Don't Kill the Messenger with Movie Strategist Kevin Goetz- Director Donald Petrie Interview (2025)
SONG INTRO:
"She Blinded Me With Science" Cover by William Shatner
[00:00:00] This podcast is a production of Unfiltered Studios. If you would like to know more about joining Unfiltered Studios, please visit our website at unfpod.com for more information. You're a young boy running around TV sets in New York, the son of a legendary director and a pioneering producer. By high school, he's acting in theater. By film school, he's directing award-winning shorts.
[00:00:25] And reshaping the rom-com playbook with Miss Congeniality, that boy, of course, is Donald Petrie, who has a deep understanding of character, chemistry, and the audience. Donald, you're a former actor-turned-director. You've worked with performers, navigated audience feedback. You've continued a family legacy steeped in storytelling. And I want to add integrity. I am so thrilled to have you welcome.
[00:00:54] It's great to be here. Hey, let me move on to Miss Congeniality. Well, I will tell you, working with Mark Lawrence, when I came on to that movie, I was a replacement director. I don't know who the original was, and I don't know how any falling out happened. All I know is I got a call to go in and meet on this script. But I had a lot of ideas for where I felt the script should go.
[00:01:24] The script originally was a comedy about pageants, and it kind of spoofed pageants. And I went in there, and I'm meeting with Sandy and Mark Lawrence, the writer, and the Castle Rock people. And I said, listen, right off the bat, you don't make a comedy about pageants. You treat a pageant real, and it will spoof itself.
[00:01:55] Whereas the movie I want to make is Lethal Weapon. And Sandy, you're Mel Gibson. This tough as nails, a little bit crazy, shoot first, ask questions later. That's the character I need, you know, somebody who has subjugated every female bone in her body to do this man's job in a man's world, who then has to go undercover in the pageant.
[00:02:23] And that was the way we shaped it. We were writing it as we were going. What an incredible directive to give to your star. I mean, that is so specific and so actionable. Like, you can really turn that into something. You know what I mean? That was me pitching to direct it. And, you know, a week later, because they were meeting, like, four or five other directors. Well, who wouldn't give you the job after that?
[00:02:49] So a week later, I got the job and was on a plane the next day to Texas. But a lot of Sandy is—like, I had dinner with Sandy, and I must have said something funny. Or she laughed at something and did the snort. She laughed. And I went, oh, keep that. And that became a thing for that character, how she walked.
[00:03:18] I said, walk like you've got balls, you know? So, again, she did walk like a brontosaurus. I remember that movie tested really well. Yes, it did. Out of the gate. Was there anything you learned from the test screening process in that particular picture? Yeah, we reshot the ending. Tell us about it. Well, we reshot the ending. The original ending, after they've arrested Candace Bergen and are putting her in the police car,
[00:03:46] up came Michael Caine as Vic. And he says, oh, Kathy, how could you have done this, right? And she says, oh, you didn't talk to me like that when we were sleeping together. And both Benjamin and Sandy look at Mr. Vic and go, Mr. Vic, all right. Kind of the feeling like, whoa, you've been playing us all along.
[00:04:15] We always thought you were gay and you're really not. And the gay audience hated it. They said, we finally have an unapologetically gay man in a movie played by Michael Caine. And then you realize they only really like him after it's revealed he's not gay.
[00:04:38] And so we took that out and reshot the ending so that it's not Michael Caine coming up at all. It's Sandy putting Candace Bergen in the car. And it's a scene between Sandy and Candace Bergen is how it ended up. And it was 10 times better. Because the focus was not on the ancillary character.
[00:05:03] It was on your two main characters, which is why the audience liked that, I think, also much more. I got to get my hat off to Shatner's role in Miss Congeniality. Not just the first one, but part two. Yeah. Out of all stupid, again, once again, another parody sequel. He's in. He actually gets way more screen time. Gets to make fun of his all his, you know, moments where he's in danger and all his other, you know, well-known characters like T.J. Hooker and Kirk.
[00:05:31] You know, the movie one was interesting just seeing Candace Bergen play an evil bitch and just see Benjamin Bratt kind of make fun of his law and order role. But this one was just at least just watchable. It was cool seeing Sandra once again just playing action star. Something she's kind of abandoned in favor of all these stupid movies she does now. But Shatner really just steals every scene he's in. Gets to escape from like a water trap.
