TALES FROM THE CRYPT HBO Series Retrospect (with JJ, Tom, Gil Palmer & Jon Mark)

James, Tom, Gil & Jon all help Cam revisit the macabre yet criminally forgotten HBO hit anthology show TALES FROM THE CRYPT in all its gory glory.

Who are some of the other criminally forgotten names who helped make this series the smash hit?

Will the rights ever get figured out or will they always be lost in limbo?

Without this, do you get other darkly comedic yet edgy shows such as OZ or BARRY down the road?

Is this show more risque than even REAL SEX?

All that and some shenanigans at the boneyard!

[00:02:05] And Jada Pinkett from Menace to Society.

[00:02:10] Ooh, I love those titles.

[00:02:12] And you'll love Demon Knight.

[00:02:14] The hair! The demon's the hair!

[00:02:17] And ladies, if you think the-

[00:02:23] Thank you.

[00:02:24] Ah!

[00:02:37] It's a chapter review show.

[00:02:40] It's a chapter review show.

[00:02:52] It's a chapter review show.

[00:02:55] It's a chapter review show.

[00:02:59] It's a chapter review show.

[00:03:00] It's a chapter review show.

[00:03:16] Alrighty gang, we are going back into anthology territory.

[00:03:20] No, not Doctor Who, not MSD Vrigai, not Twilight Zone.

[00:03:24] Telz from The Crypt.

[00:03:25] comic book adaptation that was the first to feature the whole HBO brand it's not

[00:03:30] TV it has you know run for seven seasons three movies two earlier movies as well

[00:03:36] as other local convention appearances of the Crypt Keeper played by stand-up

[00:03:42] comedian John Kassir HBO in recent years has lost the license so it is not

[00:03:47] streaming anywhere but you can watch every episode on YouTube or get it on

[00:03:50] DVD yeah I looked at the price for the whole collection

[00:03:54] yeah I think I saw it on Amazon Prime for like 50 bucks for Wow it's not a crazy

[00:04:00] history I've had dads from the Crypt on before and they produced the podcast

[00:04:05] called how not to make a movie which has the head writers Al Katz and Gil Adler who

[00:04:11] have worked that pretty much that's where you get that name from yeah apologies

[00:04:15] yeah I can't call him Gil Palmer Gil Heller here with me tonight or yeah Gil

[00:04:20] Palmer speaking here hello I'm your host Sully James vampire of the hour Bruno

[00:04:29] yeah Tom not Yoda not Crypt Keeper just Chucky

[00:04:35] I've been called worse so I'll take that it's a couple of it

[00:04:40] believe or not coincidentally Kevin Yeager worked on the effects for both

[00:04:44] Chucky and he confirmed in interviews that the Crypt Keepers eyes are

[00:04:47] actually Chucky's eyes yeah you want to talk about a show that was like hot for

[00:04:51] a minute a lot of people talk about but not everyone looks at it's like they

[00:04:55] used to show re edited reruns on Fox sci-fi channel and even Chiller and then

[00:05:00] it just kept vanishing but the how not to make a movie podcast is great

[00:05:04] because the two lead writers explain all the utter bullshit that went on on the

[00:05:08] Portello blood movie set how it was a bad script no one wanted to make it

[00:05:12] and yet Dennis Miller was impossible to work with we'll focus less on that

[00:05:16] we'll focus on the good here that there's this show is notable for crazy plot

[00:05:20] twists outrageous guest appearances and having a movie look hey hey hey man

[00:05:25] and thank you for me if you guys you guys make this little podcasting you do

[00:05:31] it makes this next the movie looks like that's like that I'll dunk when round

[00:05:35] table okay babe right man and John Kassir the stand-up comedian he had no

[00:05:46] improv experience but he was on one of those HBO shared comedian sets so the

[00:05:52] programmers knew his name and the reason he got the gig was he kept winning

[00:05:56] star search yeah he told the same free jokes in a row and he kept winning

[00:06:02] because they were so fucking hysterical and when asked you know what was your

[00:06:05] inspiration he's like it was either this or sit on my parents couch and he

[00:06:09] has since gone on to do all kinds of video game voiceovers he's even

[00:06:13] voiced the Crypt Keeper and other stuff like Animaniacs and Casper and he would

[00:06:16] made an animated cartoon for tales from yes they did yeah yeah they did the final

[00:06:22] episode that was the same Canadian company and I know James said you had

[00:06:25] seen it I couldn't find any episodes online but I do have an action figure

[00:06:30] that's from that edition they made toys for the kids show version there is

[00:06:36] some stuff on Pluto oh sweet and not because I went looking for tales from

[00:06:41] the crypt my failed tales from the Crypt Keeper on Pluto oh sweet yeah

[00:06:45] perversions of science is kind of a loose spinoff it's kind of just mainly has

[00:06:49] a sexy CGI robot host but it's a lot of the same stuff it's got a lot of the

