[00:00:31] The number one movie in America. I heard that too.
[00:00:35] Expendables 2 is rip-roaring, insane, action-packed fun.
[00:00:39] Nice touch.
[00:00:41] The Expendables 2. Now playing.
[00:00:45] Let's do what we do.
[00:00:47] With this much muscle in one movie, you need to see it on the big screen.
[00:00:56] Hey, come on!
[00:00:58] This will solve all your problems.
[00:01:08] Expendables 3, rated BD-13. Now playing in theaters.
[00:01:18] First of taking possession of nuclear missiles.
[00:01:21] If these babies go off, it's on you.
[00:01:23] Any questions?
[00:01:25] Get in losers! We're going shopping!
[00:01:28] Good to be back.
[00:01:30] Yup.
[00:01:37] I got you.
[00:01:39] That's what I'm talking about.
[00:01:43] Expendables. Definitely rated R.
[00:01:46] September 22nd.
[00:02:34] Hey guys.
[00:02:35] Hey! How the hell you been?
[00:02:37] How the hell have you been?
[00:02:38] I'm okay. I'm okay.
[00:02:40] The editing work's been a real drag.
[00:02:42] But I've been working on other projects.
[00:02:43] I'm working on a script for something I want to make.
[00:02:46] And we're trying to put together some sort of show revolving around my website.
[00:02:50] But not like a podcast.
[00:02:52] But like a show we can pitch to like television stations and stuff.
[00:02:55] Hey, you know, there is no limit to all this multimedia.
[00:02:58] It's not anywhere as cryptic as it was in the 2000s and 2010s.
[00:03:02] Talking Apes is also a great chat that Mark is on.
[00:03:05] And yeah, I haven't done that for a while.
[00:03:07] I appear every once in a while.
[00:03:09] It was something I created, but I'm no longer on.
[00:03:11] So also on the show, we got the Western Wonder from Pick a Flick podcast.
[00:03:15] This is our first collab, but you've been doing all kinds of sketch comedy and you're
[00:03:21] very active on Twitter.
[00:03:23] Very much so.
[00:03:24] I was like, it's time to actually kind of do this.
[00:03:29] You've done two grumpy music snobs as well.
[00:03:31] Yeah.
[00:03:32] So no music podcast that I've done.
[00:03:33] I plan to revive it soon because it's been a long time.
[00:03:37] Trust me.
[00:03:38] Yeah, I do five shows.
[00:03:39] It is hard to see which one, you know, it's like a bunch of plants and which one do you
[00:03:44] water more?
[00:03:46] Yeah, right.
[00:03:47] It's like, well, I guess the plan has to be sacrificed because I love the dog more
[00:03:51] and the dog definitely needs to be fed and watered.
[00:03:55] For sure.
[00:03:56] Okay.
[00:03:56] Johnny from JohnnySweet13 YouTube channel.
[00:03:59] I take it.
[00:04:00] You are always balls to the wall action movie fan.
[00:04:04] Oh yeah.
[00:04:04] Wait for the jump, man.
[00:04:06] Yeah.
[00:04:06] Yo, Mike and John were some of the regulars on here and I just started out of bloom in
[00:04:12] a few mystery science theater groups and it kind of just went from there.
[00:04:14] And then after a while it was like, we start, we got to give some love to the sci-fi operas,
[00:04:19] space operas, the horror anthologies and the action epics.
[00:04:22] Yeah.
[00:04:23] Many times, as we mentioned Stallone in the eighties, we have yet to do all his three ginormous
[00:04:27] franchises.
[00:04:28] So let this be the one to top it off.
[00:04:30] This is the one you chose.
[00:04:32] You know, I think it's a good segue.
[00:04:34] You know, there's people who are coming in who are new to him and discovering his eighties
[00:04:37] movies.
[00:04:37] You know, it's kind of like any, whatever era of Star Wars you pick.
[00:04:40] And then there's the ones who are coming in who either thought it was a fun return or
[00:04:44] just were like, why bother?
[00:04:47] You know, I love you, dude.
[00:04:48] Why'd you do this?
[00:04:48] And so it's, don't get me wrong.
[00:04:50] It is divisive, but much like the purge and some of the other ones, we're going to validate
[00:04:54] everybody here, you know?
[00:04:56] I mean, I like the X-Men movies as well getting to.
[00:04:59] It's just, you made me, I had to sit through the fourth one again.
[00:05:01] And that.
[00:05:02] I told you, you didn't have to.
[00:05:04] But I wasn't remembering it.
[00:05:06] I might have been useless to you.
[00:05:07] I see.
[00:05:08] Well, I was running out of time.
[00:05:10] You told me I shouldn't watch the fourth one.
[00:05:12] So I'm like, oh, okay.
[00:05:13] I just predicted you were going to give me shit the next day and say, oh my God, why'd
[00:05:18] I do that?
[00:05:19] So, but hey, there's, there's an audience for everything.
[00:05:22] You know, this is not an even franchise for everybody.
[00:05:24] There's going to be different takes.
[00:05:25] So we're going to do the usual five-star reviews.
[00:05:28] I'm going to unleash some trivia for us and then we'll divide it into some section, drive
[00:05:33] the soundtrack or premise if we want.
[00:05:35] Expendables have been everywhere.
[00:05:36] I mean, they got referenced on Saturday Night Live.
[00:05:39] John Van Dam was on Jay Leno, which Jimmy Kimmel did one when the first one came out.
[00:05:45] Mad TV guys did an internet parody with Will Sasso as Stallone.
[00:05:49] The Asylum did a knockoff one called Mercenaries.
[00:05:52] And there was supposed to be an Expendables rumored that it's so funny how, how many people
[00:05:57] just like were like, oh, hell no.
[00:05:58] Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton were like, no thanks.
[00:06:02] And Charlize Theron was like, that's a rumor.
[00:06:05] The Expendables have been everywhere.
[00:06:07] There's an extended cut of the first one that adds more of the villains hamming it up and
[00:06:11] different soundtrack edits.
[00:06:13] The third one had more unrated cursing by Mel Gibson and more fight scenes.
[00:06:19] You know, I've been here from the start.
[00:06:21] I was there in IMDb when people were trolling each other, complaining about PG-13 versus our
[00:06:25] ratings.
[00:06:26] The whole franchise has been compared from everything from Mission Impossible to
[00:06:32] The Wild Geese.
[00:06:33] And it's just so funny how it survived.
[00:06:36] Like people just wanted to just go out and see it.
[00:06:39] It was critic proof.
[00:06:40] It kind of gave Terry Crews a star boost.
[00:06:43] Randy Couture has been a direct video action star since.
[00:06:46] Bruce Willis had a falling out and got replaced by Harrison Ford.
[00:06:50] Or is that around the time you started getting sick?
[00:06:53] Yeah.
[00:06:53] Yeah.
[00:06:54] He was having the dementia, acting in inappropriate interviews.
[00:06:56] These movies have like references to other movies like Desperado, Die Hard, Clear and
[00:07:02] Present Danger, Commando, Executive Decision, and even James Bond.
[00:07:06] Some of the original casting options for the first one were Danny Trejo, but that was apparently
[00:07:10] a ploy to get more Latino viewers.
[00:07:12] So that's a shame that that worked out that way.
[00:07:14] That's kind of exploited.
[00:07:15] Sandra Bullock and Brittany Murphy prior to her death were attached.
[00:07:18] Forrest Whitaker and Bing Kingsley were supposed to be the villains.
[00:07:21] Keanu Reeves was rumored to be attached, but he wasn't on a good standing with producer
[00:07:25] Avi Lerner.
[00:07:27] Same thing with Steven Seagal.
[00:07:28] You saw people going, oh, he should be in it.
[00:07:30] But, you know, Avi Lerner had gotten tired of his misbehavior, so that wasn't going to
[00:07:35] work out.
[00:07:36] Parts 2 and Free, I'm not kidding.
[00:07:38] Like you can go throughout the internet on this.
[00:07:40] I helped out with the Wicca.
[00:07:41] Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Nick Cage, John Travolta, Charlie Sheen, and even Jack Nicholson
[00:07:47] as a villain were attached to Parts 2 and Free.
[00:07:49] And Clint Eastwood was rumored to be directing one of the movies.
[00:07:53] So it's just like, man, they...
[00:07:56] That would have been interesting.
[00:07:57] It would have been interesting when he had approached it like his Dirty Horror movies,
[00:08:00] or would he have been serious like the Iwo Jima films?
[00:08:04] 50 Cent was actually rumored from the start, but then they replaced him with Terry Crews
[00:08:07] when the internet had a backlash.
[00:08:08] But he joined Part 4 later on because he and Stallone worked on the Escape Line movies.
[00:08:12] So I'll just go around a bit.
[00:08:14] Hey, what...
[00:08:14] Johnny Five, can I call you?
[00:08:17] What would you say the overall appeal?
[00:08:20] What did this saga get right and get wrong about appealing to the older crowd with the new crowd?
[00:08:27] Well, what they did with the older crowd was they gave us our action heroes again, you know?
[00:08:36] They gave us...
[00:08:37] Even though Arnold was the governor at the time, he still had time to get in the movie, you know?
[00:08:45] Right.
[00:08:46] They just exchanged dialogue.
[00:08:49] But guess what?
[00:08:51] It was done in a way that you could have Stallone and his crew get in on the action.
[00:09:00] Because think about it.
[00:09:01] That's what they got right.
[00:09:03] You know, everybody...
[00:09:06] Everybody had their time to shine in that movie.
[00:09:09] Each character.
[00:09:10] Okay, yeah.
[00:09:11] You know, what was it?
[00:09:13] Vanny Couture.
[00:09:14] Talking about...
[00:09:15] Yeah, this was his first big one, yeah.
[00:09:18] Yeah, Vanny Couture.
[00:09:19] Talking about his ear, you know?
[00:09:21] Yeah.
[00:09:21] I gotta tell you something about Part 3, though.
[00:09:23] You know, the one thing that they got wrong with...
[00:09:26] Yeah, the one...
[00:09:27] The only thing that got wrong with Part 3 was when Stallone listened to the audience and
[00:09:34] they made it PG-13, you know?
[00:09:37] It's so weird.
[00:09:38] Even Chuck Norris was opting for that.
[00:09:40] I'm like, are you serious right now?
[00:09:43] No.
[00:09:44] That's the thing, too.
[00:09:44] Yeah.
[00:09:45] In the second one, they was going to do PG-13 because Chuck Norris didn't like the language.
[00:09:52] So...
[00:09:52] And then I saw people complaining either way.
[00:09:54] That's what was also confusing is, like, they didn't like the CGI gore, but then they're
[00:09:59] like, oh, it's not the same without it.
[00:10:00] I'm like, I don't know what people want anymore.
[00:10:04] Yeah, Stallone rewrote the script and then, you know, took the language out, kept the violence
[00:10:08] in.
[00:10:09] We got an R rating for Part 2.
[00:10:12] But for Part 3, you know, it was PG-13 and that turned people off.
[00:10:19] And then there was a leak online of the whole movie.
[00:10:22] And then, you know...
[00:10:24] Gently getting his...
[00:10:26] Like a thyroid condition, something like that.
[00:10:28] Yeah, yeah.
[00:10:29] He had passed in...
[00:10:31] Yeah, hyperthyroidism.
[00:10:32] And that's why he was barely in the last one.
[00:10:35] And they kept wanting to get Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen and film it in Hong Kong as a compromise
[00:10:41] since they don't do Hollywood anymore and they could never work it out.
[00:10:44] They either just thought the role was too stupid and not a good use of their brand or
[00:10:48] just...
[00:10:48] Just real hectic.
[00:10:49] And that's why it took a while for them to have Tony Jaa join in Part 4.
[00:10:54] I do have to say, though, the new guys who they added for Part 4, they have a decent resume.