[00:07:01] For America's most wanted comedy. FBI, you might want to stay out of this. Oh, God. Forget your problems and laugh. Miss Congeniality has been nominated for two Golden Globe Awards. Oh, yeah. Miss Congeniality is back. You can't wear a swimsuit on this mission. You could be the new face. Dressed. I'm your bodyguard. You might consider a tic-tac. Undercover. Oh, I'm Ida Flammenbaum. How are you? And out of control. Take it back.
[00:07:30] Ow, ow, ow, ow. I feel like a woman again. Sandra Bullock. You will never make it if you don't start using your head. Miss Congeniality 2. Armed and Fabulous. Are we Sandra Bullock fans here? Yes, I am. Kinda. Yeah. Kinda. What about Kim Basinger? Well, she's hot. Kim Basinger. She's fine, too. But I gotta say, Sandra Bullock should come back to Miss Congeniality. I haven't seen the second one.
[00:08:00] It's not as great, but I mean, like. Well. It's like. You're chiming. That's the ultimate girl with glasses turning hot movie. Yeah. I was like, I'm gonna go undercover. We're getting Practical Magic 2 now, right? Wasn't that? Yeah. She's doing Practical Magic 2. So I'm like, yeah. Come back is. What's her name? It's like. Miss Pageant. Gracie Hart. I'm like, what the hell? What kind of action name is that? What was the one she did where she came back as the.
[00:08:30] Like she goes back and Jenna Rollins. She's with. I couldn't tell the fucking movies apart, but. Jenna Rollins was in the movie with her. And Sandra Bullock. Hope floats. Yeah. Hope floats. That's a good one. Which. Forrest Whitaker. That was on ABC Family 24 seven. That was a good movie. I liked her in the one where she played the tollbooth taker. And the guy. Oh, while you were sleeping. While you were sleeping. It was cute. That was good.
[00:08:59] She was adorable in Love Potion number nine. I didn't see that. Hey. And she got. And you know what Highlander stars in that? Yeah. Adrian Paul. Tate Donovan. He's in there too. Yeah. That's a Highlander in. Hercules. Speed should have stopped after speed. It was. That was a great movie. Then they had to make speed too. Oh, God. You know, no one has for speed. The boat's got to hit land. But that's what I'm saying. It's like. Miss Congeniali. That was perfect. It's like.
[00:09:28] Like, you're an undercover FBI agent. And you got to pose as a beauty queen. The thing I love about speed too is Tim O'Morish and playing the. The guy who's helping. Django Fett is having to tell them how to stop a damn boat. And even he's like. Tim Conway is their driving instructor. But he should have been. Been in another movie with her. I think. Because that was. He's. He's fun. Because she rips it. He's on the Blu-ray. Rips it? Oh, she rips it? No, she rips it. Oh, she rips it?
[00:09:57] Yeah, yeah, yeah. Riff. Like riff tracks riff. Oh, God. Wait, wait. Blu-ray is this. Speed 2 Cruiser. Yeah. Because. She knew it wasn't good. But she wasn't in an opportunity to turn down words. So. You know why Jason Patrick did that, right? I don't actually. You said the only reason he did that. Was. He wanted to take all the money he gets from it. For. Your friends and neighbors. Ah.
[00:10:26] The financial. Oh. That's smart. That's smart. Yeah. Um. Do you guys like Salma Hayek? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Kind of. Teaves. When she's in a good movie, which is very rare. She did a movie that I love. Where her and I think it was Penelope Cruz played Bandits. Yeah. Yeah. No. Teaves on it. Oh, no.
[00:10:50] That movie was a kind of an indirect thing of a movie that Bridget Bardot and this other actress did where they were playing Bandits. Well, Welch. No, no, no. It was Bridget Bardot and there's another Spanish actress in it. Uh. And they were playing. So this is basically like, you know, a takeoff on that movie. I love Bandits. I love that movie that her and her.
