single year

[00:37:56] you know because one year you may be playing for you know so and so Christian and then the

[00:38:01] next year you're playing for so and so high and because so and so high you know decided to give

[00:38:07] you and your family uh $250,000 because this car dealership is a big sponsor of the program

[00:38:17] or whatever I mean it's just it's it's it's it's just you're opening up Pandora's box to

[00:38:24] something that doesn't need to be opened and if you allow it to seep into high school which I think

[00:38:31] is the you know the last bastion a pure a pure football you know it's I don't think you ever get

[00:38:40] that back. No I'm with you on that and along with the NIL is college expansion we've seen

[00:38:48] you know in your your neck of the woods are close to it SMU go into the ACC which

[00:38:57] I don't see anything ACC related to them but that's perfectly fine that's not neither near nor there

[00:39:03] and especially Cal and and Stanford go into the ACC of course you know definitely we talk Texas

[00:39:11] I'm not a Texas longhorn nor do I ever will admire them but they are what they are uh Texas

[00:39:18] Oklahoma go into the SEC what's your thoughts on just the college expansion at this point

[00:39:26] and uh I know we're not done for far from being done afraid and uh obviously you're close to Austin

[00:39:33] uh you know what's your thoughts on Texas going to the SEC and uh I ain't trying to run with some

[00:39:41] feathers down there but uh are they gonna see my success like Oklahoma may or may not in the

[00:39:46] SEC or just just too tough to call right now. To be honest with you I love the idea of both

[00:39:51] I'm not an Oklahoma fan I'm actually a Texas fan so you know I I do respect your your opinion

[00:39:58] on that um I do like I do like the idea of Texas and Oklahoma going to the SEC um you know to me

[00:40:06] um I think it's a better fit a better conference for both for both those schools

[00:40:12] um SMU going to the ACC I was unaware that the Atlantic coast was anywhere near Texas but

[00:40:19] um okay I also didn't I also but also you know UCLA and USC going to the Big 10

[00:40:31] doesn't make much sense either but then also Texas and Oklahoma are not in the southeast

[00:40:37] you know I when it came to you know when when realignment first emerged in the

[00:40:43] the you know the late 2000s uh you know when A&M and uh left for the SEC in Colorado and all that

[00:40:51] all that began um you knew that this was just just the beginning um and it was just a matter

[00:40:59] of time that this all was going to happen you know for me it's I'm waiting for just the the time

[00:41:08] where you reach that that super conference kind of get into that NFL model where you have two you

[00:41:14] have two conferences with with divisions you know and and you reach and you just especially with the

[00:41:22] expansion of the play

[00:41:36] the whole idea of these traditions and these and having uh rivalries listen those have been

[00:41:45] thrown out the window yeah I mean Texas and Texas A&M haven't played each other in forever

[00:41:52] you know and that when that rivalry when they decided that that rivalry no longer mattered

[00:41:59] that told me everything I needed to know about rivalries didn't matter anymore

[00:42:03] yep if you're willing to throw that one out the window then rivalries don't matter

[00:42:09] because that one to me is more sacred than Texas Oklahoma

[00:42:14] and so absolutely yeah I felt the same way with oh you're Nebraska

[00:42:18] oh absolutely I that I agree 100% there oh you Nebraska is the equivalent to me

[00:42:25] as a is a traditional diehard college football fan oh you uh oh you Nebraska and Texas Texas A&M

[00:42:35] those are traditional yep you know it's like Ohio State Michigan

[00:42:41] those are the those are the those are the the blue blood type rivalries that you just should

[00:42:47] never go away you know and and so I'm just you know the day the day of the of the super

[00:42:54] conference let's just let's just merge it let's put two suit you know let's just have a the

[00:42:59] NFC and the AFC or you know let's let's have 32 let's have 32 teams and put them together and

[00:43:11] let's let's have our super conference our super league and the the the the non-five

[00:43:20] and call it like it is and and let's just let's move on I mean because the non-power five

