[00:00:15] The Villains of the Indiana Jones Saga.
[00:01:22] I just, I just rewatched for sure the last one, um, this last week. Two and a half hours long, my only hang up, not even a hang up, was like, I don't know if they were just trying to keep people interested, but it seemed there was an extra level, extra amount of adventure and action. It was like five theme park rides. Oh yeah, kind of like unnecessarily either long or extra sequences to make it two and a half hours long. It didn't need to be two and a half hours long.
[00:01:46] Um, and, uh, you know, time travel, that's kind of a new thing for indie. But again, if you filter it through the lens of a 1930s, although in this case it was Vietnam and the moon landing, but that sort of genre of movie, it seemed to, it seemed to fit. And I, I didn't really have a huge problem with it. No, I enjoyed it. It's very pulpy. Very. The time travel fits. Yeah. It fits.
[00:02:16] Yeah. And, and the fact that it, it, the purpose of the device brought people only to the same one place in time. It wasn't just go wherever you want. It was Archimedes looking for help from the future. Yeah. That's what happens when Hannibal messes with time, man. Yeah. Yeah. Great. Yeah. That was some, that was really good, good casting too. That was fun. Dr. Jones. Get him.
[00:02:47] You stole it. Then you stole it. And then I stole it. Fasten your seatbelts. There might be some templates. Yeah. Yeah. Julian Glover was just in a Bond movie that same year. He comes over and does Walter Donovan in The Last Crusade. I can't imagine.
[00:03:11] I mean, you can say Admiral Veers and all that, but I'm like, no, I'm, I'm thinking Indiana Jones when I see Julian Glover's face. He had Mads Mikkelsen as a Bond villain. Yeah. Right. Who would it guess? Mads Mikkelsen gets to be at the beginning of one Bond and at the end of Indiana Jones. I mean, there's the symmetry there. It's pretty cool.
[00:03:35] I said it on Top Men, but I love the fact that the Nazis get clowned by being, that's just so perfect on so many levels. And you love Boyd Hallbrook's comeuppance. It's just magical. Right. Right. All that stuff is just great.
[00:04:36] It's a movie on being as good as its villain. And so for me, Rene Belloc, Major Tot, Mala Ram, Walter Donovan, and Hergen Kaller. Those are just the most cunning yet shameless antagonists with the diabolical schemes.
[00:05:14] Crystal Skull. Eh. The villains in the story, they're Russians. How many, you know, they portray the Russians like they were on freaking like Get Smart. Yeah. Yeah. She is totally going for Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle. Yeah. You tell us where the Crystal Skullies. Okay, Natasha, where's Boris? You know. Yeah. I'm like, I look at it now and I'm like, eh, you know.
[00:05:43] I want to know. I want to know. Tell me. I'm ready. I want to know. But not how they made, they made that, that allusion to Hitler. Trying, because, you know, we all know Hitler was into it. And then you see him in Last Crusade and he's literally about to shit his pants. He's like, oh my fucking God.
[00:06:12] I'm just seeing the guy in the stick. Well, no. The thing is, like, they make the illusion of Hitler trying to get all these mystical objects. Yeah. And that's the thing. That's how he wants to achieve world power. Yeah. Yeah. You know, one, three, and five are, you know, those things, you know. For all the shit that Dial got, that's why I really dug the villain. I was like, see, he doesn't want to just rule the world. He wants to be the next Farrar.
[00:06:39] And, like, see, that, every other villain storyline they spend time on, they often will just waste time with, like, oh, I got picked on. I got bullied. It's like, no. You hate him the minute he comes out. Mads Mikkelsen in this movie, he's just, like, he's like, I'm not, you know, I have to go back in time and make things right. Yeah. And I'm like, whoa. I hate my current existence. I will do it. Yeah.
[00:07:08] Mads Mikkelsen, the menacing mathematician. With all of those, with all of those, the ones that involve the Nazis, you notice the, there's always a collaborator. Yeah. That's Kellogg in the first one. There's the one Turkish guy. Donovan. Donovan. And actually, and actually, Elsa is Austrian, not German.
[00:07:37] There's also the Turkish guy at the library in Les Crusades during the boat chase. No, but no, no, no. He's protecting the ark. He's protecting the ark. Oh, he's protecting the ark. Yes. That's right. And then the. Yeah. And then the various American characters. I mean, Matt Mikkelsen's character is straight out of Operation Paperclip. Yeah. Yeah. That was creepy.
[00:08:04] So Spielberg, in terms of turning the, the, the wrath of, and all of them go to terrible ends, turning the, if not the most terrible end. Spielberg turning the, the wrath of his filmmaking prowess on, not just the villains, but those who apologize for, or collaborate with, or, or find themselves siding on, or selfish or convenient reasons with.
[00:08:33] Well, Elsa. The life of humanity. Yeah. Elsa dies, you know, trying to get the grail. Yeah. Yeah. She, and he tries to get one good job, you know, job card. The one thing that gets me is if you watch, if you watch Raiders, the guy who played Toph in that movie was a guy by the name of Roland Lacey. He's a well-known British actor. Yeah. And I just watched him. I just watched him in an episode of Blackadder. Oh, wow.
[00:09:03] Yeah. He was also in, he's, he's been in a lot of movies. He was in How I Won the War with John Lennon. Just that evil grin. He's just like, it's so hard to seem as anything else. When my neighbor, my neighbor moved next door, he had like horn-rimmed glasses and like a short haircut. And my mother said, Jay, I think the guy from Raiders of the Lost Ark moved next door. What do you mean? He looks like the fucking guy. He looks like the guy with the hand, like the thing on his. Does he have a burnt hand? That would be ironic.
[00:09:32] I walked outside and I saw him. I was like, oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit. But yeah, that's what happened. Hello. Would you like to see my scar? It's very interesting. Wow. We meet again for a night. The Americans, you're all the same. Always overdressing for the wrong occasions.
[00:10:17] The thing that gets me, Mike, is when you watch the beginning, you see the guy with the fedora and the thing. Indy's looking at him and you're like thinking to yourself, now you know where he patterns himself after. When the guy says, nice job, kid. And he puts the bra. Yeah. Yeah. I was like, holy shit. The unofficial mentor. That guy kind of looked like Harrison Ford a little bit too, I thought. Yeah. Yes. Yes, he did.
[00:10:44] If we think of Uncle Randy when I had Indiana, you should have seen what I did to Trebek's mom. We'll return after these messages.