[00:11:19] I tried, but the last just didn't deliver. I haven't seen it yet. It reminded me too much of Bad Girls with Drew Barrymore. That's a bad movie. Yeah. That's what it reminded me of. That's a bad movie. Let's do young guns, but just blow it into the ground. I got one. You know what Sandra Bullock is when she did? She got the Razzie. I was like, she got the Razzie and the Oscar the same year. Yeah.
[00:11:49] That's why. That's why I respect her. She's she knows how to handle all this shit. Which one? Well, it was all about Steve in the same day. Same year. She did the blind side and the blind side. Yeah. Yeah. It was like, it's her year. And then that movie turned out to be a whole fuck fest of joy. I know. That's what's fucked up. You're like, it's an inspiration of movies. Like, well, it's not at all the truth. I'm like, well, God fucking damn it. Who did the research? Oh, that's right. I didn't.
[00:12:20] Oh, man. You should see it once. But yeah, in 2023, you're like, I don't know how I would even watch this movie now. Yeah. The conservatorship. And then most of it wasn't even real. I'm like, that's wonderful. Oh, I. I feel the same way about Argo, where I'm like, it's going OK. And then nearly in Ben Affleck goes all action hero disarming guards. It's like there was never any gunfights during the rescue.
[00:12:48] So why the fuck is this in this movie? Is the ego really that strong? Should I consider this a parody? Those last five minutes. I don't know how to feel about that movie anymore. Kind of like, I don't know how to feel about Braveheart. It's not realistic at all. Braveheart is not that realistic. Bohemian Rhapsody isn't that realistic. Word on Bohemian Rhapsody. They fucked up the ending of that shit. Dude, I could tell you how many fucking things are wrong.
[00:13:14] Like having We Will Rock You put in one part and then having We Are The Champions put in another part where Freddy wasn't even doing. And they hired a shitty director who didn't want to do it. And I already got that feeling before I even, you know, looked up the trivia after the movie was done. I was like, yeah, I feel like someone was forced at gunpoint to do this. Oh, I mean, Brian, Brian May and Roger Taylor. They were like, yeah, this is a good thing. But first off, let me explain some things to you when you watch the movie.
[00:13:43] Freddie Mercury wasn't diagnosed with HIV until 1987. Okay. He didn't develop AIDS until like 1989. And they used it as a plot point. Okay. They used it as a plot point. Similar to EZE in Straight Outta Compton. They don't know how he got it. But yet they, yeah. Secondly, they were not at the verge of breaking up at Live Aid. What had happened was when they did Hot Space, right? They kind of lost the audience here in America. Okay. Because it was a funk, it was a funk disco record. Right.
[00:14:13] Yeah. And then they were mainly touring Europe at that time. They did the works tour. They had played South Africa and they were very, they were, they didn't even know, you know, they were, they even said they were like, you know, we wanted to play to segregated audiences. They were not at the verge of, they were not at the verge of breaking up. That's a good point. I'm surprised Mike Myers went ahead to even have a part in that because he's a huge. He's a huge man. Yeah.
[00:14:40] But there are certain, like there's certain things like they, they, they play fat bottom girls in 1973 or 74 when that doesn't come out until 1978. And they do. I would argue something about Bo, Bo rap though. The movie is it wasn't a documentary and everybody knows that he did eventually get AIDS. So, you know, they didn't claim it, you know, we're not saying you can't like it, but it
[00:15:08] is, it is interesting though, how they still, even in a good movie, they'll still get something off by like one or two years where a song will be playing. And you're like, that came out for years later. Here's a buddy franchise that everyone's afraid to talk about because it's not very great, but it kind of brings a smile because there was one star who I kind of secretly want to do a third installment of this. And that is Miss Congeniality. Miss Congeniality. I went there. Sandra B, Sandy B.
[00:15:38] Sandy B. It was like, what a brilliant assignment. I will go to a beauty pageant when I'm way too sexy and mature for such a event. And I'm a narc. The funniest part of these is like people having like her having to pretend that she's ugly. Oh, right. It doesn't work. Sandra B. You look good. And it only works as a comedy. It doesn't work if you make it serious.
[00:16:05] And so there's an interview I played at the beginning of this segment. And it's so funny. They originally had it be to where like one of the other people was in on it with the beauty pageant. It's like that just convolutes everything. Fuck no. Don't take this too seriously. This works because it's like rush hour where it's just it can't be better than Beverly Hills Cop or Lethal Weapon, but just do your own thing and then have there be a cool bomb diffusing thing. The guys like it. The women like it.