[00:43:27] schools are already being left out to dry anyway oh yeah absolutely and they can and and those non-power

[00:43:33] five schools they can have the bowl games because no let's be honest no one's going to the bowl games

[00:43:41] well no and and the bowl game the bowl game I'm not saying this because Oklahoma's lost

[00:43:47] now two in a row I have no I don't the bowl games to me I unless you're in the playoffs

[00:43:52] nobody's I don't really care at this point but I mean and it's no disrespect to the players that are

[00:43:58] playing but you get a lot of opt-outs a lot of them transfer a lot of the coaches they won't a lot of

[00:44:03] them depends on what how you leave you can't you know coach your actual team um and and so on

[00:44:10] our so forth so it's just it's a nice thing for the players and that's what it is yeah I mean

[00:44:17] shoot we got we got Texas high school state playoff weekend that out draws from six man to the six

[00:44:26] eighths title games out draws most of the bowl games hmm and and Jerry world you know it just

[00:44:36] that weekend most of the time most of those games will out draw most of the bowl games

[00:44:41] that that are played throughout the the bowl season just just that weekend

[00:44:48] and we got some comments coming in from my good buddies from the Herb and Ross podcast unsure which

[00:44:53] one it is I'm going to say go out in the women's states probably going to be Herb that's probably

[00:44:59] sending these out but I don't know anyway when you think ACC you think Texas of course that's

[00:45:05] exactly oh yeah I mean when you think when you think Atlantic Coast Conference

[00:45:12] it screams Texas absolutely and this is coming from a guy who lived three years down on the

[00:45:18] Texas Gulf Coast it screams Atlantic Ocean and then uh realignment sucks and then uh it's always

[00:45:29] Herb so good to know thank you Herb I appreciate the uh the clarity I do want to make sure but no

[00:45:36] definitely coach the ACC in Texas I mean that's you're screaming that one I don't know what SMU

[00:45:42] brings and that's not my that's not my call but you know and I have a lot of respect I have a

[00:45:47] lot of respect for for um for Coach Lashley and in the work that he does there

[00:45:52] he is an incredible coach I think they're going to make some noise there

[00:45:56] and and they have to make the move that's best for their program um that was just the craziest one

[00:46:02] that was one of the crazy ones um that I saw was like wow SMU to the Atlantic Coast Conference

[00:46:10] okay okay yeah I was I had um Casey a part of the Sluggo podcast which is now

[00:46:20] affiliate with the message boy uh message board geniuses but had him on and like he said I don't

[00:46:26] know what brings I don't know what screams the ACC more than Cal Stanford and SMU besides baseball and

[00:46:34] and and academics and obviously that's the real reason why it was going there but uh

[00:46:43] Herb Rod I missed the Pac-12 already yeah I think we're all going with you once this all

[00:46:47] uh gets out in the wash and didn't SMU give up the ACC money for like seven years

[00:46:53] yes yes sir yeah that's unfortunate they're gonna miss that money really quick

[00:47:01] well I think I think the only reason why they gave us because of their endowment

[00:47:05] I think they have the endowment that can that that could cover it so that's the only reason why

[00:47:11] they have uh they gave it up is because they have an endowment that can cover the the the expense of it

[00:47:19] but I still think that I mean that's a that's a pretty bold it was a pretty bold move though

[00:47:25] but they got out of the ACC to get you know to do it but it's still a pretty shrewd move

[00:47:33] real quick because you're obviously familiarized just as much as I am

[00:47:36] here you think it's going to take over the big 12 now since the big brothers of the big 12

[00:47:40] are gone the ones that carried him through literally any kind of sport that there is in the big 12

[00:47:46] Oklahoma Texas who's in the big 12 well you know our little brother OSU is and that's you know that's

[00:47:52] nice of them um you add whatever remaining teams left and with the additions of Colorado

[00:47:59] Arizona Arizona state and then uh Utah um I really and truly um I would never discount Mike