[00:10:59] And Levy Tran was in the newer MacGyver show, but I didn't feel like they had anything to
[00:11:04] do.
[00:11:05] That was my biggest beef.
[00:11:06] Does anybody know why the younger people from 3 didn't appear in 4?
[00:11:13] Because that would be the natural progression to me, is you have all the older guys, you
[00:11:18] have all the older...
[00:11:19] And that's what the expendables are.
[00:11:21] But if you wanted to go towards younger people in 4, which is what it seemed like they wanted
[00:11:27] to do, bringing them in...
[00:11:28] Yeah, especially with how Glenn...
[00:11:30] Why didn't they bring the characters we already knew and kind of liked?
[00:11:34] Because I liked those younger guys in 3.
[00:11:36] I did too.
[00:11:37] And everyone bashed them.
[00:11:39] And I'm like, really?
[00:11:41] Sorry, go ahead.
[00:11:42] There was a longer time period between 3 and 4 than there was between the first three
[00:11:46] movies.
[00:11:47] Well, and it didn't help that Glenn Howell's career all of a sudden skyrocketed.
[00:11:52] He was in Twisters.
[00:11:54] Yeah, he was in Twisters, but he was in Top Gun 2, and then all these other dark comedies.
[00:11:59] But yeah, the sequels do kind of, unfortunately, kind of go into the lesser moments of the Rocky
[00:12:03] movies at times, where they're...
[00:12:05] He just can't help it.
[00:12:06] Like, he gets...
[00:12:07] I mean, I take it you guys have already heard about the behind-the-scenes story with Tulsa
[00:12:11] King, how he was treating extras very rudely.
[00:12:14] He's one of those...
[00:12:15] You know, Eddie Murphy can keep rebounding each comeback, but he's one of those...
[00:12:19] Once he gets a success, he doesn't know what to do with success and gets spoiled.
[00:12:24] So I think your point, he needed to just pass it on to other people.
[00:12:29] Because I think that was part of why Part 3 and 4 had such a delay.
[00:12:33] It's just he...
[00:12:34] He and the Millennium Films guys were just not getting along after a while, and then he
[00:12:38] was growing tired and wanted to do something else.
[00:12:41] I don't know, man.
[00:12:42] It's a puzzle.
[00:12:44] But it's all good.
[00:12:44] We're here to keep this light and positive.
[00:12:47] We're going to pass it off to the Pick-A-Flick.
[00:12:50] How are you?
[00:12:51] And what...
[00:12:52] How do you sum up this?
[00:12:54] Doing good, man.
[00:12:56] So the franchise has a whole kind of dips in quality to me.
[00:13:00] Like, first two, I was in it.
[00:13:02] Those types of movies that you just turn your brain off.
[00:13:06] So with the first one being like great solid introduction to these new characters and these
[00:13:11] locations, these action sequences, it's just balls to the wall.
[00:13:15] It's cheesy at points, but there's good chemistry all around.
[00:13:18] The second one just kind of takes it up to new heights.
[00:13:21] And I was actually pleasantly surprised because I kind of came up with it.
[00:13:24] I actually saw it in theaters.
[00:13:26] Oh, wow.
[00:13:27] Lucky for you.
[00:13:28] Lucky for you.
[00:13:30] It was packed, but I saw other people being like, this is stupid.
[00:13:35] Right.
[00:13:35] As if they didn't know what they were in for.
[00:13:37] So I don't know.
[00:13:38] Yeah.
[00:13:39] And the way that the sequel was just expanded on the action sequences and all the kind
[00:13:44] of dip and wane.
[00:13:46] I really did like how the chemistry between all the characters worked.
[00:13:50] And the cast kind of just started getting more and more effect on these older action
[00:13:54] stars milling in and then utilizing the more younger actors.
[00:14:01] And then closer to the end with the fourth one, it was just a nothing burger of a letdown.
[00:14:05] I was, I was expecting that ensemble to come back and it was just mostly people I'm not
[00:14:11] really familiar with.
[00:14:12] Like I've probably seen their face in something actually related to the tour, but I'm just
[00:14:15] going to put a main to it.
[00:14:16] Even Dolph was barely used and you can tell he's trying and I'm like, well, why wouldn't
[00:14:21] you have them at least punch a guy?
[00:14:23] It's just, I don't know.
[00:14:25] It's kind of like when I see, I don't know, a great comedian like Sarah Silverman or Jim
[00:14:30] Gaffigan and they appear in an ensemble, but they're literally half a scene.
[00:14:34] And it's like, I love it when they stretch themselves.
[00:14:37] I love these comedians, but don't not give them something cool to do.
[00:14:41] You know, it's kind of like, and I get it.
[00:14:44] I get that time pays, but I'll even see it with some of the office comedians where it's
[00:14:48] like, ah, they're so good.
[00:14:49] You didn't give them the last line in the scene.
[00:14:51] Come on.
[00:14:52] They have to have a retort.
[00:14:54] It's just, it's part of their, it'd be like if, I don't know, I know Jim Carrey's coming
[00:14:58] back for the last Sonic.
[00:14:59] It takes a lot to coax a guy out of retirement, but if, if he just stands there in the background,
[00:15:04] I'm going to be disappointed.
[00:15:05] You've got to have Jim Carrey be one of his alter egos, you know, it's kind of like, so I,
[00:15:10] I'm with you guys.
[00:15:11] There, there is a bit of this in some of these, there's, there's a lot of what ifs or wasted
[00:15:16] opportunity, but we'll, we'll decide in our final rankings, what, what they succeeded at
[00:15:20] most.
[00:15:21] Gil, so how many of these did you see at the time versus now?
[00:15:24] Well, I've seen the first three.
[00:15:26] Did you grow up watching war and Western movies with your folks and uncles?
[00:15:31] Well, not with my folks, no, but I, I did see a lot of like action eighties movies and
[00:15:36] stuff like that.
[00:15:37] Let's get hairy.
[00:15:39] You know, well, you know, like, uh, Arnold Schwarzenegger and raw deal and, you know,
[00:15:45] uh, Stallone and Cobra.
[00:15:50] Oh man.
[00:15:51] Fun, fun stuff.
[00:15:52] Even what's funny is some of the lesser direct to video movies that Bruce is in, uh, totally
[00:15:58] still feel like he's on an expendable set telling recruits what to do.
[00:16:02] It's just like, uh, dude, wasted opportunity.
[00:16:06] Um, and yeah, there's plenty of fun ones out there and I'm glad you guys brought up some
[00:16:12] of the direct video icons.
[00:16:13] Cause unfortunately they, they kind of got poo-pooed at the time, but now they're in a
[00:16:18] to be an Amazon prime age.
[00:16:20] They're kind of getting a resurrection, getting like the fifth wave of fandom, if you will.
[00:16:27] I wonder what fan clubs are like now with these action stars, you know, has like, does anyone
[00:16:31] actually still mail autographs now still?
[00:16:33] Or did it just DM?
[00:16:37] Yeah.
[00:16:37] It was more disappointed by the screenwriters.
[00:16:39] Cause like Mark Adams has been like attached to like active valor and done some other war
[00:16:44] movies and TV shows and VOD action movies.
[00:16:48] And Kurt Wimmer, you guys would know from writing action movies like salt street Kings and equilibrium.
[00:16:53] Yeah.
[00:16:54] I'm glad I missed it in theaters.
[00:16:55] I'm sorry.
[00:16:55] And I suck.
[00:16:56] Cause I really wanted to see it, but it was part four was a movie that basically opens
[00:17:02] really badly.
[00:17:03] That scene with Megan Fox is just dumb and stupid.
[00:17:07] Yeah.
[00:17:07] And yeah, we don't know why they're not just cause she's bad in it.
[00:17:12] Cause I don't mind making Fox as an actress, but yeah, she, it's just a really bad scene.
[00:17:17] Whining for no reason.
[00:17:19] And you're like, no good scenes at all in the movie and the action scenes don't work because
[00:17:23] you can, it's such bad green screen.
[00:17:26] You could tell every shot was rated R, but it was probably just for the language briefly
[00:17:31] because the violence, I can even tell.
[00:17:34] So yeah, more concerned with the rating than they did an actual story.
[00:17:38] When in reality, if people didn't make a big deal out of three, nobody would have cared.
[00:17:43] No one would have given a shit.
[00:17:44] Yeah.
[00:17:45] And 50 cent doesn't get anything to do.
[00:17:47] And I've seen it be so good on the TV show power and some of these other crooked cop gangster
[00:17:54] films he's been in.
[00:17:55] And I'm just like, he mows down a few guys, but it's just so there's just no energy.
[00:17:59] And Scott Wogg has been a decent stuntman turned action star on other stuff like act
[00:18:04] of valor, which hadn't real Navy seals and need for speed.
[00:18:07] Those were decent BC grade movies.
[00:18:10] And you're just like, was he just, was there just really that too many cooks?
[00:18:13] I don't get it.
[00:18:14] Also no good villain.
[00:18:16] No good villain.
[00:18:17] Do you think it's suffered from the, uh, you know, the, the thing that sequels usually
[00:18:22] suffer from, which is each one has a progressively smaller budget.
[00:18:28] Yes.
[00:18:28] Yes.
[00:18:28] And no, I mean, everybody just looked like they didn't know what to do after all.
[00:18:32] Like you give the new guys something to do.
[00:18:35] They've been good in other stuff, but there, they just kind of sucked.
[00:18:38] You're just like, okay, who are they again?
[00:18:39] And why are we spending time seeing Megan Fox and Statham in bed?
[00:18:43] And there's zero chemistry.
[00:18:45] They're playing around with each other's knives.
[00:18:47] Schwarzenegger didn't show up in four, did he?
[00:18:49] No, no.
[00:18:51] And they didn't make good use of Tony Jaa or Ico Uwais from the raid.
[00:18:55] And you're just like, what?
[00:18:57] Yeah.
[00:18:57] He just gets killed off of Berkeley.
[00:18:59] Yeah.
[00:19:00] It was like, and like we've said, I'm trying to keep it positive, but I mean.
[00:19:05] We'll return after these messages.

[00:20:22] Check them out.
[00:20:28] Well, you know, this fourth one that you guys are talking about sounds to me like they're
[00:20:32] moving more and more away from the people that were originally in the film.
[00:20:36] Well, in the first, you know, three films.
[00:20:38] It was wild though how people were hyping up.
[00:20:40] I wonder what will happen next.
[00:20:41] I'm like, there won't be a next.
[00:20:43] It flopped at the box office hard.
[00:20:46] Yeah, there is no fit.
[00:20:48] It basically felt like they didn't understand what the attraction to the Expendables were.
[00:20:53] And so now, hey, let's get some young, good looking guys in here.
[00:20:56] Young, good looking woman here.
[00:20:57] I mean, let's face it.
[00:20:59] What happens when Stallone's character is supposedly killed off?
[00:21:04] Spoiler alert.
[00:21:06] They don't bring one of the other ones up.
[00:21:08] They don't think, oh, well, you know, maybe Jason.
[00:21:10] Next in line.
[00:21:11] Yeah.
[00:21:11] They give it to a totally new person.
[00:21:15] And it's like a beautiful woman.
[00:21:16] Like that's going to be the draw for the Expendables.
[00:21:20] Yeah.
[00:21:21] They didn't understand what these movies were.
[00:21:23] I don't know what was up.
[00:21:24] It just seemed like everybody also just looked notoriously out of shape.
[00:21:28] And I think it's just so I mainly blame the cinematographer because.
[00:21:33] And the director somewhat, because it just seemed like they were trying so hard, like all the points you guys have said, trying to get it done.
[00:21:39] But then the way they would frame them, they just didn't even look like they were ready for combat.