[00:06:54] same directors portrayed by Maureen Teefe who was in fame and Bruce too that's

[00:07:00] who that was okay it was a familiar sounding voice I didn't know but you

[00:07:04] can watch all those on YouTube as well it's

[00:07:29] just about anything I'm used to that from the makers of tales from the crypt comes

[00:07:35] the new HBO series perversions of science PS because a mind is a wonderful

[00:07:41] thing to twist you've gotten all this you know turned around inside your head

[00:07:49] wild how this is such a popular show and yet it doesn't seem to be any light

[00:07:52] around the corner and resurrecting it which is a shame I watched the first

[00:07:56] season now I look back on like I'm happy I got to watch it it's like

[00:08:01] gallows humor yeah what's funny is the podcasts that are about this making of

[00:08:06] the show they confirm so many hysterical stories about producer Jill Silver and

[00:08:10] you know since he's working with all his favorites you know Richard Donner

[00:08:13] Bob Zemeckis and Walter Hill he was reusing a lot of the same film sets

[00:08:17] and crew as lethal weapon in 48 hours he was one of those you know

[00:08:21] you've seen him parodied by the Tom Cruise character in Tropic Thunder

[00:08:24] but he was just one of those he just it was one of those do as I say now as I

[00:08:28] do his apparently his office towered over all the people who visited it so he

[00:08:34] was already kind of making you very insecure the minute you walked in

[00:08:37] there he would do the infamous you know as soon as I hang up you better say

[00:08:42] yes it's like dude I appreciate you looking out for me but I don't want to

[00:08:45] do this movie right now you'll never work in this town again sport

[00:08:49] the extension of this manhood building I mean I've been talking to him

[00:08:53] but he is a character he's interesting also in that how this show has just

[00:08:59] everyone remembers just multiple episodes and I can only imagine the horror

[00:09:03] so to speak of just coming in the middle of one and saying what is this

[00:09:06] I've never heard of this you know just realizing oh it's an anthology of the

[00:09:09] week you think that was on the same time as the kids in the hall I think so

[00:09:14] so yeah and the reason they hold and Britain was just because Joel Silver

[00:09:20] hated the screen actors killed so much and he's like I'm going to stop you know

[00:09:24] just to spite you I'm not going to follow your rules we're going to go film in

[00:09:27] England I remember watching tales from the crypt on it I think it was HBO

[00:09:32] back to back dream on I think it was a show that's what they would do

[00:09:36] they would do Marathon yeah I remember this there's a joke the

[00:09:40] film mystery science uses state to for tales of the crypts after G

[00:09:44] Mons is the best thing on TV I'm surprised they never crossed over together

[00:09:51] it's kind of from the same bread and butter in a way but yeah they would

[00:09:55] reference the crib keeper quite a lot on that horror show what is your

[00:09:58] guys's kind of favorite creep keeper segments I I'll say looking in

[00:10:03] retrospect this first season the voice in the puppetry isn't quite there

[00:10:07] yet seems to be like a few seconds behind but overall there's just so

[00:10:12] many different ones where he's chain sawing people to death he's getting

[00:10:16] ready to hang himself in an earlier episode is just all I love the one I

[00:10:22] love is going to Schwarzenegger did yeah we were just talking about that

[00:10:26] off air and much like the Tom Hanks ones and Michael J Fox ones they're

[00:10:29] just so funny how they you know the cameo both in the episode as well

[00:10:34] as just it was a very fast shoot and it would just kind of gave it some

[00:10:38] more notoriety and I think by season four and five this show is on fire

[00:10:42] like there are so many other great guests and witty scripts I love also just

[00:10:48] when the creep keeper takes out the actual magazine that the episode is

[00:10:51] based on I never really read the comic it is kind of one of those like

[00:10:56] Sin City some episodes are way way like watered down and I think for good

[00:11:01] reason it would just be too morbid I know yeah and they pulled from

[00:11:07] other sources other than tales from the crypt comic they also pulled from

[00:11:11] other easy comic books also sweet some of those stories I noticed that when I

[00:11:15] see the opening credits that's the shame here no one can figure it out if

[00:11:19] Joel Silver owns it if HBO owns it but it seems like easy comics or

[00:11:23] whatever remains of their firm has gotten the rides back but well yeah

[00:11:28] thanks to you know the Senate subcommittee on juvenile delinquency

[00:11:33] in the 1950s they basically attacked easy comics and pretty much

[00:11:38] eliminate the eliminate their entire line leaving them only with like mad

[00:11:42] magazine yeah so my god yeah and then another one called crazy that was

[00:11:47] that was a marvel look oh wow I didn't know I would but yeah it was

[00:11:54] easy comic is the easy comic is how I got into the show because I was

[00:12:01] sweet with that I I did I did project a few projects in high school and

[00:12:06] college about comic books and I talked a little bit about the easy

[00:12:10] comic especially and William Gaines and sweet and the whole thing and the