[00:48:09] Gundy um and what in the work he does I really I mean I think that he does he does you're in

[00:48:18] your out I think he does a lot with and I don't know I don't know how he does it he does it with

[00:48:23] mirrors um but he does um Utah is such a tough hard-nosed team I don't I don't think there

[00:48:33] are people in the in the big 12 who are going to be quite ready for the the physicality that Utah

[00:48:40] brings weekend and week out but I'm also not sure Utah is ready for some of the things that the big

[00:48:46] 12 um some of the big 12 teams bring to the table so that'll be an interesting mix

[00:48:54] from from that standpoint um I'm still not 100 sure about Colorado and Dion I

[00:49:03] you know he is that he's the wild card of it all yep um and then you know I'm a big Joey

[00:49:10] McGuire fan um from his day you know from his days in high school at Cedar Hill

[00:49:17] um I just and this is probably the just the old man biterman in me um because I'm a

[00:49:27] Mike Leach guy I I I would love to root for Texas Tech because of Joey McGuire but I can't root for

[00:49:34] Texas Tech because of what they did to Mike Leach um but I agree you know but if there's if there's

[00:49:41] a guy if there's a guy who could get tech turned around and back on the map it's Joey McGuire

[00:49:50] yeah I think Texas Tech I think um you know could definitely make some noise I think Utah could

[00:49:59] um OSU I think Oklahoma State Gundy always finds a way to do it even when we don't think

[00:50:06] he's got anything of that team you know with Ollie Gordon in the backfield this year I mean

[00:50:11] you can't count them out at all like you can play but um I'll obviously still watch the big

[00:50:17] 12 not as closely as I was previously now but just curious how how they come about I know um

[00:50:26] Hermex a good comment Utah is a great team but every year they they lose a road game or two

[00:50:32] that they should not yeah and then the big 12 winner this year could easily have two to three losses

[00:50:39] oh there's no doubt there's no doubt about that yeah

[00:50:45] how do you uh there as a Texas fan um what's your expectations of Texas this year I know

[00:50:54] the recruiting class looks really good and of course Quinn comes back and that was a huge plus

[00:51:00] for you guys as well um coming off a big 12 championship season I was hoping that would

[00:51:05] be oh you Texas one last time but didn't pay it out that way but uh what's your as of Texas just as

[00:51:11] a Texas fan what's your expectations and what's your uh excitement built around headed into the

[00:51:17] southeastern conference I love the work that coach sark's doing I think I think that he I think

[00:51:25] the culture that he's built at Texas and the the way he's going about building that program

[00:51:32] and through recruiting and through the portal is the right is the right mix um you know I really

[00:51:39] just I believe that he's I think he's finally he has his feet firmly planted on the ground

[00:51:45] here at Texas um and he's doing things the right way uh and I think he had I think he has this

[00:51:52] program and I don't you know I know people say oh Texas is back I think he has this program

[00:51:58] back to where it's finally established to being where it needs to be consistently um

[00:52:07] I don't know what to expect from Texas in year one of the sec I really don't because it's such

[00:52:15] it's such a new thing um because you know the whole I I'm just excited because I love the sec

[00:52:24] I absolutely love the sec and so the idea of Texas being in the sec and the idea of Oklahoma

[00:52:33] being the sec just excites everything about it just excites me and so I don't know even what to

[00:52:40] to expect from from a win-loss standpoint but all I know is that I'm freaking excited

[00:52:47] about Saturdays in the sec for Texas and Oklahoma um and I pumped up about it um and so you know

[00:52:57] I'm not gonna sit here and tell you oh Texas is gonna run the table and they're gonna be

[00:53:00] undefeated and blah blah blah there's gonna you know in the sec you're I mean they're not

[00:53:05] I think they're they're a step below Georgia oh absolutely they're a step below they're a

[00:53:10] step below Georgia I think they probably got they probably got two losses on the schedule