[00:21:43] And so I'm glad you guys brought up the bomb point, because then it's just like, OK, where's the tension there?
[00:21:49] They're stalling for time.
[00:21:50] There's not even a close up of a timer.
[00:21:52] This sucks.
[00:21:54] Come on.
[00:21:54] And just I was going to say, well, movie, a movie three minutes usually lasts for like six to nine minutes.
[00:21:59] Yeah.
[00:22:00] They were even supposed to get a TV show at one point with the one of the head writer of NCIS LA attached to it.
[00:22:07] I'm glad they didn't go that way.
[00:22:08] That would have been just too dumb.
[00:22:09] I do think the Expendables have helped the marketing thing, because usually if it's not Taken or John Wick or Equalizer, you can kind of get an Expendables gist, especially if it's an all star cast of like men on a mission.
[00:22:20] I definitely get that with how they do the trailers for stuff like the new Star Trax and FBI's.
[00:22:25] It's like there are any other 80s, 90s throwback.
[00:22:29] There's that kind of gist of, hey, you know, we're we're doing a love letter to the cinema.
[00:22:36] You guys probably grew up with the last 30 years.
[00:22:39] But at the same time, I don't know, I I think you guys have we have kicked the dead horse here.
[00:22:47] I just the people who were involved with it did understand it, but weren't in love with it after a while.
[00:22:53] And the people who would have been available back then became unavailable.
[00:22:58] And then I'm just like, OK.
[00:23:01] And I think, yeah, the budget dried up after a while to where they were just like, I mean, I knew people who would have loved to have seen part four.
[00:23:08] But again, it just came out so late.
[00:23:12] You know, interest dries up if you take more than three years, you know, like they were supposed to even do a sequel.
[00:23:17] I honestly don't remember seeing any kind of advertisement for Expendables for myself.
[00:23:22] I mean, I'm sure it's probably out there, but much like Horizon with Kevin Costner.
[00:23:26] You're like, where did the marketing go?
[00:23:28] Did you want this to flop?
[00:23:30] Because you're not going to get your money back.
[00:23:32] The only advertisement they did for Expendables for was when they said it is rated R, you know, that's all.
[00:23:40] That's all they ever focused on.
[00:23:43] Yeah.
[00:23:44] And I think to Mark's earlier point, they were so based around that.
[00:23:48] And it's just like, no.
[00:23:51] What people don't understand when they make movies like this is a movie like this needs good reviews.
[00:23:57] And the first Expendables got decent reviews, I believe.
[00:24:00] The second one.
[00:24:01] But I'm looking right now at Rotten Tomatoes and Expendables 4 has a 13 percent.
[00:24:07] It was dead in the water.
[00:24:08] And it's not like it's a big, big celebrities.
[00:24:11] And it got 13 percent because, yeah, Stallone, all of them, there's still names.
[00:24:14] And now Stallone's even bigger because of Tulsa.
[00:24:16] But at the time, it wasn't like Stallone was the guy people were rushing out to see.
[00:24:22] But a good Stallone movie they might rush out to see because he had just done the Creed movies.
[00:24:26] Well, in the post, the early posters for it that they showed at Cannes Film Festival,
[00:24:31] back when Stallone was refusing to come back for a while,
[00:24:34] while he and the producer were patching up their relationship,
[00:24:38] they claimed, oh, Banderas and Statham are attached.
[00:24:43] It's like, well, yeah, no.
[00:24:44] Banderas is, again, Brosnan and the others have done plenty of other movies for Millennium Films,
[00:24:48] especially Dolph.
[00:24:49] But I think that's the other thing, too.
[00:24:51] I think Abby Lerner was so invested in still selling movies like he did in his Canon Films days.
[00:24:58] And it's like, dude, if people aren't cleared with those,
[00:25:02] they're not going to do the movie.
[00:25:04] You know, you can't sell a movie on people who don't want to do it
[00:25:07] or who haven't been told, hey, I would agree to come back.
[00:25:10] You know, it's just.
[00:25:12] I think everyone's got to find new business tactics.
[00:25:16] And when they're not using their film sets, instead of tearing it down,
[00:25:19] why not rent them out to other people?
[00:25:22] You know, shit.
[00:25:23] When you have a guy who's leading the pack
[00:25:26] and you find out he's not going to be in the movie,
[00:25:29] you don't want to go see the movie.
[00:25:31] And without Stallone, nobody's going to see the film.
[00:25:34] And now they're not going to.
[00:25:36] They're going to feel like, well, just because they say he's in it doesn't mean anything
[00:25:39] because they'll take him out halfway into the or a half hour into the movie.
[00:25:42] If he's not promoting it.
[00:25:44] Yeah, that's true.
[00:25:45] He didn't even promote it on any Tonight Show.
[00:25:47] Instead, he was talking Tulsa King and like, see, that's that's dumb.
[00:25:51] That means he's barely in it.
[00:25:53] Yeah.
[00:25:53] Well, you know, like he treated his direct video movies are late.
[00:25:56] Sorry, go ahead.
[00:25:58] I was just going to say that the draw for the first Expendables movies was you had
[00:26:04] Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Bruce Willis, you know, in this movie.
[00:26:08] But Bruce Willis and Schwarzenegger were just in and out in the first one.
[00:26:10] They didn't really do much of anything.
[00:26:12] It was just fun.
[00:26:13] So it was kind of like misleading.
[00:26:15] It was nostalgia mixed in with how the action was done in the wacky character one liners.
[00:26:20] But yeah, they they didn't hide the fact that they were only in one scene together, though.
[00:26:25] That was all over the place.
[00:26:26] They were only going to be in one scene together.
[00:26:28] So that wasn't really that misleading.
[00:26:32] Where the misleading nature.
[00:26:33] I just think Expendables 4 just kind of did.
[00:26:35] If there's anything that Rocky did so well that I wish more movies would incorporate it.
[00:26:40] The most you see is in classic 80s dance movies like Flashdance and Footloose is the montage sequence.
[00:26:48] You know, montage sequences are great, especially if you're showing people training or
[00:26:53] suiting up for combat like the commando suit up scene.
[00:26:56] And it's like it needed more of that.
[00:26:59] All those movies, I think, because like, you know, part two did a more fun over the top
[00:27:04] silly send up part three was more of the same.
[00:27:07] And part four, what it needed was just at least other than the cauliflower ear, they didn't
[00:27:11] really return to the whole.
[00:27:13] Hey, what makes them the Expendables?
[00:27:16] You know, other than that, they're mercs with a crappy social life is like they needed
[00:27:21] some cool out for vengeance thing or something, you know, like and like you guys said, when
[00:27:28] it wraps up, it's just not a good farewell at all.
[00:27:31] And they wanted more movies out of it.
[00:27:33] But again, everybody is just so static.
[00:27:36] And you're just like, OK, well, if you don't put in the work, it shows you can't hide, you
[00:27:42] know, bad acting or uninterested.
[00:27:45] You do an Expendables 5, who's going to be in it?
[00:27:47] Who the hell would be in it?
[00:27:48] Nobody.
[00:27:49] Nobody.
[00:27:49] Well, if four was as bad as you guys say, which I'm not doubting for a minute, it might
[00:27:56] be another 10 years before they even attempt another Expendables.
[00:28:01] They'll remake it.
[00:28:01] By then.
[00:28:02] Yeah.
[00:28:02] And then by then, maybe somebody else will come along.
[00:28:05] Robert Duvall.
[00:28:06] I don't know.
[00:28:08] You got to get a filmmaker who's really passionate about the first three coming in and saying,
[00:28:13] I got an idea.
[00:28:14] Yeah.
[00:28:14] That's the only way it's going to be reborn.
[00:28:16] And that's the only way you're going to get these actors excited about it because you
[00:28:19] really have to have these actors back.
[00:28:21] I think it also just didn't help that the marketing is just screwed up so much.
[00:28:25] So many movies are both limited releases and video on demand at the same time.
[00:28:33] And no one has figured out marketing unless it's an Oscar bait movie or Disney film.
[00:28:39] It just seems like I really dug the last Indiana Jones.
[00:28:41] But again, the marketing sucked.
[00:28:43] It didn't draw people into it.
[00:28:44] And it was so long.
[00:28:45] It's a good movie underneath it.
[00:28:47] But it's just like, OK, well, something didn't click with everybody.
[00:28:51] So what didn't click is all the haters.
[00:28:54] People were hating.
[00:28:55] No, don't get me wrong.
[00:28:55] There were plenty of Nazi trolls, too.
[00:28:57] But then there were people who would otherwise be interested.
[00:29:00] But it had been so long.
[00:29:01] So I'm just like, OK, they should have just focused on the plot, had Mickelson ham it up
[00:29:07] a bit, make people stoked for what's going to happen.
[00:29:11] I don't know.
[00:29:12] Well, you know, Edge of Tomorrow was a really good movie.
[00:29:16] But they had poor marketing.
[00:29:17] Same deal there.
[00:29:18] Yeah.
[00:29:18] People were like, the title sucks.
[00:29:20] Tom Cruise don't really do sci fi.
[00:29:23] And it's just like, what a cool movie by what's his name?
[00:29:26] Who did Usual Suspects and some of these other movies and Emily Blunt being a badass and Bill
[00:29:31] Paxson in one of his final roles.
[00:29:32] You're just like, yeah, it's just and Warner Brothers, same deal.
[00:29:36] Like they have had if you've seen the Superman lives documentary, they've had a bad marketing
[00:29:39] team for years and just relied on HBO repeats to make their budget up.
[00:29:43] And I'm just like, someone's got to give guys.
[00:29:45] You've got to either do a Jordan Peele or Christopher Nolan, where you're just you you tease people
[00:29:50] and you blow up the Internet for two months or the Expendables, I think, was a hit because
[00:29:55] everyone knew, like to Mark's earlier point, they knew what they were getting.
[00:29:58] It was hyped up on both the Internet and at the Super Bowls and everything.
[00:30:03] And there also wasn't much else out.
[00:30:05] I think that's the other thing, too.
[00:30:06] People keep changing their schedules to where it's just like, yeah, I don't really want to
[00:30:10] see a fun horror movie or a gritty action movie the same week that there's a amusing comedy
[00:30:15] or something.
[00:30:16] You know, it's just like they just don't share the slots very well.
[00:30:18] And it's just like, OK, well, you got to make way.
[00:30:23] I don't know.
[00:30:23] There's so many cinematic snobs and there's people always predicting the box office and
[00:30:28] people like us don't care.
[00:30:30] We care about quality.
[00:30:31] But there's so many people who if they who unfortunately are businessman minded, if they
[00:30:36] see a movie flops, they figure it's not very good, which is not ever the case, because then
[00:30:40] you look at cult hits like Blade Runner and everything that, again, were video store favorites,
[00:30:44] but did Jack Diddle in theaters.
[00:30:46] So, I mean, I approach this like I did every other fantasy movie that was trying to be like
[00:30:50] Lord of the Rings.
[00:30:51] It's just like just be you wrap it up just in case you don't get a sequel, but promise
[00:30:56] more.
[00:30:56] You know, with Expendables, maybe they should have planned from the start.
[00:30:59] In fact, I thought that's what they were doing with three.
[00:31:02] I thought so, too.
[00:31:03] Because he's got these actors.
[00:31:04] Yeah, these actors are older.
[00:31:06] How much longer are they going to be doing it?
[00:31:09] So I think making a transition.
[00:31:12] Yeah, I think I think you're right.
[00:31:14] I don't think they had an escape plan.
[00:31:15] There was no escape pod and it blew up bigger than anyone ever imagined.
[00:31:20] So again, Stallone's ego gets bigger.
[00:31:23] Statham starts getting busier again.
[00:31:26] Gently goes back and does a few other dramas, but isn't really invested in this.
[00:31:29] Which is a shame because this was kind of a fun.
