Pop Culture Analysis Week: TV Music Composer Robert Duncan Tribute

I host a brief overview on TV show composer Robert Duncan, who's credits include: Starhunter 2030, Buffy, Point Pleasant, Castle, The Gates, The Family & the new CBS version of The Equalizer.

I play an extended sample from his best known work for The Unit while also detailing other productions he contributed to for TV heavyweight Shawn Ryan (Nash Bridges, The Shield) such as Lie to Me, SWAT, Last Resort, Terriers & Netflix's The Night Agent!

Do you know of this underheard talent? You hopefully will after the day is done!

[00:00:06] It's a JackedUpReviewShow

[00:00:45] Here we are, here we are.

[00:00:47] Another TV composer, Deep Dive.

[00:00:51] So we got a Canadian composer, Robert Duncan.

[00:00:55] He claims he uses a bunch of traditional and peculiar objects as instruments to create his

[00:01:03] scores.

[00:01:04] They include grand pianos, deconstructed pianos, metal brushes, hot rod exhaust pipes, fire

[00:01:09] extinguishers and pipe organs, and among many others.

[00:01:13] Even objects from junkyards all over LA.

[00:01:15] I had no idea.

[00:01:19] So he has done so much stuff.

[00:01:23] So it starts off with a bunch of Canadian shows like Star Hunter and PSI Factor and

[00:01:28] Blue Murder in relation to the UK show.

[00:01:31] Then does a bunch of stuff for producer Sean Ryan, like The Shield, The Unit, Lidamy, Terriers,

[00:01:39] The Chicago Code and The Submarine Thriller, Last Resort.

[00:01:44] And plenty of other stuff for ABC television like The Family, Joan Allen as well as Vanished

[00:01:51] and the long running crime comedy show Castle.

[00:01:54] So he's currently scoring SWAT.

[00:02:00] He also did The Crossing as well as Timeless and Amazon Prime show Mad Dog.

[00:02:06] So I think what he does pretty well is essentially just, again, aside from just the typical percussion,

[00:02:15] he just really just dives in and just, instead of just going even first in particular mood,

[00:02:20] he mainly just jumps in and, again, just uses a bunch of different percussion and metal

[00:02:29] objects and you're just like, wow, it's such an atypical score.

[00:02:33] I'm really digging it.

[00:02:34] I can get into it and done a few animated movies, few direct video sequels and under shit.

[00:02:39] But fortunately, you can find a lot of his best stuff on iTunes and just listen to the scores alone.

[00:02:46] And I do recommend Shattered, which was a Pierce Brosnan, Gerard Butler,

[00:02:52] filler from around seven as well as the entitled, which is a kidnapping filler with Ray Leota.

[00:03:00] And I think what he does just so pitch perfect, no pun, is just dive in.

[00:03:09] Just really, I mean, he's even done true calling and Buffy.

[00:03:12] So there you go.

[00:03:13] And when he's doing piano, it's just not even a commonly used kind of piano score.

[00:03:21] So I think that's just it.

[00:03:22] If you just listen to his material, you're just like, wow.

[00:03:53] I don't think I've heard something like that before.

[00:04:27] He mixes in a bit of drums and trumpet, but all together he's just,

[00:04:33] I mean, just even his theme songs alone are just very uncommon.

[00:04:37] And I wish he would even just go into more mystery and horror than he typically does.

[00:04:44] He's did that show, The Gates and Point Pleasant.

[00:04:47] But I mean, yeah, I mean, even using his pipe organs is just very fascinating.

[00:04:53] And it's all together very well configured because it's all that

[00:04:59] pressurized air just displays on screen because you just you feel it.

[00:05:03] You really do.

[00:05:05] So thank you for listening all another quick episode down the drain.

[00:05:10] We'll return after these messages.

[00:06:07] Do you ever find yourself thinking about who would win a fight between Goku

[00:06:11] and Superman? Hi, I'm James Gavzian on the Who Would Win show.

[00:06:14] Me and my co-host Ray ignore anything important happening in the outside

[00:06:17] world and debate fictional battles between characters from comics,

[00:06:20] movies and video games.

[00:06:22] We got a new show every week and almost always am I the winner?

[00:06:26] Not true, Ray. In the past, we've discussed such matches as Captain America

[00:06:30] versus Darth Vader, Solid Snake versus the Iron Giant, classic matchups

[00:06:35] like Robocop versus Terminator and even the Muppets versus Sesame Street.

[00:06:39] That one was crazy.