[00:12:19] whole thing came down to where I watched the show I liked it but I

[00:12:24] also can't notice there was some stuff that it felt watered down as

[00:12:28] compared to the comics because back then when Taylor the Crypt

[00:12:32] Walton core that sort of thing those were really gruesome and oh yeah

[00:12:37] really and but there was always a sense of Poe justice at the end

[00:12:43] I saw the same things in the in the show but but they go from

[00:12:48] seeing somebody decapitated to what I saw was a little bit of a

[00:12:53] step down that way but you the writing was solid the acting

[00:12:57] was solid and I'll go a step further John Kaseer did a fantastic

[00:13:02] job sublime as the Cryptkeeper one of the things that I noticed

[00:13:07] right off the bat was that so much of the stuff that he did remind

[00:13:12] me of Albert Hitchcock presents and the outfit Hitchcock did

[00:13:18] before his black return Hitchcock is even in one of those

[00:13:23] episodes I think Zemeckis does he recreate some there's

[00:13:27] nods to cuckoo's nest and hammer horror and even the shining

[00:13:31] in a few different ones but like you say it's just even if it's

[00:13:35] not as gruesome as the comic it's just you still get a reward

[00:13:38] at the end where you just like see this is a successful

[00:13:41] taking out the cookie out of the jar and being like man that

[00:13:45] was a hell of a delicious eat yeah and and the other thing

[00:13:50] that I kind of go back on is going forward I almost there

[00:13:55] was a robotic skeleton on the late show with Craig Ferguson

[00:14:01] and Peterson and I got vibe to that too. I was like it's

[00:14:07] I got a serious vibe to that. It's like the most like the

[00:14:11] first second season they were kind of playing along with it

[00:14:14] and then they perfected it and then with Jeff Peterson it's

[00:14:17] like they went backwards. Yeah great effect but the whole

[00:14:23] thing is just I that they that had to be a really tight

[00:14:28] production to be honest. It really was know your stuff. The

[00:14:32] producers were really awesome at letting the guys have as much

[00:14:37] freedom as they want but if nothing had been filmed for free

[00:14:39] hours that's when they would come over the hardest one to do

[00:14:42] apparently was the one Toby Hooper did the thing I think

[00:14:45] about when I think of that show is first off the music is

[00:14:48] Danny Elfman right. Oh great theme there's so many

[00:14:51] treasure the Sierra Madre kind of tells of just you know people

[00:14:55] with greed just getting the best of them. Yeah. Yeah there's

[00:14:59] plenty of winners. There was one episode I wasn't crazy about

[00:15:02] but at the end it's worth it because they actually have

[00:15:04] the Crypt Keeper sawing Joel Silver and half of the chainsaw.

[00:15:08] Oh wow. It was kind of their very meta is like okay you're

[00:15:11] going to be an asshole bossing us around we're going to have

[00:15:13] you die on screen. We'll return after these messages.

[00:16:32] cool cats check them out yeah and it's just just

[00:16:41] listening off the you remember this episode with so on

[00:16:43] so on so I'm just I've been listening and just hearing

[00:16:46] all the names that were tied to this so many great TV

[00:16:50] actors even martial artists and B movie stars making rare

[00:16:54] mainstream appearances yeah to be to be corny but I could say

[00:16:59] that that was a killer role right there yeah absolutely you're

[00:17:04] gonna you're gonna have to tell me who the guy is but

[00:17:07] there's in the matrix there's a guy who betrays everybody

[00:17:10] yeah Joe Pintoliano yeah that's the one with he's in that

[00:17:13] episode Joe Pesci and it's just a small part Richard Donner

[00:17:17] reunion in a way but yeah they make use of the radio

[00:17:19] stuff quite a lot yeah I'm just amazed to just listen to some

[00:17:24] of the you guys talk about some of the episodes and think

[00:17:26] you're well this kind of relates to this show or this

[00:17:29] kind of relates to this movie as it's like but in a good way

[00:17:31] without being in a very good way yeah they're not ripping

[00:17:36] them you're not ripping off anybody they're copying

[00:17:38] based on your mom just to it and so they have elevated

[00:17:42] the original source material I was kind of pissed that

[00:17:45] they're not putting on streaming yeah ridiculous like there's no

[00:17:50] reason for anyone to I mean they can you imagine how much

[00:17:53] money they'd make it seems like Kaseer owns the rights to his

[00:17:57] persona so he can go in person and voice the

[00:18:00] Crypt Keeper but it's like the comic book Joel Silver and

[00:18:03] HBO aren't flipping and aren't making it clear who owns

[00:18:07] what but it would make crazy yeah it would kill it's kind

[00:18:10] of it's kind of sad yeah I watched some episodes on

[00:18:12] YouTube tonight but it was kind of you know poor video tape quality

[00:18:17] yeah there were plenty of them where I saw the logo and I'm

[00:18:20] like I gotta get a different kind of this is bad

[00:18:23] and I'm I'm kind of ambivalent about it on the one hand I think

[00:18:28] you're I think you're right it would do gangbusters or

[00:18:31] it was on streaming the other side the coin I'm seeing is

[00:18:35] would there be enough of a of a new audience to sit down

[00:18:39] and watch an anthology show that where it does take a little bit of time to develop