[00:31:32] He had some fun lines in the first part, you know, as Yin Yang.
[00:31:37] And after a while since he was so uninterested.
[00:31:41] He needed more money for his family.
[00:31:43] But, you know, he's smaller.
[00:31:47] Oh, and see.
[00:31:48] Yeah, they had fun doing some height jokes and everything.
[00:31:54] And hell, they should have let Dolph Lundgren direct it.
[00:31:56] He's actually been pretty decent recently.
[00:32:00] And he's been making.
[00:32:01] I mean, you look at his resume.
[00:32:03] Not all of it is gold.
[00:32:04] Obviously, some of it is trashy.
[00:32:06] And some of it, there's some winners like Men of War and Army of One.
[00:32:11] And he's directed, done some directing lately.
[00:32:13] And he's done, he's played pretty nice with having an ensemble cast.
[00:32:17] He still gets his moment in the sun.
[00:32:19] And you never hear a bad thing about him being a dick or being unable to make a choice.
[00:32:24] Yeah, I was actually surprised to see him a few years ago showing up in TV shows and stuff.
[00:32:29] He was showing up in like the Green Arrow.
[00:32:31] Yeah, Green Arrow.
[00:32:32] And he was the seasonal villain.
[00:32:35] And when Expendables came out, he did a guest spot on Chuck for the premiere.
[00:32:38] And that was fun seeing him face off with Linda Hamilton.
[00:32:42] And I think that's just it.
[00:32:43] I think a lot of these, they hit.
[00:32:46] I think we have given as many theories as we can.
[00:32:49] Until someone makes a documentary about why it came and went, I really don't know.
[00:32:54] I just, I mean, I saw other people who were interested in him years ago.
[00:32:57] But because they weren't as keen on the sequels after a while,
[00:33:01] they just stopped airing when part four came out.
[00:33:03] So I think this is it.
[00:33:05] Like, the passage of time, stars not wanting to do it.
[00:33:08] And then the other people who would have been perfect, they again, they just,
[00:33:12] they were a decade too late.
[00:33:13] They just were like, we're not doing that anymore.
[00:33:15] I'll do conventions, but I'm not doing that kind of role anymore.
[00:33:19] At this point, I don't think anybody wants it anymore.
[00:33:21] And the only way you're going to get to it is if it's John McTiernan's next movie.
[00:33:27] Yeah, that's a good point too.
[00:33:29] And he's been teasing stuff for a while.
[00:33:31] And it seems like he's still struggling to get anyone to trust him with a movie again,
[00:33:35] which is a shame.
[00:33:36] What was the last movie he did?
[00:33:38] I can't.
[00:33:39] Rollerball.
[00:33:40] But that's not why he's having problems.
[00:33:42] No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
[00:33:42] It was basic with Travolta.
[00:33:45] Was it basic after Rollerball?
[00:33:47] Well, is it still not the reason he's having issues?
[00:33:49] The reason he's having issues is because he went away to jail for a while.
[00:33:52] Yeah, he was spying on a producer and doing illegal wiretapping and never apologized for
[00:33:58] any of it.
[00:33:58] It's all about Rollerball.
[00:33:59] So, but I mean, that's the other thing too, is I'm noticing a lot of these franchises and
[00:34:03] everything.
[00:34:04] They're bringing in nobody directors so that they can tell them what to do as opposed to
[00:34:08] bringing in talented directors.
[00:34:10] And it feels like to me, if you're going to take a franchise that's really successful,
[00:34:14] like the Star Wars stuff or the Expendables stuff or the Jurassic Park stuff.
[00:34:19] People actually can do something.
[00:34:20] Hire a director who earned the right to direct one of those.
[00:34:23] And make sure that's their actual genre instead of hiring people who aren't comfortable with
[00:34:29] the other genre, but will say yes, just because they're whores and they want money.
[00:34:32] You know, it's like, come on.
[00:34:34] You know, I just, your heart's got to be in it.
[00:34:37] It can't just be, I'll do my best.
[00:34:39] I was like, well, do you want to do this or not?
[00:34:42] Like, do you have a connection?
[00:34:44] Can you bring an interesting?
[00:34:46] And that's the problem that's going on nowadays.
[00:34:48] And this, this might cause some controversy right now, but that was the problem with The
[00:34:52] Last Jedi was here was a director who came in, looked at what they did with The Force
[00:34:56] Awakens and said, oh, everybody's talking about the, uh, the lightsaber, but I don't
[00:35:00] care about that.
[00:35:00] So I'm not going to, I'm not going to have it in my movie.
[00:35:02] Everybody's talking about this.
[00:35:03] I'm not going to, when what you're supposed to get is someone says, oh my God, I love The
[00:35:06] Force Awakens.
[00:35:07] Oh, we could do so much with the lightsaber.
[00:35:09] We could do so much, somebody who has ideas that are passionate about the franchise.
[00:35:14] Um, they're, that's why Creed was so good because Ryan Coogler was such a Rocky fan.
[00:35:22] That is true.
[00:35:23] And he focused on the drama instead of the fights.
[00:35:27] A lesser director would have been, what's the next choreography we can do, you know?
[00:35:31] Because he was such a fan, he understood what made them work.
[00:35:35] Right.
[00:35:36] Instead of, and, go ahead.
[00:35:39] I was going to say, you know, and that's the formula for Creed that they could have used
[00:35:43] for Expendables in a way, as far as a transitional, uh, thing goes along.
[00:35:50] Uh, you know what I mean?
[00:35:51] I guess I didn't see Creed, but, you know, it's more like they're following along in a family.
[00:35:56] What you've seen of it.
[00:35:57] Yeah.
[00:35:57] That, yeah.
[00:35:58] That's just it.
[00:35:59] Like, it wasn't, I'm trying to replace you, but I am.
[00:36:02] Um, it helped that he's related to Apollo Creed.
[00:36:07] So, I think this is it too.
[00:36:08] Like, they were so, these movies are campy, but they also still have moments of Stallone's,
[00:36:15] you know, 80s type drama and homages and tropes that are required for this type of genre
[00:36:20] I'm in on a mission type movie.
[00:36:22] And I think this is it.
[00:36:22] Like, people were so caught.
[00:36:25] It was almost kind of like playing an RPG, but then you decide, hey, the programming and,
[00:36:32] you know, glitches are too distracting.
[00:36:34] So, I'm going to pirate the game and make my own RPG game.
[00:36:38] You know, it's just, that's kind of what it felt like after a while.
[00:36:41] People would come up with some fun ones.
[00:36:42] What about Peter Weller?
[00:36:43] What about Ron Perlman?
[00:36:45] What about these other guys who've been in other movies with these stars?
[00:36:48] And it just seemed like no one on social media was paying any attention.
[00:36:53] Or again, they weren't in the budget.
[00:36:55] It's just like, well, it should be more than the budget.
[00:36:57] You should work this out.
[00:36:59] Like, look at the Purge movies.
[00:37:00] Those became a B-movie smash hit.
[00:37:03] Because Ethan Hawke took a pay cut.
[00:37:05] And it was a simple, low-budget franchise.
[00:37:07] And then surprise hit.
[00:37:09] And now they're able to make as many of those John Carpenter-esque movies as they want.
[00:37:13] So, it's just like, and they always make money.
[00:37:17] What are you liking or hating?
[00:37:18] It's just like, I think that's just it.
[00:37:21] Like, they made their money back for a while.
[00:37:24] But then, yeah, it's just, they got so concerned with the rating.
[00:37:28] And just even like, the littlest just thing just would set them off.
[00:37:34] And it's just like, well, I don't know.
[00:37:39] Because I don't know.
[00:37:40] There wasn't even a Comic-Con for like part four.
[00:37:43] Like there was with The Last Three.
[00:37:44] You look at some of those conventions they're doing where they're, it's just funny.
[00:37:48] And it's like, they have Van Damme, Stallone, Banderas, and Wesley, and even Ford talking about their characters.
[00:37:56] It's hysterical.
[00:37:58] And, I mean, hell.
[00:37:59] This popularized Shinedown, the band, a little more with Bites and Them in the trailer and the extended cut.
[00:38:05] But how many exploding arrows out of five, see what I did there, are you going to give these movies?
[00:38:11] I'll let the Pick a Flick podcast go first.
[00:38:16] Okay.
[00:38:17] So my arrow ratings out of five is kind of going to vary.
[00:38:20] The first one, I mean, I can give it a solid three.
[00:38:26] Like I said previously, I did enjoy the intro jokes with all these characters.
[00:38:30] These are lowbrow movies.
[00:38:30] It's all good.
[00:38:31] We get it.
[00:38:33] Lowbrow, lowbrow, lowbrow.
[00:38:34] You got to get there.
[00:38:35] The second one really surprised me.
[00:38:38] I could have sworn I saw it, but only in increments.
[00:38:41] But once I finally saw them pull, especially the climax where everything just went super crazy,
[00:38:46] that bumped it up to a three and a half for me.
[00:38:48] Just that final battle between Van Damme and Slone was crazy.
[00:38:52] Three.
[00:38:54] Three goes back to three out of five for me.
[00:38:57] Oh, good.
[00:38:58] Not as much as exciting as the previous one.
[00:39:00] And then with four, it's just like a one, one and a half.
[00:39:05] It's just like everything went flat.
[00:39:07] Nothing really happens.
[00:39:09] Yeah.
[00:39:10] The unstoppable feeling is gone.
[00:39:12] I'm with you.
[00:39:13] Yeah.
[00:39:13] That's cool.
[00:39:15] Mark, what are you going to rate?
[00:39:17] Well, I'll go from bottom to top.
[00:39:20] So the worst of the bunch, the one that I pretend doesn't even exist.
[00:39:26] So when people ask me about the Expendables, there were three.
[00:39:29] Because Expendables for zero stars.
[00:39:32] It's got a half star in my letterbox.
[00:39:34] Or zero, I guess what you say, arrows.
[00:39:38] It's got a half a star on my rating for letterbox just because you can't go any lower than that.
[00:39:44] My second least favorite would be the Expendables.
[00:39:48] But I still feel it's a lot of fun.
[00:39:50] It's a three star movie.
[00:39:50] Definitely.
[00:39:51] Or a three arrow.
[00:39:52] I keep saying arrow.
[00:39:53] A three arrow movie because it's, with the exception of the opening, I don't like the opening where they reveal Wesley Snipes.
[00:40:02] I think it's a poorly done action scene.
[00:40:04] But I feel like the rest of the movie, it's just, it's a lot of fun.
[00:40:08] Watch the extended edition.
[00:40:10] It's got, you know, some extra stuff in it.
[00:40:13] And I like the fact that they actually bring in the young guys.
[00:40:17] And then they do this whole thing where the young guys get captured.
[00:40:21] And the older guys now have to come save them.
[00:40:25] I think that's great because, you know, that's basically what these movies are to me.
[00:40:29] You know, showing the younger guys who are making bad action movies today how to do it.
[00:40:35] And then the number two would be the first Expendables.
[00:40:40] And I like the extended cut better than the original.
[00:40:44] But I think it's better paced.
[00:40:45] The only thing I don't like about it is after they blow up the mansion.
[00:40:50] The watchtower.
[00:40:51] Yeah.
[00:40:51] There's an action scene and they throw in this song.
[00:40:53] The Shinedown song.
[00:40:54] Yeah.
[00:40:55] Yeah, it doesn't work.
[00:40:56] But that was the first one.
[00:40:58] We didn't know what we were getting coming out of it or going into it.
[00:41:03] And it was just a really fun ride.
[00:41:04] That was a throwback to these great movies that I used to go to with my dad before I even fell in love with movies.
[00:41:10] And I go to after my parents divorced and I go to the 70s Slugfest.
[00:41:14] Yeah.