[00:16:33] I had an export door neighbor and this was on his rotation. He had all the popular, you know, martial arts kung fu movies like he. So he had rush hour. He had matrix. He had he was a huge Star Wars fanatic, but he had this continuality and some of those other action comedies on as well. And I'm just like interesting, you know, this dude. So Sandra Bullock made chick flicks. Okay. That's true. She's not in it. It sucks.
[00:16:58] I mean, I can see a through line of her being in Demolition Man, then being in Speed. Demolition Man 2 is totally a chick flicks. And then going into his congeniality in her own right. I mean, she kind of is an action star in some ways, even though we don't consider her that. And then after this. She's in Gravity. She does the heat. She does Gravity. I mean, she's been in a fair share of action movies.
[00:17:26] It's so funny, though, how the only person comes back from movie two is William Shatner. And he's like, I'll help you to sort the ball. And the movie two is like a guilty pleasure. It's not great, but I don't mind having it on. Oh, and I take it back. Ernie Hudson's back as the boss. Oh, yeah. Ernie Hudson's there. You have to have him be a police chief. But that's so silly how they didn't have been, I call him Benny B, Benjamin Bratman. And so it's a Demolition Man reunion.
[00:17:55] I'm sorry, I was just going to say that because we just saw it. But I just realized Sandra Bullock and Benny B back together. So maybe she needs to have Wesley Snipes be the bad guy. If Wesley Snipes was the bad guy in a Miss Congeniality film, it would have done. Everyone will see it. Eight more billion dollars. It's just so weird. Eight more billion. I actually did like Regina King in movie two, even though it would never be her best movie. She's playing a stereotype. It's like, oh, hell no.
[00:18:24] But I don't know. It's weird how she messed with this for a while and then went back to serious stuff. But for whatever reason, I had family members who constantly were just watching Miss Congeniality every time it was on TV. And I was like, this is kind of fun, even though some of the humor isn't hitting. And it's clearly not Lethal Weapon or Die Hard. But yeah, it's not quite funny. Yeah, it's weird. But it's like entertainingly funny. You know what I mean? It's very odd.
[00:18:54] There's some mediocre sitcom level stuff in it. And yet there's still some stuff that's pretty clever. It's kind of like B-side stuff from like other stuff that should have flopped, but was surprisingly good. Like Wade's World back in the day, just comedians going to the big screen. It was like, well, we got serious people. And it's like this was just basically stage two of her career by this point. She's already surprised and stolen the show and other stuff. And like, yeah, by this point now she can do anything she wants because she's the go to comedy gal.
[00:19:22] But it's like, I think Michael Caine makes the movie work as her suitor. He's telling her how to lose weight and walk the walk. And he's like, there's some very clever stuff. And the way he delivers it is funny. Oh, don't tone down a movie. I can't believe this. You should have seen it. I told this to both my sister and dad. My sister's a big movie maniac. And my dad doesn't do movies anymore. He only does ESPN and MLB all day. But I can tell him about a project. And sometimes I can sell him on it. It's like, hey, let me show you this one movie from the 90s.
[00:19:52] You should have seen by now. But wasn't in your rotation. But it's so funny. It's like, I go up to him and I'm like, did you see the news? They're like, what? Michael Caine retired. They're like, never. I'm like, no, no. He said it himself. I'm not. I'm going to live properly in the mansion. All these bad movies. It was just like, yeah, no. It came from his mouth. That ain't his agent. And then he's unretiring to do the sequel to the Vin Diesel classic.
[00:20:20] The last Witch Hunter. Oh, my God. That was already out. Which is incredible. Are you for real? No, I'm being so for real. Oh, my God. That came out like 10 years ago. Wow. And they're making a sequel. And Michael Caine is surprising. It is. Whoa. He said the only person he would come out of retirement for is his friend, Vin Diesel.
[00:20:49] Oh, now he's got to be a friend. You know why, man? He feels like a troll. Because it's all about family. No. Wow. That's why. No. No. So are you saying that Vin Diesel should get all these other people from other franchises? And she gets alone. And do the expendables of the modern day of like Jason Statham. The expendables. I mean, it pretty much is the Fast and Furious. Right. But it's so weird, though. Like, I see a rivalry between those guys.
