We've been overdue but it was finally time to sum up Dario Argento's divisive yet stylisticaly influential horror fantasy mystery trilogy THE THREE MOTHERS:

We also contrast the 2018 Suspiria re-imagining with the original film and how many different Blu-Rays to collect of the films as well as try to figure out if Inferno or Suspiria is the better film in terms of pop culture appeal and recognition.

[00:00:59] All-Star cast. Did not expect this big a crowd. And I'm not complaining. That's awesome. That's earned this. I'm your host, Soli. I'm with other genre fans tonight. Back on the show, it's been a minute. Journey with the Cinephiles, David Michigan Garrett Jr. Yeah, thanks for having me back on. All right. And we have movie buff herself, Shauna Egan. Good to see you guys again. Hi, Shauna. We have Mac in the movies, Cinema Mac. Always a pleasure.

[00:01:27] And Max from Cinema Shit Show. Sort of. Sort of. He's rebranding the show. And that's okay. The artist formerly known as my partner in crime and sci-fi geek himself, Gil, is here. Hello. Hopefully he does not shake me for making him watch disturbing movies. And former HBO documentarian, Robert Cohen. Hey, Robert. Hello. What was that?

[00:01:56] You're seeing all the symbols. My real name is Robert. So, hey, we got something in common. Hooray. You mean to say your name's not Robert? That's going to cause a bit of confusion. Oh, no. I have multiple names, sir and or madam, so it doesn't matter. Oh, man.

[00:02:15] And so we're diving into another semi-official trilogy assembled by the great Dario Argento, the yellow maestro himself. Dario. Free. What did I say? I'm pedantic. It's Dario. Dario. What'd I say? No. Dario. Okay. Argento. Yes. Make it all offensified. But yes, we have the Free Mother's Trilogy.

[00:02:44] It goes by a few other different names. We'll dive into that. But man, like this has been a while since we were actually trying to assemble it. But I do really like going into like the semi-official like trilogies where they don't have a number in it. It's just like related in thematic material. Yeah. Oh, a lot like Carpenter's, you know. Oh, yeah. The Death at Door. At the Door. Yeah. Yeah. Lucio Fulci's Free Door. Gigs of Hell. Gigs of Hell.

[00:03:15] And then we've been joking around like doing it with a few other people. Like we've been going back and forth with Smoberg is like, this is his war trilogy. This is his Debbie Downer trilogy. This is. Yeah. And yeah, with Carpenter, I think he popularized it in Argento. He did it technically first, but it kind of caught on on home video. Does Uwe Boll have a? Oh, God. Oh, no. He has his vigilante movies. Yeah.

[00:03:48] I have never actually gotten through. And we will be like, I turn them off. House of the Dead. Well, House of the Dead. I saw it in the theater and I was just, I was. Yeah. I laughed my ass off through the whole damn thing. Yeah. Yeah. It would be funny if you had an Italian knockoff guy who's like, I got nothing to work with. But yeah, just as an overview. Yeah. So the Free Mother's trilogy deals with witchcraft.

[00:04:18] Began in 77. Big blockbuster movie year. Argento's Suspiria focuses on an American newcomer and a prestigious German ballet academy who realizes the school's a front for something more sinister and grisly murders erupt. It was followed in 1980. Let me get for this. With Inferno, which had an American student. Once again, it's always a student from America dealing with the disappearance of her sister and the death of a friend.

[00:04:46] Both connected with the from New York to Rome by an old alchemy book. Mouhaha. And then he followed it up years later, two decades later, to be exact, with 2007's Mother of Tears, which had his daughter portraying an American art student in Rome who accidentally triggers the return of the third mother and uses her latent magical powers to end the witch's reign of terror.

[00:05:12] So it was just a bad idea to wait that long, man. That's what I was nervous about. And I know I didn't watch it, but I was nervous when it's like, it's 27 years later. Yeah, you were asking me and I'm like, I haven't seen it yet. Yeah, that automatically got me nervous. I know it doesn't necessarily mean anything, but damn, that's quite a wait.

[00:05:35] It means something because we all know that Dario's work as his career progressed, a lot of his films that come later are not as good as his earlier films. So Mother of Tears is certainly a bit schlocky and cheesy, but I'm certainly glad that it was made. And it's got a lot of really redeeming qualities and entertaining aspects to it, despite the fact that it's a little bit cheesy. It was a big release.

[00:06:02] So Shauna, you got into Argento because you're a big fan of 87's opera. Oh, God, yes. Yeah. I'm not Shauna, but. Yeah, OK. One at a time. One at a time. One at a time. Yeah, I saw opera when I was a kid. A kid? Whoa. I think I was about 11 or 12. Oh, man.

[00:06:25] And it was on TV late night and my friend and I were sitting up just switching through channels and we found it. And they definitely are intended channel kind of. I kind of fell in love with the whole aesthetic of it. Yeah. And which is why I love Diallo so much. Yeah. It is, as Cam was saying, it's a little bit of a slog sometimes. Hey, you know, I've never floats your boat.

[00:06:50] You know, I I knew about Argento growing up, but his movies were not on cable TV much. And maybe on Joe Bob once in a while or some other just very. Yeah. Small antenna station. And again, movie channel Joe Bob, not, you know, TNT Joe Bob wouldn't show this, but if you'd like movie channel Joe Bob. Yeah. Yeah. Showtime totally would have shown it. And yeah. I mean, I always knew saw him go down in the grades. He was right. Just like you gotta see Suspiria before you die.

[00:07:18] I'm like, that's a very big request. The first time I read about it was Entertainment Weekly did this thing in 1999. The scariest movie of all time. It was, it was in the 25 and that's where I first heard of Suspiria. Then I read about it, you know, in the Leonard Maltin book, he liked it. He gave it three out of four stars. And, and then, but I just couldn't find it at the local video store.

[00:07:45] And then I found another video store and found Suspiria, watched it, loved it, bought it afterwards and the soundtrack. And yeah, that I just, I loved, I love Suspiria. That's a great one. Yeah. There's a, there's a, there's a, there's a long history of Argento films being brought over to America and then heavily recut, edited, cutting out the violence. But at least he was smart about dealing with the censors is like, here, I'll sneak this in.

[00:08:15] So this will still be here. You'll still get most of it. What I didn't really have a choice with the U S releases, but my favorite fact about opera is that when they brought it over to the U S and released it on VHS. Cause I'm old. Uh, they renamed it terror at the opera so that we wouldn't think it was a movie about actual operas, you know, and that was boring. And somebody in, I think it was Gore zone.

[00:08:41] They said, that's like calling police Academy hilarity at the police Academy. Oh man. So. We jumped back and forth. Ethan will jump on repeatedly for this chat. No one will detect it. But it's just, he's fighting off an exorcism. Uh, but go ahead. Do you want to introduce each film just briefly and then discuss all three? Or do you want to do one at a time?

[00:09:11] I think we can just kind of jump around since they all kind of compliment each other. And why don't you give your little like short intro to the other two then? Cause I think that'll be helpful. Like what you did for Suspiria. Uh, so basically. Uh, but with. Inferno is like, we're, we're getting into just so much other material here. Well, if you want, I just, I just literally finished watching Inferno. So I can give you a quick.