[00:41:15] These were the kind of movies he loved to see.
[00:41:17] And so it was a really great throwback for that.
[00:41:20] And so that would get four arrows.
[00:41:24] But here's the shocker.
[00:41:25] Come on.
[00:41:28] With Expendables 2, especially, I think I had it at four and a half.
[00:41:33] And then I rewatched it a couple of days ago and bumped it up to five.
[00:41:38] Because that movie is just, it's got an incredible opening.
[00:41:41] It's your commando.
[00:41:42] Just doesn't stop all the way through.
[00:41:45] And it's just, it's just fun.
[00:41:47] So yeah.
[00:41:47] So Expendables 2 is my favorite.
[00:41:48] All right.
[00:41:49] Perfect.
[00:41:49] Five stars.
[00:41:50] Wham.
[00:41:50] Blam.
[00:41:51] You've decimated the entire concentration camp.
[00:41:54] You've gotten rid of all the bad guys.
[00:41:58] Man.
[00:42:00] The sniper, Mark.
[00:42:01] He's coming for you.
[00:42:02] I will mention one more scene, though, since you, before we go on to the next person.
[00:42:07] One of my favorite moments in these movies that we didn't talk about is the very first
[00:42:11] guy.
[00:42:11] I believe it's the first guy who gets blown away.
[00:42:14] On that ship.
[00:42:15] Number one.
[00:42:16] Yeah.
[00:42:16] Because talk about setting up a tone for a movie.
[00:42:19] That guy is blown to bits.
[00:42:22] And at that point, you're like, holy crap, what are we in for?
[00:42:25] And it just.
[00:42:26] I could have, I could have swore he was bloated half.
[00:42:29] Yes, he was.
[00:42:30] It's just supposed to be the head, but it's his entire body.
[00:42:33] Yeah, and yeah, it was a very violent shot.
[00:42:36] It was quick.
[00:42:37] But now you're like, oh, my God, where are we going now?
[00:42:41] It's perfect.
[00:42:43] Yeah.
[00:42:43] And one of the actors playing the pirates.
[00:42:49] Yassine Joseph, he's gone on.
[00:42:52] Yeah, I'm in Joseph.
[00:42:53] He's gone on to have a big career.
[00:42:54] He's he's been in everything, including the newest.
[00:42:59] Justify TV show to, you know, Skin of X shows and everything.
[00:43:03] But like that was a big career boost for him.
[00:43:05] I this was a big comeback for everybody involved, even though it was Meyer.
[00:43:10] I mean, what's her name?
[00:43:12] Charisma Carpenter is the girlfriend.
[00:43:14] Stayed them.
[00:43:15] It's like you never really would have liked to see more of that.
[00:43:18] Yeah.
[00:43:18] A lot of people complained about it.
[00:43:20] But I'm like, see, by by movie free or for she needs to join the team and learn how to be a merc and make ends meet instead of just being the.
[00:43:27] You know, army wife.
[00:43:33] Yeah, no, it's it's got that there's lots to like.
[00:43:37] So, Jonathan, I will let you.
[00:43:42] Well, my my rating for the first movie.
[00:43:48] Well, because in the fact that the first movie is my favorite, my second favorite action movie of all time.
[00:43:54] Oh, shit.
[00:43:57] It's all about you.
[00:43:58] Five out of five.
[00:44:00] Yeah.
[00:44:01] Go blammo.
[00:44:04] Five out of five.
[00:44:06] You know, yeah.
[00:44:07] It gave you everything.
[00:44:09] You know, it gave you your fight scenes.
[00:44:11] You know, it gave you your.
[00:44:13] It gave you your excitement.
[00:44:15] You know, it was a really man's man movie.
[00:44:18] You know, you got your explosion.
[00:44:21] You got your fights.
[00:44:22] You know, you got a little bit of a love, a love, a love story.
[00:44:29] You know, a little bit of a love story with Statham and charisma.
[00:44:34] But other than that.
[00:44:35] Yeah, charisma.
[00:44:36] All right.
[00:44:37] Oh, man.
[00:44:39] Other than that, you know, you got a really good friend.
[00:44:46] A friend dynamic with the entire team, though.
[00:44:49] You know, you know, with the deal talking about the mission and, you know, you got into the story about the ear.
[00:44:56] The story that they heard a thousand times because you can tell they don't want to hear it no more.
[00:45:02] But, yeah, you know, you got a lot of that.
[00:45:06] And then you had Eric Roberts, who was like one of the coolest villains in all these movies.
[00:45:12] You know, one of the coolest villains ever.
[00:45:14] You know, if you get the movie right, you call Eric Roberts, you know, he'll do it.
[00:45:19] He was really good.
[00:45:20] It really was a way better role for him, even ironically, than in The Specialist.
[00:45:26] Because here he's just like, yeah, I'm a crooked CIA guy taking over my own country.
[00:45:31] The world's my oyster.
[00:45:32] Come and take it.
[00:45:33] Yeah.
[00:45:33] It's a lot of taunting this.
[00:45:36] Yeah.
[00:45:36] He felt like a Jason Bourne villain.
[00:45:38] And all the other guys were commando guys.
[00:45:40] Yeah.
[00:45:41] But the funny fact is that he was named after a U.S. president also.
[00:45:46] Yeah.
[00:45:47] James Monroe.
[00:45:48] Yeah.
[00:45:48] See, this is the fun with these villains.
[00:45:51] Yeah.
[00:45:51] Yeah.
[00:45:52] Yeah.
[00:45:52] That's it.
[00:45:53] So, yeah.
[00:45:53] Yeah.
[00:45:54] No.
[00:45:54] Yeah.
[00:45:54] First movie, five out of five.
[00:45:56] Second movie, a really good solid four out of five.
[00:46:00] Close to five.
[00:46:01] Because it was very fun to watch, man.
[00:46:05] Second movie, very fun.
[00:46:07] I mean, you know, like I said with Van Damme, you know.
[00:46:13] Yeah, he showed up.
[00:46:15] Well, once Van Damme showed up, then that's when the game really changed.
[00:46:22] I mean, the mood had changed.
[00:46:25] You know, it got serious after he showed up, you know.
[00:46:30] Yeah.
[00:46:30] Because, you know, it was fun from the beginning all the way up to, you know, when he made his
[00:46:37] debut.
[00:46:38] And then, yeah, you know, the content, the quality of the content shifted into a very
[00:46:45] serious.
[00:46:46] And then, yeah, we just had the everything that he did.
[00:46:54] Everything that he did, it led up to the fight scene between he and Stallone.
[00:46:59] You know, we agree.
[00:47:01] Yeah.
[00:47:01] There's a lot of kind of taunting also.
[00:47:03] I like how they don't have to spell it out, but they're still able to keep some reasonable
[00:47:07] suspense.
[00:47:08] And Brian Tyler's music score was really awesome.
[00:47:11] Yeah, we had the cities to collide, man.
[00:47:13] We had to, you know.
[00:47:16] And then, yeah, you got Statham and Scott Adkins fighting each other, too.
[00:47:21] So, you know.
[00:47:23] Yeah.
[00:47:23] Yeah, but they stuck that fight with Van Damme in the basement.
[00:47:26] It's like, it's not like they come together up in the airport and everything and the fight
[00:47:30] just happens naturally.
[00:47:31] They stick them where they're all by themselves, all alone.
[00:47:34] It's like nothing else to do.
[00:47:36] It just felt like it felt out of place, but yet it also felt perfect because it was a great
[00:47:40] fight scene.
[00:47:41] Oh, there's so much that you can do with a cliche.
[00:47:44] Yeah.
[00:47:44] In a way, it was like a video game boss battle.
[00:47:48] That's the best way to put it.
[00:47:50] That's how I took these movies is this is an interactive video game.
[00:47:53] It was.
[00:47:54] Yeah.
[00:47:55] But it's for a certain audience.
[00:47:56] If you don't like any of these 80s, 90s movies, you're already not going to like them.
[00:48:00] So, yeah.
[00:48:02] This is the best way to get.
[00:48:03] The Lone Van Damme video game boss battle, you know.
[00:48:06] You had your cut scenes and then you had the gameplay and then another cut scene afterwards.
[00:48:14] You know.
[00:48:15] Right.
[00:48:15] And the girl in that movie, you know.
[00:48:18] Respawn, Reheal.
[00:48:19] Yeah.
[00:48:19] You know, she, I read up on her.
[00:48:23] She became like an award-winning actress in China.
[00:48:26] So, you know.
[00:48:28] Yeah.
[00:48:28] I've seen her.
[00:48:29] Oh, what's her name?
[00:48:31] The gal who played Maggie in Expendables.
[00:48:33] Her name is.
[00:48:35] Her name is a Chinese name.
[00:48:36] I cannot remember.
[00:48:37] Yeah.
[00:48:37] You non.
[00:48:38] And she was one of the race car drivers in Speed Racer.
[00:48:43] And, yeah.
[00:48:44] She's been in Wolf Warrior with Scott Atkins and Frank Grillo.
[00:48:48] Those movies.
[00:48:51] But, yeah.
[00:48:52] She's part of the Beijing Film Festival.
[00:48:54] She.
[00:48:56] Very, very well, you know.
[00:48:58] But, yeah.
[00:48:58] But, yeah.
[00:48:59] With the third movie that I give it.
[00:49:01] I give it a good four out of five, you know.
[00:49:03] Oh, nice.
[00:49:04] Yeah.
[00:49:05] It was really good to me.
[00:49:06] You know.
[00:49:07] You know.
[00:49:08] So, Mel Gibson.
[00:49:10] Mel.
[00:49:11] What more do you got to say?
[00:49:12] Mel Gibson.
[00:49:13] I mean.
[00:49:14] Was it Snabs and Banderas?
[00:49:16] Just doing wild.
[00:49:17] Forget about.
[00:49:19] Forget about the controversy with the drunk driving thing.
[00:49:22] Forget about that.
[00:49:24] You got Mel Gibson.
[00:49:25] You know.
[00:49:26] Mad Max.
[00:49:26] Martin Riggs.
[00:49:29] I mean.
[00:49:29] Jesus Christ.
[00:49:31] For him to play an unhinged villain.
[00:49:34] Absolutely.
[00:49:36] Sign me up and get me out there, you know.
[00:49:39] Yeah.
[00:49:40] He does really good turning Continental.
[00:49:42] The Continental.
[00:49:43] I can't wait to watch that.
[00:49:44] Yeah.
[00:49:45] The John Wick origin spinoff.
[00:49:47] Yeah.
[00:49:48] I know they're doing another John Wick.
[00:49:50] See.
[00:49:50] And that's just it.
[00:49:51] Maybe that's what it was.
[00:49:53] The John Wick guys should have come in and rescued this.
[00:49:56] Because some of them worked on it.
[00:49:57] The 187 guys.
[00:49:59] But.
[00:49:59] I don't know.
[00:50:01] Yeah.
[00:50:01] Mel Gibson in the third.
[00:50:03] And then yeah.
[00:50:04] Antonio Banderas.
[00:50:05] No.
[00:50:06] The comic relief.
[00:50:07] You know.
[00:50:08] Yeah.
[00:50:09] I'm not crazy.
[00:50:11] My name is Rapido.
[00:50:12] I let me do it.
[00:50:13] Ex-missive.
[00:50:14] Ex-missive.
[00:50:15] Ex-missive.
[00:50:16] Yeah.
[00:50:17] Yeah.
[00:50:17] He's young in mind.
[00:50:19] You know.
[00:50:20] I mean.
[00:50:21] For God's sakes.
[00:50:22] You gotta like a movie where Randy Couture and Dolph Lundgren get in a tank.
[00:50:28] Yeah.
[00:50:28] Randy Couture.
[00:50:29] Yeah.
[00:50:30] Randy Couture.