[00:53:15] mm-hmm they got one to two losses on the schedule and I think that's and I honestly I think that's

[00:53:20] reasonable at this point in time right now with the unknown of what the sec schedule has in front of

[00:53:28] them just because because I just don't the unknown of going through that gauntlet

[00:53:34] but I like what he's building I think he's doing it right I think he's built this team

[00:53:39] in the getting ready for the sec I think that's the thing that he's built it preparing for the sec

[00:53:48] not building it preparing for the big 12 right built this team getting ready for the sec

[00:53:53] and so that's what I'm excited about

[00:53:59] no I'm pumped just the fact that me even from a OU standpoint the fact that we can

[00:54:05] replace a lot of 11 am kickoffs I am excited about that we don't have many of those hopefully not but

[00:54:12] but jokes aside on that but the fact that we can replace you know Kansas with Auburn Kansas State

[00:54:18] with Tennessee Texas Tech with the LSU Baylor with yes I mean Alabama I mean list goes on I mean yeah

[00:54:26] we get banned but that's probably be that way it's a moment but it's just a fact to be in in

[00:54:32] the best conference in college football and I was saying that before OU even joins it's not like

[00:54:36] well you guys are chaining up now because the sec you guys are no I've always thought the sec was the

[00:54:40] best oh yeah football conference in America no doubt but just the fact it's a different

[00:54:48] yeah I'll miss you know they've got our number two the last three years even though I still

[00:54:52] believe Lincoln rally through the bellum game three years ago but um but you know I still

[00:54:59] you know it's it's gonna be something different and in excitement I'm like you I'm more excited I am

[00:55:04] now just wish we can just start playing tomorrow and I'll be perfectly fine but yeah but you know the

[00:55:11] one thing that I am disappointed about about with the whole I the whole thing with the sec move

[00:55:17] and you're gonna laugh at this uh oh I hate the fact that cbs is no longer carrying the sec

[00:55:24] isn't that the truth

[00:55:28] they no longer have this they no longer have the sec game of the week on cbs

[00:55:36] that's the only that's the only thing that ticks me off there's something special about 230 kickoffs

[00:55:42] on cbs on Saturday afternoon absolutely and it's the theme song and the theme song I'm glad I'm not

[00:55:48] the only one who thinks that now it's the big 10 it's the big 10 exactly and I'm not and I'm not

[00:55:55] watching that no it puts big 10 puts me asleep uh I'm not gonna lie basketball especially but football

[00:56:02] I just can't get that I'm not you know disrespecting some of the teams in there like a Michigan or

[00:56:07] Ohio State even though I've seen some low score in affairs with them I just can't get excited

[00:56:12] for a six to three half time score or 13 to five final score I just I don't get into that kind of

[00:56:20] stuff no I want to go watch an sec game on Saturday 230 on cbs and now I got to flip it over to ESPN

[00:56:29] which will be fine I'll deal with it but still I mean it's just like come on

[00:56:35] well I don't know I'm with you on that at least give us one year of OU and tech

[00:56:39] yeah exactly don't give us OU Texas 230 on ESPN or ABC whatever they treat with yeah yeah

[00:56:48] but I you know I'll survive I'll survive I know one thing OU fans I'm sure Texas fans that's watching

[00:56:56] and listening and in the future and currently and coach I'm sure you can probably be on board

[00:57:02] I just wish OU I just wish there were some fans and OU fans are out there too this I've

[00:57:08] heard them a lot there's no chance OU Texas will ever go to an evening game unless they're

[00:57:16] here they're in AT&T stadium just because if people if you know where the cotton bowl is if you've

[00:57:21] been there I've been there and it's not in a good area I'll just put it that way no and that's why

[00:57:27] it is never going to be a night game there it's not gonna it's not gonna happen and I know they

[00:57:32] just you know they're about to do a lot of huge renovations to the stadium so that probably

