Favorite Wishmaster Movie Moments

We do an epically amusingly gory recollection of why the WISHMASTER franchise spawned a bunch of fandom.

What makes the Djinn such a fun villain to follow around?

What's the single most embarrassing moment from the infamous last two films?

And why the genre actor cameos, rule breaking and visual gags keep viewers glued!

Our Guests Include:

Ken Sledge (Sledgehammer Horror),

Nick Bauer (Bad Movies We Luv),

Mondo (I Luv the Films on Insta),

Jim Evans (Film Rage Podcast)

& Matthew Skelly

Ken also notes how his folks used to own a local videostore rental place called Downtown Video and how movies like this were ripe for rediscovery in the home video era!

[00:00:00] This podcast is a production of Unfiltered Studios. If you would like to know more about joining Unfiltered Studios, please visit our website at unfpod.com for more information. I've waited 10 years for this piece. Found the jewel inside a statue of Ahura Mazda. There's something inside of it?

[00:00:33] Ask me for something. How about a million dollars? I have to get inside. You have to go through me, and that is something I would love to see.

[00:00:50] By true faith, make your wish fulfill the prophecy. Three wishes granted to the one who woke him. Let's him open the gateway between the worlds.

[00:01:09] Nothing else you desire. Frogs and locusts!

[00:02:34] I couldn't be the only stooge to talk about a beloved cult movie franchise. When we revisit stuff, now that we've done the review, now we're going to talk about the stuff that matters. The moments that linger in our head. The stuff that gave us nightmares. Not so much the case here, but in this case, gave us guffaws. We got returning and new guests. Oh my goodness. It's been a minute. We were talking about it for a while, and finally, it's a reality. We made our wish. It was Jim Evans from Film Rage. Part of the trio.

[00:03:02] He has decided he'd like to talk about what wishes he would make. Welcome. Oh man, my wishes. Damn, that's tough. So, the first wish I would have wished for is that he wasn't eternal. And then, the second wish I would have said was, why don't you just fucking blow up? There you go. Strive away his immortality in the third. But then you don't get the third one. So, you gotta be careful with the second one. You gotta stay in a way where he can't misinterpret it.

[00:03:32] You can't transform it into a... Yeah, you're gonna say you wish he would blow up, but he's gonna turn into Eminem. Right, he can't transform it into an eggplant or anything. He's like, no. That might be the more interesting discussion. Okay, what are our wishes, and how would he have twisted it? Exactly. Yes. Trust me, we're gonna divide it up a bunch. So, we got Mondo from I Love the Films on Insta. Hey, what's going on? Thank you. Roll Tide.

[00:03:57] We got Facebook movie geek Matthew Skelly is back in the show. Now that I've got a proper mic on here. All right. Nick Bauer from Bad Movies We Love. Yes, sir. It's a partial crossover here. I'm digging the Netflix hat here. Oh, but this is... I know, everybody thought it was Nebraska for a long time, but it's not Netflix either. What? It looks like a Netflix hat. Then, at this point, it should be in for... Nope. Nope. Nope. What's the stand?

[00:04:28] It's Northridge. Northridge! That should be the name of my next metal band. I've never had a metal band as a disclaimer. Make my wish for a band. So, we got Ken Sledge from Sledgehammer Horror. This has been a long time coming, too. Once again, we were back and forth. We were like, God, all these crazy, gory topics for you. And schedules were a bitch. But now, finally, we broke on through to the other side. Very excited, man. There's always kinds of movies that everyone has a weird connection to.

[00:04:56] Last year, my year was made because I was able to talk to the djinn himself. He's very fan-friendly. I had 20 minutes to talk with him over the phone. Andrew Deboff has made his own djinn brew, even, to commemorate the success of these. And so, we'll split it up. We'll talk about our favorite moments. First off, once again, guys, thanks for being here. It's always fun to do a roundtable. Last time, we had a really stacked one.

[00:05:23] It was on both the Star Trek franchise as well as the Freddy and Jason one. And that was funny because that was our first actual franchise face-off. And it was so close. We had to actually flip a coin. We could not decide. Because we had... It was more than just... We were equating it up. Like, who had the better movies? And who had the better remake? Who had the better show? And it was still split. No one could make up their mind.

