[00:00:25] X-Files after strange luck. It's all part of Fox's Wild Wild February, Friday.
[00:01:18] I have some special stats for you guys. I was just like, you know what? There's so many Die Hard or shall we say Dog Day Afternoon type hostage takeover episodes of X-Files. When I look back at it, it's like, whoa, I had no idea. But it's like I thought I was just going to get like maybe five, maybe six. It's like, no, I got over ten when I went back through it. It's like there's so many episodes that are definitely aliens or the thing or
[00:01:48] even predator inspired. And I'm like, yeah, that's pretty cool that because every crime show does that where there's that goes back to what Quentin Tarantino did with the hateful eight, where he's like, I'm making fun of how once a season. And you can find this article on TV tropes dot com where they joke is like once a season on every show, there's going to be a moment where someone gets taken hostage. And the X-Files is like has so many episodes where you're like, that's a seven episode.
[00:02:18] That's a speed episode. That's a. Some dog day after. So but I'll name them off for you. So you're right. And homicide has its share of stuff like that, too. But I started with Ghost in the Machine. Like Scully is in the vent like John McClane going against that Terminator Skynet computer. Oh, yeah, it was like that's a total Terminator diehard movie.
[00:02:45] Ice. That's an episode called Ghost in the Machine. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So remember, as like Mulder has a former partner of his who gets killed and they go to this tech company and the machine is kind of like how from 2001 where it's talking to them. Oh, it sounds familiar now. Yeah. And ice. That's basically an episode of that's basically. Yeah, it's the thing. That's a good episode.
[00:03:11] So it's like and it's just so taught and even Jason Beggy, Xander Berkeley. Right. But Smith, biggies in one of the other ones. But yeah. But yeah, that was under and Felicity Hoffman. And yeah, it was pretty good. But fallen angels. Right. Let's see. I think so. He's giving you the X-Files hiccups. Jeff Colbert. Yeah.
[00:03:41] Jeff Colbert. Yes. He was a dynamite in that episode. Out of bounds. Yep. Good movie. Just, yeah. But but yeah, fallen angel. That's a total just that there's an invisible predator like creature stalking them the whole. Yes, yes, yes. That's a good one. That's the that's where we first meet. Uh, uh, Matt Spinning, the conspiracy guy. Yeah. We're meeting season four.
[00:04:10] But I was so surprised because as I was just told so on, Ethan, I was like, I thought every show has like a diehard moment, but I didn't expect there to be 40 episodes. I could say that's kind of diehard ish, you know, is like in. Yeah. Yeah. Lazarus, the final one of the final season one episodes that has a big. Uh, that that's where, uh, this bank robber, his consciousness is transferred to another person's body. Yeah, it sounds familiar.
[00:04:40] Yeah, it's what but take that supernatural element. It's one heated cops and robbers type exchange and. Uh, blood from season two, episode three. Uh, that has. Uh, basically. Uh, that that's the one where the violent killings are orchestrated by just the TV and the electronic devices, but the whole thing does kind of play like another race against time kind of thing.
[00:05:11] And the two part episode of Dwayne Berry and Ascension, that's basically one giant hostage movie, you know? Especially when Mulder goes into negotiator mode. But how about irresistible from season two, episode 13 is like, uh, again, is like it's mainly a Cape Fear seven type movie, but again, Scully gets taken hostage and has to talk her way out of that 731 from season three, episode 10.
[00:05:39] Uh, just because the whole end of that, I mean, we have Mulder on a train with a device that's going to explode, but. And, uh, pusher as plenty of SWAT team action in that, uh, quagmire, the giant alligator episode that is actually the Loch Ness. It's like, yeah, that whole thing plays like a Jaws type movie. Yeah. Probably the best example of a show doing traditional monsters, right?
[00:06:07] Which is a show that never did any way. Anyway, you're as good as like episodes like Jersey devil or any other episodes or nothing. Yes. There's some awesome. Mm hmm. Totally. And. Uh, oh, goodness. I could talk about, uh, the Talithi Kumi episode that had some takeovers at the end.
[00:06:31] Uh, it was like, they're having to, uh, deal with a shooting at a fast food restaurant and. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Then we get to the, I mean, the, the field where I died, that whole thing is basically a Waco type, you know, hostage takeover, but. Right. Uh, surprisingly, I found a lot of millennium episodes as well, though. Like season one, episode five kingdom Kong from episode six.