[00:18:44] and maybe doesn't have that quick payoff versus I look at from you have like say

[00:18:51] you have a 30-minute show you can do one 30th episode

[00:18:54] minus for commercials or you can do two or three 10 to 15-minute episodes with

[00:19:02] with commercials that is very true and pretty much like who's lying every

[00:19:06] episode come or an average sitcom every episode literally breaks down to 20 minutes

[00:19:11] if you don't include the theme and yeah and I'm also looking at the standpoint of

[00:19:16] like an attention span kind of thing we have people who know who who's a lot who live on

[00:19:20] TikTok yeah unfortunately yeah yeah so okay so that will truly limits what what the show can do

[00:19:28] I know there's a new creep show tv show

[00:19:32] yeah I have seen it I didn't really care to you but I think what you say is a lot of truth

[00:19:39] it's there is audience out there but you're not sure how much of it could still stop

[00:19:44] someone from just picking their phone up and it's like well these that's how this works there's no

[00:19:50] reversing it there's no yeah you have to let the story breathe you can't just do it in it

[00:19:58] do a redacted version where the creeper shows up for three seconds you have one person getting

[00:20:05] killed and then there's a sloppy ending it doesn't work like that you need to absolutely for the

[00:20:09] story to breathe instead of accusing him hey it ended too fast it's like well you cut out all the

[00:20:14] development I think the closest you're gonna get now with HBO if you want to talk to noir

[00:20:21] looking like morality tell with dark comedy I think Barry's probably the closest yeah if you

[00:20:26] want to go to actual dark fantasy horror sci-fi probably the canceled lovecraft country might

[00:20:33] be the closest well the thing I always said about is tales is tales from the crypt is

[00:20:39] you go back five years before that it was tales from the dark side yes that's right

[00:20:44] John Harrison Romero's right-hand man actually worked on both yeah shows so and then if you

[00:20:50] go back even more the gallows humor comes from creep show yes yes if you watch creep show

[00:20:57] and creep not the second one but the first one yes there's a lot of humor in that you know

[00:21:03] is that the one that has Ted dance in it yeah Stephen King yep yep and I can hold my breath for a long

[00:21:09] time

[00:21:13] whoopsie where's my cake

[00:21:18] yeah just rare kind of off-color stuff man that's a good point too though I think if you did it

[00:21:24] nowadays they would pick a comedian who's too distracting or not good at narrating or they

[00:21:29] would just be too gross like in your face to where you're like like this is just dumb

[00:21:36] yeah and then you'll you also have to worry about the subject matter too because some of the stuff

[00:21:41] that's covered entails and tales from the crypt I'm not sure how much but which fly today

[00:21:48] yeah a lot of political correctness kind of stuff you could do the adultery but yeah there would

[00:21:53] be ones where it's like someone's been a stripper since they were like 17 and then there's other

[00:21:58] ones like you say incest or home invasions that are just very unnerving and too realistic

[00:22:04] yeah and um beyond that um we're gonna have people who are going to be freaked out by I mean

[00:22:11] you have people right now who are saying that Seinfeld was offensive

[00:22:15] oh come on seriously I serious I can understand not liking friends but don't tell me Seinfeld

[00:22:22] is an asshole oh my god I think they're getting the person mixed up with the comedian

[00:22:26] but I'm sorry the damage is done he's a good comedian it's not even the comedian it's

[00:22:31] it's the entire show same thing with friends they're upset that friends wasn't more diverse

[00:22:36] so that was a that'd be another stumbling blocky I think the only way diverse oh my god yeah we have

[00:22:43] we have a blonde a brunette are you sure Tyler was dating both Joey and Ross what else do you want

[00:22:50] oh my god ridiculous I'll never get that I'll never get that it's like there's someone who's

[00:22:58] late to the party but wants to just keep nagging nagging nagging nagging and it's just like uh

[00:23:05] yeah you're beating a dead horse and where were you when I needed you I think the lecture yeah

[00:23:10] about the yeah the only the only way I think you could even do chance undercooked today would be

[00:23:17] would be more of a more about direct um streaming service more I don't see like a

[00:23:24] shutter or shutter can do it um I think a shout would be good amazon would be pretty cool um

[00:23:31] there's there are some other ones I mean I would but how funny would it be if Clyde Barker

[00:23:39] helped out oh then you really have a morality tell it's the pinhead and creep keeper hour

[00:23:46] yeah my face is not funny oh yes it is there you just jumped in the one the only movie reviewer

[00:23:55] Jonathan mark is here to share some awesome stories of the creep keeper how you been

[00:24:00] I've been good perfect how about y'all we've been kind of going into some of our favorite episodes

