Gillian Anderson in The Fall TV Show Review Minisode

For another post-X-Files show, I cover Gillian Anderson's other addiction mystery series THE FALL:

Why did some viewers have issues with the ending?

How is the serial killer, police solving & office politics realized way differently here?

And why will that atmospheric soundtrack get stuck in your head?

[00:00:10] I'm brought in by the Metropolitan Police to lead a review into the investigation of the murder of Alice Munro. We've had our share of murderers in Belfast, but never anything like this. I love you. Love you, Daddy. No one here has the experience she has.

[00:00:39] Welcome to Belfast. The killer is out there somewhere, and we have nothing at all. Two professional women killed in their own homes by strangulation. You make sure nobody gets in the house. Keep those people back, okay? She has a high level of chorionic gonadotropin and blood. I'm thinking she was pregnant. If we don't stop him, he will kill again. You look tired. Did you have a busy night? Quite busy, yeah. It's about power and control.

[00:01:09] Do you have any idea of the effects you have on men? It thrills him to stalk these women. Haven't you heard? There's a strangler in the prod. To break into their home. What could be more intimate than squeezing the life from another human being?

[00:01:59] Me lorded. Sometimes we get so deep into conversation that we have separate segments worthy of their own place in the sun. Reshuffled mini-episode.

[00:02:21] Right, all. So we're gonna jump into the thick of it. We're talking about the one, the only excellent TV show. The Fall. That's right. I'm telling you about. Just excellent show for this X-Files themed week.

[00:02:52] Not week. It's more than a week. It's an X-Files themed month all October. We're doing anything related to any of that cast and crew. This is an excellent film. There's so many different British productions that will just blow your mind. This is produced by BBC Northern Ireland. Aired on BBC2. And I kid you not. This was one of those. This was way overdue. I meant to watch it. And it just.

[00:03:22] And it ran for free seasons. 17 episodes. Created by Alan Cubitt. Who's had a lot of great stuff. He wrote the second season of The Very Similar Prime Suspect. That Helen Mirren show. And yeah, he's the main creator and co-writer behind this. You know, he did the Anna Karina 2000 miniseries. St. Ives. But he's mainly known for crafting Murphy's Law.

[00:03:49] As well as the Clive Owen film The Boys Are Back. And more recent shows like Death and Nightmares. Yeah, I cannot fault this at all. You look at all the other stuff he's done. Plenty of other BBC telefilms and PBS miniseries. But. One of the absolute best shows of the late 2010s. And it was one of those. It was everywhere. First had a big hit. On Netflix. I think around 2018, 2019.

[00:04:19] I saw people talking about it. I'm like, cool. I'll get on it. And then. You know, it goes from there. It goes on to Prime. Then it moves finally to 2B. Where I saw it recently. It's just about everywhere. Free you can watch it. There's no reason not to see it. It. I was reluctant. Because. I've since come around on Jamie Dornan. He was one of those. I'm like. You know. I saw him in the worst movie. That also made his career. And that was. You know. The garbage. Erotic. You know.

[00:04:49] The 50 Shades of Grey trilogy. And I was like. God. That dude had no charisma at all. But then I see him in. My dinner with. You know. Harvey. You know. Fantasy Island making up. And he was good there. And so. I. I've come around on him. When I've seen him. He's gone into more filler. Horror. Mystery. And. All kinds of other stuff. He's definitely not a pretty face.

[00:05:17] I know he was also known for. The Once Upon a Time show. That show was garbage. So I. I can't say whether he was good on it or not. You know. He was in some bad stuff. Like the siege in Jadadsville. But. I'm going to let it go. He's clearly made. A big. Big. Big deal. On. You know. He's doing a folk band. He's. Done all kinds of other stuff. Like. You know. I haven't cared for everything. I mean. It was Belfast. The tourist show. But. Yeah. He's. He's.

[00:05:47] He's had some turds on his list. Like burnt. But. There's. There's. Plenty of other well intended stuff. Like synchronic. Oh. Just. A private war. Yeah. I've come around on him. If he's in a bad movie. It's not because he's bad. Was he bad in Fifty Shades of Grey? Yes. It was beneath everything. But. You should see him in my dinner with Harvey. And. In this show. And you'll just be blown away. You're like. Yeah. Wow. What a. Unusual character actor. He. So.

[00:06:17] Every good story needs a good villain. And you need a good hero. And it's like. Yeah. We got the main senior. Investigated officer. Stella Gibson. Played by Gillian Anderson. It's so awesome. Seeing her speak in her native tongue. What keeps it from being a retread of. Dana Scully from the X-Files. Is that. She's not only good at. At being more reserved. And. Doing all the cat and mouse stuff. But. To avoid being as cliche. As say. A CSI or Criminal Minds type show. It goes a step further. Like it'll show.

[00:06:48] The graphic dialogue. They imply the sexuality. And violence. But. Never. Exploit it. Or go too far with it. And. It helps that the creator directed some of the episodes. It's definitely a passionate. You know. You don't feel like there's too many. You feel like it's a very organized. Process. And. I mean. I thought it was brilliant. It's like. Let's have this serial killer. Who's you know. Messing with. Everybody. These teenagers. Cheating on his wife. Then.

[00:07:18] Having to avoid the wrath of these mobsters. Who come after him. Because he's you know. Messing with their women. And they're. The irony is. They're abusers. So he's always using their own words. And sins against them. But. Yeah. Everybody's given a voice. Even his wife. Who's just like. I don't know what happened. You know. He seems so normal when I met him. You know. It's just. She's validated without feeling like a plot device. And everybody is. I. But yeah. It was so brilliant. It's like.