[00:05:49] So, but here, in this case, when it's just moments, we're pretty much just off the top of our heads. Like, oh, I remember this scene. It's so funny. And to prep for this, I'll leave you with a quote. I was in a hole once for 3,000 years. This should be a breeze. I'll examine you. Nick, it was a blessing being on your show. I love all the unusual movies you've been taking on. Everything from Michael Crichton to college comedies.

[00:06:16] Where does the Evil Genie and the Wishmaster films rank for you in terms of horror films? Honestly, probably fairly low. But it's a movie that I saw in, you know, my adolescence. So I still have a soft spot for it. Obviously, we covered it on Bad Movies We Love for a reason. I appreciate you taking the time to do that with me.

[00:06:41] And we had a great time talking about it because I think the movie is rich in a lot of its horror DNA. Even though maybe it never rose to the heights of some of its familiars in that category. Matt, how about yourself? What made you say, I'll make time for these outrageous movies? You know, this one, I love everybody who's in it. Oh, sweet.

[00:07:10] It's overflowing with horror talent. But the thing is, we get these kind of movies all the time now. So now we get the movie that's basically your local horror convention roster all showing up in the same film. This is before that era. I mean, before they were such a big thing. Before you were seeing these people all the time.

[00:07:36] I was joking with Nick the other day on how it's like now it's kind of second nature. Like you start, it often comes in the form of a monster movie, something like Lake Placid or Cocaine Bear. Prior to this, I was also joking that the producer of this saga had worked on the dentist movies among other USA Network and Lifetime and HBO. So, you know, horror mysteries. And it's the Blink and the Abyssic people too. It's like one of the guys from Evil Dead 2. Not Teddy.

[00:08:07] Reliable Jake. Yeah. He's in the background there. Buckflower. It's Buckflower in there. And it's Angus Grimm doing the narration. So it makes me wonder, is this part of the Phantasm universe? Should it have been? Oh, I see. I don't know about the Phantasm universe, but there's got to be a Reggie Bannister universe. Oh, there you go. Where this pharmacist. It's all in his head. Yeah.

[00:08:35] Where this pharmacist gives it up and then gets a job at a nursing home. And Sex Machine himself, Tom Savini is one of the medics saying, well, what's wrong? What's wrong? Don't die. But it's also just wild to how the gal who's turned into a mannequin, you look up her credits and she was doing all the anthology shows and Walter Hill movies. What's her name? The lead star. Tammy Lorne. Yeah.

[00:09:04] Tammy Lorne as Alexandra. You know, she kind of had a Linda Hamilton kind of feel. She's just going around. DeWall's stone factory. Well, she's going around. She does. And if you look at interviews with her, this is one of this is like her first real experience with horror. Yes. Her first foray into it. Right. Other than a few 80s TV movies, this was kind of what got her a few other gigs. Then she was on martial law and then just kind of went back to TV guest spots. But I mean, just it.

[00:09:31] It spent so much of its time just on the stuff people wanted to see instead of being divisive and being overthought. Yeah, we're just making a fun movie. Let's make a fun movie. Jim, how about yourself? You love all kinds of movies. What did this great for you? Was this so bad it's good, especially like the later sequels? Or was this like, I don't know what I just watched. I got to rewatch this. Yeah. Well, as you as you may or may not know, we don't normally rewatch stuff unless we're dared to.

[00:10:01] It just doesn't hold up for you. Well, just we're all about new content. So we're our goal is to see as much new content as possible and always in cinema. So when you said, do you want to watch us? Like I saw this when it came out in theaters. So it was like I hadn't seen it since then. And it was actually quite a joy for me to watch it.

[00:10:27] In fact, over the last week, I rewatched it twice just because I was like, yeah, I was I was actually totally digging it because I love practical effects. And it's just it's so much fun. Like when you said, just let's just make a fun movie. This is a fun movie. I mean, there's there's tons of holes in this. But I mean, right. If you're everyone is always dumb enough to answer the question, even after they've told them off. So, yeah, I know.

