As part of our "theme," we start off by summarizing the illustrious career of film composer Alan Silvestri (including playing a pitch-perfect interview of his by BMI Music).

Which of his movie themes is more catchy: Predator or Back to the Future?

Outside of Robert Zemeckis, which comedy/western/scifi filmmakers has he collaborated with a ton?

All that and which awards he's been gracious enough to win!

[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I go home and I write the feather theme. Every cue, let's try the feather theme. It worked anywhere

[00:00:06] [SPEAKER_01]: until with feather came back. And movie like back to the future, I couldn't even look at a piece of

[00:00:12] [SPEAKER_01]: film until I had the tune. The film speaks first. It says something to me and then I say something

[00:00:19] [SPEAKER_01]: back to it. That's really how it feels for me. Bob in, as you know, many know was Bob's a mechus

[00:00:35] [SPEAKER_01]: and Bob listened to the cassette was very nice, thank me for my time and left the room.

[00:00:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Whatever the tapes may have done, I just think it's so important to be in the room because after

[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_01]: everything that happens is got to do with relationships. Let's talk about your creative process

[00:00:58] [SPEAKER_01]: there for a second. Where do your ideas come from? Mine come from the movie and it's this incredible

[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_01]: partner and it's not the enemy, although sometimes you know it can be perceived as such. It is the first

[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_01]: gesture my way and everything is there. And even if it's not, as a composer but also as a viewer

[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_01]: we have to take this film into our apparatus. So that really is for me the start of it all and

[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_01]: it is where any ideas come from. I don't have any ideas actually away from the film. For instance,

[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_01]: a movie like back to the future I couldn't even look at a piece of film until I had the tune.

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I just knew that about that film.

[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_10]: It's a gentle, review show.

[00:02:39] [SPEAKER_07]: Welcome all, welcome all.

[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_07]: Here we are once again to talk about

[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_07]: Remy, Academy Award, Golden Globe,

[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_07]: and Saturn Award, and nominated on Sylvestery.

[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_07]: It's also an Emmy winner.

[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_07]: It's from the Berkeley College of Music,

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_07]: or does it drummer?

[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_07]: But I probably only have him from scoring.

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_07]: Never a movie, it's like, for it or for Scum Contact,

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_07]: the frame Roger Rabbit, Flight, the Abyss,

[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_07]: I'll be return's.

[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_07]: And it's just very smooth as in TV,

[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_07]: as well as the award-winning Cosmos Spirits,

[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_07]: and it's just a huge time, obviously, for 2014.

[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_07]: So when did he become just get on your radar, John?

[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_05]: What was really is to Cosmic Phelm,

[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_05]: back to the future, and prior though, that's what got me into him.

[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, he was kind of always on my radar,

[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_07]: but he was at the very back end,

[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_07]: somewhere in between James Newton, Howard,

[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_07]: and James Horner, just one of those other reliable guys

[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_07]: who wasn't on December, it wasn't John Lawrence, but still.

[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_07]: Just, much.

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_07]: And so he aimed at, I mean, just for maybe six,

[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_07]: that's like his busiest year alone,

[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_07]: where he just does all kinds of adventure films,

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_07]: can films, and young comedies, dramas,

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_07]: and even, you know, just needs to fly to the navigator, so.

[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_07]: I mean, so basically, aside from Predator,

[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_07]: he's mainly Robert some actresses go to guy.

[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_07]: That's true.

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_07]: It just hasn't been Roger Rabbit, all the back of the features,

[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_07]: but yeah, there were some other ones on your head,

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_07]: no idea he did the bodyguard, death becomes her,

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_07]: Ricochet, even John Hughes, Hawking comedy Dutch,

[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_07]: I think, well, I guess that makes sense.

[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_07]: So, to Judgement Knight, even Super Mario Brothers,

[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_07]: we replaced Jerry Goldsmith, because someone's got a score.

[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I think he's got a score.

[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I think he's got a score.

[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I think he's got a score.

[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, a lot of Swimson-Agrimovies are just kind of a little rough,

[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_07]: fun films, but yeah, the racer won one of the BMI film award.

[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_07]: And I was like, I think a lot's track that might've been,

[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_07]: that other starts in Mokka might've been the first score I remember.

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_07]: Once again, replaced Jerry Goldsmith,

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_07]: for a movie called Judge Tred.

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_07]: So, it says again, he said you saw a quicken that dead the other night.

[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_07]: What was your take on that score?

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, that's like a very intriguing take on the last turn.

