Hostage Takeover Week Minisode: COBRA TV Show Seasons 1 & 2 Review

COBRA is the newest British answers to political mayhem & disaster action on the small screen that airs on Sky One and PBS and stars Robert Caryle (The Full Monty, 28 Weeks Later) and Victoria Hamilton (Mansfield Park, The Crown).

What does it have that The West Wing and 24 didn't?

Outside of all the power outages and computer hacking, what makes the disasters stand out?

How does show creator Ben Richards (MI-5, Outcasts) handle all the chaos gracefully?

Find out in this engaging minisode!

[00:00:10] Prime Minister, we've got a really serious situation.

[00:00:13] The high-speed plasma eruption is heading straight for us.

[00:00:16] The storm will certainly cause huge damage.

[00:00:19] Some areas could be without power for months.

[00:00:21] All the navigational systems are out.

[00:00:23] This is now a national emergency.

[00:00:25] We're the ones who have to make the decisions.

[00:00:27] People are dying because of your government.

[00:00:30] This country's on the brink.

[00:00:32] I made a promise to the people and I'm gonna keep that promise.

[00:00:35] COBRA, Sunday October 4th at 10-9 Central, only on PBS.

[00:00:48] Welcome all, welcome all.

[00:01:28] No shortage of just awesome, just cult cinema in TV shows.

[00:01:38] And in this case, we decided to take up a more recent show.

[00:01:41] It's kind of been called The Answer to 24, but in Britain it is called Cobra.

[00:01:49] In relation to Cobra Kai, in relation to the still-off movie, yeah, Cobra.

[00:01:53] Standing for, again, the cabinet office briefing room.

[00:01:57] The show was created by a bunch of great filmmakers.

[00:02:02] It is Ben Richards, who is best known for his work on Spooks, which you might know as MI5 in the US, as well as The Tunnel.

[00:02:09] In a Virgin Media interview, he noted he was like, he was trying to tie politics to an exciting story.

[00:02:16] What made it very disconcerting to learn that a solar storm is a real possibility.

[00:02:20] So he pretty much just took every other disaster thing you could think of.

[00:02:25] The reviews were mixed.

[00:02:27] A lot of the UK guys were really hard on it, just not buying the implausible scenarios or how the public would react.

[00:02:34] Well, that's on you. You know, I can suspend belief.

[00:02:37] And as a conservative president with a very liberal staff and a bunch of other just assholes trying to undermine them for their own political gain,

[00:02:45] it's going to entertain for most people, especially if you're looking for some other just lighter tech-savvy type terrorism mixed in with the usual West Wing, Air Force One type, you know, chats.

[00:03:00] And the cast all delivers. You love how, you know, they've said on the record they love playing these, you know, characters who have a real gray area.

[00:03:11] Like the prime minister is not ready to deal with his dysfunctional family and their mental health problems.

[00:03:17] The chief of staff is really not liking how everyone's ignoring her advice.

[00:03:23] And again, the home secretary is a piece of shit, just a real worm, just looking to just undermine everybody and then take all the credit for their ideas and find a way to run.

[00:03:34] And you're just, you want him to fill at every point in the thing.

[00:03:39] It's been on and off again. The other guys playing the scientists and other people speaking on it are really terrific.

[00:03:47] I love how it's an electrical storm that causes a plasma geometrical eruption in the first one and start to deal with a blackout.

[00:03:56] And then season two, they're having to deal with the computer hacking. Season three is not long, it's far away.

[00:04:02] But yeah, I think the show has about five more years left in it. I love, you know, not sometimes even by eight episodes, it can feel a little over long at times, but it never dragged and never made me say, fuck it.

[00:04:17] They're out of ideas or they got too clever for their own good.

[00:04:21] No, they knew exactly what they're making with this. And this is recommended for all those other people looking for some cool political thrillers mixed in with disaster movie tropes that.

[00:04:32] Don't have explosions every minute, but still have a cool like, you know, we've done where we're free to death and we've done plenty of other just political tensions.

[00:04:42] And I like how this brings into questions. It's like, could you trust your government to do a competent Passover and keep people safe without breaking the law or doing it for their own personal monetary gain?

[00:04:58] You know, so this was just cool to just see a commentary on this. And I, you know, people can complain about how they do or don't buy this in a British setting.

[00:05:08] I find it way more interesting in this British setting because I feel like the U.S. always just caters to, you know, the U.S. would focus then on just what is social media thing?

[00:05:19] What is, you know, let's take a vote on this or that. It was like, no, this is a time of crisis. We're not fighting a war. We're fighting a survival here.

[00:05:28] And we got to keep the power grid on and plenty of other stuff. Like they talk about protests and riots in the street and other stuff.

[00:05:36] And I like how it doesn't shy away from some uncomfortable topics. And I also like how it knows when to move on to the next topic without feeling like, whoa, whoa, whoa.

[00:05:46] You set up too much stuff. Why don't you revisit that or close it out before moving on to the next thing?

[00:05:51] No, it's it doesn't introduce too much stuff before without while making you think, hey, that was that was a rush hack job.

[00:05:59] No, it's it's pretty even overall. And even the characters who last like two to three episodes are interesting, too.

[00:06:06] And they're often civilians or other survivors or protesters or scientists and that they leave their mark as well.

[00:06:14] So very recommended Cobra. It's a passing grade for us.

[00:06:19] We'll return after these messages.