[00:09:41] Okay. Did you, did you, did you, did you, did you, did you, did you, did you know what I was watching for me as well? Really? I've never seen Inferno before this. Whoa. I've seen both of the other two movies a long time ago. So I needed a refresher. Inferno really picks up a lot of the themes from Suspiria. It's another, uh, house that has hidden witches in it. there's definitely students involved there's students trying to investigate where the witches

[00:10:10] are in the house and I think that's really enough to know other than stylistically it's very similar to Suspiria in terms of the primary colors the red the green and the blue are just dominant throughout the whole thing and you know it has a lot of the trappings of Argento I am a huge Argento fan

[00:10:36] my whole life so I'll get into a lot more about this but that's really what you need to know about Inferno if you think it's about poetry you are mistaken well I think the sister wrote poetry but Mark was a music student so again another student and then anybody want to take a has anybody watched mother of tears recently I just sort of skimmed it I've I've I've seen a bunch of them but uh

[00:11:01] it's definitely a little more loose with the stuff and basically just saying I call it pretty much a climax she's fighting the main gal in charge yeah doesn't the budget drop quite a bit or like still yeah yeah if you want to lean into it I could let you oh no I'm saying yeah that one he struggled to find at that point with yeah so this is one where a lot of the effects and everything really kind

[00:11:27] of took a hit because of it because he just couldn't find people to help kind of fund exactly what he was trying to do with a lot of the story elements that baby because unfortunately the bridge was the part was like okay I don't think I can take this movie seriously monkeys getting set on fire uh inferno didn't make the money that they were hoping obviously and then that's what yeah um I I wanted to say the

[00:11:53] scene I really enjoyed even though I do love cats is is the cats in the bag the whole just just bringing that like I don't know it's just the imagery of it like I the guy was just pushing the and the rats it just feels so epic to me and yet it was kind of funny and just like it looked great I kind of just love that I did like him getting his comeuppance because yeah he does yeah deservingly yeah yeah

[00:12:17] yeah and the hot dog expected too yeah the knife and the and the um putting the body near the rats and yeah and then as I'm sure you all know this was not a pleasant film for him to make yeah he was sick during it he wasn't but yeah he was pretty much yeah he's imagine that especially you you being the director like I've done some crap indie films before but like yeah just try to think of

[00:12:47] that I gotta tell my I sit first assistant director what to do while I'm hunched up on my back I can't possibly Mario I think yeah they called in Mario yeah it's just like that scene was the most difficult to do with this situation so like I gotta get done I gotta you know that there are no reshoots you know like we almost absolutely necessary is like but imagine being hunched on your back in pain

[00:13:15] and then figuring out what you're I mean Italian films are already complex and that you have to figure out who you're gonna re-duve well everybody you re-duve everybody because they didn't shoot with they didn't shoot with live audio live audio yeah and I want to mention two other things of Inferno 2 is I love the they're talking about what is it the they're like oh there's a sicky sweet smell

[00:13:41] yeah yeah but I just I love that detail of like having you know one person complain and another person mentions it earlier and I'm like I liked how that was done um and I was also wondering like I couldn't really tell I think I don't think it is supposed to be dark comedy at times but like is it because I mean one of the kills when when a woman gets hit like you know the neck

[00:14:06] and then the person grabs that goes up again question and it hits it's like the first time that that imagery it's just like it kind of seems darkly funny to me but are you talking about the death with the window panes yeah where it was kind of like a guillotine but she keeps pulling it down on her head yeah yeah yeah the first time you know a close-up of the hands doing that and going down I was like it seems kind of funny to me but he's just very ineffective it could also just be

[00:14:36] kind of like if you want he's pulling a Sam Raimi you can take this however you want I'm gonna put it in there you know yeah I mean yeah and the crazy part of that scene is like the way it starts is he takes her head and slams it down on the windowsill which has a bunch of tiny little nails sticking out yeah so her head is stuck there that's fucking wicked yeah right right well if there's anything he's he's wicked that's what he's I mean I'm an animal guy and I'm not impacted by

[00:15:06] the cats drowning in Inferno because I know it's just it's a dark how did you feel about the cat actually murdering a real mouse on here okay okay it looks so real it looks so real fair point I didn't think of that I just that mouse was kicking the whole time in that cat's mouth okay but what I'm getting at is because it takes us into the vision yeah yeah yeah we we just say hey you're along for

[00:15:35] this ride but that's how I think I am with the cats in the bag it's just fucking I don't know I thought it was great it's like one thing to be aware of is that I'm going to go into this quite a bit is how much Dario's entire oeuvre or whatever you want to call it is based on a bunch of really recurring themes they're just all there in the bird yeah uses them consistently but in different ways

[00:16:00] and one of the ones we're talking about right now is animals I mean there's a monkey in um mother of tears and in and in phenomenon right not yeah and in and in mother of tears the dog kill in suspiria is one of the best kills I've ever seen because you have no idea where it's coming from then there's cat kills in Inferno there's monkeys there's there's all this stuff being done

[00:16:28] with animals just as much as he's doing stuff with light and with art those are some of his big themes and the movie the movie opens the whole movie opens where she's talking about the three keys her keys are sitting there with a coral snake which I love that which is poison and the the two keys are right there and then she has to open the book with a knife the same way that

[00:16:56] he uses a straight razor against the light bulb in Tenebrae where like whatever the form is whether it's the book you have to cut it or the light has to be hit with a blade because that's the murder weapon but it's also the light that's affecting you in the theater that's getting cut yeah it's always bringing that art into you yeah and there's so much art in all of the movies that uh sort of gets

[00:17:23] reflected in like what becomes lethal um and I just gotta say I'll just jump right to the end like that ending in mother of tears it's actually wonderful because it calls back um uh Tenebrae so well you know getting impaled by this massive work of art only now it's a an Egyptian monolith so yes freaking well and there's there's the animal torture as well yes that in what profondo rosso

[00:17:51] uh friend of russo uh there's the little girl that is torturing lizards and that lizard is actually impaled yep like it's a close-up of inferno of a lizard eating a moth or something like that there is yeah and like at first I'm like why and then yeah it goes with the whole animal thing so yeah I think but here's the thing while you could complain about the animal torture I think at the

[00:18:18] end of the day you realize this is a very vicious uh nightmare sequence trilogy while you know this is different from some video nasty like uh cannibal holocaust where it's just like all the real animal torture is only very tiny animals all the larger animals it's fake it's the funny thing though about the lizard being tortured is that I think that was uh Argento taking a direct jab at Lucio Fulci

[00:18:45] because what were two films probably by Fulci uh don't torture a duckling and lizard in a woman's skin and so I think that was like Argento saying stay in your lane Fulci you music critic who's who's my other Argento um uh fan here you got me we're all our Rob yeah no do you know who that

[00:19:10] little girl was from profondo rosso like let me yeah from uh demons demons yes I couldn't believe it good girl baby kill she isn't kill baby kill shit man and uh James uh one of our partners in crime had a huge crush on Jessica Harper growing up so he would always like when he would see Brian De Palma and other film buffs using her I don't want to say I love that under oh one at a time