[00:10:55] But my biggest my only major complaint about it was his attack on Tony Todd because it didn't make sense because he basically says, you know, you want to escape. Escape well to this. Yeah. Well, but then if he grants his wish, he would escape. He wouldn't try to escape. He would escape. I figured he would isolate him somewhere else, like the middle of L.A. traffic. Yeah.

[00:11:25] My only issue is what does he do? Like, can he actually fight or is he not feared by that, even though since he's immortal and he's just always so. I mean, that's kind of why I liked parts of part two better, just because he's in the prison and the guards have had it up to here with them. And all the prisoners are just about to always shank him. And he's always just a smooth talker to where they're like, this guy doesn't get it. OK, you want to make a deal? Let's make a deal.

[00:11:51] Sledge, out of all the genre movies you have tackled, how did you come upon these Lionsgate B movies? I actually my mom and dad owned a mom and pop video store growing up called Downtown Video. Whoa. Yeah, this is one that we caught. You know, I saw the VHS cover that was YouTube back in the day was walking up and down the aisles looking at the cover art, trying to figure out what movie you were going to rent. And this just caught my eye one day. We took it home and watched it.

[00:12:21] And I was so young, I didn't even realize that it was like Kane Hodder, Tony Todd, Robert. It didn't sink into me. Nick made a good call. He noticed what other people had noticed that and Kane's cameo as the security guard. His badge actually reads as Jay Voorhees. Oh, that's awesome. So did the Wishmaster kill and damn Jason or was that just, you know, I don't know.

[00:12:47] Like I said, it's when you watch this and you see those guys now, you know, obviously we know they're icons. But yeah, unfortunately, I lost two of them, unfortunately. But yeah, you go back and watch it now and you see that. But as a kid, nothing. The only thing that really stuck with me was the kills as a kid. A lot of the other shit was going over my head. You know what I mean? It's so weird. Nick and I joked out. Had Raimi's kill. You know, he was like, dang. Easily avoidable. He's just very bad at operating the CDL.

[00:13:17] Should have just had a CDL license rejected. Don't open that up. How many of you took how many rewatches did it take to realize the Pazuzu statue from the Exorcist is in the background? Yeah, it was one of those much like the Robin Williams is evil. Well, it just goes by so fast. I always miss it. Unless I do for this movie recently. And oh, we watch. Ashley picked it up pretty quick. She was like Pazuzu. And I was like, yeah, well, part of the Exorcist cinematic universe. Perfect. Perfect.

[00:13:52] So I'm sorry. I can't speak. We were looking at the trailer and we noticed THX did the sound effects. And we were wondering maybe that misled people. Because at the end when the credits are coming up, it almost makes a lightsaber borderline sound effect. And so we were wondering, did that mislead people? And then they were going to watch some spectacle or something. I don't know. I can say they watch a spectacle. Yeah, it's a different kind of gory spectacle.

[00:14:18] He's got a Lord of the Rings style army at the end with all those animated statues. Yeah. Animating the inanimate. Yeah, man. So would you consider the first one the best? Or do you like the second one despite being a lower budget? I think the first one is the best personally. Okay. No, that's awesome. I don't know. I'm. Yeah.

[00:14:48] This original really got me back into horror because I just couldn't get into the torture stuff. And then I just got into. I just got annoyed by the Shyamalan's trying to do all these Christopher Nolan type endings. It's like, really? That doesn't know. And so I'm kind of glad that we're kind of back into that whole spectacle is like, okay, make it for five to seven million. Have a great. Characterized cast. Have some moody music. And I mean, there's been some fun indies. I personally love the Hell House LLC because that kind of flips the whole.

[00:15:18] That's great stuff. Yeah. But very fun stuff. But it seemed like Wishmaster is like, okay, so this appeases the effects lover in me. But it also I just love the dark humor in it. It. I love seeing how they storyboarded and how it's low budget. I mean, I made my own Wishmaster costume, for God's sakes, by taking a Nosferatu mask and get the Milneficent horns and flipping them upside down. And getting a Jedi robe.