[00:24:05] um we'll let you share how you came across the show post 90s post 2000s well it's really my dad's

[00:24:13] co-worker who was a huge fan of the show time oh he scared the hell out of me because he had the

[00:24:18] creep keeper up in masking his car he wow he kind of scared the show I mean they are

[00:24:27] method acting yeah I'm like thanks so it's it's got me for years before I could watch the show

[00:24:36] um

[00:24:38] and finally I did when I was sitting at high yeah there you go nice get it eventually

[00:24:43] become a big fan I scared with demon night as well so yep we haven't talked enough about that

[00:24:49] movie it's like you know say what you want about the other ones it's like people seem to

[00:24:53] really love this one it didn't take off this first release but now people quote it they love

[00:24:58] the villains and the cast and it's certainly the better of the two yeah totally from dustle

[00:25:05] dawn totally ate this movie almost a tips tails Mcriff movie right it was set so this is a good time

[00:25:12] to talk about that the frighteners and from dustle dawn and a few other ones were meant to

[00:25:17] originally be episodes or movies and uh the right the film respected filmmakers all moved away

[00:25:23] and said we're not waiting for silver besters to adapt this

[00:25:27] which I don't blame them especially how Joe Silva is the producer yeah something else

[00:25:32] I wonder if the AI he was showing at was in the creep keeper's voice for that recent

[00:25:37] getting fired from Amazon story what why do I remember a couple of years ago like they were

[00:25:46] going on somebody was going on somebody put something on Facebook saying it's coming back

[00:25:52] I think they were building up the hype like him nice Shyamalan was supposed to do a TNT version

[00:25:57] that never took off and then I think people were we've been talking so much about social media and

[00:26:02] how today's audiences would destroy the show because they're not patient I think some people

[00:26:08] loved it but they were talking about it on social media they were gonna redo it

[00:26:14] and I think John Kaseere was bored to do it and then it just it just fizzled out

[00:26:20] that sucks I don't know why it's so hard which to happen right we're still trying to figure out

[00:26:27] the rights and I thank you again John for introducing me so that tells from the Crip podcast how not

[00:26:31] to make a movie in dads it's just so many great stories from all these great storytellers

[00:26:37] yeah I don't know what how you would use it now but it seems like the comic book firm and

[00:26:44] is holding steady HBO lost the rights but I don't know if Jill Silver still owns any stake in it

[00:26:49] I'd like to know but like they had a lawyer friend on dads from the Crip to debate it and he

[00:26:56] still said it was very murky who owns what yeah it's like a superman you know for a while

[00:27:02] they didn't know who owned it really was it EC was it snow

[00:27:06] the salt guys had their hands on it at one time too I'm not sure oh wow

[00:27:11] and we all know how that turned out Marvel took over Malibu everyone buying each other

[00:27:17] everybody's owned by somebody if memory serves I think DC took over the EC comic stuff

[00:27:24] yeah they did that would make better sense yeah because they do publish bad magazine now too

[00:27:31] what might which if you really think about it you could do a mad

[00:27:36] a dark comedy version of mad with the crew

[00:27:44] go for it just do it yeah DC wanted to do a streaming service I think Kail through

[00:27:50] group would be with fit right into that kind of thought that they already have a

[00:27:53] they did it briefly then they shut it down and merged it with HBO Max but like you say

[00:28:01] you got to fire the vice president of programming first if you want anything to change though

[00:28:05] I would be so mad to be working for that company now I mean how do you make so many movies that

[00:28:11] will never be released legally and you can't put it on your resume or use

[00:28:15] demo real footage I would be angry as I'll get out like what what you take on Kaseer's voice

[00:28:22] why does it appeal so much like why is it so dead funny unintended when you're a kid

[00:28:28] and you see a horror movie you know there's like they do but you see those horror anthology movies for

[00:28:33] a horror hammer yes it was always some British guy like a dark robe going you know you know

[00:28:39] and here comes this you know this is like this high pitched you know you know like you know

[00:28:47] this like the ratings yeah kind of voice you know it's like R rated Scooby-Doo in a way kind of yeah

[00:28:54] and it's like you know you're watching him and you're like you're trying hard not to be frightened

[00:29:00] but it's disarming the voice is disarming it really does lend your defenses down shields lower

[00:29:06] take me on a ride take me on a journey it's a lot like a roller coaster because you're

[00:29:12] you're getting seated in and you know you're gonna have fun so you're really happy at the very

[00:29:16] beginning so you're when the when the scares come then it's like wow you were yeah it acts as a

[00:29:25] for lack of dirt from a palette cleanser it really does it'd be funny to do a survey of how many people

[00:29:32] were frightened to death versus piss themselves laughing when they first saw it it'd be funny

[00:29:37] to do a survey like that I I always liked that you know to me there was always you know horror

[00:29:42] camp yeah so you're just like wow here's his lair and here he's doing crazy shit and it's gonna

[00:29:49] have something to foreshadow what tell he's going to share with us yeah it's so much fun