[00:19:38] sorry I was gonna say I remember her only from equalizer episode that she was in as a blind woman well she's in a bunch of Woody Allen movies she does a good job she's she's very talented oh she was also uh in this uh the quote-unquote sequel to Rocky Horror Picture Show Shaq Treatment she played Janet that's right okay I gotta watch that again I don't remember that yeah um let me

[00:20:05] rule you guys this though like I mean going on uh which of these in your mind would you like to think of is like an unofficial spinoff because like to Robert's point earlier is like Argento reuses a lot of his themes even though they're not part of this trilogy he's like I can totally see Tenebrae which follows again a poet traveling to Germany and you're like yeah he he if I want I could thank just some of these characters are playing the same person under a different name or in a different

[00:20:35] nightmare they've literally walked in from one nightmare to the next yeah wasn't he just a fiction author though yeah he was he was it was a fiction but it was still kind of the same thing just running around and even though it's just a whodunit it is just like there's still kind of the same focus on the close-up uh and I mean when I when I look at Italian giallos you can definitely get a

[00:20:59] feel for is like everybody's done a tribute to this from comic books to anime to Nicholas Wending Refn even though I know you don't like him but yeah no Refn's a perfect example David Lynch definitely I love Refn what was it um uh Lesling Soho by Edgar Wright Edgar Wright's pretty much doing that every other kind of X-Files type show is doing this yeah it's

[00:21:24] just like I just wanted to not go without mentioning that perfectly Nick's has it up like a few seconds after I was thinking about it but that whole underwater sequence it's like some of the things the way things are shot and like Rob mentioned how everything it's like the the product the production design of Inferno it's like it looks so artful without too much but it's just like and some shots in

[00:21:48] general are just like man it's so great super stylized yeah and that's sort of what makes Argento Argento on a certain level like no matter how much he succeeds or fails uh or you just cannot look away from Suspiria in terms of just how freaking well shot it is and how much every image pulls you in Inferno doesn't pull you in quite as much but but the image is great and the stylization

[00:22:17] is almost as good the the thing for me that makes Inferno not come together quite as well as Suspiria is that this is a joke but you guys I was a half hour into that movie and I'm like no one's dead yet I thought that was pretty cool I thought I thought I thought you were gonna say it was the music no no the thing is yeah the music's a little rough but no the issue with Inferno is

[00:22:44] you're telling you have no one in that movie to identify with Mark doesn't come in until way later and you've got no real connection to him and so are they pulling a psycho or it's exactly I thought it was pretty clever that he you know that he tried to do that but then by the time Mark shows up he's like nobody that you have any like he has no personality there's no connection

[00:23:10] I can agree with that yeah he's Captain Clueless I always call him Captain Clueless with Suspiria you're right there with you're right there with Jessica Harper from the beginning you're rooting for her you're you're invested in her and Inferno that never really comes together otherwise there's some great stuff I think you have a do you do you all like it seems like with Inferno a common criticism is like it is style over substance like do you agree with that at

[00:23:40] all I'm trying to do yeah well the thing is all of his movies are just kind of amazing style but a good style or substance either succeeds or doesn't succeed at different levels depending wait but he's great at style no matter what are you gonna say the same thing about dracula 3d that is that we do not know about that we don't even speak that name just like we don't say

[00:24:07] let me back on stage you don't want to know I own the 3d version horrible horrible mistake let's make this be a dracula let's make this be a dracula free conversation anyway well you know so bad good I was gonna say mother of tears is probably the least stylized of the three yeah um there is some play with the colors but the colors come in more into play as the witch awakens

[00:24:33] yeah but to rob's critique I kind of feel like the for lack of a better word he kind of makes it so voyeuristic you kind of can't look away even though there is sure in connection so like I don't know inferno just floats my boats a little more I just feel like uh you're looking for it more than suspiria you're saying or yeah I think really oh really yeah I'm not with you on that all right

[00:24:59] hey I just I just is like a yeah suspiria is more meat on his bone is like it's not a complete success but it's pretty yeah I have a I think you guys saw a different movie anyway I have a guess I have a question I have a question in inferno the scene where um they're in the classroom yes and the wind blows the windows open or something and you see a vision of this witch

[00:25:28] I'm guessing it's the witch she's supposed to be the witch that appears in even though it's a different actress obviously yeah she's the mother of tears yeah she is the mother of tears so she only appears then she's the roman witch she's there to help influence there of this woman I mean I think that also might be why in um mother of tears she has to be resurrected because it's not literally the

[00:25:56] same actress the same like virgin that we see in I almost kind of took it as uh the main demon in the exorcist it takes on different forms you know bazuzu well she shows up again driving by in a car um so I mean she's there she's manipulating things and I think it's a body snatchers kind of plot yeah it's weird she's it's a lot of it doesn't make sense but god damn it's beautiful

[00:26:24] very traditional depiction of um an old world witch though the one that yes control everything and I really enjoyed that part yeah and in mother of tears they open that what this this box and it has like the cloth in it that's not that's not the because at first I thought it was maybe the dead witch but it was like the cloth right that they found that she ends up being dressed in

[00:26:51] yeah because at the end when the cloth gets thrown in the fire that's what causes her to lose her power in the earthquake to get her killed no did you like mother of tears no no no yes okay yes I I enjoy it for for for fun and that's all right we'll get to pros and cons and there's some boobs there's more yeah there's a lot so you like this more than inferno is that what you're saying

[00:27:21] there's lots of boobs no I so I I I we did say like before this is like if any of us were going to watch this is superior remake I had to re-watch it before this uh I haven't seen that I take it you saw that opening day Garrett oh yeah yeah oh I watched it five times in the theater it's a freaking masterpiece it's are you already familiar with the the writer and the Luca uh a little bit uh

[00:27:47] Don you know I think is how I spell it you know he's done everything Guadagino is that what he is Guadagino yeah he's done everything call me by your name Guadagnino Guadagnino he love challengers bones and all so yeah like he does he does a lot of psychological dramas and I haven't seen that remake but it had Dakota Johnson in it right yes yes it's amazing but one thing that surprised me because I'd only really watched the Spiria a bunch before that and the other

[00:28:14] two were sort of forgotten but now re-watching Inferno and seeing parts of Mother of Tears again I could see how he actually pulled from the mythology of all three films well and making the remake uh the the writer has also they're just were on the same page you know it's like hey we're doing a homage it it's kind of like the Dawn of the Dead from 04 be your own movie don't take scene by scene

[00:28:40] you you can't compare the two because it's like yeah we're about we're talking about the ballet which also happens to be a coping of witches versus the other one which is more of a slow burn mystery with small supernatural happenings and I mean yeah but David uh Calganish I think is how I say it probably not but that's as good as I'm gonna get uh the the writer you know oh the writer he started

[00:29:01] off not so a little shabby you know he did the often bashed uh body snatchers remake from 2007 with Nicole Kidman then he did some other like that it wasn't bad okay I don't hate it you uh you could be on that but all silver but that doesn't automatically mean it's good oh I know if you love Tilda Swinton

