True Detective HBO Anthology Show Recap (with Oreo Brewer)

Oreo Brewer & Cam Sully talk about the divisive, moody, uneven & always changing four season run of HBO's TRUE DETECTIVE.

We figured that we'd dive into plenty of other uncanny serialized TV mysteries during the X-FILES themed week so why not this mega-hit?

Why are all the big-name stars arguably playing their most unusual roles?

What mysteries stick and which ones leave little to the imagination?

And should it had only been one season per the creator's original plan or was HBO not taking "No" for an answer?

[00:00:25] Well, you don't pick your parents and you don't pick your partner. A smart guy who's steady is hard to find. And I was steady. Rusty was smart.

[00:00:52] I don't want to know anything. This is a world where nothing is solved. This is going to happen again. Nor it's happened before.

[00:01:17] In all your life, not all your love, all your hate, all your memory, all your pain, it was all the same thing. It was all the same dream, a dream that you had inside a locked room. A lot of dreams, there's a monster at the end of it.

[00:02:14] Just what is it you found? Something deep and dark.

[00:03:08] Shortest podcast ever. The shortest episode ever. Record, stop, start. Start again. Yeah, so let's talk about a little known edgy procedural known as True Detective. True Detective, that's a good detective anthology show. I love that. Yeah. Season one is amazing. Season two, I need to rewatch. Season three is my absolute favorite. That was so good.

[00:03:37] And then Night Country, that blew me the fuck away. I was like, wow. Damn. I never thought I'd see, um... Oh, fuck, I forgot her damn name. Jodie Foster. Yeah, I never thought I'd see her in a police procedural again. Because the last time I saw her in something like that was The Brave One. That's how long it's been since I've seen her do something really good. Yeah, she's briefly in Elysium, but yeah, that was the first time she led him.

[00:04:06] Oh yeah, that too. I forgot about that. No, that's good. I get it. But yeah, True Detective, that's a wild show. It's a hell of a concept for HBO. It's a definite march away from the wire, that's for sure. The guy who created Nick Pizzolatto, and it's wild. Pizzolatto. Yeah, he's an Italian boy, and I love it. He's a pizza.

[00:04:37] Pizza eatery, yeah. So I love how he's like, it should have only been one season. I'm like, then why did you renew it? I know, right? No one has to do, but okay. Yeah, I... Again, I think the main compelling thing was the theme song of the first season. And I dug how Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey

[00:05:05] were playing complete parallels of who they are. Like, Harrelson is a God-fearing Christian, and McConaughey's an atheist. And that's complete... They're complete opposites of that in real life. But they had good camaraderie. They played off each other very well. I was also, though, kind of at the point where I'm like, I don't really see what this does different than the other shows, but there's some interesting visuals.

[00:05:32] But yeah, season two, I can see why a lot of people trashed on it, because it was kind of just a crazy, bizarre action show. Yeah. And season three brought it all around by having to be David Milch of NYPD Blue and Deadwood Fame frame an ongoing serialized mystery with Stephen Dorff and Maharsha Ali. And the time travel, that was heckable. Back and forth, back and forth. Yes. So I think that's just it.

[00:06:02] I think it was playing more to the David Fincher wire crowd, I think. Yeah. I didn't really just go along with it. But it's so funny. People who I don't even like crime stuff, mystery stuff, cop shows, they love this. And I think that's just it. But I think that's why HBO bid on this and said, let's craft the show, because it's I had a teacher who didn't generally like serialized mysteries praise the show, because

[00:06:30] I think it just brought everyone out of their comfort zone, especially with some of the cult leaders. Yeah. I think my issue is I just didn't remember all the different serial killers at the end of the day. They just didn't stand out to me. But I understand why season one is still held in high regard, because it's just it. It just brought everyone. It just wasn't playing around. I guess I had an issue with just the detective sleeping with an underage prostitute. I'm like, where's this going?