[00:29:56] army of darkness would have fit in well with this world you know I'm really surprised with all

[00:30:01] we were talking about the early guys they used like Stephen Hopkins and Russell Mulcahy I am really

[00:30:06] surprised that Bruce Campbell Bruce Campbell or Sam Raimi didn't get a chance but I don't know Joe Dante

[00:30:14] should have been here yeah I'm surprised Bruce Campbell wasn't on an episode of the show oh yeah I

[00:30:19] at least not from my member we checked the closest we got was Tim Curry and a few other cold actors

[00:30:25] with Sam Raimi's brother Ted in any by any chance let me check the closest we seem to have is Kevin

[00:30:32] Yeager but yeah Ted Raimi he was in a straight to video anthology called tells from the crapper so

[00:30:40] okay that's by Deloitte confident oh my god oh my god James Gunn is in there as himself uh freaking

[00:30:47] Trey Parker from South Park wow I hope I not heard of this shit wow I was afraid to find that one

[00:30:53] I am afraid to find out yes was Craven plays himself wow okay uh the things you learned doing

[00:31:00] research there was a tells from the crypt movie in the 70s right so yeah does it even remember who

[00:31:06] was in Peter Cushing John Collins John Collins was in John Collins and yeah Peter Cushing yeah yeah

[00:31:13] and there's also uh the vault of horror which is another one that that came out from amicus

[00:31:20] from another ec line and that one had Tom Baker in it there you go I just knew we were

[00:31:30] there you go yeah true yeah Cushing we are some of your favorite guest stars John

[00:31:37] yeah Jen Nelson yeah there's so many I can aim off the top it's a puzzle piece in a way seems like the

[00:31:43] curry and rib one got a lot of favor in this episode so that's fun even if one's just flat out lousy I

[00:31:49] never have any regrets you know just because they're doing something none of us can do not from

[00:31:56] pretty lame then I'm just like still that that was fun yeah I'd like to see it come back but

[00:32:02] I think it's already immortalized people are showing kind of like Howard we were talking

[00:32:07] Mr. Science Theater earlier it's the same kind of thing people circulate the tapes and just laugh

[00:32:11] their asses off at it still yeah I think people would be disappointed in whatever new one they

[00:32:17] try to create it wouldn't be the same that's also a possibility I suppose I think I mean

[00:32:27] yeah probably I would like to actually see the South Park creators actually

[00:32:33] try something with it or someone else who does a cartoon show and just see if they have some

[00:32:39] off-color humor but it might be too much for zone good I don't know I think we have a pitch for

[00:32:45] South Park in studios there you go but even night is a perfect party movie like it's so

[00:32:52] laid back without being too lowbrow it's just very straightforward and the cast is dynamite

[00:32:58] you know you got freaking cch pounder and and uh yeah uh and uh what's her name the heroine of the

[00:33:07] story yeah uh jade pinkett and yep jade pinkett before she was really saying that yep yep yep

[00:33:14] he was the Billy's day and William Sadler yep yeah and Sadler is the unlikely hero and I like how

[00:33:22] zane is literally kind of the terminator warlock she's just going to town he's just time to play

[00:33:29] time to play yeah yeah zane was really like eating up the scenery in that movie absolutely there

[00:33:35] was no taking it down a notch but it seems like everyone had fun making that one on like again

[00:33:40] the next one and it sucks because portillo was kind of my intro to it I'm like this should be entertaining

[00:33:47] but it's really frankly boring and I've heard good things about this show so yeah as a warning

[00:33:52] it's a prime example of the behind the scenes of it being better than the movie itself so

[00:33:59] absolutely even the ones that were in the unofficial fox pilot that never got picked up

[00:34:03] that had a young brad pit is like a beatnik and the Kurt Douglas Lance Henrykson

[00:34:10] pass a glory tribute those were pretty good but and were later included as episodes on the show

[00:34:17] however the one with that frank darabont of sha shang fame that he writes that has david

[00:34:23] morris in a western that one is just so perplexing and like it begins then it just ends I'm like

[00:34:29] what the fuck just happened it was the longest viewing of the flat it was the longest escape

[00:34:37] I'm surprised Freeman wasn't on here be perfect sometimes you show that last forever

[00:34:48] sometimes you make a TV show that won't be on streaming because you don't know who all the

[00:34:54] rats and you free knew who those rats were from but he didn't say anything to anybody

[00:35:01] get busy slaughtering or get busy dying

[00:35:07] were you guys fans of john casier and others forms I heard his voice so many times when playing

[00:35:12] a hot shot stoff growing up I can't even picture the face of the guy so I don't know

[00:35:18] he's a bearded kind of individual but he's done so many voiceovers you probably have

[00:35:22] heard him in a disney or Pixar or thing but at the time he's like additional dialogue recording

[00:35:27] but in hot shots golf he was great because when you're getting tired of people taking too long to

[00:35:33] swing the puck swing the golf ball you can start trolling them and he's one of the voices