[00:29:27] you're gonna love the Suspiria yeah she's got multiple parts she does great in all of them she's a cult of personality too much Argento to deep friend no no no hold on I'll get there I'll get there let me list this resume first but yeah the uh Calganish as previous credits included Joel Schumacher's Town Creek a bigger splash and that AMC horror anthology show The Terror

[00:29:56] so he already had a big big experience with doing kind of possession and emotional breakdown so it's like that's what it needed emotional attachment instead of someone who can just creep you up for 90 minutes and then you forget about the next day you know anyway go ahead next or Ethan sorry yeah what were you not me deep red how is deep red you did that right you know that's in my top 10

[00:30:24] that synced wave music will get stuck in your head for days I keep calling it profundo rosa and I I think um I enjoy that more than tenebrae um but yeah that's called deep red that's great also known as the hatchet murders here's a little deep red hatchet trivia is that there is a cheesy almost exploitation movie from the 80s called they're playing with fire with uh

[00:30:51] danning and the plot of that movie is lifted straight out of deep red I mean rolling too oh man yeah yeah hey so I've got civil danning so you know I knew somebody you might have to come over to his house and uh delete his uh search history watch those ending credits I don't know you're classier than us anyway go ahead I knew somebody that

[00:31:20] uh that can't watch um like the the original italian cut of deep red um with all of the humor in it with the car and the seat not working and all that and there's like I just couldn't get into it and I'm like well there is another cut where all the shit's cut out so just seek that out and give it a second try that might have been why they weren't successful at first is like people saw the neutered version so

[00:31:47] then they were just like well you know if what I need is like five extra minutes it can't possibly better be better it's like anything uncut is automatically way better than you know unless you hate humor yeah it's not like they cut out the violence which is surprising enough they just cut out the comedy stuff yeah yeah and it's kind of like what he did with the italian version of dawn of the dead he took out all the one-liners that romero had he's like ah those italians they don't

[00:32:17] get humor like that he kept the pie fight in at least that counted as violence in their eyes even though it's physical comedy but uh was this the first movie you guys saw udo care and rest in peace hell no really okay no i didn't sure that detective i think i saw him in the

[00:32:40] barbarella or uh barbwire you saw him in barbwire okay yeah blink for me as well so i knew he was an andy warhol and when he was a guy but i'm with you mag the first thing i saw him is yeah he's that vampire council guy who gets you know oh god yeah i know i'm sure just i saw that that dracula movie in college it was so great that movie's hilarious

[00:33:04] where are you talking about the uh the one yeah yeah any warhol didn't really have anything to do with it but yeah yeah i i wasn't that kind of turned me off that movie did if he didn't get if it wasn't virgin blood he had to throw it up i like the frankenstein one much better than the frankenstein that one's good too

[00:33:29] but yeah he just always had that fucking amazing he was like the go-to euro trash guy he was like yeah we need a european villain who speaks very eloquent get lay or transylvania guy let's get who do care and he shows up or klaus kinski well yeah if you if you want to risk it not getting done on time sure or possible a gun on yeah but yeah i mean the dude has been in everything the end of

[00:33:57] violence end of days europa mother's mass epidemic i'm like barbed wire stop it first time i saw first time i saw udokir was in mark of the devil maybe mark of the devil man dude laurice von trier likes him right isn't that yes yeah

[00:34:24] and if you ever needed a non-budget straw dogs or diehard knockoff he was often there being a mad scientist or a bank robber he just i remember he had a good commercial in the late 90s too where it was kind of like a james bond type thing and he would just stop the person in the car and have a few lines i remember that i forgot what it was promoting yeah late it was 98 i think yeah and yeah he is so you know i just remembered since i'm doing these tangents about sort of

[00:34:52] sexy movies he's in the story of oh which is a really good movie oh yeah he got his skin of max fix on um but uh yeah i mean i'm just surprised at how reserved and laid back he is with delivering all this exposition to our female heroine in that movie because you just don't really expect that usually he

[00:35:15] he for a decade after you know he was always in tits so yeah you know doing everything being war criminals being serial killers and just like yeah i'm just very taken aback that he's kind of slowly drawing you into this world he's kind of like some of the other visions and distorted beasts in fulci's the beyond that just i love his uh i love his interview for the uh when anchor bay had that

[00:35:39] three disc release of sysperia they uh yeah yeah they interviewed udokir for it and at the end of the the featurette udokir is looking at the camera like dario call me i need work that guy worked all the time he never yeah never did it not work yeah it's like oh man and we saw

[00:36:02] two evil eyes is that yeah yeah romero anthology with argento yeah that's a good one and the guy running through all three films um was vorelli in all three films he was the guy in the wheelchair right oh my god makes me think of the ventriloquist guy from devil doll he didn't he didn't show up in

[00:36:25] the third one deep mystery science theater guys i he he was disgusted he was disgust in the first one he apparently showed up in inferno but he was already dead by the time uh you know he died he died in inferno he was not in mother of tears but i always applaud there was a guy in a wheelchair and mother of tears though too right right that's what he's asking if it's the same guy so i'm gonna

[00:36:50] say like i don't think so given how one of them is likely dead but yeah no that's a good i knew i was forgetting something so good good catch so where do you come away with it gill on just like dark fantasy like when is too much too much and when is it enough to where you're okay with not all these questions being answered you really it's gonna well they're not really the kinds of films i usually go

[00:37:15] after right right right but objectively like well i got more entertainment out of um the spirit i think for the three films okay good to know because this is what's interesting like i did i was i wasn't afraid to watch these growing up but i was just like i really don't know what that's about you know if people are gonna hype it to death and it's not gonna live up it did live up but it was just always interesting i was like yeah it's like when you ask someone a follow-up question

[00:37:44] what's this about you're like just see it i'm like okay did it did you did you rent it or they just were on cable tv a lot oh wow okay it was the first time i watched some of us were back in the rental days yeah we had we had to wait we had to wait years and years and years for suspiria to be released unrated these would have been garage sale type movies these would have been get out of thrift

[00:38:13] store and hide under your pillow yeah yeah oh man and it is wild though too just like like even paul verhoeven i think definitely does attribute to some shots in that with the spider in uh his erotically charged dark comedy the fourth man oh that's great i don't know if anyone's seen that one did you guys have seen every barrel of them yeah yeah oh i need to go back and re-watch

[00:38:38] it it's been so long it's so hard there's no what inspired the mother of tears trilogy uh it was it was based on actually something that had been written ages and ages 1845 yep hmm tell us the story it was called the suspiria de profundus about the fates oh the three fates yep and then uh argento turned it into like the three mothers

[00:39:05] and the three arrows yeah that's kind of a general way of just like i'm doing a nod to it instead of literally copying and pasting the same formula you know i think they call them the three sisters at one point and is that an inferno well i think inferno inferno they say sisters i want to say this go ahead it's the inferno that lady asked the guy have you ever heard of the three sisters he

[00:39:30] goes you mean those black singers oh my god oh man yeah i didn't know the staple sisters were known in italy oh that scene that was she was was fucking bizarre i just like hey strange man come into my come into my apartment while i go and what'd she go do take a shower yeah it's like you just keep me company for she just goes and sits in the bedroom while he's in the living room which is weird