[00:15:47] That was one of these days I might finish it. If I go to more Halloween parties. But it's not going to be anytime soon because that thing is hard to breathe out of. But I did get. I've seen it. I did get red. Oh, yeah, that's right. I did share it. I got I did get red demonic hands and a fake red ruby. So I'm mostly there. But did you get the amazing red contacts?

[00:16:16] No, dude, I wear glasses as it is. I don't want anything in my pupil, but I'll I'll do something. I'll I'll get. Who knows? Maybe I can date a very convincing makeup artist and see where that takes me. But I'm working on it. If I had to list off a wish, number one's got to be. I love how Alexandra in the first one goes, you know, I wish you would kill yourself. And, you know, he takes a gun out, shoots his brains out. It has no impact.

[00:16:46] It's like. That was really foolish of you because I'm immortal. But if it's any consultants. I really hurt like hell. Did you know he got a concussion when he did that stunt? He really did. He did. Yeah. So I watched the restaurant video. That's a great special features. I knew about Dina Mayer. And Kirsten was talking about they tried it first as a practical effect. Squib on the back of the head. It went off.

[00:17:15] My man got a concussion. He had to send him to the hospital. That's what led them to do that. We've got to do this with computers because otherwise it's possible. They even tried to put a squib. I had to wear a squib on my leg for one of the TV shows I was in. And that hurt like a bitch. Oh, can you say what show it is? Yeah, it's called St. Gabriel. It's on Hulu and. Whoa. Right on. Our dude Sledge Axe. Yeah.

[00:17:44] It's also on Tubi. And like the fact that he was willing to know nobody in their right mind should have let him do that. That should have been an instant. Absolutely not. Yeah. We could do a literal leg. And they were like, you know, you're getting shot in the leg. I was like, I'll try to, you know, really put forth the best I can. They're like, trust me, you'll do fine. We can do a true crime. Right. Like we can do a true crime podcast on all these unlawful shootings. Oh, man.

[00:18:13] Like, I just can't believe that they would let him put a squib on the back of his head. Like, that's just. Don't they know what a squib does? Wouldn't the tech guy be like, yeah, don't do that? I've had it. No, they showed like that. They almost burned down the whole set and the fire marshal was there when it happened. The bonus features on that Vestron set are fantastic. I recommend that set. Looks like I will also not be spending this money. Yeah. Yeah. It's great. I mean, it is hard to believe that they.

[00:18:43] It's hard to tell the story. You know, it's like, wow, dude, are you admitting to this? What are you thinking? Right. Yeah. Because like I said, that's bad, dude. Like, yeah, that made me feel bad just now hearing that because holy shit. Like, I'm telling you, like, that was a pain where I was like, what in the hell was that? Like, I didn't want to stand back up for a minute. Yeah, it's very sickening what stuff got away with back in the days.

[00:19:09] I mean, I everything from harassment to tasteless executives to other peer pressure. But yeah, part three and four were shot back to back, like. Just two days afterwards is like with the same director. And what do you think is a worse name for part three? You know, we ended up with Beyond the Gates of Hell, but it's also known in other countries like as Devil's Stone or Sword of Justice.

[00:19:39] Wow, Sword of Justice is terrible. They're all terrible names, but I'm just like the sword only factors in like the last 10 minutes when he goes all T-1000 and jumping on, you know, vehicles. Oh, man. There's so many other moments that aren't wishes, but are still just like, how did they do that? Like in that one vision that the djinn like casts upon Alexander and she sees a talking skeleton attached to a fence. That is like as nightmare fuel as it gets in the first movie.

[00:20:09] I'm like, where did that come from? Yeah, the whole opening scene where it shows him in ancient times. I wanted to see the lead up to that. I do too. I'm like, how did he overtake this Persian king's palace? And how funny that he's basically one of the right hands to the king and the king's like, what's happening? Yeah. And you knew they just basically filmed it in like a abandoned Bed Bath & Beyond, but they did a good job of making it look. Yeah, it looked great.

[00:20:40] Yeah. Oh, man. Fun stuff. Fun stuff. All right, dudes. I'm going to bail. I actually got to go to work. All righty. Hey, no, it's been a delight having you all on the show.