[00:21:19] Like, I see people who hate Taken but like expendables and vice versa. I see people who love Fast and Furious, hate expendables. Even though, like you say, there's variations on all the different formulas. And so I think it just depends on the excess and how much you're willing to go to. But that would be historical. Kingsman was kind of making fun of all that stuff. It was. Cheap spy movie. So, yeah, it'd be funny. Vin Diesel. Michael Caine. Stallone. Sandy B. And then she should have a rap career under that name.
[00:21:48] Sandy B in the house. I don't know. Don't do that. That'd be bad. Do not do that. That'd be bad. But, yeah. So, wow. Wow. I did not know this. These headlines are so funny, bro. Well, so then we got to get. We got to have someone else in there. Is Kevin Hart in the Rock need a mansion built? Oh, God. Kevin Hart. Can we keep him out of this? Then we got to have Vin Diesel die in frame number one. That'd be funny. No one expects that. We'll pull a scream on you. Vin Diesel dies. What are we going to replace him with?
[00:22:18] You're funny because he would not allow you to do that. Well, that's just it. We'll film the movie. Then when it's supposedly in the can, we'll re-cut it before opening day. I'll see you in court. Is what he'll say. He's not Steven Seagal. He's fine. We're good. He's not Steven Seagal. Well, I just think Seagal has more lawyers somehow. The difference being, I actually believe Vin Diesel could heat me up, but I don't believe Steven Seagal could.
[00:22:49] I don't fear either because Vin's more likely to just get drunk and say, fuck you. But I do still fear Dolph Lundgren. Dolph Lundgren is scary, bro. Sandra Bullock and Dolph. So then Harrison Ford has to show up as the police chief saying, I don't care. That'd be amazing. Give me a fuck, can't you? They would probably, they're probably going to remake Speed, huh? If they do that, then I will swear.
[00:23:20] Hollywood. What? I'm not even joking, man. I feel it in my gut. I just feel it. I feel like we'll do it. That'll happen when they remake Back to the Future and after they've remade Die Hard for Netflix with Kevin Hart. Oh, God. Oh, wait, they already did that. They did that. They did that. With freaking Skyscrapers. It's called Die Hard. Right? So that's my point. He's done the parody and The Rock did the parody called Skyscraper. Die Hard. Oh, God.
[00:23:48] So that'll happen when they do a sequel to that Crow remake. Ha, ha, ha, ha. Ha, ha. I see in 2024, instead of rebooting it, they want to bring back Keanu and Sandra and do Speed 3. Now that I would see, but see, don't call it Speed Free. So I had an idea. I mean, yeah, they would probably be, they'd probably call it Speed. If you want to bring Jason Patrick in some capacity, I'm cool, but just don't have any, you know. And they have a threesome in it.
[00:24:18] Well, and, you know, if there's some sex in Speed Free, that would speed up everyone's heart. That's okay. Yeah. Mm-hmm. That'd be hysterical, though. You know what? We don't speak enough about how Speed was the blueprint. But Crank and Crank 2 High Voltage were the improvements. That was insane. Those movies are crazy. Oh, my God.
[00:24:45] If they do another Crank, it'll go the way of the canceled Universal. I don't think it's even possible to make another Crank. Well, because... That time has passed. Statham's gotten expensive now, and those creators... Statham's gotten expensive. He's doing other jobs now. And those creators seem to want to do way worse movies like Ghost Rider 2 and Gamer. So, they got cheaper with their equipment. That's crazy.
[00:25:10] I cannot do that shaking camcorder look where it's just junky looking. I'm like, light the scene before you film this damn thing. Oh, God. And, yeah. So, realistically, Sandy V will never do a Miss Congeniality. But her co-star, Heather Burns, said she's teased an idea. So, yeah.
[00:25:35] If Practical Magic 2 is a hit, then Sandy V will pull a Stallone, Eddie Murphy, and say I'll do part free. Again, I'm not saying it has to be good, but it can be at least decent. Like, look at Bill and Ted face the music. That was fun. That was fun. Most people forget it or didn't see it. Oh, Naked Gun rehash was awesome. Naked Gun was good. It's so funny. People kept saying remake. I'm like, it's a reboot and a sequel. And it's a parody. It's a legacy sequel, honestly. Right? Yeah. But it's a parody of a parody.