[00:57:37] gives an indication that they're not moving the game now I can I'll tell you what I'm

[00:57:43] you know I think this is probably again the traditionalist old guy in me

[00:57:47] talking but I don't ever want to move it out of the cotton I don't want to move it

[00:57:51] in the cotton and I don't I don't you know I'm not a big fan of the fact that they moved

[00:57:54] the cotton bowl out of the cotton bowl no no you know and it moved it to to AT&T stadium

[00:58:01] I get why they did it because it's it's climate controlled and stuff but I like I like OU Texas

[00:58:08] in Dallas at the fairgrounds where it should be and you know I don't like it at 11 a.m. I'd rather

[00:58:15] it be 2 30 you know but hopefully it'll it'll be 2 30 game you know and you know more more time

[00:58:25] than it's not but um yeah I don't I don't foresee that game ever being a seven o'clock kickoff on

[00:58:31] Saturday night no so no if it does the whole I'm not making jokes I'm not making light of

[00:58:39] situation but the whole city of Dallas and the surrounding areas will send their police

[00:58:44] unit there just to make sure nothing yeah it'll be it'll be a little bit it'll be a little bit

[00:58:50] different oh absolutely yeah absolutely absolutely but as we wind down there's a topic I wanted to

[00:58:56] suggest uh talk about and uh we put it you know I put always this way it's great to talk football

[00:59:02] and basketball whatever support people like to talk about me on the other hand it's mainly

[00:59:06] football but um faith in life and at the end it's just a game and a lot of people argue that

[00:59:14] and I know even some Christian people that will argue that it's pretty mind blowing but

[00:59:20] it is what it is but faith faith is a big thing in your life I know um I see it on your

[00:59:27] Twitter and I and you know growing up as a pastor's kid it's a big thing in my life

[00:59:31] haven't always been perfect now not even close but I've had my mess ups along the way but

[00:59:37] what has faith uh from a personal standpoint meant to you but put it into a perspective

[00:59:44] from a coach um from a coaching standpoint what has faith shown you even in your profession

[00:59:50] in your profession uh you know for me my faith is the foundation of why I do what I do um

[00:59:59] and you know and it's why I love where I'm at because I'm able to share my faith every day

[01:00:04] with with my kids uh you know we pray every day before practice um we pray every day after

[01:00:10] practice we every day that we you know we we have a thing that we we do every day at the beginning

[01:00:17] of practice um when we after we open up in prayer which is called high level listening and we choose

[01:00:22] it we choose a topic of the week um and it's something that's uh it's character based uh

[01:00:28] biblically based um and what we do is we have a coach that does it on Monday a coach do it

[01:00:34] on Tuesday another coach does it on Wednesday and then we have a player lead it on Thursday

[01:00:38] and then on Friday um my devotion um my pregame devotion is based on that topic

[01:00:46] and my pregame speech is based on that topic um and so everything is everything for that

[01:00:53] topic and is of that week we we discuss and so during that week and and so my faith is is central

[01:01:02] um to what I do and why I do it um and I'm not I'm not shy about it with my kids and

[01:01:09] and I I love the fact that I'm in a in a place um that I don't have to sit here

[01:01:16] and be shy about it um and you know be able to sit here and and and be able to have a young man

[01:01:23] or a young lady come into my office who's struggling and be able to just pray with them

[01:01:29] and and talk about it uh that's the that's the cool thing uh and to be able to share my faith

[01:01:35] in my walk and and I'll tell you this you do you talk about where you know you're

[01:01:41] where you you're you're not perfect we're not perfect and that's that's why we are

[01:01:44] that's why we are who we are you know we were born imperfect you know we we just we just

[01:01:51] completed you know Easter Sunday there that was the the whole reason why he why Jesus died

[01:01:56] on the cross you know because of of our sin you know and and so when people talk about

[01:02:04] you know you're you're you're a hypocrite well yeah yes I am exactly exactly I mean that's