[00:35:41] saying you can do it so I feel like he if there's any signature style for him he's

[00:35:49] like the likable internet troll he's riffing on you and then justifying his existence by being so

[00:35:57] clever ritual which was the third on official movie everyone doing themselves a favor and never watch

[00:36:03] that one I see it's on that's on his thing it's so bad like the puppet and mouth and voice don't

[00:36:10] even match up and Kim Curry's coincidentally in that one too he's like the head of this island

[00:36:14] where people are killing each other it's like it's trying to be like a gothic mystery but it's

[00:36:18] like come on Jennifer Gray you don't have to be in this shit oh it's bad it's like it was in

[00:36:26] development hell for like six years and they just released a directive video no one like

[00:36:32] face frightening frightening I would like to see the wishmaster host another reiteration of

[00:36:38] Crip he and the keeper would get along pretty well you know that you know when you think about

[00:36:45] too the crypt keeper himself you know we introduce it and they do the outro yes it was kind of like

[00:36:52] he was he was us you know absolutely we would be thinking of like you know if somebody thought

[00:36:59] that's that that's it means like he's like our subconscious you know he's the subconscious

[00:37:04] he's the voyeur and the main theme is all elfman but if you hear it with the theme when it

[00:37:12] exits out every episode it almost in a way sounds a bit like a demented twilight zone

[00:37:22] and and think about it is that in the comics that's what the Crip keeper was he was the one who

[00:37:29] introduced the story thinking it was the point of reference he was the gatekeeper

[00:37:36] yeah oh he might want to relock his gates just about everyone visited his castle

[00:37:43] there is no jano only do

[00:37:48] I'll put in more more play for the amicus version of the film if you are an anthology buff like I am

[00:37:56] you will get a lot of enjoyment out of it and just every little piece is really well done

[00:38:02] so it's also a good point to involve a poor too yeah just for the sheer fact that

[00:38:07] its anthologies done well there's even times where some x-files episodes and even the dentist movies

[00:38:14] and trilogy of terror always feel to me like they could have gotten a Crip treatment at one point

[00:38:20] exactly but if you're looking for the kind of bizarre humor you can't the TV show is where

[00:38:26] you're gonna is where you want to be but if you're more the anthology side definitely check

[00:38:30] out the 70s movies absolutely for a show that starts off slow it gains your attention like you

[00:38:36] were looking forward to it you're laughing like a maniac even when it's too over the top there's just

[00:38:41] something very shameless about it I would defy anytime john gaseer made an appearance on robot

[00:38:47] chicken playing reprising the Crip keeper too because it was just like perfect even more dark humor

[00:38:52] there you go get stuff green either that or idle hands too now don't do that

[00:39:00] that's pretty bad

[00:39:05] idle hands too is bad you shouldn't watch idle hands too good

[00:39:14] mr hanky I'm mr mafie good

[00:39:17] mr mafie you shouldn't get me confused with somebody else okay

[00:39:29] we'll say sometimes the Crip keeper will die

[00:39:35] there you go let's get stuff McFarlane here now hey Peter you want to go see the Crip

[00:39:41] I don't know quite why sir I did something to me the last time

[00:39:45] what do you do yeah uh yeah show me his bone

[00:39:51] no it's bone like his bone on his leg that's a great Peter

[00:39:55] yeah it is oh well you know I'm showing my bone a lot of women wait wait wait wait wait

[00:40:03] it's been a minute since I've watched that show but apparently I'm so I don't know if they've

[00:40:07] made fun of Crip but I know at one point Brian the dog is like surfing through HBO Max and then he

[00:40:13] finds a clip so real sex and he's like why is this not on there oh Jesus why Jesus surprised

[00:40:19] no one else is gonna get that reference

[00:40:22] then come to Hawaii and the next time cloud nine all new real sex nine premiere Saturday

[00:40:37] August 13th on HBO

[00:40:41] but yeah HBO is like almost an animal farm at times where you're like yep it's on there I don't know why

[00:40:48] HBO during the 90s if you wanted to see like weird shit right you would wait

[00:40:53] clap tails for the crypt is done yes and then you watch real sex and you'd be like

[00:40:59] what in the name of holy fuck is this I'm sure that in your group I'm still looking

[00:41:04] for this bizarre like cover up of like a couple who like hides their friends accidental death after

[00:41:11] a sex party and people start betraying each other and I keep asking about it everyone's like oh are

[00:41:16] you referencing go are you talking about very bad things I'm like nope no no this is a way more

[00:41:21] obscure and I think you're talking about my life oh there you go yeah it's a Belclin story

[00:41:30] oh man oh that took a dark turn

[00:41:34] oh shit but yeah I feel like people don't really know how to do shock value it seems like Tarantino

[00:41:41] is the only one they let loose because somehow even the dumbest person knows what they're in for

[00:41:46] I don't know how you know look at the room I'll take I'll take super I would say if they