[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_05]: He kind of had similar elements that he would,

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_05]: but the worst ones were he managed to make his own,

[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_05]: without it selling the legendary, which I...

[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm like, I'm like, I'm the various Marvels.

[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_07]: I didn't realize he did a ready player one,

[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_07]: but I think he did a good job of copying John Williams,

[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_07]: as well as just kind of lending that in someone kind of life.

[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_07]: The one I definitely recall the score for identity,

[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_07]: that one is very haunting, but I don't think...

[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_05]: I think I did.

[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_05]: I remember that being very haunting.

[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_07]: It does attention because mainly, or just paying too much attention to them of itself,

[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_07]: but even cast away, I mean,

[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_07]: this one of his better-noted scores.

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_07]: I think that was where he kind of just...

[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_07]: Instead of relying on a bunch of drums,

[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_07]: he just kind of did more just kind of horns.

[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_07]: The one he does for the comedy Showtime,

[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_07]: that he Murphy and DeNaro,

[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_07]: I think kind of suffers a bit.

[00:06:59] [SPEAKER_07]: It's just one of those words.

[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_07]: Again, the movie's not perfect,

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_07]: and so I think that's just part of it.

[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_07]: It's like, maybe real back a little bit on it.

[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_07]: We're not supposed to take this all that seriously,

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_07]: even though this movie's kind of crazy.

[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's why I don't mind this movie at all.

[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_07]: It's meant to be a spoof, and yet at the same time,

[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_07]: it's a little sloppy, and how it all comes together.

[00:07:23] [SPEAKER_07]: So it's one of those is like, okay,

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_07]: it's not perfect, but it's still somewhat entertaining.

[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_07]: Definitely recall a lot of the heavy music setups

[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_07]: for Wolfgang Peters and Shatter, Young Guns 2.

[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_07]: Maybe a little bit of the jazz downtown

[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_07]: with Antony Edwards and Forrest for the Kirk.

[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_07]: What do you think of his Saturn ward knob for the Abyss?

[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_05]: I think that's your one score.

[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Actually, I think it's quite underrated

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_05]: within this catalog.

[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_07]: Kind of surprised they didn't work more with what's his name James Cameron Moore.

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_05]: He wasn't actually pretty solid for Titanic, I was saying,

[00:08:13] [SPEAKER_05]: but I guess he'd go with that type of composer.

[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_07]: Funny how it all works this business man.

[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_07]: So where would you rank him on your...

[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Jerry's.

[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_05]: With weird, he's actually one of those composers there.

[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_05]: I wouldn't play him like an atop tier, but he's more atop in the middle.

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_05]: He's not on my favorites, but he's definitely not one of the worst ones, of course.

[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, he'd be probably my top 20 or 30, but he definitely wouldn't be in my top 10,

[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_07]: and that's nothing personal.

[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_07]: That's just...

[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_07]: Again, even though I'm not going to get hot in Zimran there,

[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm such a bigger fan of James Horner, Mark Mansina, Tyler Bades,

[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_07]: and even against some of the other ones we mentioned.

[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_07]: He's Trevor Raven, I think, is amazing.

[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, being in just as that sometimes.

[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_07]: That's true.

[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_07]: But yeah, I mean, it's a pretty slang thing.

[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_07]: This really does right itself.

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_07]: And even starting out with the wacky, cult crime comedy,

[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_07]: the double-man gang, bunch of TV movies,

[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_07]: and then Stephen King's Cat's Eye.

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_07]: He was off to a start, and even just some of his other cult comedy

[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_07]: is like summer rental, this is like a rage fortune,

[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_07]: and like yeah, he's set for life, he really is.

[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_07]: He's just... he really has.

[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_07]: Overall, I mean...

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, just this is a Mac is stuff alone, he's just gonna knock it out apart.

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I'm probably gonna say...

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Tuna, ta-da, ta-da, ta-da, ta-da...

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_05]: Although I like to argue that part of the truth is called not be even better than it would be though.

[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_05]: And I'll be caught for a show over there.

[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, a pruder too, does kind of get more moody and especially fast-paced.

[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_07]: It's like it's trying to both emulate,

[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_07]: cop or city roles as well as just city jungle stuff.

[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_07]: And I would be surprised if he really was still

[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_07]: out of that for Stephen Hawkins utter movie,

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_07]: Judgement Knight the following year.

[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_05]: I think it's most subtle in German, I remember.

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_07]: It is most of it went a rap soundtrack,

[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_07]: which ironically was more popular than the movie itself

[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_07]: according to podcasting after dark.