[01:02:11] that's why I I go to church I mean I am a I am a hypocrite I you know I am not perfect

[01:02:18] and that's that's why I you know I strive every day to to be better I have my missteps

[01:02:26] you know because I'm human I am human and so and I you know I I ask for forgiveness every day

[01:02:36] I pray for forgiveness every day because I do have my missteps because I'm human and so

[01:02:43] you know to be able to be in that environment and to be able to talk to our kids about those

[01:02:46] things you know like today Wednesday you know it's my small group day with my I have junior boys

[01:02:52] and so we talk about that stuff and which is awesome to be able to talk with a small group

[01:02:57] of junior boys about this topic is really really cool and and so you know it's just being able

[01:03:05] to make that impact on a daily basis with kids and and being in the role that I'm in as the

[01:03:12] athletic director and then also as the head football coach to be out be out on the football

[01:03:16] field and you know it's it's bigger than the game of football I love you know I love to win games

[01:03:24] but I know and I my my head my head boys basketball coach Cody Carr who's a great great man

[01:03:30] he's a great basketball coach but he's a better man we both had the same philosophy

[01:03:35] the wins and losses are the wins will always come wins and losses that they will take

[01:03:39] care of themselves that all happens we define our wins by how we develop our our student athletes

[01:03:49] when they graduate from high school so we know we've done our job after graduation

[01:03:57] yeah what what men have we developed in the four years or whatever years the number

[01:04:03] of years we've had these kids that's that's the win and so that's that's when we find out if we've

[01:04:11] done our job is what have what what have they become after graduation and so to me um then

[01:04:21] that's why I strive to always be why I strive to be a relational coach you know I'm I'm as

[01:04:27] competitive as as as can be I hate to lose I am I I am I am a sore bitter man loser

[01:04:39] on Friday nights on Saturday mornings and most Sundays after a loss um but nothing

[01:04:47] makes me happier than knowing that I made the difference in a young man's life

[01:04:53] during football season if I'm able to if I'm able to know that that football season I changed his

[01:05:00] life by something that I've said I did or whatever um that's the win that's the win so that's that's

[01:05:11] that's what matters to me no I like that just because of passion that's in it because I know a

[01:05:19] lot of people that's probably I want to be like that and you know and I get you know you got a

[01:05:24] unfortunate Sally you got to watch yourselves in the work profession and and stuff like that but

[01:05:30] the fact that uh you're living out to call it and and even God's path in in your life and

[01:05:36] you know you went from you know potential Wall Street to coaching Texas high school football

[01:05:42] which is one of the best in the country don't matter what level Texas high school football

[01:05:47] is definitely by far one of the best and so you know I I respect that I could even see

[01:05:53] you know God working just through you which is just a passion passion and through the program with

[01:06:01] the you know new athletic venues and everything coming obviously it's the best has yet to come

[01:06:06] and yeah just something bigger is about to be on the horizon well I'm excited like I said I'm

[01:06:12] blessed to be where I'm at the Lord the Lord continues to bless me and being a wildcat and you

[01:06:19] know and I I'm very very grateful that you've given me the platform to to be on tonight and to be able

[01:06:26] to share that and I've thoroughly enjoyed just being able to talk ball and and and just and

[01:06:33] just rant about the rights and the wrongs of football and and that sort of thing and you

[01:06:40] know I absolutely I love talking football and and then also having the opportunity just to talk about

[01:06:47] the Lord and and all the great things going on at NBCA and you know it's it's a good it's a it's a

[01:06:53] I'll tell you this it's a great day to it's a great day to be a wildcat well I can definitely see

[01:06:58] that and I'm gonna keep an eye out on that schedule because definitely you know Oklahoma

[01:07:04] City is not too far I mean it's what two and a half hour drive probably so give or take but

[01:07:11] depends on how fast you're going but it's not far so I drive through all the time going through

[01:07:18] Dallas but awesome coach you're always welcome back on it's well I appreciate it and you're
