[00:00:00] This podcast is a production of Unfiltered Studios. If you would like to know more about joining Unfiltered Studios, please visit our website at unfpod.com for more information. Dear Mom and Dad, I've been at Sleepaway Camp for almost three weeks, and I'm getting very scared.
[00:00:30] Welcome to Sleepaway Camp. Someone is watching you. Hey, lover, revolve! Someone is waiting for you. Someone wants to scare you to death.
[00:01:03] Sleepaway Camp. You won't be coming home.
[00:01:08] Sleepaway Camp.
[00:02:01] So, you're getting basically a replay. I have been a member of, well, I'm not a member, but I'm just a fan of the Legion Podcast Network, and I'm always following what a lot of the shows on that network are doing. Submitting voicemail is no exception. And one show I was following for the longest time, still do, on occasion, is CinemaSyOps. And I love what the duo, Court, and Matt come up with each week.
[00:02:28] And I tried to remaster this episode as best I could. It's my voicemail. It's the only part of the episode I'm using, so fair use under that respect. I submitted it. So, Court was short-staffed that week. Matt was out sick as co-host, and so I decided, hey, how about I share my thoughts on the slasher, trashy, fun film franchise that's been re-evaluated, surprisingly, and even more enjoyable nowadays.
[00:02:56] That is the Sleepaway Camp franchise, coasting on the hills of the Friday the 13th saga. There were free movies, crappy, barely-existent fourth installment that's kind of disowned in a trashy remake that no one saw, and I just said, hey, I'm gonna just harp on what makes the first read tick, and which is my particular favorite. So, enjoy this mini-episode where I chimed in in order to entertain the host of CinemaSyOps set.
[00:03:26] Hopefully you enjoyed listening to my ramblings as well. Enjoy. So, thank you, Court and Matt, for letting me step in at my two cents. So, once again, there's five of these movies. Only three of them are considered official by both the fans and the distributor. Long story short, the creator just came up with this movie. He only had like $350,000 for the budget.
[00:03:54] He ended up having to scrap his storyboards when they just ran behind on schedule, and summer was slowly flowing away from him to where even the scenery around him was about to be inconsistent with the previous shots. And, of course, yeah, it was meant to capitalize on the success of slasher stuff like Friday the 13th, and was often seen on Paramount and MGM-type channels.
[00:04:19] And because it basically always ends with a surprise plot twist in all three installments, that's pretty much why these movies are remembered. The kills are just outrageous and yet memorable and creative. And, of course, Pamela Springsteen's character is just so twisted. She could easily rival any other psycho, and that's just not an understatement. It's just she's that unusual in her depiction.
[00:04:49] And, yeah, it's hard to believe that the photographer and sister of singer Bruce Springsteen starred in these movies. But I'm more just captivated by how this lived up to the cult hype. You know, you can find all these on Amazon Prime or Shot Factory Blu-rays, no problem. And it is a testament, I guess, to just the subtlety and the unusual nature of it all together.
[00:05:18] Because, you know, this has survived, you know, bad reviews, utter obscurity, being cut down for both VHS and DVD due to the violent content. And yet somehow there was always someone who caught it on one of the movie channels or who remembered it from the drive-in days. And that's just how memorable it is. It's just very unusual, but, you know, just consistent with its vision, what little there is of it.
[00:05:48] And there are often slow burns, but they'll definitely be good party movies. I can't recommend them more. Court and Matt have already done a good job so far to sum this up. So, like they usually do on anything, dealing with, you know, psychotic people. But more or less, it's just very, you know, the surprises deliver.
[00:06:14] And you don't know what you're getting into even when you think you already know. The movie just keeps taking a total 180. And, you know, this is years before every movie was trying to be like Scream or, you know, other update copycats of Halloween and all that. So I think it's just because it just dares to go where it goes. That's why you can just applaud it.
[00:06:43] It's not just, I mean, it also goes into many categories. You can put it in so bad it's good. You can put it in good. You can put it in trashy fun. It works whatever you label it as. And I'd have to say the ending of part three was definitely my favorite out of all the endings, followed shortly by part one. Part two had some decent.
[00:07:07] I really thought it had the best music and probably some of the better makeup and scenery out of all the three movies. But the other supporting actors are decent and the whole thing is never a waste of time. And once again, you can find these on Amazon Prime if you're not sure you want to check it out. But if you see the first 20 minutes and you're sold, then yeah, you might upgrade and get the home media set and see if you can introduce it to some of your other pals.
[00:07:34] They'll definitely dig it if you're into wacky stuff like this. Thank you all for letting me share my portion of this review. We'll return after these messages.