[00:40:00] yeah carlo the sportscaster yeah well he didn't believe in any of that hokum pokum so you know what happened to him that's where i feel like a lot of other kind of candy man under clive barker inspired movies kind of definitely get a deal from is like the non-believer gets killed the one who believes cancels out the supernatural villain like they're a negative thought just i'm not going to think about you anymore i'm going to erase you you know yeah and i have another thought about mother of tears is

[00:40:30] the only one where they had an actual good witch yes the other two didn't have you know a good witch or anything like that and it was just mother of tears that did so are you telling me the lead in that yep asia is yeah definitely and then yeah right by her own foundation yeah yeah yeah yeah funny dario dario nicolati also shows up and she's one that helped influence argento to do

[00:40:58] suspiria inferno she wanted him to move more into like supernatural stuff so to bring her back was pretty cool but uh i think she gave a terrible performance and i was very disappointed because i've loved dario so you felt like it was a tarantino type thing or she should have stayed behind the camera is that what you're saying well this guy i just i think argento should have directed her better

[00:41:21] well do any of you know who morin adias is off the top of your head that's in that no no okay because she went on to do some good tv stuff i was surprised i read that she's in the cast but go ahead hit me yeah i don't know the naked witches she a naked witch is she a naked witch i don't know i'll look you don't know i hope dario didn't direct her in the cast

[00:41:48] yeah i don't know i'm afraid to find out um yeah so uh there's a great write-up on pokio blaze uh wordpress blog which looks at this whole thing and he uh noted how there's a lot of use of german expressionism artwork and other red elegant stuff some that might be visual references to other 40s classics like the red shoes uh did anyone else kind of feel like there was some

[00:42:18] lovecraft inspiration and just other stuff well i think there was the one shot i think udokir was looking through a magnifying glass and his eye was kind of one his one eye he was looking through is that the movie is this the right movie i'm thinking of um you guys are any okay i didn't re-watch it because i'm never gonna i just we're galling on memory because we only have one in my time so

[00:42:43] just names of mater in it mater lacrimarum that's her character's name yeah she must be the mother of tears then okay okay and then but that that one shot kind of reminded me of uh what was the one with val kilmer it was a uh uh celestic parody film top secret top secret they did that with was it was it peter pushing yep that was a great joke

[00:43:15] wow i never i didn't think we'd get a second reference in there that's perfect we're all over the place let's see where we could kind of keep on like with on the trilogy like what do we think is the the influence what's the legacy of these three films or i was gonna say i read somewhere that he was inspired by disney actually yeah for like the

[00:43:38] first film yeah alice in wonderland yeah well you're saying this is the inspiration for hocus pocus i knew little evil stepmothers in there for sure definitely what's that one jim henson produced movie the witches i think it's called yeah yeah yeah yes the witches and jelga houston yeah yeah yeah definitely at least did fox release i know they did inferno but did they release suspiria

[00:44:06] 20th century fox like did they i think i don't think that i was surprised with inferno that this had such a studio backing now that i think about your disney comment if you think about sleeping beauty wow the colors in that i think that's what i was thinking about i think that's what that would have been very very and the cauldrons there was that really cool alchemy lab in inferno too where she goes in and it's like oh god one of those basements in prague and all that bubbly like

[00:44:36] fire like alchemy alchemy stuff um like just no one that's a good point so basically yeah just look at any family friendly thing and say how can we get brothers grim level dark well i mean for suspiria they originally wanted to do it where it was going to be much younger children 12 year olds yeah and but then they told him he couldn't do any of the stuff he wanted to so that's why they kind of played with

[00:45:04] the set design to make it look like it's almost fairy tale like with how like the doorknobs are up much higher than they would normally be right it kind of goes into kind of just small like stuff that could be any kind of stress or anxiety kind of thing is like that's not in the place where it should be am i looking at this the right way it's like something that makes a puzzle i was just gonna say the dance studio didn't have much in the way of dancing in it plus it's pretty

[00:45:32] labyrinthian for a you know for a dance studio which one suspiria suspiria yeah it's the remake that really pulls the dance element into it that's what it looked like yeah that was amazing well and again it just kind of gets you out of your comfort zone which all i ask for with any movie every once in a while is like am i gonna watch it non-stop no but it would kill in a theater

[00:45:58] experience if there's a live theater showing with a q a i would probably go to it if there was a live opera i could see people doing a rocky horror with it maybe oh you know what i gotta show you guys something so no one at home will but that you can all just i'll be right back if you want me to share the video i can do it but uh so yeah mac uh where would you rank all these other kind of supernatural

[00:46:22] s kind of terror and mystery guys like because it's like argentina's like the most mainstream of the italian influences but uh you know he kind of gets put on a pedestal honestly i'm more of a fulci fan than i am an argentina okay that's just me personally and that's what i was just hearing all different perspectives blue collar that's the one thing i like about fulci is that there's a lot of blue collar horror with him as opposed to the white collar horror of argento and fulci is kind of

[00:46:49] more successful at getting out of what the other italian greats would do where they do a mad max knockoff followed by uh yeah he's more versatile i'll give you that and i just he's a journeyman yeah i mean you look at something like contraband which is like his one-time neuro crime film and it's just like right shit that's a fulci movie yeah uh silver saddle is another one that just came out of nowhere when i first saw it so yeah i'm more of a fulci fan uh i would say mario bob

[00:47:18] was my number two okay then i will put our genital mario okay perfect okay so robert has some show and tell but on the theme again of light and color and art what is it at the end of suspiria that ends up killing the witch oh uh all right sure here we go i think it's open for interpretation that's sweet that is cool

[00:47:45] like looking down a that is the peacock reflecting tube yeah that's a peacock it's from a double uh or is it gatefold of the soundtrack but here's the thing about a peacock it's it's the perfect symbol using an animal again of the range of color and i even have this lovely replica oh that's cool

[00:48:11] of the blade that she pulls out from the peacock to kill the mother which you can actually see her in never mess with a peacock man um don't mess with the peacock because it's color so color kills the way i just assume that's with a porcupine before i mess with a peacock um no it was a peacock again we're back with color and there's so many themes with it and the way you held up that stance i feel

[00:48:36] like the dagger stance has kind of also been stolen for like photographic posters that was in the neck definitely some true stews and type poster artwork but anyway now you know what a freaking argento nerd i am for sure and uh so uh david where would you kind of just like how would you recommend like introducing some of these movies to different kinds of crowds well whether it's a rowdy party

[00:49:02] crowd or one who's more focused and patient with suspenseful kind of stuff or i mean if you're gonna go for more ruckus i would definitely say mother of tears just because i think you can kind of zone out for large sections of it and kind of get to the wildness at times um for me i think in suspiria and inferno are more of ones that you kind of have to be ready for that type of

[00:49:28] kind of nightmare logic type stuff yeah so like that's an after 2 a.m kind of movie right and i would say actually to kind of watch a little bit of argento's um jolly before you get to this one just because you really want to be prepared for his like filming style and how the first time you see suspiria sometimes it's more of this like you kind of get lost in all of the visuals and it's not until you really kind of the second watch we start to really kind of delve in to see that there is more