[00:50:30] They have more to do.
[00:50:31] But yeah.
[00:50:33] Yeah.
[00:50:35] What was it?
[00:50:37] Wasn't Randy Couture in that movie?
[00:50:38] Ah.
[00:50:39] But yeah.
[00:50:40] I'll tell you though.
[00:50:41] Yeah.
[00:50:41] Yeah.
[00:50:41] You know.
[00:50:42] Yeah.
[00:50:43] You know.
[00:50:43] With the addition of the new faces.
[00:50:46] You know.
[00:50:47] Vicious Victor Ortiz.
[00:50:49] You know.
[00:50:49] Glenn Powell.
[00:50:50] Before we knew him as Glenn Powell.
[00:50:51] You're right.
[00:50:52] This was what made me a fan.
[00:50:54] And then he was in other silly stuff.
[00:50:56] He was in a funny Lucy Law.
[00:50:57] Lou.
[00:50:57] Who.
[00:50:58] High Diggs.
[00:50:59] Netflix comedy.
[00:51:00] And then he was in other stupid stuff.
[00:51:02] Like right along too.
[00:51:03] So I'm like.
[00:51:04] Yeah.
[00:51:04] Hey.
[00:51:04] He's got decent charisma.
[00:51:05] He's a B-movie guy.
[00:51:07] You know.
[00:51:07] Yeah.
[00:51:08] And then he had Vonda Rousey.
[00:51:10] Who was on top.
[00:51:11] Of her game.
[00:51:13] She was awesome in this.
[00:51:14] Yeah.
[00:51:15] And.
[00:51:15] Vonda Rousey.
[00:51:16] On top of her game at that point.
[00:51:17] And then.
[00:51:18] Yeah.
[00:51:18] You know.
[00:51:19] And so for you.
[00:51:19] Antonio Banderas.
[00:51:21] Oh.
[00:51:21] You already mentioned him.
[00:51:23] You know.
[00:51:24] Kelsey Grammer.
[00:51:25] You know.
[00:51:25] Oh yeah.
[00:51:26] That was fun.
[00:51:26] As a recruiter.
[00:51:29] See there.
[00:51:30] With the fake background.
[00:51:31] While they're driving.
[00:51:32] That at least had a charm to it.
[00:51:34] Versus.
[00:51:34] The entire movie.
[00:51:36] Is just a very bad thing.
[00:51:37] You know.
[00:51:38] Yeah.
[00:51:39] You know.
[00:51:39] Yeah.
[00:51:39] Yeah.
[00:51:40] You know.
[00:51:40] Expendables.
[00:51:41] Expendables 3.
[00:51:42] You know.
[00:51:42] Yeah.
[00:51:43] A good 4 out of 5.
[00:51:44] You know.
[00:51:44] Mel Gibson and Stallone.
[00:51:46] Have a really good.
[00:51:49] Hard hitting fight scene.
[00:51:50] It was short.
[00:51:51] But it was hard hitting.
[00:51:53] Okay.
[00:51:54] Right.
[00:51:55] I mean.
[00:51:56] Yeah.
[00:51:56] They.
[00:51:57] They.
[00:51:58] They.
[00:52:00] They.
[00:52:00] Just.
[00:52:00] Tore it up.
[00:52:01] You know.
[00:52:02] Martin Riggs.
[00:52:03] And John Rambo fighting.
[00:52:05] Come on man.
[00:52:05] Yeah.
[00:52:08] You know.
[00:52:09] Now the rating I give.
[00:52:11] Expendables 4.
[00:52:14] I never.
[00:52:15] I never saw that movie.
[00:52:16] So.
[00:52:17] What's the point?
[00:52:18] Oh.
[00:52:21] I mean.
[00:52:23] Seriously.
[00:52:24] As soon as I heard that 50 Cent was going to be in that movie.
[00:52:27] I said no.
[00:52:28] I did not want to see it.
[00:52:30] At all.
[00:52:31] At all.
[00:52:32] Oh.
[00:52:33] 50 broken movie.
[00:52:34] 50 Cent fan.
[00:52:34] I'm sorry.
[00:52:35] You know.
[00:52:36] You know.
[00:52:38] Yeah.
[00:52:38] As soon as I heard.
[00:52:39] As soon as I heard that he was in that movie.
[00:52:41] I did not want to see.
[00:52:43] I did not want to be.
[00:52:45] My eyes not want to be.
[00:52:46] A part of anything.
[00:52:49] You know.
[00:52:51] You know.
[00:52:52] Blammo.
[00:52:52] Consider yourself lucky.
[00:52:53] I've seen it twice.
[00:52:55] Oh.
[00:52:56] As one time.
[00:52:57] Once I said.
[00:52:58] The second time I saw it was.
[00:52:59] So I would be prepared for this show.
[00:53:02] I told you man.
[00:53:03] But you knew what you were getting into when you saw it.
[00:53:06] I knew exactly.
[00:53:07] You know.
[00:53:07] It's weird.
[00:53:08] I don't remember it being as bad as it was.
[00:53:09] I think I had on Letterboxd.
[00:53:11] Before I watched it the second time.
[00:53:12] It was two stars.
[00:53:13] And then I'm watching it this time.
[00:53:15] And I'm like.
[00:53:16] How does this even deserve anything?
[00:53:19] So it was.
[00:53:20] I think I enjoyed it less the second time.
[00:53:23] The first time I saw it in the theater though.
[00:53:25] So.
[00:53:26] Oh.
[00:53:26] He must have been on an acid trip or something.
[00:53:30] But.
[00:53:30] I hear you.
[00:53:31] Some movies.
[00:53:32] I don't know.
[00:53:32] It really is depending on your mood.
[00:53:33] But that one is just like.
[00:53:35] This is like.
[00:53:36] It's like.
[00:53:36] It's.
[00:53:37] It's a sleeping pill.
[00:53:38] That's like forcing you to go to bed.
[00:53:41] But it's so bad.
[00:53:42] You can't look away.
[00:53:43] So you're just like.
[00:53:45] And then you get even more mad.
[00:53:46] Because again.
[00:53:47] It's a big time investment.
[00:53:49] That you will not get back.
[00:53:50] So it's like.
[00:53:52] Well.
[00:53:53] Gil.
[00:53:54] I'll let you rank the first free.
[00:53:56] Yeah.
[00:53:56] Just my ranking point.
[00:53:57] That's your ranking.
[00:53:58] That's epic.
[00:53:59] Right.
[00:54:01] Yeah.
[00:54:01] Mine.
[00:54:02] Goes up progressively.
[00:54:03] From the first one.
[00:54:04] I had some problems.
[00:54:06] With the first one.
[00:54:07] One was mentioning.
[00:54:08] Of course.
[00:54:09] And you said that.
[00:54:10] Everybody knew.
[00:54:11] I didn't know that.
[00:54:12] Bruce Willis.
[00:54:13] And Schwarzenegger.
[00:54:14] Were going to walk in.
[00:54:15] And walk off.
[00:54:16] Yeah.
[00:54:17] It was all over the place.
[00:54:18] When they talked about.
[00:54:19] The fact they were going to be in the movie.
[00:54:20] It was all over the place.
[00:54:22] Matter of fact.
[00:54:23] When they filmed the scene.
[00:54:24] It was a news story.
[00:54:25] Because they only filmed for one day.
[00:54:28] And then.
[00:54:29] And then.
[00:54:30] I didn't understand.
[00:54:31] You know.
[00:54:31] Dolph Lundgren's character.
[00:54:33] He turns bad.
[00:54:35] And then.
[00:54:36] Because he's on drugs.
[00:54:37] Huh?
[00:54:38] And then he's bad.
[00:54:38] And then he turns back.
[00:54:39] And everybody's okay with it.
[00:54:41] Yeah.
[00:54:42] And I didn't quite understand that.
[00:54:44] So I gave it a two.
[00:54:46] Oh.
[00:54:48] Wow.
[00:54:49] Ouch.
[00:54:51] What are you doing on this episode?
[00:54:53] I'm just kidding.
[00:54:54] I gave it a two.
[00:54:55] Two arrows.
[00:54:56] And then.
[00:54:57] The Expendables 2.
[00:54:59] It seemed to me like there was a.
[00:55:01] A better progression within the film.
[00:55:04] Like.
[00:55:05] It was well.
[00:55:06] Better well constructed.
[00:55:09] Yeah.
[00:55:10] And I enjoyed Mel Gibson as a villain.
[00:55:12] Oh.
[00:55:13] That's.
[00:55:13] That's free.
[00:55:14] Oh.
[00:55:14] I'm sorry.
[00:55:15] Right.
[00:55:15] Okay.
[00:55:16] Yeah.
[00:55:17] Jean-Claude Van Damme.
[00:55:18] Except.
[00:55:18] He didn't do the splits.
[00:55:19] But you know.
[00:55:22] Yeah.
[00:55:23] But I.
[00:55:23] I like the progression of the second one.
[00:55:26] As opposed to the first.
[00:55:27] And then the friendship that was budding between.
[00:55:31] Stallone and.
[00:55:32] And.
[00:55:32] And I like the progression on that.
[00:55:33] So I give that a three out of.
[00:55:35] Out of five.
[00:55:36] Arrows.
[00:55:38] No.
[00:55:40] And Expendables 3.
[00:55:41] I think I like that better.
[00:55:44] You know.
[00:55:44] Of all three of them.
[00:55:45] I think I like that one the most.
[00:55:47] And I would give that one a four.
[00:55:50] Four.
[00:55:50] So.
[00:55:50] So.
[00:55:51] Your list is going.
[00:55:52] Getting better and better.
[00:55:53] Maybe you should see four.
[00:55:57] Maybe I'm glad that I haven't seen four.
[00:56:00] Because.
[00:56:00] You know.
[00:56:00] Maybe.
[00:56:01] Then I have to go.
[00:56:02] Two.
[00:56:02] Three.
[00:56:03] Four.
[00:56:03] Zero.
[00:56:04] Or something like that.
[00:56:05] I don't know.
[00:56:06] I'm gonna have to give it a zero anyway.
[00:56:07] Because I haven't seen it.
[00:56:08] But.
[00:56:08] Oh.
[00:56:09] Yeah.
[00:56:10] Not applicable.
[00:56:11] Yeah.
[00:56:13] Oh man.
[00:56:16] Oh yeah.
[00:56:17] So.
[00:56:18] I'm with you guys.
[00:56:19] I see a lot of your points.
[00:56:20] I'm gonna share a lot of these same ratings.
[00:56:22] So.
[00:56:22] I mean.
[00:56:23] In terms of the amount of fun I have with all that.
[00:56:26] That's not how I'm rating them.
[00:56:27] I'm just saying with the amount of fun I have.
[00:56:29] They're five stars.
[00:56:31] They're actual ratings.
[00:56:33] They're actual ratings.
[00:56:34] I'm gonna give the first one four out of five.
[00:56:37] Yes.
[00:56:37] It.
[00:56:38] It starts off explosive.
[00:56:40] Like a.
[00:56:40] More modern action movie.
[00:56:43] I like how they light the darkly lit scenes.
[00:56:46] It makes it suspenseful.
[00:56:47] And.
[00:56:48] I like how they're in basically.
[00:56:51] Southern state.
[00:56:52] And they're living underground.
[00:56:54] Waiting for their next.
[00:56:55] For the phone to ring.
[00:56:57] For their next mission.
[00:56:58] And you make them likable.
[00:56:58] Even though they're in a not so likable world.
[00:57:01] It.
[00:57:01] It works well for.
[00:57:03] Any kind of person.
[00:57:04] You know.
[00:57:04] Like.
[00:57:04] Whether you're watching a Bronson movie.
[00:57:06] Or.
[00:57:07] A show like Prison Break.
[00:57:08] Or even a.