[00:41:50] ever make another tails of the clip movie and God knows they should make it Robert Rodriguez

[00:41:55] directing it well maybe yeah planet terror is as close to an episode of

[00:42:03] of tales from the crypt as you could get without it being stamped approved when having giant

[00:42:10] kaseer showing up and saying hi kid I got now I'm remembering when you know Quentin Tarantino's

[00:42:18] parts were falling off wow you're just like seeing this you know goop of skin falling down

[00:42:27] from between his legs oh man whenever he dies on screen it's the best

[00:42:33] oh no wait a bit bordella blood that was the Dennis Miller one where unfortunately yeah

[00:42:38] sure with chat chat could get this we're gonna have chris serandon but he's not playing a vampire

[00:42:44] this time get it Corey Hime or Feldman he's gonna play a vampire this time get it Dennis Miller

[00:42:51] that here's why every why he doesn't work in this movie apparently he refused to follow any line of

[00:42:57] the script he just wanted to do his improvised stand-up bit I'm like my god and then he wanted

[00:43:02] people to party with him when they wrapped that movie and then he ditched it on his HBO

[00:43:07] talk show I'm like for real you're the reason it didn't work who was the woman that wasn't

[00:43:12] and oh yes oh I watch everything she's in but what and she ever heard oh yeah yeah oh yes

[00:43:25] she reminds me of and thought the real very fun but Eric Oliniak kind of just really hated making

[00:43:33] it because like they kept rewriting her storyline to where she's like I'm gonna just suck it up

[00:43:37] and get this over with let's check from ET but that's not what anybody remembers her from oh that's

[00:43:43] right understage my bad that's true speaking of the spillboard connection did you guys know that

[00:43:48] originally spillboard wanted to do something with a crypt keeper but still silver was an

[00:43:53] asshole and held him up yeah I didn't know that I know that oh yeah it's on the podcast

[00:43:58] introduced me too but it's just so funny he's like man that's just something you just don't do

[00:44:04] you don't hold up the best filmmaker of all time sure I'm gonna buy a house for Kate

[00:44:10] and I'm gonna I'm gonna make you a star I'm gonna do an awesome war movie everyone will get paid it'll

[00:44:15] be fun that's my spillboard I'm not sure it's much of an impression but whatever

[00:44:22] there you go it's gotta be a little jimmy stewardish yeah so I had this idea to make a

[00:44:27] movie about like you know the great thing about making you too was you know oh it's funny there

[00:44:32] there are some indiana jones moments on this show also at times oh yeah yeah there's the one way

[00:44:38] down to michael hall which is kind of a like it or hated episode where it's almost like they're

[00:44:43] spoofing ferris buehler and john hughes for like the first hour and then at the end

[00:44:46] they find out there's like a giant vault with a tunnel behind the library here's like that's

[00:44:52] weird okay and I already mentioned short round but yeah there's plenty of gremlins moments and

[00:45:00] I think yeah gizmo and the crypt keeper would definitely get along gizmo you probably scared

[00:45:04] of it at first yeah I was mentioning earlier john how I don't think fairy or lung craft

[00:45:12] country would exist without this show people act like it's the first show that broke the rules

[00:45:17] I think it was just the one that broke the rules well because there was plenty of other

[00:45:20] risque stuff on there oh yeah yeah football tv shows where you're like what's going on I do think

[00:45:26] Oz was the most to it especially how the narrator in the wheelchair just opens up you know I mean

[00:45:33] there was there was dream on there was uh yeah first and 10 there you go that that's the football

[00:45:39] one yep that had what's her name from designing women in it uh Delta Delta work in

[00:45:47] and it's so funny how she's in more reserved material but she didn't start off and stuff like

[00:45:53] Chris Maloney was on it too is like everybody was on that show all I remember watching that show

[00:45:58] I'm thinking of myself you know ogre from revenge are the nurses in this show

[00:46:02] don't give yeah Donald give yep and I remember I remember they had oj simpson on his tv parker

[00:46:10] and I like yeah right is it then meanwhile 10 years later oh guess what I'm running away from the cops

[00:46:18] I love that impression that sounded like a keystone cops

[00:46:23] that was before he was on there before naked gun I think yeah it was before

[00:46:29] the adjunct and like the other one he's a good actor he fooled everyone oh yeah

[00:46:38] he fooled a jury of 12 people he fooled us

[00:46:43] my glove doesn't fit I guess I'm not guilty oh my god I don't want to see the grip keeper reenacted

[00:46:51] look it doesn't go on I'm free that's why I was so glad it was a referring gag on Seinfeld

[00:46:57] there was always that incompetent liar oh yeah uh Philip Morris got a little um yep

[00:47:08] it's a lie it's not true I'm doing it to win oh so very fun having you guys on here uh anything

[00:47:17] you guys would care to promote in any way any capacity I know James you're starting your

[00:47:21] podcast soon hopefully if I can find a free platform he's doing some reviews what kind of