[00:49:55] story there i was actually gonna ask you and shauna and robert that have you ever met a knucklehead who did the whole we got it all in one take i'm like no you did it how it's so discombobulated deliberately and there's gonna be plenty of stuff which is like the shining is pretty much a knock off of this it's like yeah it's like there's no way to get it all in one take you know it's gonna

[00:50:21] take probably 10 viewings you know it's like so i've never encountered anyone like that but it would be funny if someone trolled like it's like oh you just start tell them how did you not get it in one take i got the whole movie and i totally understand it i was involved with the screenwriter she gave me all the secrets but it's not one of the things that we really love about

[00:50:44] certain movies it's like when as a film lover when you leave the movie going i know i'm going to have to come back and watch that again because you feel and you want to that the movie is like instead of out of frustration like what's everyone seeing it it's there to like get and you just can tell it's there that's so fun i guarantee you in 77 the people who liked it the people who hated it the people

[00:51:09] who were whatever they didn't know how to explain any of that probably i don't know how they could have because it wasn't that like most of what you see so i wonder if for today's audiences some of it's a little dated but the reality you know they've probably seen other people do it the kills the kills in suspiria are still pretty unique and pretty brilliant i was wondering about a special effect in mother of tears usually he likes to do practical effects i'm i know that

[00:51:39] um but there's a scene where the guy's like screaming into a phone and his mouth is wide open i almost wondered if that was cgi but it was probably practical effects right i i really don't know but it is there's no way it's cgi cgi didn't exist at that point in 2007 to that level well oh i thought you said oh i thought oh sorry oh my god buddy come on yeah our shinto really embraced uh cgi

[00:52:07] oh my god and it all looks terrible especially that what was that the uh praying mantis in dracula 3d oh well so to both you guys's points it's watchable i really don't get into it but i do like some other more modern argento stuff like the stenthal syndrome and oh what a messed up movie man what well but at least it was an organized movie instead of just a

[00:52:37] mess but like hard player card player was pretty good yeah that's basically sleepless sleepless was i do like sleepless it's good adrian brody made jello better than it had any right to be yeah absolutely that was a tribute movie and so many people are so hard on it they're like the makeup's awful i'm like it's kind of a tribute to those old school kind of do-it-yourself kind of movies but i mean there's some imagery in francis ford coppola's youth without youth from 2007

[00:53:06] that almost looks like one of these kinds of italian movies nope tim roth well but he's in it isn't he nope you're taking up the yes tim ross okay yes all right this is where i'm where he's like in three different realities and yeah it's very ambitious but it was a classic book so it was yeah very ambitious i i don't remember it but like yeah i just feel like mother of tears he's kind of

[00:53:36] just on autopilot and i really have no issue with him i i know some people like his dark glasses because that was kind of like come back for him mother of tears is fun it's just so schlocky and trust me if you guys put it on i'll watch it with you gladly i don't know if i do that myself again yeah it's not great but it's i did like that entertaining i did like that one woman we watched i liked watching her deep rock yeah yeah i just knew gill was gonna get into the sleeves

[00:54:05] i mean some it seems like he paid more attention to the effects and you know the violence and not exactly you know trying to create a mood it didn't seem like an argento flick until like the last 15 minutes yeah and then it really kicked in and i was like okay this is what i wanted yeah let's see i guess i just inferno just went pretty fast for me so i i guess i saw a different movie like i just

[00:54:34] suspirio i thought was a good slow burn but yeah i just suspirio is just i don't know that really i mean i just finished watching inferno and i thought it was interminably slow but i still enjoyed it i that's my top movie of the 80s man like i just and i trust me i'm not trying to be a contrarian like i'm i know they say don't go with your gut i just i i'm just kind of more drawn to that those people enjoy what they enjoy but there's just you know this is kind of the fun of this

[00:55:02] when it comes to jessica harper and suspirio it's like i can i don't know i enjoy her way more than the people in inferno as a character i just the guy in inferno i usually see him playing the dick and other stuff yeah i think that's what was so fun too seeing him get a fun i guess the death traps were more organized but i think this is it like this is a living art gallery basically with

[00:55:32] shocking endings and anyone who says i'm predicting what's about to happen is like oh no you can't because like then it'll go in a whole other direction and so the the guy in the um what is it was it an ice cream truck or the hot dogs or whatever the one that kills the guy man yeah like that i really did not expect that i'm like what the fuck and the nice thing with that is it parallels exactly the scene with the blind guy and the dog you're like he's being surrounded and you're like what in

[00:56:01] the world could possibly get him yeah and then it just comes out of nowhere you're like you didn't expect it at all yeah so that he got it again in inferno was nice except this time it was cats and you didn't expect that at all cats and rats the uh and i'm able to shut my mind off because like it's a very mature handling of all this stuff so like if i just as a trigger warning if anyone has

[00:56:26] had a really really tragic backstory these movies might not float your boat but i if you are open to just very surreal kind of stuff and just open-ended stuff with an actual vision behind it i think they will appeal but yeah go ahead i'm sorry i'm not trying to want i wanted i wanted to bring up um captain clueless the the you know the second star of inverno once he shows up um

[00:56:57] mark there's actually a funny video that says avoid captain uh uh he did his own stunts in the climax with all the fire and the explosions so i didn't get my sag credit but i got my own stunts i have to give him props for that man i mean i didn't like his performance i didn't like his character uh but that he fucking did that

[00:57:24] that that's amazing he called a tom cruise yeah all he had to do was open he opened a window and looked into like a vent and then that the witches completely knocked him out like they could as usual and yeah they could have killed him 10 times over well wait he's that should have been the heart that should have been the subject must need heart medicine that should have been the subtitle or catchphrase this movie will kill you 10 times over was the guy in the wheelchair in that movie uh

[00:57:53] yeah was he trying to kill him that was that was um uh malaria inject him with something and i couldn't tell was he trying to like kill him or not and then he ends up almost killing himself yeah well he's choking yeah so guilt what would you say i saw him i thought eyebrows he definitely he scratched mater on his briefcase like is he trying to like like he was trying to warn him about

[00:58:19] the mother yeah but but then when he keeps telling him to come he was telling him to come closer he tries to inject him so is he trying to kill him but then go ahead i think he's trying to drug him why um either to bring them to the marchers or to take him somewhere where they can't get to him

[00:58:43] how's he gonna do that in mother and mother of tears doesn't the woman try to doesn't the guy in the wheelchair also try to drug her or something yeah i did like too that the the nurse was uh like in many of the other movies and like in the remake like these powerful like subjects that served the main witch and so she's sort of like the mouthpiece for the wicked old evil witch who then shows up as death

[00:59:13] at the end only in mother of tears you get like a young beautiful witch all the other you know both of the other movies they're both the ugly wicked shriveled up witch right they now do you feel like their beauty is compromised by all the evil like deforming them and everything or do you just think that's just whatever appearance it wants to take that's random or do you think get the impression that in both

