I cover the new PopcornFlix produced web series SALVAGE MARINES which is now available on most free streaming sites.
Are Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers) and Peter Shinkoda (Daredevil TV show) able to elevate the material? Is it rather attention-getting in its short episode count? While looking bigger than its budget, what main shortcoming needs to be addressed? And more applause for yet another indie venture!

[00:00:01] Our galaxy, humankind colonized space so long ago.
[00:00:07] The centuries old conflict has led to endless wars and broken planets.
[00:00:15] My only way out was to join Guadalajara's army, the Reapers,
[00:00:19] a resource exploration and procurement engineer regiment,
[00:00:23] also known as the Salvage Marines.
[00:00:27] You know the debt my father left me.
[00:00:30] I want our son to know a better world than this.
[00:00:35] And I want our son to know his father.
[00:00:40] Do you even realize what's out there, Sam?
[00:00:43] Hail speed.
[00:00:46] Merks.
[00:00:51] Pirates.
[00:00:54] Monsters.
[00:00:56] Your loyalties repossed too far.
[00:01:03] Most people never come back.
[00:01:06] Do you think anything could survive that?
[00:01:09] I want to take it all back.
[00:01:11] The reasons, the sacrifice, the blood.
[00:01:14] Do we just commit a war crime?

[00:02:17] Jacked Up...
[00:02:20] We're continuing all the fighting genres
[00:02:24] and our federation starship troopers.
[00:02:28] We've discussed that stuff.
[00:02:31] What's new?
[00:02:33] We're going to be doing a series of episodes
[00:02:37] available now on Popcorn Flicks and Crackle.
[00:02:41] It's yet another independent international low budget
[00:02:45] production that's trying to look bigger than it actually is
[00:02:49] and I got to plot it.
[00:02:52] It's just eight episodes.
[00:02:55] We're seeing a lot of people like or hate this
[00:02:59] with lots of interesting names attached to this.
[00:03:03] Not just as a 90s material.
[00:03:07] With Casper Vendian and Johnny Rico,
[00:03:11] it's clear that this is the main reason you're watching this.
[00:03:15] It's a throwback to those kinds of
[00:03:18] fascist societies
[00:03:21] just showing various
[00:03:24] people are being recruited into
[00:03:27] all these futuristic soldiers
[00:03:30] and fighting mostly on-scene alien race.
[00:03:33] propaganda recruiter is none other than Armand Nishante who plays a real life person who's
[00:03:39] often only seen as an interactive hologram.
[00:03:44] But it starts off on the basics, it could have been some better explanation but long
[00:03:48] story short people who are in prison for whatever wrongdoing can make up said prison
[00:03:54] time by serving in the field and somehow Casper Vandy and his character is able to
[00:04:00] get past said restriction and join this team which is basically a bunch of outer
[00:04:07] space mercs called the Reapers.
[00:04:10] And it just makes better sense because long story short when you were given
[00:04:16] jail time in this so-called total recall type feature basically you just
[00:04:22] you collect this debt but it's like a thousand years since there's some shit to
[00:04:26] where it would basically carry over into the on-born offspring and so that's the
[00:04:30] cool dilemma is like hey I got this wife, Sarah, played by Lenora Washington.
[00:04:37] It's cool to see a biracial couple on a mainstream show like this too.
[00:04:42] And she is an actress who's been in all kinds of things and just various TV guest spots and
[00:04:49] even other stuff that I was like wow okay I have seen you I just didn't know you were in that thing
[00:04:57] versus that but yeah some casual roles and including Barbershop too killing them softly and
[00:05:07] various roles on ER and CIS saga so that's interesting but yeah all these actors did
[00:05:14] pretty good here except for Gianni Capaldi he's this European actor who's been basically
[00:05:26] oh he's Scottish that's what it is but yeah somebody about his accent just drives me
[00:05:30] absolute bad shit crazy it's just not very good and of course it doesn't help that he's in a
[00:05:37] lot of these B movies so unfortunately he seems like a nice guy but I just haven't cared for many
[00:05:46] of his roles that include The Commando with Mickey Rourke, Hell on the Border with Ron Pullman
[00:05:53] and A Day to Die which is a crappy movie with Kevin Dillon, Bruce Willis and Frank Grillo
[00:05:59] as well as a few other Casper Vandy in movies and as one of the crooked cops in River Runs
[00:06:06] read with Ty Diggs and Luke Hemsworth yeah there's just someone about him he's just not very good and
[00:06:14] all I get are you just feel like he's just too much in love with himself and he's not
[00:06:18] as opposed to being invested in giving the best possible performance my main intro to him was
[00:06:24] those Dolph Lundgren movies that were where Dolph was trying some gangster type material but
[00:06:32] I didn't think those were good for the most part and I thought okay maybe it's just you know
[00:06:38] it's a shit show because it's got all these other talented guys who also aren't giving their best but
[00:06:43] this guy he's had so many different productions too he's not one who offends you or makes you
[00:06:50] say I'm not going to continue watching the rest of the movie but it's still just kind of like
[00:06:55] you're very much in love with yourself and you need to stop chewing the scenery and actually
[00:07:01] act because that's the other thing there is a way to actually chew the scenery and have fun
[00:07:06] and it wasn't working in that either here he is being this other guy who's kind of just
[00:07:11] wants to just go in fight these aliens without a military plan and I don't feel any of the
[00:07:19] character development that he's trying to echo that's in the script I just feel him
[00:07:22] just saying I'm gonna play to the camera and it's fucking annoying as hell and not in a good
[00:07:26] way not in an intended way either there's a difference you know from someone being a detective or a