[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_07]: But yeah, he's got some disaster movie scores and other

[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_07]: comedy stuff, practical magic, holy man, even volcano.

[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_07]: I think that's pretty cool.

[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_07]: One of the grumpy old men movies don't recall any of the

[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_07]: scores for Paris family or Ranger games.

[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_05]: I remember in the game school.

[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_05]: But that's about why I can't remember.

[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_05]: I definitely don't remember the Mexican school for that.

[00:11:14] [SPEAKER_07]: And now, but in all fairness,

[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_07]: that movie just doesn't work as a whole.

[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_07]: What lies beneath?

[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_07]: I do kind of recall a lot of the movie scores.

[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_07]: It just needs a better movie.

[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I'd probably say.

[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_07]: And he's got a few knobs and one that

[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_07]: A.S.C.A.P. award for top box office films.

[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm sorry, I really do not remember any of the scores,

[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_07]: but he basically was still a two-grader and mummy, two-mode.

[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_07]: And as for the anime and movies, it's kind of

[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_07]: in rest of the world.

[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_07]: It's just an independent CPI film.

[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I remember that one.

[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_07]: Produced by Disney that it just came out the wrong time.

[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_07]: It was trying to capitalize a madagascar,

[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_07]: but it was a fun movie.

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_07]: It's a fun movie.

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, well.

[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_05]: I must have been both his Avengers squad,

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_05]: but first movie that's all I remember

[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_05]: for the Marvel release, nothing did.

[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_05]: We failed.

[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.

[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Rest of Ed's fairly forgettable.

[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I was kidding.

[00:12:23] Falling.

[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_07]: When he gets into the Marvel stuff,

[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_07]: it just kind of doesn't help that.

[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_07]: He's sharing it with everyone.

[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_07]: So it's easy to install, just to get all the foes

[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_07]: to get a mark-around and then, you know,

[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_07]: Tyler and Danny Elfman, you know,

[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_07]: I forgot he did read too because again,

[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_07]: Christopher Beck was doing the main theme.

[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_07]: And so he heard main life route it.

[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_07]: Obviously, Christmas Carol always,

[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_07]: I don't think I ever really saw it.

[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_07]: And I definitely would record like that

[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_07]: just because the movie's just a story of Boggs.

[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_07]: So again, you know, it's just,

[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm nothing, I'm gonna go ahead.

[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I just, nothing against him.

[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_07]: And he had a decent intro.

[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_07]: He was on Campy Stuff like Scarce Street and Hodge and Chips

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_07]: and then Man of all of all shows.

[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_07]: And then after an episode,

[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_07]: each of amazing stories in TJ Ogre,

[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_07]: he then goes on to tell him to grab something like,

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_07]: nah, nice.

[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_07]: I would actually be interested in seeing

[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_07]: wish one exact episode to scored.

[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_07]: I could see his well because I know I'm pricing them.

[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh, hold on.

[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_07]: I mean, endless said, but I'd like.

[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_07]: Okay, yellow and beauty rest,

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_07]: and you murder or some of the many.

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that was actually underrated score.

[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_05]: Time for the hit.

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_05]: We'll be on lookout for when I do a re-watch.

[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_05]: That's my press.

[00:13:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Good, good.

[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_05]: It's like to make this directing.

[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_05]: So, carronic.

[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_05]: There we go.

[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_07]: All right, so his upcoming role is on Disney's.

[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_07]: In a live action movie, Pinocchio.

[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_07]: And of course, again, it's as a Maxis Twins.

[00:14:14] [SPEAKER_07]: What?

[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_07]: I will be skipping that one, but you're all the best.

[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_07]: And to everyone.

[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_07]: Sorry guys, we're single, Fox.

[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_07]: We just need something new.

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_07]: We're doing the same stuff, just doesn't do it.

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_07]: They didn't go off the wild folks, just saying.

[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_07]: But yeah, recent ones,

[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_07]: I definitely recommend the score for flight.

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_07]: And it just didn't even,

[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_07]: it could have been by anyone in a good work.

[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_07]: You know, I was wise in Vegas,

[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_07]: but it's just that damn good,

[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_07]: just did he or did it to commit an external homicide,

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_07]: you know, while flying a plane.

[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_07]: And just the whole thing is just,

[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_07]: I mean, you kind of remember some of the jazz.

[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_07]: And I mean, it really is just near the end.

[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_07]: It gets far more visceral or you're just like,

[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_07]: I really question how I feel about this man.

[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_07]: Do I fear him?

[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_07]: Do I hate him?