[00:59:40] movies and in the remake it's because they're very old and they centuries old and they haven't regenerated yet the the remake makes the regeneration part very clear but the yeah the argento movies hint that they're you know bringing in these young girls and stuff because you know they want to help the the witches stay alive and like this is where i could not say what you want about the third one i could not call any of these first two movies bad and competent in any way shape or form even if i was not the audience

[01:00:10] for it i would just be like someone clearly had a vision a mad mad vision so we saw it put onto film without any interference so it's like yeah i i could never call any of these overrated you know i could never in any good consciousness now gill what what i know some italian movies can be clusterfucks or discombobulating and some movies without many answers can be frustrating what do you think keeps

[01:00:35] people watching these movies other than the shock well with the argento films is definitely the over the top you know violence well i mean actually blood and gore was more in the mother of tears than the others there was more of that than that but but like even the suspense and the acting and the characterizations like oh ask rob yeah it's the i mean i think overall in in all the first of all

[01:01:00] suspiria was pretty groundbreaking for the time yeah and it's just stylistically and the music everything there's so much about it that's just so compelling to watch um and inferno has a lot of that too even though i don't feel it comes together quite as well so for their time these were pretty

[01:01:24] violent gruesome well told very stylish horror films and if you like style like in you know great movies like uh like the vampire movie like uh daughters of darkness you know where it's like just that incredible amount of style with your horror yeah um i think that's that's really what makes especially suspiria a masterpiece and inferno uh a really you know great film in terms of what's

[01:01:52] what's there you know what should be talked about a little bit more yeah is the the score of inferno it's like it's really hit and miss with people i didn't mind it i thought it was okay i like it yeah yeah it's trippy and it doesn't seem to fit the movie at times but it's very it doesn't fit you anyway would you say the score from the from the first ones is very early it's keith emerson so you

[01:02:19] know emerson lake and palmer which i love yeah it's just like nothing is happening and yet the music suddenly goes it's like elevator music elevated well i mean it argento said that he didn't use goblin on this one because he specifically didn't want something like that i think i read he said at this point because yeah nice three well

[01:02:49] they keep changing members and stuff but uh he specifically said that he didn't want it to be as bombastic but the score for the movie is pretty bombastic yeah right it's insane it's insane that he would say that it doesn't make any damn sense it's kind of like when you see people artists man doing a war movie and saying those goblin scores are some of the greatest scores of all time

[01:03:15] those goblin scores are amazing so shana you've had the opportunity to see some of these movies like demons and opera live with an actual like goblin opera um oh yeah really uh well did you go to that rob did you see that uh i had tickets and then it got canceled here but i know they play around and i'm hoping to see also twice i had tickets to see the uh the movie score festival that uh trent resner

[01:03:42] was gonna do and oh man got canceled too so hopefully someday i'll get to see it nine inch nails well both of those are fantastic nine inch nails and smashing pumpkin music videos are totally argento inspired um yeah actually pumpkin's one of my faves oh jesus but but yeah what would you make of just the overall theater experience if you're going to watch some of these movies with like a home projector studio or with an actual if you have the opportunity to see it on a big screen see it on a

[01:04:10] big screen yeah i mean you know there's no comparison no yeah it's it really is theatrical it's just yeah i think the theater to the sound especially it's a spirit it's so when it's nice it's great rumble it's so good i mean i would imagine it would even get under your skin which is what fully should do anyway you should actually feel like you're in the room and something's about to explode or

[01:04:37] yeah exactly can i can i tell you guys a quick story sure i've always got stories nick's our guy so i i i was at a finger at a convention uh in california and we i'm not jealous that's awesome that's great we got to go i don't live there anymore so i don't get get to do cool stuff like that but we got uh tickets for a preview of player witch project okay and we were the last one yeah you

[01:05:05] told that yeah oh my gosh did i already tell it go ahead and go to go in the chat you haven't heard it i read in the chat but oh okay it wasn't on air oh no everyone needs to hear this yeah right it's very important um so we were the last ones there we're sitting in the front row seats which i normally hate but sitting there and having everything right in my face and i'm i'm i'm terrified man i'm

[01:05:31] looking left and right all over the screen trying to figure out where is it coming from what is going on when's it gonna pop out and uh the movie ended we were all terrified um and so guys taking the piss in the corner right yeah yeah which is fun um uh because that's not what's happening uh if you paid attention to the movie just somebody with me didn't understand it at all um and so these people

[01:06:00] drive me back to the parking lot it's empty now because the conventions is over and they drop me off and then i start walking to my car and i hear my own footsteps and it's just going and going and i yeah and i'm getting more and more paranoid and freaked out because i'm already freaked out and i i start walking faster i get to my car i'm looking in the windows i'm looking around making

[01:06:24] sure there's nobody in there or nothing in there um i get in now i had bought a uh best of goblin uh cd while i was there and i'm like all right let's go ahead and start the car and let's just get home and i pop in this new cd because i'm like fuck yeah and the good combo the very first song was that

[01:06:47] not a good combo no it's not so as i'm still like shaking and paranoid i'm i'm driving and the cd kicks in at the very first track is the track for suspiria where you know diddly diddly diddly diddly do and then they start saying which which which and i'm getting more and more freaked out man i

[01:07:11] barely made it home um it was just the perfect combination i get home i go i run inside and then i'm like okay you know 30 minutes later 30 minutes later i'm like i need a cigarette so i have to walk outside and as i'm out there i start hearing this crazy screeching like and i'm like holy

[01:07:34] jack holy fuck it was two cats fucking man oh really oh god yeah it all comes back to cats man don't mess with cats at least they were lucky that night isn't it wild though that argento cinematographer luciano tovali has actually done a lot of stuff like he's worked with barbette schroeder on a lot of stuff so if you've seen single white female or

[01:07:59] last thing before and after and a lot of those other word he's done some there's some comedy yep did he do did he do more or the valley obscured by clouds the pink floyd movies that'd be interesting i i that's you know he's not credited but he should have i haven't seen those but i know about him but yeah he did do tenebrae interesting but yeah i mean pink floyd's the wall is like totally

[01:08:25] like whatever they're seeing in an art house theater and just putting it together but yeah i mean uh so uh garrett i know you're a physical media consumer as are you ethan uh does anyone have suggestions on what they think is the best version to get of uh both inferno and suspirio because like you know there's the arrow films and blue underground for inferno but suspirio has so many like there's the australian 40th anniversary there's the german freedess letterbook edition

[01:08:55] there's the u.s restoration with a cd soundtrack and then there's the uk indiegogo and german cock media is like man i know for me i have the synapse 4k is what i picked up for suspirio i think blue underground put out something for inferno but i know there's a lot of speculation and hopes that that gets 4k

[01:09:20] remastered agreement yeah but i know there might be rights issues there especially with um i don't know if fox still has any something that they're kind of kind of putting their heels in the ground what does disney want with inferno to not release physical media you just made me realize something here's can we cam you got a promise we can do this as an episode once it's out but we because if there's anything i'm excited for right now because it's been restored to