[00:06:58] But look, titties is HBO stamp. I don't mind those. I'm just like, why do you have to be underage? That's typical. That's shitty. It's very typical. It's too funny. It's the same as. Oh, what is it? Celebrity Scandal 1 for 50. I don't know. No, Vincent and Mary in Godfather Coda.

[00:07:28] True. Yeah. And I like that. I love that. That is one of my favorite portrayals of that. Like, it fits so well. And it's not trashy. It's not skimpy. It's not. Yeah, exactly. It's not exploitive. It's not like, oh, yeah, they're fucking because they're related. Like, no, it's different. It's common because that's Italians and the French. Yeah, they don't have standards.

[00:07:57] How do you feel how this portrays culture and various morbid crimes and everything? It's very realistic. Like, it's so real. Because there's actual cults out there and shit. But, oh, for HBO, like, it's a real step outside of their box. With how they did stuff back then.

[00:08:23] Because, you know, if you try to be the same as everyone else, you come across as a copycat. And you have no substance. You have no flavor. You have no whatever. You're not original. You have to be original to shit. And, you know, HBO is going back to, you know, home box office state. Bringing in star power like that. Like, that's perfect. Yeah. And that's what made it click and made it work so well.

[00:08:52] What was your favorite of the different settings? Oh, my God. First one's in Louisiana. Second one's in California somewhere. And then third season's in the Ozark. Fourth one's in Alaska. Alaska is definitely the big mood setter. Because it's all about isolationism. It's depressing. There's no sun.

[00:09:22] And it's, you know, it's a classic whodunit. And the casting for that was perfect. Everybody hated it because it was women. That's the general complaint. And, of course, the other... I had no idea about that. I know, right? Jesus. I couldn't get into this because I've just seen so much stuff. But I would never in my life. I mean, why even go there? Because that's what they did. And then the next complaint is there's no story.

[00:09:54] Like, there is a fucking story. There is a story. I just don't like how it's told. But that's... The best part of that was the trailer. Where they found the... Where they went into the guy's trailer and how that was designed. I was like, that was beautiful. That was a lot of detail on that shit. And I really would love an art book on that show. Just to see how they... I would love to see that built. Because that was beautiful.

[00:10:21] I think mainly people also love the southern gothic nature of it. Yeah, that too. That's the big thing. Because there's not too many material like it. Usually you have to go to a horror anthology if you want to find something like that. Yeah, for real. And it's nice seeing cops go outside of the box. Yes. Versus staying in, like, New York or Florida or Texas or Milwaukee or LA. Oh, far anywhere. Yeah.

[00:10:48] It's like, give me a different location for fuck's sake. Like, go somewhere different. I know they were talking about going to Mexico in the next season. And I'm like, that'll be fun. I can't wait to see that. The detective. Sicario. That'd be interesting. I forget what the premise for Mexico was going to be. But they said they were thinking about shooting in Mexico because they wanted to have it Mexican oriented. I was like, that works. That's good. That's great.

[00:11:18] Maybe if you can get on the bandwagon. I think it's because I saw Lopez, you know, is from there. And she wanted to just play around with what the cultural influence. I wish they would renew Penny Dreadful. That was, oh man. Yeah. I heard it. The Angels deserve so much better than what it got. So much more. But oh well. I heard it wasn't that bad. It's just like people. Nitpicky. Well, that's just it. And why is it? No matter what they do. It's like, it's not about the actor.

[00:11:47] It's about the story. Oh, I came here for the actor. I'm like. Little like Germans. Horrible. Oh my God. Grow up. Get out of here. Like it was perfect. It was the best fucking setting too. Like. I still need to see more of it. I know Timothy Dalton was on it earlier on. Yeah. He was in the first show. City of Angels is a follow up to it. That was. I love this. I love the. I love the whole thing. There's also Penny Dreadful Connex too. I want to get into those eventually.