[00:06:59] And the wild and the innocent sacrament also from. And. As well as in card. Do you have these written down? Yes, I do. Oh, I was gonna say, if you're ever, I'm like, holy. Yeah. I wish I did. I wish I was a psychic, like Frank black, but. Yeah. But yeah, I went to. Yeah. Yeah. Arcadia ego. And the time is now. And. Uh, cl. Closure. It's like. Darwin's eye via dollar. Dollar Rosa. Goodbye to all that.
[00:07:29] It's like all of those had hostage takeovers. Wild goose chase. Uh, you know, car chases. And I mean, for God's sakes, the season free finale had. A serial killer who. You know, use diehard as his killing inspiration. So it's like, yeah, they had so many takeovers where it's like. I thought it was worse than Ted Bundy, though, but I don't know. Yeah, he was Ted Bundy. He was Ted Bundy. Yes.
[00:07:56] But then he like confessed, like you see him watching the movie diehard in his den and he's getting ideas. Oh, yeah. But how about paper hearts from season four of X files? Well, with Tom Noonan. Sure. Yeah. So there's a Manhunter reference. Remember what an actor. Yeah. Like and near the end is like Mulder is chasing him and there's a big bus takeover and he's holding the girl hostage. You're like, yeah, that's a cool dog day afternoon style takeover.
[00:08:25] Yeah, it feels like it feels more like a 24 episode actually. Which is so wild as it was before 24. Yeah, I think Howard Gordon was no paper. I mean, he definitely brought a lot of X files to his thing. Oh, we got to talk about detour where they're in the Florida forest. It was like that's a Jaws type trapped creature features thing and the moth people.
[00:08:51] But the Pine Bluff variant from season five, that's one cool deal where you might remember this season where Mulder is undercover the whole time. It starts off. We're like, did he go to the dark side? Did he lose it? Finally is like, no, he's sorry. Sounds familiar. Yeah, it's like he's just infiltrated a militia group is like he has to have his hand broken, you know, and you know, twisted.
[00:09:18] And then is like and at first it's really scary when you watch this with today's eyes with all those in cell militia gunmen who were on the loose is like, yeah, these guys do a bank robbery and they're all dressed up in random, you know, like Halloween, you know, mass like werewolves and everything to disguise themselves. But fully a dukes. That's the one where the paranoid telemarketer thinks everyone's a bug and starts calling them off one by one. Brian Marks. Paul McCrane won.
[00:09:49] I think I had that somewhere, but yeah, that was what episode is that you can. He's driving an ambulance, right? And then he. Yeah, he gets decapitated and then comes back. And yeah, that was creepy to me. Yeah, that was probably one of the first ones. Oh, oh, wait. I can let our better bet. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. So I think season four, episode 12. Yeah, I would put that on there.
[00:10:15] And I mean, even the so which is a lot of it. Yeah, so that's a lot of infamous history of Leonard Betts was the episode that was prior to, you know, Super Bowl. Right. The Super Bowl ratings. Yeah, right. It's it is. But actually, it was the postman ever again first because, you know, but.
[00:10:36] But then what happened was, you know, we should have getting a scheduling switcheroo because, you know, never again basically was the episode with intended prior to the episode of the better bets. Right. So what happened was, you know, never again got invited by the cancer. So, actually, more than once that never again was never supposed to, you know, be true. Any of, you know, Scalge's cancer or, etc. But then you did the whole switcher of one of the bets and never again. So people didn't remember again is basically a continuation of the cancer or it's not. Yeah.
[00:11:07] That's not what Morgan Wong envisioned it to be. But the but it became that way. But yeah, Leonard Betts on its own. Great episode. Probably the best Santa monster of the week episode. I think it's the I don't think the effects are good, but it is. It's a it's a half and half episode. Yeah, well, I remember his look, though, was really creepy to me. Oh, look at the creature type. Like, I remember feeling like on. And so but CGI and gratuitousness aside, I will give it that.
[00:11:35] Like you do get to see Scully get a great fight scene at the end. So, I mean, it is worth it for that alone. But yeah, yeah. And then the final scene, that's just such a bomb show. So I take it back, guys. There's 41 episodes. Yeah, we call diehard as but that's a good call. I think. Yeah, you could totally call that a diehard ish kind of episode just because it's almost like they hit it in a way almost that. And I mean, don't get me wrong.