[00:26:03] That's already winning formula. And I saw so many. They're like, it's not better than the first. I'm like, it wasn't trying to be. It wasn't trying to be at all. You can't outdo Leslie Nielsen. You can't. But that was brilliant. Yeah, I appreciate that they tried their own thing. The same formula. They kind of understood, like, oh, we cannot just do the same old. Old, because that's the OG. You can't eat that. So if anything, take those filmmakers. Make this congenial free.
[00:26:32] Then do a legit good comedy with Jackie Chan. That's not the tuxedo. Yeah. They are doing Rush Hour 4 with Brett Ratner. I cannot believe that. Back in the directing seat. Even though people have said we will not see it because the director is a shitbag and he's not a good director. It's like, wow. You just wait till this Paramount Warner Brothers merger happens. You'll see all sorts of shitbags back up.
[00:27:01] It's so weird, though, too. It's just like, why even cancel anyone? Why even have any law if you're just going to slap people on the wrist? It's kind of like how they've never, ever figured out rock stars or rap music is like, we're going to reward you for misbehaving. You just don't slap too many prostitutes or gamblers up the wrong way. You're like, what? What are you telling people? So, you know, I well, so there you go. Jackie Chan and Sonderbach. That would be fun.
[00:27:32] That would be fun. So who else is your Dreamcast? I'm sorry, guys. We're going into Dreamcast because, like, that's just all we got. Like, once you see these movies, you'll have a shitty grin on your face saying that's both stupid and kind of fun. That's all you got with these kinds of movies. But I they still keep teasing Lethal Weapon 5. I'm like, oh, please, no. How would they even do that? It's like part four was a perfect wrap up.
[00:28:00] I feel like that would be impossible because you can't even. Joe Pesci wouldn't do it. Renee Rousseau has done so much. She's so expensive now. Yeah. Way too old. We're going to get him out of retirement for this. And it's directing it. And I don't trust him to do that after doing all these crazy, you know, historical epics. He's doing the Christ films. Right. So it's like I did not like some of his other war movies. I don't think he's going to do that because I feel like he's taken.
[00:28:30] Oh, he said it. He found God. So. Right. But that's what's so funny is like, I think God is just a cover for him where he just does the whole I can do whatever, but I can still blow people up. If I just don't like him. I'm like, well, but so that's just it. Like, even if you had Joel Silver back, you know, it worked because Richard Donner knew how to give everyone their screen time. And he would call Murtaugh slur. We can't let him make this. No, no. We can't let him make this movie.
[00:28:57] Well, that was the Shane Black dialogue was crackling in the first two movies. And he meant for Riggs the Dying movie, too. It's like that would have been a fun route. Which is like kind of probably should have died at the end of the series, at least. Totally. And either that or him and Murtaugh say, you know, let's just set off the bomb and save everybody. Yep. They just go. Go on. And instead is like we got endless rip offs and just reminding us how better the first two movies is like you can watch part three at four, but they're not.
[00:29:25] At that point, it's too old for this shit. Right. But it's both fun and has a lot of shit that doesn't work in it. So it's like, yeah, it's like if anything, they could have crossed it over with 48 hours. That would have been hysterical. But I don't know. I don't know. Maybe I could see Eddie Murphy's bitch slapping Riggs and Murtaugh, you know, not putting up with Nick Nolte shit anymore. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Call me that. Yeah, he would have called him the N word and then he would have said, you can't call me that.
[00:29:55] And then they would have got into a small little fight and then they would have been friends. Heads or tails. Incredible. Oh, man. Incredible. Incredible. So coming. So, yes, I have hopes for Demolition Man 2 as long as they keep Stallone's ego in check. Yeah.
[00:30:22] Obviously, it's not the same level as Rocky, but I do enjoy watching that movie every time it's on TV. Preferably uncut. I kid. Don't watch it on TV. Are you kidding? Yeah, you cannot watch it on TV, man. It was terrible. It was like they just find him for darn. That's not a curse word. Darn. That's very funny. No, we saw the uncut version. It's very. Oh, it's amazing. Very. A lot of swears. Oh, it's fucking amazing.