[00:07:33] gangster trying to take on all their opposition and here you know I just didn't feel any of his
[00:07:39] so-called opposition I just felt like he was just being him but playing to the camera and no
[00:07:47] one giving him notes or maybe they didn't think it was awful but then again this is a B movie
[00:07:52] show so I hardly think it's that I think it's just they don't have a problem with them but
[00:07:58] most viewers like us are gonna probably find him annoying and not all that great an actor but
[00:08:05] it is a miniscule issue with this otherwise decent production all together I mean I like
[00:08:13] the alien designs I like how they saved the battle for the very final episode
[00:08:18] it takes a while to get going but overall it was a decent it can be I've mainly recommended as a
[00:08:25] Sunday night 2am type movie let alone a simple you know Sunday night watch it's very easy
[00:08:35] and laid-back entertainment it's not deep and it doesn't have to be you know and not everything
[00:08:42] has to be the expanse and I love that show that the expanse was incredible at laying out all this
[00:08:49] material much like you know other shows that had done it before and just as good like Stargate and
[00:08:55] Babylon 5 and the show is never going to be on anyone's top 10 list and if it is it's going
[00:09:01] to be with anyone who's just like a complete as for anything kind of like aliens predator
[00:09:06] and you know matrix type epic this is a very laid-back popcorn entertainment and doesn't pretend to be
[00:09:15] anything else it really does want to just make a straightforward you know material and a big scene
[00:09:23] stiller is Peter Shin Kota who you might know from Daredevil and Falling Skies among other
[00:09:29] movies and shows he's a Japanese Canadian actor and he's in all kinds of productions and
[00:09:40] he does a pretty good job here at just outlining his character how much like
[00:09:49] Casper Bendian's character he is trying to again you know escape this imprisoned military
[00:09:57] sentence and not dying combat and for the first three episodes they not only build the world but also
[00:10:05] mainly flesh out just the whole just hey you know like there here's how we live our day-to-day
[00:10:12] life in the barracks and outline it all he's also really good that the whole thing is pretty good
[00:10:17] at just illustrating just what everyone's feeling and where they're going at this time and
[00:10:27] you know now there are some homages especially to aliens and starship troopers they make fun of the
[00:10:35] they do a homodge so to speak in the co-ed of a shower segment and they do it in a way where
[00:10:43] it's not too over the top it's not pornographic it's just kind of funny it's like ha ha I see what
[00:10:49] you did there it's kind of more like an expendables kind of way that they do it and the director of
[00:10:56] this I think helm the whole show if I'm not mistaken Sean Paul Pacino Picciannino
[00:11:03] has mainly done just Christmas specials and other stuff and
[00:11:10] this this was pretty competent and never showed I'm cool you have kudos to anyone who can escape
[00:11:19] directing you know reality TV and documentary programs and hallmark stuff and do something
[00:11:24] bigger Philippi Martinez he would work with Armina Chante and a few other B movies was one of the
[00:11:31] big executive producers on this and according to the main website and you know they show it
[00:11:38] highly in the credits but like it can't be ignored is a giant international production I knew it was
[00:11:44] filmed in parts of Canada and the UK given the amount of actors but it also credits and as being
[00:11:51] Australian Germany US Japan and China production so clearly whoever it was who arranged this got
[00:11:57] all seven you know investors and crew casting crew from again all seven countries and cited hey
[00:12:05] we're gonna go into detail on this and it was called the company is 365 Flicks International
[00:12:13] but I really applaud him for getting this detailed result it seems like they got an
[00:12:20] outline for a second and third season and they've done all kinds of made for TV directive video
[00:12:29] independent festival productions and I still I gotta applaud that for looking as big as it is
[00:12:36] you can tell when it's very low budget that it's it's not quite there yet but it's also
[00:12:44] so far from just like so cheap like would not fly you know today it is not student film level it's
[00:12:52] very good at also just highlighting like getting us to hate this corporations that basically
[00:13:01] rule the world and its military against this alien threat and the aliens themselves I meant
[00:13:07] sorry I meant to say this earlier are kind of a mixture like if you don't kill them right away
[00:13:12] they reanimate into kind of zombie type creatures they're often armored with skills
[00:13:18] and kudos to the filmmakers that's a good way of showing how hey you know what we can't show you
[00:13:24] can actually make them a little freakier and for lack of a better word and the training segments
[00:13:30] are good at just kind of they do a good job of keeping them straightforward as well as having
[00:13:36] decent visuals and showcasing what everyone what's on everyone's mind and how maybe this fight might
[00:13:44] actually come of course it does finally arrive and they do have cool machine guns but all together I mean
[00:13:52] just the decent anyone who sees the poster this can't possibly mistake what they're
[00:13:56] getting into but it's hardly dumb it's just again it's a lower budget but it's
[00:14:03] it knows what it wants to be and it doesn't have any cheesy music or anything else that
[00:14:09] messes with the tone it's it is what it is it is a straightforward
[00:14:18] be picture in six acts so it's pretty good at that kudos to everybody for
[00:14:27] getting it together and being organized and knowing what they wanted to put up
[00:14:34] so it is highly recommended and anybody who's just you know looking for something
[00:14:42] then some of the other oversaturated big budget shit this is the one to look out for