[00:12:01] There's plenty of episodes where you're like, that's a body snatchers type or tells from the crypt type episode. But but yeah, I mean, fully a dukes. No, sorry. I already talked about that one. The X-Files movie, just that beginning and near the end is like you got some total mentoring candidate and speed type stuff when they're escaping from the building and trying to stop the bomb from going off. But even drive.
[00:12:30] That's a total speed type episodes like, you know, Brian Cranston. Yeah. Or better yet, I would call it outbreak. Meets speed is like he is like, yeah, I'm infected and I got to keep going or my head will literally explode. And triangle, you have a big, you know, Bermuda Triangle transports Mulder to this other time loop and it's Nazi takeover of a boat.
[00:12:55] So it's a little Indiana Jones ish, but SR 819, you might remember that. That's a total like that reminded me of the movie Nick of Time because I was like, because it's like the whole episode. So Krychek is involving Mulder in this deal involving the senator played by Raymond J.
[00:13:17] Berry, and he's like, you're going to get me something and and he tells Skinner, you can't let him know that, you know, I'm going to make your heart stop at any minute. And but just that whole just fast pace is like, what can we do to make to keep his heart pumping for the end while we run around town like a bat out of hell? And there is a cool trapped episode in season. I know so I had an issue with this, but once I get past the hackney dialogue, it's fun.
[00:13:46] Agua Mala where they're fighting the sea monster. And I didn't like it growing up, but I had fun rewatching it as like. But yeah, the it's pretty much a Jaws another Jaws episode where they're just trapped in the hotel by the monster. And but the most I are. It is. But the the most diehard one has to be Monday.
[00:14:11] It's like Monday for sure is like that is dog day afternoon meets groundhog's day is like, yeah, they're going to keep repeating the time. Oh, with those bank robbers that keep blowing up the bank. I remember that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I wouldn't be surprised if the opening of the movie Swordfish was inspired by this episode. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like that whole explosion. Yeah. Just kill it. But I mean, silver, Joe Silverman, he had.
[00:14:39] Yeah, I have yet to encounter any famous person who hasn't seen the X-Files like it. If you were if I were to encounter anyone who's never seen that show, I would call them a liar. It's like how I can understand if you're a casual guy who doesn't watch TV. But it was like if you're in the entertainment industry, there's no way you didn't watch it. Right. Oh, yeah. Um, I didn't even watch much television as a kid. And I watched the X-Files.
[00:15:09] It was everywhere. Yeah. Yeah. But there's some other ones. Uh, that, that, that, but I, again, I wasn't expecting there to be 40 episodes of this where I was like, yeah, that's a similar episode. It's like, yeah, that, that totally I could put that down is even just those last 20 minutes where there's a hostage exchange. There's some kind of similarities.
[00:15:38] Um, uh, getting to, um, what's the one episode, uh, getting it in the release order. Uh, but yeah, once millennium ended, they pretty much brought a lot of those same kind of intense hostage episodes. And you can totally see the influence of this on a law and order SVU episode totally just with how school is just so patient. Huh?
[00:16:07] Uh, but, uh, I, I'm sorry, guys, I'm trying to get the page to reload, but yeah, after Monday, uh, we, we had another episode. Uh, uh, in fact, the millennium episode where Frank Blast comes to X files in season seven, episode four, like that, that, that was, I think. That one is a pretty big zombie takeover episode for the most part.
[00:16:34] And, uh, with season eight, episode 12, where we get into Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish years, uh, Medusa definitely felt like an outbreak meets 24 episode is like the whole subway has a infection and there's a creature trapping them inside. But, uh, from season nine, nothing important happened.
[00:16:55] Part two, uh, uh, there was a lot of hostage exchanges and, you know, race against time while someone's yelling over the phone. And in the season 10 episode, uh, the final one, episode six, like that was a total like disaster movie outbreak type episode. So I wouldn't be surprised if we get more hostage takeover type stuff when this new anthology show comes out. But I was like, yeah, I'm just going to list those off.
[00:17:24] Cause right. I'm just surprised though. Cause it's like, it is so funny when people talk about doing a takeover episode, they, they hate it when you compare it to other movies. It's like, I'm just saying is like these filmmakers who are making this have to have seen something like the towering inferno or, you know, even a command type movie.
[00:17:51] And regardless of the tone, they're doing something that is like that. Everyone's in the industry is definitely seeing dog day afternoon. Cause they got, cause they got a kidnapper with an unusual request while all the FBI people are getting together and their sniper. Okay. Thanks. Thanks for having me right now. It was fun.