[00:07:48] Let's have the bad guy. But he's going to be. A marriage therapist. A marriage counselor. And that's why he. Digs up all this personal info about people. And he does the whole. I'm. You know. I'm saving people. And. Like all these. Serial killers. He takes. Zero accountability for his actions. He's like. It's going to happen. I don't know what's. Why. Why I do it anymore. It's just. I do it. And. To avoid seeming like a chicken shit. You know. There's just so much. Just. Good surroundings.

[00:08:17] The foley outside is neat. There's a few occasional shootouts. And. The mystery is always blazing. Like. And. But. I. Again. The. To avoid seeming like just another cop show. Like. I. I love how they show how not everyone's. A hundred percent. It's very. Much. Just as good as. You know. It's going to. For people who like American stuff. It'll get your. It'll check off all the brutal boxes you like. On all the other brutal shows. Like. The shield.

[00:08:47] The wire. 24. I am not making that up. Even those who are like. Oh. There's nothing better than that. I'm like. I didn't say that. But. It's on your level. You're going to. Most likely like it. You know. If you like the other British show. Line of Duty. Same kind of deal. Well. That's an anthology. With some of the same people. Recurring. Investigating corruption. It's really awesome here. How. Like. Gibson is just awesome. Like. Just the character. Is just so well defined. What makes her different from. You know. Helen Mirren's. You know. Character. Character on Prime Suspect.

[00:09:17] Was. You know. She had to. You know. Get past sexism and everything. Whilst. You know. Gibson is like. I got no skeletons in my closet. I once slept with a married man. Years ago. But. He chose to do that. I didn't send the invite. No one else knows that about me. You know. Her. She is the. Just confident person. Like. She goes home. Drinks. And then cries. This off. And they do it just so realistically. There's other times where she's like. Not done with this right now. Absolutely. No one call me unless you got information.

[00:09:46] I don't want to hear it. It's so funny. They have that one. A few different other patrol officers. Who help her out. You know. And. It's so funny. They'll just share random info. Because they kind of imply that she's kind of. They insert a little bit of. Jillian Anderson's real life. You know. I'm bisexual. But. It's just so funny. Like. Jillian is so good at just having a good poker face. Like. One officer comes up to her and is like. Oh yeah. By the way. I'm. I'm gay if you're available. And she's like. That's nice.

[00:10:17] Absolutely zero interest. Just like. Just. I'm going to keep this professional. I'm your boss. I'm not here to sleep with all my cadets. You know. Just because you guys want to blow off some steam. And her main. Inspector. Her main chief. He is so unprofessional. And. He's so worried about the press. And everything. And all the other scandals in the department. She's like. Well. Then we're going to find other evidence. We're going. We're going into overtime boys. We're going to. We're going to. Nab this in the gut. And. The surveillance.

[00:10:46] The SWAT team stuff. That's all good. All nice. Plenty of other drug dealers. Who are connected to all this. Even when you know. Something bad is going to happen. Still just keeps you invested. Just because there's other. Just stuff to it. It's like. I wonder what's going to happen to that person. That person. And you know. Like every good British show. It's. Each of them are about six to eight episodes. So. It went by fast. I went through like. All three seasons. In like. Three weeks. I. I've been just a bunch of it over. My weekends. Before work. And it was worth it.

[00:11:16] And we're in Ireland. You know. Especially you know. It's set in Belfast. That scenery is great. But it's. As much a character in this show. It's very well portrayed. And Julie Anderson was one of the producers on it. Like she. Is definitely a career best. This would be in her top ten roles. No problem. It's not always actiony. But there is some. You know. Gun drawing and arrests. And fights. And. Season three is pretty much all about. Hey. You know. Our main bad apple. He's finally caught. But now.

[00:11:46] We got to make an example. We got to. It should. I love how they show all the pretentious. You know. Defense. Criminal lawyers. And how they're going to try. And make an example out of Gibson. And her department. And. You know. Just like. It echoes a lot of the politics in the U.S. Where it's like. Really? That's your best defense? You're just. Not even taking any accountability. For the bad guy. And his actions. You're just acting like. We made a bad arrest. Even though all this evidence is here. And. Stella is just awesome. Because like. She's just. The bigger gal.

[00:12:16] I saw some people. Who didn't care for. How it ended. I'm just going to say. They're fucking high. They are absolutely high as a kite. This ended exactly how the creators started. It. Wasn't a cop out. No pun. It was not. Overthinking it. In no way or shape or form. Does it try to pull a Sopranos. Or Game of Thrones level. You know. Or even. Even an M. Night Shyamalan type plot twist. Where you're like. That is fucking ridiculous. That doesn't add up.

[00:12:46] Nowhere in the realm of a bad Twilight Zone. Or doing something. I mean. There's plenty of shows that had good endings. But aren't always popular. Like The Wire. What have you. I'd rank it up there with The Shield. They knew what they were doing. And how they wanted to. Outline this from the start. Yeah. I dig it. Completely. And just. The fast paced chases. Will just enthrall you. It's. It's a winner. Winner. Winner. Chicken dinner. Check it out.

[00:13:20] That'd be Detective Superintendent Gibson. Yes ma'am. And that would be me. I've been brought in from the Metropolitan Police. To lead a review into the investigation. Of the murder of Alice Monroe. We have nothing Stella. The killer is out there somewhere. We have nothing at all. The killer tightened and loosened his grip.

[00:13:50] Around her throat. Over a period of 45 minutes to an hour. Daddy. You have fantasized about having a woman. Completely under their control. I've been watching you with interest. You have no idea who I am. And you never will.

[00:14:21] Examining dead bodies is one thing. Living victims of. It's something else. I think he feels that pain acutely. It's just that he gets pleasure from it. We'll return after these messages.