[00:12:16] Isn't it wild how a lot of these are supernatural. But they're not necessarily horror. Yeah. That's what I like. It's a true form return to supernatural. Roots. Versus the actual show supernatural. Which is just. Right. And where you're just like. Fooled me once. Can't fool me again. It's like. Oh, look at that. One episode's the main story. The other one's mythos. Great. I don't care. Like.

[00:12:45] Give me something that's multifaceted. Don't give me that linear bullshit. Yeah. Like. I love the difference. It's fun. Because you get to see. Different styles they go through. And. The. Time travel with it. And then also. Where everybody was at. In their career. Yes. At that point. That's my favorite part. Because it's like. Look at their work ethic. During that time frame. And it's like. Having to go back. A few years too. Because it's like. Yeah.

[00:13:15] They probably got the script for it. Two years previous. And then they started working on it. A year later. And then. It finally came out. The following year. Mm-hmm. Yeah. It's wild. I mean. I'm cool with. Where this market is now. Where people say. Hey. You know. This. You're going to get your product. And we're going to keep it going. For as long as we want. There's no. End game. Because we can. Do one of these.

[00:13:45] Every. One to three years. Yeah. Because it takes that long. And. I'm like. Okay. So if Ryan Murphy or Dick Wolf can do that. Why. Why do people get so angry. When you just. Add a label on it. I mean. I don't see you bitching about this with Star Wars. Oh. That's right. Yes. You do. Because. I. I'm sorry. All the other characters are more interesting. Than the damn Skywalkers. They are. Yeah. They are. I'm not going to. I'm not going to deny it. They really are. And. It's funny. I was just like.

[00:14:14] Get your head out of your ass. I didn't like them killing all. All three main characters. But that's a whole different story. It's like. There's nothing wrong with. Trying to explore the whole damn. What makes everything tick. It's a thing of. The universe is bigger than a fucking family. We'll return. After these messages. Hi folks. How's back here? [00:16:11] then listen to the Florida Men on Florida Man podcast. That's Florida Men, plural, on Florida Man podcast. Do you ever find yourself thinking about who would win in a fight between Goku and Superman? Hi, I'm James Gabsy, and on the Who Would Win show, me and my co-host Ray ignore anything important happening in the outside world, and debate fictional battles between characters from comics, movies, and video games. We got a new show every week, and almost always am I the winner. Yeah, not true, Ray.

[00:16:38] In the past, we've discussed such matches as Captain America vs. Darth Vader, Solid Snake vs. the Iron Giant, classic matchups like Robocop vs. Terminator, and even the Muppets vs. Sesame Street. That one was crazy. So if you're a fan of geek culture and love a spirited debate, check out the Who Would Win show wherever you get your podcasts, or check us out at whowouldwinshow.com. That's the problem.

[00:17:06] That's what Disney doesn't understand about Star Wars, is that it's not about the Skywalkers. It's everything around it that's important, too. And they don't get that concept. They really don't. That's the problem. Mm-hmm. That's one of the main complaints that people have pointed out, is that it's bigger than just Luke and everybody else. It's not just about Luke and O.T. It's about everything else. Involved.

[00:17:37] It's worked on other projects. I don't know why they can't make it work with others, but whatever. We don't want to alienate our fan base. Okay. Right. Dumbasses. Whatever. No matter what you do, you're going to alienate them anyway. All right. Mm-hmm. No. Yeah. True Detective. Damn.

[00:18:06] That's amazing, because it's such a low-budget deal, too. That's what makes it even more exciting. It'll take a pay cut. Yep. Yeah. That's what I like. Like, it's amazing, because you have all this good star power in it, good stories, and it brings recognition to past stars who now have something new to offer, because they had a new role and a new rebirth and shit.

[00:18:35] It's like Brendan Fraser. Yep. Yeah. Like, he went unnoticed for a while because he had his depression and whatnot, and then he came back with that FX series and then Doom Patrol, and now The Whale. Mm-hmm. So, yeah, he's doing good. And it's nice seeing that. It's like, damn, he went through so much shit, and now he's doing better.