[01:09:49] 4k we all have to come back we all have to talk about what we get to see the uncut version of the devils that's gonna be oh i haven't seen that movie oh my god there's two ken russell 71 can i grab to ethan that you're all over reading that yes you're gonna go to oh i love him yeah you're gonna get to see the movie with the most blasphemy ever okay all the blasphemy put back in

[01:10:17] i will take you all there wake in fright have you already seen is going to be put back into the movie let's do it and let's do a ken russell special it'd be very right have you heard of that you've heard of it heard of what how fucked up isn't that i heard that's really fucked up what is what's it called i've heard of it but this is just fucked up in terms of just being irreverent and it's based

[01:10:41] on a true story and it's incredibly well shot and it's incredible the production design is amazing so yeah yeah it's it's gonna be fun i believe because i've seen some of his stuff recently and i'm like holy shit yeah the devils is over the top of me it is well let's not forget the one donald sirlin psychological movie uh don't look now look now yeah great movie that's totally like

[01:11:11] it's never worked for me no whoa stop it i'm keeping it multiple tries how many times it's it's not a typical movie it's just it's very you're not going to enjoy it but it's a good overall like it had a vision yeah i i'm a little bit more upset about them trying to remake obsession i'm sorry possession possession yeah well yeah that's weird that they're remaking that yeah

[01:11:39] if they can try it in a like they did with suspirio where it's just in name only i'm cool with that but yeah yeah possession from 81 like that's totally a ken russell meets like omen kind of damn neil isabala johnny yeah i haven't seen yeah i gotta go back and see it really good i think you'll find it compelling and the visuals will give you nightmares so okay it comes on turner classic

[01:12:05] movies so let's go but are we gonna are we gonna wrap up soon i gotta yes yes yes yes so this is earlier than usual listen to this boss the demons are coming after us demons right so we're messing around with zoom we can disappear or vanish damn you're not really at the beach are you do you want me to be i might have to flee this country it's going so insane um

[01:12:35] yeah so uh mac uh how would you recommend uh watching these movies if you had a choice like just like uh seeing with a lot of theater seeing with a group of friends see them worse from best uh reverse order mother of tears inferno and then and if you're still with us then you'll stay for the dessert which is

[01:12:57] yeah i know that that's cool i i should try it that way and kind of like how my sister and i joke about this with certain filmmakers who are uneven it's like they got the worst movie out of their system first so they could come up with the treasure uh get gary you're an author of horror i promise i'll get that review of up soon of your work uh would you say you were inspired by some of the genre greats or did you have some other kind of authors that you were inspired by and making your

[01:13:26] um i mean it's since my uh book that i had written was a zombie thing it was more of a romero which i mean okay no the dead was one of my favorite films growing up so i mean i just had some gentle head his little hands on there yeah that was that's cool and i it is wild though too how like with reddit now i'll see suggestions for a book or a comic book and everyone will be like looking for

[01:13:53] something inspired by this and they'll be like i did read that holy smokes didn't realize it was by that same artist who did the poster for that famous movie and it's a small world after a while so reddit's our cheat sheet instead of going through endless forums i mean like i've come up i'm back with nothing um did you ever garrett did you ever read the walking dead yes um i've read a few

[01:14:16] of the um kirkman yeah the like when i like compiled it all together to make it easier where i could just fly through i've read i think the first two of them paperbacks yeah yeah it is well though how argento has dealt with on dead people and other stuff but he hasn't really done zombies as much other than helping out romero so it is but when i was revisiting masters of horror recently i was

[01:14:42] kind of just taken aback i'm like argento kind of goes with atypical stuff like just rent a woman who's literally branded and a few other just unusual mysteries and all the other ones feel more argento-esque than the actual ones he directed and wrote so it is kind of wild how i filmmakers like him if i had to sum them up they're tricky they're tricksters they just get to get you get a signature style but you never

[01:15:08] get a coherent one and that's by design like they're gonna do with whatever they're feeling versus whichever movie performed best last and we got to repeat that it's it's interesting but like you guys said it's also kind of rare to see someone be have this much creativity and be left alone censorship and translation and all so but you know you know that the suspicious success that that helped for a

[01:15:38] little bit because the studio said they were they were surprised but that it did that well so so you know that helps you for a little bit no the lack of success for inferno you're saying that's why it took 27 years for mother of tears to come out i mean you expect a delay but i'm not sure if 27 years is yeah but that's what happened he had trouble getting funding yeah you know so

[01:16:02] yeah i think it was only three million dollars again from other tears in 2007 three or four million dollars um yeah well what about everybody else are you gonna yeah how would everyone else all right i'll go i say first of all watch the original suspiria in a theater if you can

[01:16:29] if you can't there's a synapse films 4k blu-ray ultra hd with the best quality and probably the most features that's still available it's about 60 bucks and then from there i would script straight to the remake watch that you're so cool then if you're a huge fan and you love argento and what he does

[01:16:55] is move on to inferno and if you're still a huge fan then go on to mother of tears that would be my order skip to demons free in the church yes go back and start with crystal plumage and deep red and demons and then you can go to mother of tears what blows my mind though is how demons 4 also known as the sect feels more like a argento movie than it actually is

[01:17:20] he's the producer what year did demons come out 86 i think 85 i think i saw it way back then i think i saw it way back then but it's a very argento theme idea with the idea of like the film that just go crazy the mask and the art that kills it's all very very argento well clarify it's limberto baba the son of mario baba yes yes director yeah yeah i think it's been a fun chat all

[01:17:48] and i'll close with the key i'll close with the key is under the shoe the heels of the shoe under the so heels of the shoe i know i just quote it yeah nicely nicely done it's been a delight all and uh shauna david mac anyone who wants to promote anything else let me know like uh yes uh cinema sanctorum uh my book was released

[01:18:18] a couple of weeks ago uh cam sullivan uh i don't know how i got there yeah cam sullivan loid kaufman greg lamberson bill plimpton and others share their most memorable movie theater experience it's available on amazon nice yeah it was pretty much if you like any kind of just essays on genre movies and where to find him and everything that's a lot of horror so no skipping on

[01:18:40] the horror yeah love that some sci-fi some mystery but mostly core but uh david what do you got cooking you know i i've got a never-ending cycle and you're always able to pack in like nine compact reviews as well as yep i do that for my podcast uh journey with the cinephile yep um outside of that i do written reviews that kind of started everything and it's all on my blog that i do um and that is horror review

[01:19:07] dot web node dot com oh boy hi hey it's rewarding it's the gift that keeps on giving giving out the voice let it rumble uh and rob always delight i think you've summed up some of the best points kill you're on fire even yeah always bring it and next you never don't enjoy yourself and uh shauna you have

[01:19:30] anything you want to promote or no no no this is the demon dealing with a dark barking dog over here are you sure it's a dog yeah i'm glad to know all you guys because like everyone's always staying busy and posting different discussions it was like see that's what we should be using social media for instead of just someone posted this or that we're noticing lots of hot air from certain

[01:19:54] people online i'll tell you that holy shit one guy loves i don't know if some of these people it's like do these people make money off these things i don't know because that's pretty there are some one of them has admitted it to me is like i keep getting angry i make money off your anger i'm like well at least you're an honest thief yeah yeah so yeah it's not promotion i'm not on here