[00:30:51] My ears were bleeding. My I was like, oh, my God. My. I got to confess my sins. Oh, my God. Lord, I have sinned for. I enjoy. For I enjoy the top movies wearing. And as he is like markers than South Park. He's like on some fucking cocaine or something because he's jacked up on this movie, bro. He's so hyper. Indeed. Indeed.
[00:31:20] It'd be funny if Wesley Snipes came back for Undisputed 5 and got to fight Michael J. White. We were never the same person. Imagine if he came back for Demolition Man 2 as a cyborg Simon Phoenix. I think they're doing something like that. They're going to resurrect him. Oh, my God. This is too much on the nose. Wait, Mame. This is going to be incredible. Hello. Can we direct this? I don't want to direct it with you. Oh, my God. So Stallone is confirmed.
[00:31:48] Saw him posing with Snipes, but nothing locked in yet. We'll see. I'm sure they're discussing. They're negotiating. They're going to talk. We're going to direct it. We're going to direct. Yeah. You heard it here first. Exclusive. Exclusive to the podcast. Plus, it's the same writer. Peter Linkov has been remaking every classic 70s show into cheesy today's cop shows. Like he did that bad version of the new Magnum PI.
[00:32:18] That fun. Oh, yeah. But formulaic Hawaii Five-0. Hawaii Five-0. He's a long way. But at the same time, he did. He was part of the writing staff for both La Femme Nikita and 24. So in the right ways, he does. I guess he has it. Some stuff, but he also has formulaic. Some semblance of comics. He's also a comic book writer. And he swears by RIPD. He's like, well, they adapted your comic book, but it wasn't great. Oh, that's his comic book? Yeah. So I'm like, I mean, they adapted it. She just stayed a comic.
[00:32:46] It wasn't Men in Black. It tried. So that would be funny, though. Sandra Bullock cut reboots Men in Black with Will Smith. Don't do it. That'd be funny, though. Please don't do it. But is there any franchise she should take over? Because The Rock was doing that for a while, and that wasn't landing him anywhere. But she could probably carry something. I don't know. I have no idea. Oh, my God.
[00:33:13] The writer of Demolition Man also did uncredited rewrites for Ballistic X vs. Ever. Yes, he did. Yeah. He saved that movie from what it was already. Redirected it. Reshot it. Yep. And he's done some bad Pauly Shore movies, but seems like a nice guy. He's done some better stuff. But he used to do this one syndicated show that starred Highlander star Adrian Paul, which
[00:33:42] was okay, but basically an X-Men clone. It was like, yeah. Oh, my God. I just remembered they're doing a Highlander movie again. Stahelski's doing it. I will not enjoy it. The Ghost of Queen is going to do the soundtrack. I think I might like it, man. The only thing that it won't have is the Queen soundtrack, which is like, come on now. See? Oh, I look at it this way. As a fan of that franchise, it doesn't need to be rewraged. Oh, that's for sure. But it's Hollywood.
[00:34:12] It's going to happen regardless. Well, I won't be supporting it. That's fine. And plus, Henry Cavill's not an actor. Dude, I just remembered it's Henry Cavill, man. Oh, my God. I like Bautista. And don't get me wrong. I'm a Bautista fan. I love Bautista. But they keep casting him in bad movies. Henry Cavill is not. Yeah, you're right. He's not an actor. He's flat. The crazy thing is that. Well, I don't want to say it, actually. Never mind. No. Oh, gents.

Hi, I'm James Gavsey, and on the Who Would Win show, me and my co-host Ray ignore anything important happening in the outside world and debate fictional battles between characters from comics, movies, and video games. We got a new show every week, and almost always am I the winner. Yeah, not true, Ray. In the past, we've discussed such matches as Captain America vs. Darth Vader, Solid Snake vs. the Iron Giant, classic matchups like Robocop vs. Terminator,
[00:37:05] and even the Muppets vs. Sesame Street. That one was crazy. So if you're a fan of geek culture and love a spirited debate, check out the Who Would Win show wherever you get your podcasts, or check us out at whowouldwinshow.com.