[00:57:09] Game like Grand Theft Auto.
[00:57:10] Just having these anti-heroes.
[00:57:11] Be very amusing.
[00:57:13] And.
[00:57:13] Have good chemistry.
[00:57:15] It does have kind of a.
[00:57:17] Some.
[00:57:17] Too many predictable tropes.
[00:57:19] And.
[00:57:19] A few.
[00:57:20] A bit of a slug.
[00:57:22] But.
[00:57:23] It rewards more and more.
[00:57:24] On repeat viewings.
[00:57:25] Just because.
[00:57:26] It embraces.
[00:57:27] And it really is a proper.
[00:57:28] Love letter to the genre.
[00:57:30] I didn't have any issue.
[00:57:31] With the shaky cam.
[00:57:32] Like other viewers had.
[00:57:33] So.
[00:57:34] Yeah.
[00:57:34] It's going to be a four out of five.
[00:57:35] Exploding arrows for me.
[00:57:36] I really.
[00:57:37] Enjoy it.
[00:57:38] Every time it's on.
[00:57:39] Especially when.
[00:57:39] You're seeing the.
[00:57:41] What is it?
[00:57:41] The AA-13 gunship.
[00:57:43] That they're doing.
[00:57:44] Taking down the.
[00:57:45] The various troops.
[00:57:47] And freeing the villagers.
[00:57:48] Fun stuff.
[00:57:49] Um.
[00:57:50] Part two.
[00:57:51] It's going to be a free out of five for me.
[00:57:53] I do have fun with a lot of the cast.
[00:57:55] It's just.
[00:57:56] On repeat viewings.
[00:57:57] I've gotten.
[00:57:58] There's some confident action.
[00:58:00] But there are some.
[00:58:02] Uh.
[00:58:03] Sloppy edits.
[00:58:04] Where you can tell.
[00:58:04] It's the same guys.
[00:58:05] Getting mowed down.
[00:58:06] Again and again.
[00:58:06] But getting back up.
[00:58:07] And they're editing it out of order.
[00:58:10] I.
[00:58:10] Van Damme owns this movie.
[00:58:12] And the last 20 minutes.
[00:58:12] Are worth the price of admission alone.
[00:58:14] It's just.
[00:58:15] Once again.
[00:58:16] There's a bit of.
[00:58:16] Dead space in between the fun.
[00:58:18] And I don't like how.
[00:58:19] Statham dispatches Atkins.
[00:58:21] But other than that.
[00:58:21] It really is a lot of fun.
[00:58:23] And it embraces the low brow.
[00:58:24] It's having way more fun.
[00:58:26] Heart free.
[00:58:27] It's a free and half.
[00:58:28] Out of five for me.
[00:58:29] I like this way more than most do.
[00:58:31] Just because.
[00:58:32] Rating aside.
[00:58:34] It's just.
[00:58:35] It really was like.
[00:58:36] Watching.
[00:58:38] A bunch of Legos.
[00:58:39] And Mega Bloks.
[00:58:40] And.
[00:58:41] Video game characters.
[00:58:42] All played by your favorite action stars.
[00:58:44] And then kicking each other's ass.
[00:58:45] And yet.
[00:58:47] It was like.
[00:58:48] I don't know.
[00:58:49] It was just like.
[00:58:50] What.
[00:58:51] They somehow made it.
[00:58:52] Once you get past how it's trying to cater to the Fast and Furious crowd.
[00:58:56] It's still.
[00:58:57] A lot of fun.
[00:58:58] Than just seeing them play on.
[00:59:00] The action genre tropes.
[00:59:02] And.
[00:59:03] Statham gets more cool fights.
[00:59:04] And Snipes.
[00:59:05] Banderas.
[00:59:06] Gibson.
[00:59:07] All.
[00:59:08] Are just having so much fun.
[00:59:09] Fleshing out these very wacky roles.
[00:59:12] And yeah.
[00:59:13] Part four.
[00:59:14] I'm being way too generous.
[00:59:15] I'm going to give that two out of five.
[00:59:17] It wasn't unwatchable.
[00:59:18] But that is all I can say.
[00:59:20] It's still a bad movie.
[00:59:22] How can you say that much?
[00:59:23] That's all I can say.
[00:59:24] I try to be fair.
[00:59:26] It didn't make me turn it off.
[00:59:28] But it did make me want to fast forward for certain scenes.
[00:59:30] So that is it.
[00:59:31] It's.
[00:59:31] It's mediocre.
[00:59:32] It's.
[00:59:34] I don't think I would have liked it had I been 13.
[00:59:36] And was still developing.
[00:59:38] Fun.
[00:59:39] Because it.
[00:59:39] It doesn't do anything with anything.
[00:59:41] It's just like.
[00:59:42] Okay.
[00:59:44] If you have all these new guys.
[00:59:46] You got to have them kicking ass.
[00:59:48] Instead they introduced the villain.
[00:59:50] But I don't even know who he's fighting.
[00:59:51] And so.
[00:59:53] It had a competent crew.
[00:59:54] Doing incompetent things.
[00:59:56] So.
[00:59:57] It.
[00:59:58] If.
[00:59:58] You know.
[00:59:59] If I were them.
[01:00:00] I would have scrubbed this from my resume.
[01:00:01] It just.
[01:00:03] Clearly nobody was interested in.
[01:00:05] Getting.
[01:00:06] It done.
[01:00:07] They got it done on time.
[01:00:08] But no one was interested in.
[01:00:10] Finding any interesting take in the editing room.
[01:00:13] Which was just like blasphemy.
[01:00:14] I'm like.
[01:00:15] Come on.
[01:00:16] Man.
[01:00:17] There are franchises that.
[01:00:19] No one wants a sequel to.
[01:00:21] Like.
[01:00:21] It's already a perfect.
[01:00:22] Like.
[01:00:23] Two hitter.
[01:00:24] Or trilogy.
[01:00:26] Like.
[01:00:26] If someone announced.
[01:00:27] They were remaking.
[01:00:28] Or doing a fourth.
[01:00:29] Back to the future.
[01:00:29] I'd be like.
[01:00:30] Why?
[01:00:32] How can you recapture that.
[01:00:34] Magic in a bottle.
[01:00:35] Especially since.
[01:00:37] Nobody treats these franchises well.
[01:00:39] They just kind of throw stuff out.
[01:00:41] You know.
[01:00:41] This year has been a good year for franchises.
[01:00:43] Because we got the first omen.
[01:00:45] And we got Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
[01:00:46] Which were both.
[01:00:47] You know.
[01:00:48] First rate movies.
[01:00:48] But how many times do I have to.
[01:00:50] Like.
[01:00:50] The Fall Guy.
[01:00:51] It's part of a.
[01:00:52] I guess it's.
[01:00:52] It's not really a franchise.
[01:00:54] It's a TV show.
[01:00:54] But what did the movie have to do with the television show?
[01:00:58] Nothing.
[01:00:59] Then he was a stuntman.
[01:01:00] Yeah.
[01:01:00] Yeah.
[01:01:00] Yeah.
[01:01:01] But that's it.
[01:01:01] I mean.
[01:01:01] They took out one of the main characters.
[01:01:03] There was never a love relationship between those other two characters.
[01:01:07] It's like.
[01:01:07] What am I watching?
[01:01:08] I told my mom.
[01:01:09] I said.
[01:01:10] She'd probably like.
[01:01:11] The Fall Guy.
[01:01:11] Because it's sort of like a Hallmark movie with action.
[01:01:14] Oh.
[01:01:15] Oh.
[01:01:16] Mercy.
[01:01:16] But there wasn't even a lot of action in it.
[01:01:18] Me and my wife went to see it.
[01:01:19] And we're like looking at each other.
[01:01:20] And it's like.
[01:01:20] When's the action going to happen?
[01:01:23] Ah.
[01:01:23] Damn.
[01:01:24] So.
[01:01:24] All the fighting and stuff like that.
[01:01:26] I guess.
[01:01:26] You know.
[01:01:26] And.
[01:01:27] But yeah.
[01:01:28] I told my mom.
[01:01:29] I says.
[01:01:29] I didn't like it.
[01:01:30] It was too much like a Hallmark movie to me.
[01:01:32] Yeah.
[01:01:33] I.
[01:01:33] I didn't laugh at the trailer at all.
[01:01:35] And everyone else was looking forward to it.
[01:01:36] Which was already kind of my.
[01:01:38] Of course.
[01:01:38] And I think they've given up on the Marvel franchises.
[01:01:40] Because I don't know what this stuff is.
[01:01:42] That they're putting on.
[01:01:42] Well.
[01:01:42] Deadpool might reignite that.
[01:01:44] I hope.
[01:01:45] In a good way.
[01:01:46] I hope.
[01:01:47] But have you seen it?
[01:01:48] Well.
[01:01:49] Because that's the other thing too.
[01:01:50] Like there's.
[01:01:51] They keep going with these storylines.
[01:01:53] That.
[01:01:54] It's kind of like a.
[01:01:55] If you were to.
[01:01:55] To me.
[01:01:56] It comes off as if you were going to do.
[01:01:58] A bunch of Star Trek movies.
[01:01:59] All set in the mirror universe.
[01:02:00] That's too much for the average.
[01:02:03] Fans and non-fans.
[01:02:04] To have to comprehend.
[01:02:05] Just.
[01:02:06] Keep the time travel.
[01:02:08] Minuscule.
[01:02:08] Or simple.
[01:02:09] Don't.
[01:02:10] I kind of understand that point.
[01:02:12] A lot of people really don't like.
[01:02:13] The alternate universe stuff.
[01:02:15] In movies.
[01:02:15] Because.
[01:02:16] They have a hard time trying to follow.
[01:02:17] What's going on.
[01:02:18] Because you see.
[01:02:18] You see this version of someone over here.
[01:02:20] Then you see the same version.
[01:02:22] Or the same person.
[01:02:23] And a different version of themselves.
[01:02:24] Over here.
[01:02:25] No.
[01:02:26] That's a good point.
[01:02:26] Because like.
[01:02:27] I couldn't.
[01:02:28] I know.
[01:02:29] That's absolutely true.
[01:02:30] Because like.
[01:02:30] I couldn't get into WandaVision.
[01:02:32] But I really dug Doctor Strange too.
[01:02:33] Because it was Sam Raimi having fun.
[01:02:35] But.
[01:02:35] Yeah.
[01:02:36] The mirror universes are just.
[01:02:37] They're too much.
[01:02:38] It's just like.
[01:02:39] The movie should stand on its own.
[01:02:40] Yet enhance.
[01:02:42] Yeah.
[01:02:43] The franchise it's in.
[01:02:43] And that's why all the.
[01:02:45] Planet of the Apes.
[01:02:45] Because like.
[01:02:45] Look at the.
[01:02:46] Planet of the Apes.
[01:02:47] Yeah.
[01:02:47] It's a good one.
[01:02:48] Star.
[01:02:48] Most of the Star Treks are good at that.
[01:02:50] Like.
[01:02:51] If someone comes in from the other show.
[01:02:53] You don't have to have seen all 50 episodes.
[01:02:55] To know what that is.
[01:02:55] Or if it's the first.
[01:02:56] First movie in that franchise you've seen.
[01:02:59] You shouldn't be lost.
[01:03:00] If you have to over explain something.
[01:03:02] And it can't stand on its own two feet.
[01:03:04] That's.
[01:03:04] That's already a problem.
[01:03:05] And.
[01:03:06] Franchise fatigue will inevitably set in.
[01:03:08] This is why I like doing these franchise chats.
[01:03:11] Because.
[01:03:12] You know.
[01:03:12] Let's say we had had a lot of people.
[01:03:14] Who didn't like most of these movies.
[01:03:16] I wanted as many of those guys on the panel.