[00:19:04] I wouldn't mind seeing him on True Detective. There's still time. Yeah, that's true. Well, I mean, that's the other thing. It kind of goes back to actors. Oh, they're doing something I don't want to see them doing. I'm like, well, that's it. Not your problem. That's not happening. They're going to challenge themselves. Those people are the ones who think they have invisible control over everybody. Yeah. And they don't. They don't.

[00:19:34] There's no control. You have no control if you think you do, you're full of shit. I made that. I did that whole scorched earth video on that shit. Oh, God. Yeah. I hate people like that. I have to control them. You have no control. They'll do what you want. They'll do what they want to do, not the other way around. Ugh. I mean, if True Detective does go to Mexico,

[00:20:03] I can't. Even though it's typecast as fuck, I want to see Danny Trejo in it. Do it. Have him be somebody who's not generally playing. I know, but it's like so typecast because he's like every role that he's in, he's a bad guy. And it's like, oh, yeah, he's a Mexican too. It's like, yeah, that's true. He would fit the bill. But it's like, make it, make him interesting. Don't just have him be like, oh, I'm going to kill somebody. Yeah. Because like,

[00:20:33] and it's fun. It's fun when you cast somebody who's very well known and they hear something out of their comfort zone. It's like, oh, this is different. Ugh. Yeah. It'd be nice to just, like, I like when the show goes into culture. Like, that's important to me. Like, like, Penny Dreadful City Angels goes into culture and I like that a lot. That's one of the things that stood out about it

[00:21:01] was they went into Mexican culture. They went into the German bun in LA. And I was so enthralled by that. I was like, wow, I didn't know the Nazis were in LA back then. That's intriguing to me. I didn't know anything about that. Watchmen, the series, did that with the Tulsa Massacre and people didn't even know that existed until the show highlighted it.

[00:21:32] I'm like, there we go again. Shows highlighting history. It's crazy. And I love, that's why I like comics because comics do the same thing. You know, I'll read something and I'll be surprised that it's based on a historic event. Godfather Coda did the same thing mentioning Alex Meucci who invented the telephone and then he did it before Alexander Bell. And then

[00:22:02] this will crack you the fuck up. You know Don Amici, right? Yeah. I didn't know who the fuck he was when they mentioned it until I saw this. I was like, I figured it was another mob boss they were talking about as a character. Yeah. And then I look him up like, that's Mother, that's Don? That motherfucker? Really? I had no idea. It just, I never knew. I figured it was

[00:22:31] just another mob boss that was affiliated with the Corleones, but now like, damn. Like, it's amazing learning these things. Like, it's cool that they sprinkled little historical facts in the film and shit and comics and wherever. I love that. It gives it flavor. It gives it purpose. It gives it more depth that you can explore. Like, if you want to know about that cultural aspect, you can. And don't tell the clickbait sides

[00:23:01] who want to misinterpret all the statements. I'm like, that is not what they meant. You know that's not what they meant. That is crystal clear what they meant. And there's been other ones that have been so bad. Like, Screen Rant for a while was doing the whole clickbait. The 10 worst rated episodes or movies according to IMDB. I'm like, so you didn't watch it. You said you didn't watch it. You're just looking for something easy. We don't necessarily agree with this, but here's what some people said. I'm like, no. Did you actually

[00:23:30] read what they're bitching about? Or no. You're just anything to make a living, I guess. Yeah, that's true. But it is fascinating. I like that aspect though. It's funny. Clickbait is one of them things that will always be so gullible to fall for and yet makes everybody else look like a jackass. it's so stupid. And then the thumbnails are so obvious. They really are.

[00:24:00] You see it coming a mile away and you're like, yeah, fake tears, yelling face, shock face. Full face. You're just like, stop. Stop while you're at stop. Do me a favor. Just stop. Mm hmm. Oh, yeah. It's been a delight, man. I, I think I've said all my two cents. It's been fun catching up with you. I think I'm going to put a stake in this vampire's heart.