[01:03:18] Because I wanted to understand.
[01:03:19] Why this wouldn't appeal to that kind of crowd.
[01:03:21] You know.
[01:03:21] I like closure.
[01:03:23] And that's the other thing too.
[01:03:24] Movies don't seem to want closure.
[01:03:25] They're almost as bad as conspiracy theories.
[01:03:27] Where they just want to kind of vent.
[01:03:29] And you're like.
[01:03:30] I don't know what you just said.
[01:03:32] But none of it may.
[01:03:33] Landed.
[01:03:33] You know.
[01:03:33] It just.
[01:03:35] Makes sense.
[01:03:35] And then they don't give you closure at bombs.
[01:03:37] And they never make another movie.
[01:03:38] And you're like lost.
[01:03:40] Oh yeah.
[01:03:41] Yeah.
[01:03:41] Don't be like lost.
[01:03:43] And.
[01:03:43] Well that's one thing.
[01:03:44] Yeah.
[01:03:44] That's the one thing with Marvel.
[01:03:45] That they were making mistakes with.
[01:03:46] They were introducing elements.
[01:03:48] That they're not following up on.
[01:03:48] They do too many per year.
[01:03:49] Just do one.
[01:03:50] Just do one.
[01:03:51] One a year.
[01:03:52] That's all you need.
[01:03:53] Like I don't watch Star Wars anymore.
[01:03:55] And it's not that I don't like them.
[01:03:57] It's just.
[01:03:57] I'm tired of them.
[01:03:59] And I'm told that I should be watching Andor.
[01:04:03] And I've seen.
[01:04:04] I've seen the final episode.
[01:04:05] Because I went to an event that they played it at.
[01:04:07] And it looked good.
[01:04:09] But every time I go to turn on something Star Wars.
[01:04:11] I can watch something different.
[01:04:12] I have seen probably since I want to say Circa 07.
[01:04:16] Just an increase in reviews.
[01:04:18] Which just don't talk about why this appeals.
[01:04:22] Other than having a boner for the actor and director.
[01:04:26] It's like okay I'm glad you like these guys.
[01:04:30] Why.
[01:04:30] How would I sell this to someone.
[01:04:33] You know like I want.
[01:04:34] I need a pitch.
[01:04:35] Like hey if you like Tarantino.
[01:04:37] If you like Leon the Professional.
[01:04:38] If you like this kind of movie.
[01:04:41] You'll like that.
[01:04:42] You know I need some frame of reference.
[01:04:44] And it seems like so many of them don't.
[01:04:46] Like Expendables.
[01:04:48] I don't think the studio understood why it worked.
[01:04:51] Well I think Lionsgate did.
[01:04:53] But the other investors and producers didn't give a shit.
[01:04:57] I think that was just a Stallone wanted to do it.
[01:04:59] It was probably a little bit lower budget.
[01:05:01] Than they used to give it out for a Stallone movie.
[01:05:03] Let's go ahead and give it a shot.
[01:05:04] And then it was a hit.
[01:05:05] Let's make a Commando type movie.
[01:05:06] Yeah.
[01:05:06] But it seems like.
[01:05:09] That the people going into it.
[01:05:10] Already know what they're in for.
[01:05:12] And the people who don't like it.
[01:05:13] Already either don't like the actors.
[01:05:15] Or those kinds of junky.
[01:05:17] Fun.
[01:05:18] 80's cheese.
[01:05:19] So it's just like.
[01:05:20] Okay.
[01:05:21] But.
[01:05:21] You knew.
[01:05:22] We knew what we were in for.
[01:05:23] For the most part.
[01:05:24] You're able.
[01:05:24] I can mark this.
[01:05:25] And describe this to someone.
[01:05:27] Who wants to go see.
[01:05:28] Fun spy.
[01:05:30] Men on a mission.
[01:05:30] Kind of movie.
[01:05:31] So it's just like.
[01:05:32] Yeah.
[01:05:33] When we're describing some of these other movies.
[01:05:35] It just seems like.
[01:05:37] I don't know.
[01:05:37] I think.
[01:05:38] A lot of people just think.
[01:05:39] Oh you like so and so.
[01:05:41] You're going to see everything they're in.
[01:05:42] I'm like.
[01:05:42] Not necessarily.
[01:05:44] You know.
[01:05:45] There are actors we love.
[01:05:46] But we don't necessarily like the role they're famous for.
[01:05:48] You know.
[01:05:49] You might like them.
[01:05:50] At the third stage of their career.
[01:05:52] When they're in comeback mode.
[01:05:53] Or evolving a bit as a performer.
[01:05:55] You might like them.
[01:05:57] On TV.
[01:05:58] Versus as a movie star.
[01:05:59] You might like them in supporting.
[01:06:00] Versus leading the movie.
[01:06:02] There's a bunch of those actors.
[01:06:03] That seemed like.
[01:06:04] After 09.
[01:06:05] Who.
[01:06:06] Were having to find out the hard way.
[01:06:07] Hey.
[01:06:07] I was good in this acclaimed movie.
[01:06:09] But not good in these other movies.
[01:06:11] You know.
[01:06:11] And.
[01:06:12] You know.
[01:06:13] Sometimes the magic happens.
[01:06:14] Like.
[01:06:14] Like you say.
[01:06:15] Sharing.
[01:06:16] Scaring.
[01:06:17] Ugh.
[01:06:18] And.
[01:06:19] Stallone kind of did that.
[01:06:20] And then he got a big head again.
[01:06:22] I'm like.
[01:06:23] What?
[01:06:24] You're treating this again.
[01:06:25] Just like James Bond.
[01:06:26] Where the.
[01:06:27] Or Indiana Jones.
[01:06:28] Where the.
[01:06:29] People in the movie.
[01:06:30] Don't even follow in.
[01:06:31] To the next movie.
[01:06:32] You know.
[01:06:32] Unless they're part of the main cast.
[01:06:34] Come on.
[01:06:34] Why not have some consistency.
[01:06:36] Or.
[01:06:37] I don't know.
[01:06:37] Enough of the cons.
[01:06:38] I think we've summed up the pros.
[01:06:39] And.
[01:06:40] Can we find you on the interweb.
[01:06:43] Or pick a flick.
[01:06:45] Uh.
[01:06:46] Wherever you listen to podcasts.
[01:06:47] I've recently started.
[01:06:48] To put my podcast.
[01:06:50] On my YouTube.
[01:06:50] Because I forgot that.
[01:06:51] You can put your podcast episodes up there.
[01:06:53] So.
[01:06:53] On my YouTube there.
[01:06:54] For those that don't.
[01:06:54] Exactly listen to.
[01:06:55] The audio only platforms.
[01:06:57] Uh.
[01:06:57] You can just search up.
[01:06:58] Pick a flick podcast.
[01:06:59] So.
[01:07:00] And I'll be right there.
[01:07:01] I'm putting up a review later this week.
[01:07:03] So.
[01:07:03] Stay tuned.
[01:07:04] If you're.
[01:07:04] Wanted to check it out.
[01:07:06] Lovely.
[01:07:07] Uh.
[01:07:07] John.
[01:07:08] You're always posting on YouTube and Insta.
[01:07:10] What do you got coming up?
[01:07:11] Yeah.
[01:07:11] The review on The Last Dragon.
[01:07:13] So yeah.
[01:07:13] You know.
[01:07:14] I thought there was a screening of that cult film.
[01:07:16] Yeah.
[01:07:17] Yeah.
[01:07:18] You keep your eyes open on that one.
[01:07:20] Because I have no idea what I'm going to say about that.
[01:07:22] About that movie.
[01:07:25] Yeah.
[01:07:26] But yeah.
[01:07:26] You know.
[01:07:27] Yeah.
[01:07:27] The Johnny Sweet 13.
[01:07:30] YouTube channel.
[01:07:31] You know.
[01:07:32] I do reviews on.
[01:07:36] On.
[01:07:36] Pretty much everything.
[01:07:38] You know.
[01:07:38] You want a comic book movie?
[01:07:40] I got something for you.
[01:07:41] Action movie.
[01:07:42] I got something for you.
[01:07:43] A horror movie.
[01:07:44] Especially during October.
[01:07:46] I got something for you.
[01:07:47] You know.
[01:07:47] Mark.
[01:07:48] Are you.
[01:07:48] Yeah.
[01:07:49] You said you're kind of taking a break from underexposed cinematic treasures.
[01:07:52] And kind of.
[01:07:52] Kind of work on it.
[01:07:53] I'm not taking a break from underexposed cinematic treasures.
[01:07:56] I used to do a podcast called Talking Apes TV.
[01:08:00] Yes.
[01:08:00] Which I moved on from.
[01:08:02] Although it is still.
[01:08:03] It is still.
[01:08:04] It is still up.
[01:08:04] My co-host found a replacement for me.
[01:08:07] And I recommend that.
[01:08:08] Because I'm.
[01:08:08] You know.
[01:08:09] Still in really good terms with them.
[01:08:10] And they do a really good job.
[01:08:11] But my website that I do now.
[01:08:13] Is called Underexposed Cinematic Treasures.
[01:08:17] At underexposedcinematictreasures.com
[01:08:19] You can look it up.
[01:08:20] I still see your post once in a while.
[01:08:21] I just didn't know.
[01:08:23] I still see your post once in a while.
[01:08:25] But I just didn't.
[01:08:26] Know what the frequency was.
[01:08:28] You can look it up on.
[01:08:30] Facebook.
[01:08:31] I believe on Twitter.
[01:08:32] And.
[01:08:33] And Instagram.
[01:08:34] It's under.
[01:08:36] Underexposed.
[01:08:37] UCT.
[01:08:38] Underscore recommends.
[01:08:40] Because Underexposed Cinematic Treasures.
[01:08:41] Was too long for them to make it a handle.
[01:08:44] And I basically recommend unseen.
[01:08:47] Undersen movies.
[01:08:47] Or forgotten films that.
[01:08:49] You know.
[01:08:50] Next time you're flipping through Netflix.
[01:08:51] Why do you got to say.
[01:08:52] You know.
[01:08:52] Stop on that movie you've already seen.
[01:08:55] Or that next Star Wars thing.
[01:08:56] There's so much out there.
[01:08:58] And so.
[01:08:59] I concentrate on.
[01:09:00] You know.
[01:09:01] Not always smaller movies.
[01:09:03] A couple of.
[01:09:04] A couple of weeks ago.
[01:09:06] I did a movie called Love and Monsters.
[01:09:08] Which is a big monster movie.
[01:09:09] That's right.
[01:09:10] Nobody knows this movie exists.
[01:09:12] It went straight to the internet.
[01:09:13] And you're like.
[01:09:13] Why?
[01:09:14] Yeah.
[01:09:14] And I get celebrity recommendations too.
[01:09:17] When I meet celebrities.
[01:09:19] Sometimes go to signings.
[01:09:20] But I have a friend.
[01:09:21] Who's a member of the Television Academy.
[01:09:22] Who goes to a lot of Emmy events.
[01:09:24] And sometimes he'll invite me.
[01:09:25] And I'll meet celebrities.
[01:09:26] Or he'll talk to celebrities.
[01:09:27] And we get recommendations from people like.
[01:09:30] You know.
[01:09:30] Guillermo del Toro.
[01:09:32] And Judd Apatow gave us a recommendation.
[01:09:35] Andy Serkis gave us a recommendation.
[01:09:37] So I have a whole page devoted to that.
[01:09:39] Nice.
[01:09:39] Underexposed Cinematic Treasures.com.
[01:09:42] Blammo.
[01:09:42] Sorry.
[01:09:43] You're supposed to push your stuff out there.
[01:09:45] Oh, it's fun.
[01:09:46] What else do you want when you're talking about a fun franchise?
[01:09:49] Have fun talking about it.
